drunk prompts 9 for syd and ethan
Title: Taken Care Of Book: Open Heart (takes place during Book 2) Pairing(s): Ethan Ramsey x m!MC (Sydney Valentine) Other Characters: Elijah Greene, Jackie Varma Words: 1,436 Category: Fluff Rating: Teen+ AO3 link here Summary: When Ethan finds Sydney completely wasted at Donahue's, Ethan takes him home and takes care of him. A/N: Thanks for the request anon! A/N 2/EDIT: for @choicesjuly2023challenge and @moodmusicmonday "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" by Whitney Houston (how did I forget to submit my own fic to the event that I am hosting???)
Having been one of the first people in his group to arrive at the bar, it was no surprise that Sydney was currently the drunkest, especially because, let’s be honest, his tolerance was not nearly as high as some of his friends, namely Jackie. And Bryce. And Aurora.
“Sydney! What song should I play next?” Elijah shouted from where he sat next to the jukebox. Most everyone else was on the dance floor and Sydney was the closest to the jukebox.
“Hmm, how about… something 80s! Something we can dance to!” Not that Sydney really needed good dancing music when he was this drunk.
“Ooh, I have the perfect song!” Elijah quickly chose the new tune and as soon as it started playing, Sydney’s eyes lit up. It was exactly what he’d had in mind.
Sydney looked around the dance floor for his friends, signaling the first one he saw, Jackie, to come join him. She quickly made her way to him on the dance floor and he spun her around in time with the music. Well, sort of in time with the music.
“Okay, we can dance, but I’m a little too drunk for you to be spinning me around like that.” Jackie laughed.
Sydney laughed along and said, “Fine, but that means you have to sing with me! Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody! I wanna feel the heat–” His singing was more off-beat than his dancing, but Jackie joined in anyway, her singing not quite as bad, but still missing the mark completely. Halfway through the song, Sydney decided to do a spin himself, since Jackie wouldn’t let him spin her, and immediately felt nauseated. “I’m gonna go sit down because I think I might be too drunk to dance,” Sydney shouted to Jackie, his words slurred.
“Boo, you lightweight!” Jackie yelled after him as he exited the dance floor.
Sydney sat at the nearest seat at the bar, watching Jackie and Elijah on the dance floor. He started absentmindedly spinning his chair back and forth, until he realized that that too was nauseating. Who puts spinny chairs in a bar anyway? Sydney thought. He heart the thud of a glass being put on the bar, but he hadn’t ordered anything so he knew it was for someone else. He watched on as Jackie tripped, but didn’t fall because she wasn’t as drunk as anyone else despite having the same amount to drink, if not more. Someone cleared their throat right next to Sydney, attracting his attention. “Ethan!” Sydney smiled.
“I brought you a water. Looks like you could use it.” Ethan gestured to the drink on the bar behind Sydney. Guess that thud of a glass was for him.
“Aw, thank you! But I don’t need it, I’m good.” Sydney started humming along to the next song on the jukebox. He couldn’t remember the name of it but it was definitely Lady Gaga.
“Sydney.” Sydney looked up at Ethan, who was now holding the glass out to him. “Drink the water.”
Sydney glared at him, which Ethan just found adorable rather than actually threatening, and forcefully took the glass from him. He took a drink and, yeah, okay, maybe it made him feel a little better. He quickly stood up from the barstool, losing his balance. Just as quickly, Ethan reached out to stabilize him. Sydney laughed and said, “I was going to ask you to dance, but I guess this was all I needed to do to get me in your arms.”
Ethan blushed and said, “Sydney, not here, okay?”
“Not here what? Not here you can dance with me? It’d be a totally professional and platonic dance and I wouldn’t grind on you at all or anything.” Sydney laughed, knowing he was lying.
“Sydney, seriously, I know you’re drunk, but come on.” Despite his words, Ethan had yet to let go of his grip on Sydney.
“Pleeeeeease, Ethan? I’ll make sure Elijah puts on the least sexiest least romantic song he can think of. Like, I wouldn’t be able to be sexy to it if I tried – and I will try.”
“At least quiet down, Syd. You are being way too loud right now,” Ethan said sternly, looking into Sydney’s eyes.
“You think I’m loud right now? Oh, the shit you’re in for if you take me to bed with you.”
“What the fu— okay, we’re getting you straight home.” Ethan kept his grip on Sydney’s arm, just tight enough to be able to drag him out of the bar.
Sydney followed along laughing. “I think you mean we’re getting me gay home. I don’t go straight anywhere!”
“That’s not—” Ethan sighed. “Sure, honey, the point is we’re getting you home.” Ethan led Sydney to his car and helped him into the passenger’s seat.
After a little bit of driving in silence Sydney turned to Ethan and asked, “Are you mad at me?”
“What? No! I’m not mad at you.”
Sydney brought his knees up to his chest and said, “Oh. You just seemed kinda mad. Are you sure you’re not mad at me?”
“Yes, baby, I’m sure. I was… a little frustrated you weren’t listening to me, but only because I had your best interests in mind.”
Sydney furrowed his brow and responded, “How would you know what my best interests are? Wouldn’t I know that better than anyone else?”
Ethan sighed and said, “Not when you’re drunk.”
“Oh. I guess that makes sense. I’m not that drunk though. Only a little. So I think I’d still know.” Ethan parked the car outside Sydney’s apartment. “Why did we stop?”
“Because we’re at your apartment. Wait there, I’ll help you.” Ethan turned off the car and quickly got out, walking around to the passenger’s side. Thankfully, Sydney was still processing what Ethan had said by the time he’d made it there and thus hadn’t tried to get out of the car on his own. Ethan opened the door and took Sydney’s arm, leading him up the stairs and into the apartment.
Sydney yawned as they entered the door and said, “I’m tired. Why am I so tired? I feel like I just had so much energy and now I’m so tired. That doesn’t make sense.”
“Alcohol does that. Come on.” Ethan led Sydney back to his room. Ethan sat Sydney on the bed and pulled some pajamas out of his closet for him.
Sydney flopped, face-first, on the bed. “I don’t want to change, I just want to go to sleep.”
“Syd, you will be much happier in the morning if you wake up in some comfy pajamas, I promise,” Ethan said gently.
“I’ll be much happier in the morning if I wake up with you,” Sydney responded, his voice muffled, but Ethan still understood every word clearly.
“Syd…” Ethan kneeled next to the bed, rubbing Sydney’s back.
Sydney turned his head so he was facing Ethan. “Please?”
“What if your roommates see me?” Ethan asks nervously.
“It wouldn’t be the first time,” Sydney responded matter-of-factly.
“Yes, but that was only two of them.”
“I hate to break it to you babe, but if two of them know, they all know. Especially when one of the two was Elijah.”
Ethan smiled slightly. Although he was a handful, drunk Sydney was rather endearing. “I suppose I should’ve thought of that, huh?”
“Yeeeaaah, you are a super-mega-smart doctor and all that.”
Ethan laughed and stood up. “I’ll stay, but that means you have to put on your pajamas, okay?”
Sydney looked up at Ethan and said, “Can you help me? I might be too drunk to do it right.”
Ethan helped Sydney off the bed saying, “I know you think you’re lying, but that might actually be true.” Ethan lifted Sydney’s shirt above his head before he started unbuttoning his pants.
“You know, last time you were taking off my pants, we were having sex. But I think I’m too tired for sex tonight. Is that okay?”
“That is absolutely fine, my love.” As if that had even been on Ethan’s mind.
“Okay, good.”
Ethan finished helping Sydney before sitting him back down on the bed and putting on some of Sydney’s pajamas himself. He joined Sydney on the bed, pulling back the covers for both of them. They cuddled together, Sydney laying his head against Ethan’s chest and wrapping his arms around his torso.
“Thank you for taking care of me,” Sydney mumbled, already half asleep.
“I don’t need a thank you for that. But you’re welcome.” Ethan pressed a kiss to Sydney’s forehead before drifting off to sleep as well.

Our Little Surprise
Created by @/artbyainna (IG)
It's Ainna's fandom-versary on Instagram, and I really feel like I should share the pieces she's done for me that I'm still sitting on. I intended to share this when I posted Tobias & Casey's final wedding fic (coming very soon!) But, since I want to give AInna all the love and accolades she deserves, I'm sharing this today with a scene from their wedding. I hope you enjoy it!
Book: Open Heart (post-series) Pairing: Tobias Carrick x F!MC (Casey MacTavish Carrick) Rating: Teen Words: 259 Summary: During a toast at their wedding, Tobias & Casey share a little secret they've been keeping. A/N: This scene may be in the final fic, but it may not, so I"m presenting it as a ficlet here.
“… now you’ve listened to me babble long enough, but there is one more thing, my wife… I’m never going to get tired of saying, my wife….”
“Oh, for God’s sake!” Jackie chided. “Stop!!”
Tobias smirked in their bridesmaid’s direction before carrying on.
“As I was saying before, we were rudely interrupted… before Casey and I let you get back to dancing and maybe starting a love story of your own… our kick-ass, over-the-top, none better maid-of-honor has helped us set up this little surprise. Each of you has an envelope taped to the bottom of your chair.”
Casey grabbed their envelope from the top of the table and took the mike from Tobias. “Take them out, but please let’s open them together on the count of three….”
“Is this like Oprah?” Elijah hollered, “are we getting a car?”
“Settle down there, Greene,” Tobias snickered. “This gift is far better than a car, but you’re not all going home with one.”
“Nope,” Casey chuckled, “but we might be willing to share….”
“Well, with some of you,” Tobias corrected. “On the count of three… one… two… three….”
A joyful chaos took over the room, and the beaming couple was in the center of it all, gazing at each other as Casey lovingly held their most recent sonogram photo in her hand. Gasps, cheers, applause, and even a few sniffles could be heard, but as guests rushed to approach them, they couldn’t take their eyes off each other, lost in the glow of the little precious little world they had created.

Your Love
Word Count: 2879
Fandom: Open Heart (Visual Novels)
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Characters/Pairings: Bryce Lahela x M!MC (Jensen Valentine), Sienna Trinh, Jackie Varma, Elijah Greene, & Aurora Emery
Summary: What a typical night of adventuring looks for Jensen and Bryce, featuring the roomies and their lovely input
A/N: so ngl i never really intended on posting this fic. (it wasnt even a fic lbr.) its one of the many that i keep in a big doc filled with plenty of other half-finished ideas, but this one got to the point where i thought i might as well post it since its finished anyway. its a lot longer than i thought, too, but i hope you enjoy it! theres not much plot but if you wanted a little look into jensen and bryce from bryces pov this is it!!
~~~
Bryce opened the apartment door then quickly closed it behind himself, tossing off his shoes and hanging his jacket up among the tens of others on the many hooks in the foyer.
“Hey Bryce!” Sienna greeted from somewhere in the living room. He returned the formality, slipping his keys into the pocket of his joggers with his phone in the other.
“Do you want these?” Jackie asked before he could get one step into the kitchen, a mostly-empty tray of nachos in her hand. “I feel bad throwing them away.”
“Sure,” he answered with a smile, Jackie setting them down on the counter next to the bowl of salsa. “Where’s Jensen?” he asked, covering his half-full mouth with the back of his hand.
“Shower,” Aurora answered from where she was putting away a few clean dishes. He immediately perked up, Jackie giving him a disgusted sort of look from the fridge.
“He got in like ten minutes ago, you’re too late anyway.”
Bryce let out a sigh. “Damn, why you gotta get my hopes up like that?”
Jackie looked so utterly done with him that he couldn’t help but laugh, Aurora shaking her head but smiling anyway.
This little routine was one of his favorites. By now, the roomies had more than accepted how often he would be staying over, no matter how hard he tried not to bother them. They had started integrating him in most of their plans, too. In all honesty, he and Jensen didn’t stay together anywhere near as often as most couples, Jensen staying at his place and vice versa once a week each, but with the roomies acclimating to the routine, he felt welcome to stay more.
“Jackie, I swear to god, if you leave hair on my shelf one more time I’m going to replace your shampoo with Nair,” Jensen said, his easygoing tone directly contrasting the threat as he entered from the hall. Bryce was more than happy to give him an up-and-down glance, wet curls pushed back from his face, t-shirt hugging in all the right places, and boxers perfectly accentuating his thighs (that Bryce was sure he was focusing on more in the gym).
Jackie gave him a guilty smile. “It was an accident?”
Entirely unamused, Jensen shook his head before walking over to him. He pressed a light kiss to his shoulder from where he was leaning over the counter, scooting around him to rummage through the fridge. He stopped on a case of edible cookie dough, taking it out and popping the top off before unceremoniously shoving a piece in his mouth. Aurora reached around him to grab some, Jensen instinctually pulling it away.
“Nuh-uh, get your own,” he said, muffled around the cookie dough in his mouth. He easily held it over her head, practically lunging away as she tried to jump and grab it.
“That’s not even fair! You can’t use my height against me!”
Jensen scoffed, laughing out a, “More like ‘lack of.’”
They fought over it for a minute before Aurora jabbed him in the side, grabbing the whole container as he quickly moved to cover the spot.
“Ow!” he said pointedly at her, only getting a smirk in response.
“That was fair game,” Jackie said from next to Bryce, taking a sip of her water with a casual shrug. Bryce nodded in agreement. Aurora wasn’t even that short, but Jensen being over six foot put him far above the other roomies.
Jensen easily accepted the defeat with a sigh, grabbing a second case of it from the fridge and breaking the seal. He stopped across from Bryce and leaned over the counter in a similar fashion, setting the cookie dough on the counter between them with a look.
“Wow, I get some after that little display?” he teased quietly, leaning in a little closer. “You must like me an awful lot.”
Jensen let out a wry hum, practiced expression perfectly hiding the joke in his words. “Oh, no, definitely not.” He continued in a conspiratorial whisper, looking across the kitchen without a glance in Bryce’s direction, “This one actually has egg; I’m just plotting to give you salmonella, then, when you’re too sick to function, I’ll steal all your money and belongings.”
He finally tilted his head with a look, flat expression going strong. Bryce tried to keep up the act, clenching his teeth in a poor attempt at subduing his smile.
“How very evil of you,” he whispered back as the corners of his lips already started upturning.
“I know, right?” Jensen replied with a casual tone that matched like they had been gossiping about the most normal of things.
Bryce smiled at him even as he glanced the other way, a bout of shouting between Sienna and Elijah over whatever video game they had been playing. He effortlessly admired the gentle grin on Jensen’s lips, freckles and other blemishes adorning his skin and sharp profile. Bryce didn’t know what it was, but tonight he could see more of the green in Jensen’s eyes than normal, usually sitting at a comfortable brown color but the kitchen light casting a clean white glow over them.
Jackie let out a feignedly-disgusted scoff as she leaned over and grabbed a piece of cookie dough. “Bryce, stop looking so in love, you’re ruining my dessert.”
Jensen quickly looked back at that, letting out a short laugh at his expense. Bryce would make a fool of himself a hundred times over if that's what it took to hear it—that melodic little chuckle that probably could’ve had him weak in the knees with the right context.
“Mmh, you know what would go great with this?” Jackie asked, entirely interrupting his train of thought.
“Ice cream?” Aurora offered from somewhere behind him in the living room.
“Yes! Exactly.” Jackie took a moment to think about it before her gaze locked on Jensen. “Jensennnnn,” she said, trying to hide a grin, “It’s women’s history month; you should be nice and go get us ice cream.”
He replied with something between a whine and a sigh. “Why can’t you make Bryce do it? He’s dressed!”
“Uh, I’m in pajamas?” he countered.
“And?” Jensen asked, “I’m not even wearing pants.”
The two of them gave Jackie a look, the three of their gazes exchanging before they turned toward the living room, the three of them yelling, “Elijah!”
“No!” he answered immediately, Jackie rolling her eyes before looking back at the two of them with a pleading expression.
Jensen shook his head with an eye roll before pushing himself up from the counter. “Yeah, I’m going.”
Bryce knew he would be going with so they could take his car, an unspoken sort of rule when you don’t want your boyfriend catching a cold in thirty degree weather. He slipped his shoes on and grabbed their coats while Jensen changed into something at least publicly appropriate.
Jensen threw on a casual pair of vans when he made it to the doorway, blue plaid pajama pant bottoms and a hoodie now covering the rest of him. Bryce tried to hand him his coat but he gave him a look.
“It’s like thirty-six.”
Bryce sighed. “Yes, Jensen, most people consider that cold.”
“I’m just going from here to the car, I’ll be perfectly fine.”
Before Bryce could protest, Jensen opened the door and slipped out, leaving Bryce to hang the coat up and follow him with a shake of his head.
They had a quick discussion of where would be the closest, deciding on one of the small, corner grocery stores not too far. Jensen took the keys from him when they got to the parking lot. Bryce was fine to drive in the snow, but, to be fair, Jensen was better at it. And, he was more than happy to be using the least amount of brain power possible with the late hour and after a 14-hour shift.
Jensen probably spent more time finding music to listen to than it would’ve taken to get there, so he very patiently waited in the passenger seat, only letting out the occasional loud sigh until he got the hint. He finally landed on something he liked, or at least tolerated, and quickly pulled out of the parking lot. It only took him until after the first turn to interlace his free hand with Bryce’s, pulling it across the center console and into his lap. He mindlessly drew circles across his thumb and down to his palm on the way there.
Jensen parked on the street just outside the door before the two of them got out, meeting up at the front of the car to walk in together. Or at least that’s what Bryce planned, Jensen giving him a shoulder-check on the way and clearly trying to push him into the snow bank along the curb.
“You’re not funny,” Bryce said with an unamused glance while Jensen gave him a bright smile.
“I am, actually,” he said as they started toward the door.
Bryce gave him an exaggeratedly incredulous hum. “Really? I think I would’ve noticed by now.” Jensen just rolled his eyes with a smile, heading straight for the frozen aisle without bothering to grab a basket. He does it every time, and, until the unlikely day he remembers to, Bryce will be right behind him with one.
By the time he met up with him again, Jensen was already elbow deep in the one of the freezers, collecting an armful of pints in his free hand. As usual, he selected one at least two behind from the first, one of his many workarounds to avoid the chance of the germs from someone who had picked it up and put it back. It was always interesting to him—how Jensen chose one of the few professions where he’s guaranteed to be in contact with at least one sick person a day, but it was something about control. He had very vaguely explained here and there, and knowing how to cure those diseases was exactly the assurance he needed.
“Can you get me a mint one, please?”
“No,” Jensen answered easily, and Bryce noticed that he already had it in his arm. Jensen precariously attempted to set another on the pile in his arm, noticing the look Bryce was giving him before relenting and dumping them into the basket. He quickly organized them to evenly disperse the weight before taking off down another aisle.
“What are you getting now?” Bryce asked with a grin on his face. The best he could do was follow Jensen and hope he didn’t get them into anything they weren’t supposed to.
“We’re browsing,” he offered, leaning towards him for a moment before continuing forward to the snacks, a little more bounce in his step than normal. There was never a time where Jensen had a song stuck in his head and Bryce couldn’t tell; after so long, he could pick up on the timed paces he’d take, occasionally mouthing a lyric here and there. He was never obvious enough that other people could tell, but it was easy to see all the little cues when Bryce already knew them.
Jensen seemed more than fine to lead them through the store, giving Bryce plenty of time to take a few pictures of him practically capering through the aisles. He happily posed for a few of them, too.
He threw a few more things in by the time they made it to the check-out, Bryce helpfully setting everything out to be scanned while Jensen easily conversed with the cashier. It only took them a moment to finish up before heading back out again.
Even though it was pitch black, Boston was never quite dark. The city lights reflected off the cloudy night, leaving the scene plenty bright enough for them to see as they tossed the few bags in the back.
“Bryce,” Jensen asked over the car, getting him to look up before asking, “Insomnia Cookies?”
Bryce let out an excited little gasp. “Yes.”
Jensen smiled before they got in the car. He finally bothered to just connect his phone and pick one of his many playlists, clearly looking for something specific before they left. Bryce recognized the song from the many times Jensen had played it, “still feel.” by half•alive loudly thumping through the speakers.
Bryce couldn’t quite remember the first time Jensen was comfortable enough to sing around him but God he was glad it happened. He did remember the first time Jensen mentioned he was in a band, though, passing it off like nothing and simultaneously failing to mention that he could’ve scored a considerably recognizable record deal from it. If Bryce would’ve known Jensen could sing like he was right now, he wouldn’t have even questioned in the beginning.
The amount of money Bryce would pay to see Jensen on stage was a whole other deal he probably shouldn’t get into or imagine. Instead, he was happy to watch with adoration in his stare as Jensen gave him a little concert right then and there.
They made a quick stop inside the nearest Insomnia Cookies, each getting an impressive array before starting back towards Jensen’s apartment.
Jensen parked when they made it back to the apartment, but, instead of taking the key out of the ignition, he turned down the radio.
“You know,” he started, unwrapping one of the cookies in his hand, “if we take these inside, they’re going to ask to share.”
A grin slowly grew across Bryce’s face. “...So you’re saying you want to sit here and eat them?”
Jensen gave him an exaggeratedly innocent smile before biting into the cookie in his hand. Bryce let out a laugh and a shake of his head, easily relenting and grabbing one of the other cookies on his lap. Both of them were perfectly content not saying anything, Jensen happily keeping himself occupied between eating and a few little dances here and there.
Jensen pulled out his phone for a few stupidly-posed selfies, only taking a couple before he quickly dropped his phone and leaned over to Bryce. Without elaboration, he swiped his tongue over his thumb, seamlessly reaching up and focusedly wiping off a bit of chocolate on Bryce’s lip.
Bryce honestly hadn't noticed that they hadn’t kissed all night until that moment, the thought making its way to the forefront of his mind as Jensen stalled before giving him an apologetic look. He quickly moved his thumb away as if Bryce minded. He knew it was another germs thing, but he almost laughed at it—because he definitely hasn’t had Jensen’s lips all over him before.
Before he got too far, Bryce smiled. He grabbed Jensen’s wrist, pausing for barely a second then pulling Jensen’s lips into his across the center console. Jensen easily melted into him, hands coming up to the sides of his face to guide him this way and that, kisses quickly getting distracted and trailing down to his neck.
Jensen pulled away for a breath with a look Bryce had seen plenty of times before. He absolutely noticed the quick glance Jensen sent towards the back seat, a sigh falling from his lips with a half-eye-roll.
“Ice creams gonna melt,” he offered, words a little less eloquent and enunciated than normal (which Bryce was more than happy to take credit for).
“Mhm, I guess we’ll have to take it inside,” Bryce said, already smirking. “Think you keep your hands off me for that long?”
Instead of the unamused expression he expected, Jensen gave him an up-and-down glance followed by a tilt of his head and a shrug. Bryce laughed airily, shaking his head and definitely not feeling a wave of heat rise to his cheeks. The directness, if you could call it that, was out of left field for Jensen, totally catching him off guard.
Jensen turned the car off and quickly got out, leaving Bryce to stumble for a minute before following suit. He noticed, of course, having a perfectly great time watching him over the roof of the car as he quickly piled on the bags to his arm and let Jensen lock it before they walked inside.
“You’re enjoying this too much.” Bryce finally broke the silence on the elevator.
“Are you kidding? You never fucking get flustered!” he said with a satisfied smile. “I’m counting this as a win.”
“Mhm, I’m sure you are.” They gave each other a smile, Bryce shaking his head.
“Don’t act like you’re annoyed with me,” Jensen countered casually, grinning as he continued. “You love me and you know it.”
Bryce sighed. “Yeah, I suppose.”
“You suppose?” Bryce could see the mock-offense on his face and couldn’t help but let out a short laugh. “Would you like a reminder of why it’s more than ‘suppose?’”
Bryce laughed again, habitually stepping closer. He tried again to reply with “I suppose,” but Jensen cut him off halfway through, pulling him in for a short, sweet kiss as the elevator dinged open.
He was smiling when they pulled apart, Jensen pressing one more peck to his lips before linking their hands and walking them down the hall and back into the apartment for the rest of the night.
AN: Inspired by several pictagram edits; I’ve been inspired to create my own pictagram series and I thought, it would be a great way to get to know the contestants before the next part of Baking Love comes out. So I made profiles for all the characters. Well most for now, some I’m releasing now, others I’m releasing later. This one has our two main characters, hosts and judges! So I hope you enjoy! 🥰 Let me know if you would like to be tagged for the series both fic and/or pictagram!
Here are the people I’m citing for their amazing edits:
@genevievemd Your 101 smiles kicked it off for me and thanks to you I was brave enough to attempt this 😅
you’re smiling, right?
Book: Open Heart
Warning: a pinch of suggestive material Rating: General Pairing: Ethan x F!MC Word Count: 3200+ Author’s note: A sequel to “i’m so scared”, angst, angst and more angst. I love this fic so much. Check out my masterlist for more!
He should have done more.
She looked so small and frail in the hospital bed, a stark contrast from her usual healthy and fit form. With her hands resting on her stomach, rising and falling in sync with her low breathing, it reminded Ethan too much of death. He impulsively reached out, stopped himself, then reached out again to shift her hands so it laid at her sides.
His hands were quivering, his breath was more shaky and heavier than even hers. He wasn’t supposed to be there, he wasn’t on call and visiting hours were long over, but he was Doctor Ethan freaking Ramsey, world-class attending, which was exactly what he told the nurse who came in a while ago. He wasn’t forceful, he hadn’t demanded (something that rarely occurred), but he figured the nurse had let him stay not because of his position, but because she heard his raw and thready voice, or maybe it was his red and slightly swollen eyes that gave it away, maybe because he looked like he was prepared to leap out the window.
To be truthful, he was. But he held on because he had hope that the light at the end of the tunnel was nearing. She was improving, only by an incredibly small margin, but improving nonetheless. That’s what he told himself: she was getting better, she’ll be fine.
Lying was bad, but sometimes lying to himself was the only option he had left.
He should have done less.
It was all his fault. It was his idea to bring up that stupid clinical trial, it was his actions that pushed her away, it was his fault that he wouldn’t even be able to say goodbye now. The knowledge that if he hadn’t done anything, he would still be able to hear her voice one more time, to see her smile, to hear her laugh, it ate away at him.
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” She said to him when he first told her about it. He should have listened to her, she was always right, but he wanted her to get better so damn badly that he made it worse.
“It’ll work, I know it will,” He told her when she started feeling so weak from the drugs that she could barely sit up in bed without her chest heaving. If only he hadn’t gotten involved, she wouldn’t have to go through so much pain, he wouldn’t have to go through the pain of seeing her like that either.
He stood in the corner of the well-decorated hospital ward that felt so empty without her joyous personality to fill it. It was strange, really. He had been in more hospital wards than he could count, he broke the news to sobbing patients and family members without feeling much of his own emotions, but even entering the vicinity of her room could make him break down in a fit of sobs.
Letting himself slide down onto the cool floor, he curled his fists tighter in his green leather jacket, wrapping it around his shoulders as best as he could. It smelled of a number of things, the most significant being her. It smelled of cheap alcohol, of cigarettes, and sweat, it smelled of those trashy clubs he never liked to go to, but loved it whenever he went with her.
“Doctor Ramsey?” The voice and a knock on the door made him peel his eyes away from where she laid on the bed in the middle of the room.
It was the nurse from earlier. Taylor, he vaguely remembers her name from before. She had a piping cup of hot coffee in one hand, a bun in the other, both undoubtedly subpar and from the cafeteria.
“Thanks,” is all he mumbled when he received the items from her, lazily tossing the bun onto the bedside table as she slipped out and back into the hallway.
The coffee wasn’t whiskey, which was what he told himself he really needed at that moment, but at the very least it was enough to keep him awake a while longer, enough for him to continue watching over her. Because he would, he’d stay up all day and all night until she woke up and he gets the chance to say he’s sorry, even though Ethan Ramsey never apologises; but if she did, if she just opened her eyes, he’d do anything she wanted him to.
And if she didn’t. Well, he just hoped he wouldn’t have to find out anytime soon.
He shouldn’t have gotten his hopes up.
There was a point where rage met serenity, where the anger and the storm that roared would settle, the point before all hell broke loose. It was the eye of the hurricane, where the pain and the fury that built up inside of him just stalled, paused, and there was a moment of peace, the calm before the storm.
That was where Ethan found himself now. He was enraged, but too tired and helpless to do anything about it, so he did nothing. The world grew quiet and his skin went numb. The rain no longer stung against his bare flesh, the pain that had erupted in his chest faded to a sort of hollow feeling between his ribs. The shouts that came from his throat grew silent, and the fog that clouded his eyes cleared. Complete clarity, complete silence.
He remembered the way the adrenaline pumped through his blood as he stood in front of the classroom. The time he found her friendly smile amid the sea of judgement.
He smiled at the memory of running away in the evenings in search of exciting adventures in their teenage years, how carefree and unknowingly in love they were with each other. He could remember the sound of her voice, every small agreement and hum as he rambled on and they drove late into the night, nowhere in particular they had to be. He could remember the sound of tires on a lonely stretch of highway, and the crackling of the radio in between their favourite songs. He could remember the sound of her almost obnoxiously enthusiastic singing slowly turning to a quiet mumbling as they drove further and further away from everyone else, just the two of them.
He could remember the sound of her breath in between kisses, the mattress shifting under them as they melted into one another. That day was so clear in his head, the day after he told her, the day after she told him. The drastically different pieces of information they gave each other was uneasy at first, but they soon agreed that they had waited too long to not be with each other. He remembered the steady beating of her heartbeat as he held her close.
He could remember the blissful sound of her laugh; her real, hysterical, full-of-wheezing laugh, the one that erupted from her chest whenever they shared something as personal as an inside joke or something as simple and stupid as finding each other’s gaze in the middle of a terrible school presentation. He could remember every math formula or history fact she repeated to herself while studying for finals, in hopes of achieving her dream of being a doctor and getting the chance to help people. He could remember every note, every chord, every lyric of every one of those acoustic, raw pop songs that she loved so much throughout the years. He could remember the sound of puddles splashing and metal fences clanging as they ran away from a place they weren’t supposed to be at in the first place.
He could remember the moment when he woke up in her bed, his nostrils intoxicated by her scent that he loved so much and his arms wrapped around her, her head nestled deep in his side, all the what if’s filling his head, imagining what could’ve been if only those few little things were different. He could remember the way his fingers gently traced those three little words endlessly on the skin of her forearm, and the way she let him go on and on for who knows how long while she was awake before she finally mumbled a single, “love you too” and they contently drifted back to sleep.
He could remember being held back by her friends as he helplessly watched the code team rush into the room, desperately hoping that they could help her, that they could help him. He could remember the feeling of pain in his throat as he let out a desperate scream when he saw them step away from where she lifelessly laid, the doctor looking down to his watch and calling time of death.
He could remember the way he felt when Lahela came to their his apartment and cracked the type of joke that she would have told him, the kind he used to enjoy hearing from her, but despised it when it came in somebody else’s voice. He could remember when Bryce quietly uttered a pitiful “I’m sorry” and handed him an envelope. He couldn’t muster up the strength to find out what was inside, so for a long time, he didn’t.
He couldn’t admit it to himself that she was dead and his whole world had fallen silent.
One day, when he finally felt ready to face the music, he went into his living room, picked up one of the throw pillows she bought him to “add a little bit of colour to your monochrome world”, he unzipped it from the side, stuck his hand in and retrieved the letter.
He peeled off the little sticker holding the envelope together and let his hand run over her handwriting on the paper. And for the first time, he finally felt like he was ready to admit that she was actually gone.
To Ethan,
Did Bryce crack a joke or try to cheer you up before he handed you this letter? Did Jackie tease you with an obviously fake amount of sarcasm because she’s too scared to say that she’s been crying? Did Elijah offer to come over to our your place and insist on having a Marvel movie marathon, or offer to watch those boring nature documentaries that you’re too embarrassed to admit you enjoy but everybody already knows you do? Did Sienna bring you all our your favourite baked goods and groceries and enough home-cooked food to feed you and Jenner for the rest of the month? Because I know you, and I know you won’t be able to go out to get your own, and I don’t want you to have to live off my old instant noodles, even though they’re great (for taste, not nutrition).
Well, they should have, because I specifically asked them to do every single bit of it, and I’ll be mad if they don’t force you to take their help, even though I know you’ll try your best to convince them that you’re okay, but I know for a fact that you aren’t.
I don’t want you to shut everyone out of your life now that I’m gone, because I won't be there to help you open back up when you’re ready. I want you to embrace their help and maybe even embrace them. (What? A girl can’t dream?)
Most importantly, I don’t want you to feel empty. It’s perfectly fine to feel sad and to grieve, but don’t let yourself feel empty. I’m still here, I always will be, which means I’ll be watching you, so I don’t want you to associate me with sadness, because I deserve so much better than that and you know it.
I want you to get everyone together, and I mean everyone. Pick a place to sit down (extra points if it’s on a roof with lots of alcohol, ask Bryce about that) and talk about your favourite memories of me. I know everyone has good ones. I’m giving you explicit permission right now to tell them about the...snorkeling incident, only because I love you so much and I know you’ve been dying longing to embarrass me and tell everyone about what happened. You remember it, right? Y’know what, I’m gonna take this time to get ahead of the story so you don’t paint me in too bad of a light.
It was two years ago, you had just discharged a very wealthy patient. Who, for the record, was totally into you, I mean the lady took every opportunity possible to sneak a look at your ass (I should know, as I would’ve done the same thing in her position). She gave you the contact number to her travel agency, where she had booked a 3-day trip to an ultra-swanky private island holiday that she and her husband couldn’t go to as she was on bed rest for another week.
You were going to refuse it and let it go to waste (like the idiot you were are), but I convinced you that we could make it a friends’ getaway from the busy Boston life, and you agreed.
4 hours and a lot of owed favours to cover shifts later, we were toes deep in the smoothest sand I’d ever had the pleasure of experiencing in my life. The only thing your patient failed to mention was that it was a couples retreat, which we definitely weren’t (back then, at least). It was too late to go back, so we just decided to make the most of it.
We were snorkeling, and I was having the time of my life...until I spotted a jellyfish. I know you’re laughing at this right now, so stop it. I panicked and started yelling for you to swim back to shore, but you came to me instead, and in the midst of all the panic, I got stung. It was a pain to swim back to shore, and I was totally gonna ask you to pee on my leg if the stinging continued (as a last resort, because I’m not that gross), but you knocked some sense in me by reminding me that white vinegar works so much better.
It would’ve been all fine if it ended there, but it most definitely did not. The lifeguard didn’t have any vinegar, but the restaurant was nearby. I practically sprinted into the kitchen and stole the first bottle of vinegar I could find, somehow dodging all the guards that were shouting at me. (I’m fairly sure I’m still a wanted patron there, but I’m not going back anytime soon)
We made it back to our suite, the pain had subsided a little but the swelling wasn’t looking like it would anytime soon. I passed you the bottle to open...and it wasn’t vinegar. I still have no clue how my mind was THAT clouded that I grabbed a bottle of vodka instead of vinegar. There was no way I was going back to the restaurant, so I snatched the bottle back and took a swig, and oh god was it strong. I think the burning at the back of my throat was worse than whatever the jellyfish could’ve done to me. And you were laughing, you were laughing so hard at me, who was in so much pain, and I’m pretty sure I heard a snort in between your uncontrollable fits of laughter, how dare you?? I know you’re still laughing at this now and I hate you for it.
We spent the rest of the night talking and drinking (and you making petty jabs at me), and it was the best night of my life, minus the whole jellyfish fiasco. The rest of the trip was even better, do you remember us pretending to be a couple to enter that competition and winning a private dinner on a yacht? I loved every second of it, and I didn’t know it yet, but I loved you too.
You’re smiling, right? Good, because that’s exactly how I want it to be, I want you to smile when you think of me, I want you to remember all the good times we had, and forget the bad. I want you to be happy when you think of me, even though our last shared memory wasn’t the best one. When you think of me, hopefully you’ll feel the same way as I do when I think of you: lucky that I fell in love with the most incredible, generous, sweet, comforting person I know, and the person who’s been by my side right from the very first apple slice.
I know it’ll be hard, I know that you’ll struggle with all the firsts after me, the first time you go out, the first time you smile, the first time you visit me, the first shift you pick up at the hospital, the first time you feel happy without me, the first person you can talk to about all the things we used to talk about late at night when I couldn’t sleep, the first time you get nervous and you heart starts to race just by the sight of someone else, the first kiss you have without feeling guilty that it isn’t me you’re sharing the moment with, the first I love you with someone else. As much as I want to be the one you share all of it with, the one you spend the rest of your life loving, I can’t. But I still want you to have it, every single little bit of good that you have, I want you to keep it and treasure it, because you deserve it. You deserve all the good in the world and so much more.
Most importantly, I want you to move on. Shed all the tears that you need to and hold on to every one of my possessions for as long as you need, hide in as many supply closets and pour your feelings out as many times as you need to, but one day I want you to be able to read this letter with a smile on your face and let the light of the world shine down on you, because that’ll be me up there, making sure you know that I’m always looking out for you.
Since the first day I saw you in your little blue button-down, to when you helped me up when I fell off my bike, to when you sneaked me out of my dorm room to get midnight milkshakes, to when we passed our boards, to when you stood by my side at the trial during intern year, to when we had that picnic at the park, to right now, as I write my letter to you, to the day I go, to the day after that, and the day after that, and the day after that, and every single day after that. I don’t regret most of the things I’ve done in my life, even all the bad choices I’ve made. The only regret I have is not realising just how much I cared about you earlier, we could have been so much greater if we weren’t so stupid. It’s almost poetic, don’t you think?
Eventually, one day, when I see you again, I’ll be able to tell it to you myself, but for now, you’re just gonna have to make it through with the words in this letter.
I love you, Ethan Jonah Ramsey, now and forever.
With every single ounce of my love,
Your best friend.
Bryce
It’s Saturday. It’s a beautiful day in Honolulu, Hawaii. Warm and sunny exactly what the doctor ordered. I smile.
We opened the door leading out into the garden. A fresh ocean breeze is wafting inside the kitchen. I breathe in the scent and my body instantly calms down. Moving to Honolulu was the best decision we’ve ever made.
I look over at Luna who’s standing barefoot in the kitchen.
Luna and I are at home making breakfast and listening to DNCE song kissing strangers.
It’s my favorite time of the day. To make some breakfast. Well, Luna is making breakfast I’m just eating.
Damn, I have to put in some time at the gym. Maybe I can convince Luna to come with me. I laugh at that as I put my arms around Luna who leans into me.
Luna puts the stove off and I help her to put the food on the table outside in the garden.
“Don’t eat all the goods,“ Luna squats my hand away as I steal some bacon.
“Why? I can see only one snack and the job is taken,“ I say and Luna just shakes her head at me.
“You’re unbelievable you know that?“ she says and throws a napkin at me.
“You mean I’m unbelievably attractive? I know thanks,“ I say and Luna just laughs.
“And so humble too. I hope you won’t be too disappointed when I beat your very attractive ass later at minigolf,“ she says eating some bacon and we share some of her fruit salad.
I stop putting fruit on my plate and I eye her grinning.
“Really? And how will you do that? You usually lose. Sorry I love you Lu but you’re bad at bowling and I don’t think you’re going to beat me at mini golf,“ I say and eat some pineapple.
“You’re so sweet when you think you’re the only one who can win. I was gonna share a secret talent with orange soda, but I don’t know since I’m not going to win maybe another time,“ she says and I know she’s teasing but now I want to know more.
“You’re such a tease,“ I point my mango piece at her and she snatches it up with her mouth.
“Hey I was going to eat that,“ I say and grab another piece.
“Looks like you lost,“ she winks and chews on the mango piece.
I eye Luna from across the table as we eat in silence.
“Is it okay that Aubrey is coming along?“ I ask hesitantly since Luna and Aubrey, one of my fellow surgeon colleagues at Kuakini Medical Center, haven’t had the greatest start.
Luna shrugs.
“I’d like to get to know her. I mean she seemed pretty nice a few months ago when we had that pinktober event at the university,“ Luna says.
“She’s an exceptional surgeon. She’s giving me a run for my money. I know she’s had some personal problems that she’s dealing with. She can be bitchy but she usually doesn’t mean it.“ I say and catch Luna's hand in mine when her hand starts tapping on the table and drawing circles on the back of her hand. She smiles softly at me. Her green dress with daisies glowing with her.
“Before you ask I’m not saying this because I have any romantic feelings. I respect her a lot as a person and as a surgeon. I just think you’ve had a rocky start that’s all,“ I say and she grins.
“I think so too. I’d love to get to know her. I think she’s great. Maybe she’ll beat you at mini golf too,“ she says and I roll my eyes making Luna laugh.
Luna
There’s nothing more relaxing than going mini golfing with friends. And even better? It’s blacklight mini golf. How amazing is that? This is going to be great I can already tell.
Everyone is here at this super cool blacklight mini golf place called Glow Putt right here in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Everyone is here. Ethan and Hayley. My triplet cousins Evie, Soraya, and Skyler.
Elijah, Jackie, Sienna, and Tobias.
Rafael and Kyra couldn’t make it. Rafael had to work and Kyra said she had a date, which I’m super curious about. Can’t wait for the details. When it comes to dates? Kyra always has great stories to tell.
Our newest friends Aubrey and Meilani are here too. They both work with Bryce at the Kuakini Medical Center.
Aubrey dressed in a jade green flowy dress.
Aubrey is a surgeon just like Bryce.
Meilani dressed in a yellow, floral print silk dress, that ends a bit above the knees and some floral crochet sandals.
Meiliani is also my OB/GYN, she’s great. She and Sor hit it off ever since they first met. I can tell they’re great together.
Aubrey? I’m not so sure about her. But maybe she’s nice. Deep down. I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt. It’s never cool to judge someone, based on one time you’ve met them. Maybe you’ve met them when they had a bad day.
I smile as I lean into Bryce and don’t feel guilty for totally inhaling the scent of his shirt. He bought a new cologne recently because his old one was too much for me. Certain smells affect me a lot more now that I’m pregnant.
I play with Bryce’s hands as we‘re standing together by one of the holes.
The dark room is illuminated by vibrant neon colors, such as lemon, lime green, hot pink, aqua blue, electric orange, and vibrant purple.
The art is amazing. Whole scenes from the jungle and the deep blue ocean world are painted onto the walls and the floor. I think this could become my new favorite place.
I look around and see everyone in their little groups hanging out talking and laughing. I smile.
My cousins Evie, Sky, and Soraya are leaning on their golf clubs, all three of them opted for jeans, though Soraya and Evie both wear colorful blouses, while Sky is wearing one of his Hawaii shirts.
Tobias stands next to them in a white shirt and dark jeans. He must be telling a joke since all three of my cousins are hollering with laughter.
When I look further to my left I see Hayley in her lavender dress leaning into Ethan who’s wearing a grey shirt and dark blue jeans.
He smiles at Hayley. It’s a rare occasion for Ethan to smile, but it’s always nice to see.
Meilani and Aubrey joined in on the fun of playing blacklight minigolf, after their shift. Just to let out some steam after a long day at work.
Jackie, Sienna, Elijah, and Aurora are joking about a patient who got naked whenever someone entered his room. Jackie in her metallic dress and sneakers, is teasing Sienna that he’s got the hots for her. I caught the name Lucas and smiled.
Adam who stands next to Maxi with his hands in his jeans pockets and a dark olive green shirt smiles at Maxi. Maxi stands next to him and is wearing one of her cut-off jeans shorts and a super lacy camisole. She’s smiling and whispering something to Adam. Looks like things are looking up for those two. I’m excited to see my girl happy.
She catches me staring at them and grins. I blow her a kiss and she laughs out loud.
Keiki couldn’t make it since she had to study for her finals for December, but said to send pics of how her brother embarrasses himself. I will deliver embarrassing pics of Bryce.
”Are we going to stand around like a bunch of weirdos or are we going to play golf? Because that’s the sole reason we came here right? To have some fun and to show that surgeons can win at mini golf,“ I hear Aubrey say and everyone looks at her.
Ethan raises his eyebrows at her words.
Tobias's voice comes from beside my cousins.
”Well since you and Bryce are the only surgeons here I don’t know how you think you’ll win,“ Tobias just grins his green eye sparkling in the dim light.
Aubrey just smiles at him. Her face is saying ”Game on.“
I grin and look between them. I clear my throat.
Everyone shifts around and it becomes an awkward silence, while everyone introduces themselves.
Well, our group of friends is getting bigger and it’s nice if we know each other.
After that, we stand around not sure what to say next. Should we play or how do we go about it? Honestly, I’m not someone who’s at a loss for words but this time around? I feel a bit nervous and anxious.
Bryce takes my hand in his to help me and I grin thankfully at him. Skin-to-skin contact helps me with my anxiety.
I gnaw on my lip and try to think of something to say when Jackie breaks the silence and asks no one in particular.
”How about girls vs boys?“ she looks around.
”I wanted to be on Ethan’s team,“ I pout a bit disappointed.
Bryce bristles.
”Wait what? I thought we were a team?“ he asks.
Everyone chuckles.
”Looks like your woman showed you up Lahela,“ Tobias comments.
”Oh please I’ve won against Luna a couple of times,“ Bryce comments.
I smirk at B, lean into him and whisper.
”We’re always a team babe. Especially in bed…“ I whisper and leave the sentence hanging in the air. He just smirks.
”I can play dirty if that’s what you want. It’s my favorite,“ he says suggestively and I laugh much to the groaning of everyone else.
”Get a room,“ Ethan and Aubrey say at the same time.
Bryce and I grin and share a smile.
”Is it just me? Or does anyone else think this is creepy?“ Elijah asks and I add.
”Me too. They’re almost the same person. Though Ethan is a bit grumpier, which makes him adorable,“ I say and Sienna nods in my direction.
”I thought I was the only one who thought so,“ she says and we fist-bump each other.
Ethan sighs deeply.
”Can we please just play? I don’t want to have front-row seats for Lahela's make-out session. I’m getting annoyed by this banter and about the fact that you’re trying to make it about me,“ he says his tone getting grumpy.
Bryce can’t resist adding.
”Oh come on man you’d learn a thing or two,“ B adds.
Ethan just sighs.
”If you’re talking about tips on how to make out? I’ll pass. Thanks though,“ Ethan replies.
Hayley leans over and gives his stubbled cheek a light kiss.
”We love you grumpy and all,“ she says and keeps going.
”Though you’re right let’s play some minigolf. So I can finally beat your ass at something Ramsey,“ she says and earns hollers and laughs from everyone.
”Careful Rookie,“ a slight glint in his deep blue eyes.
She winks at him.
”Don’t you mean Valentine-Ramsey? Also if I act out you can just punish me later,“ she says and grins.
Jackie says loud enough for everyone in our group to hear.
”This is why I don’t like to spend time with Hayley and Ethan. They always talk about their sex life. Which is creepy,“ she says.
Hayley turns around.
”We can talk about yours,“ she says saucily.
Jackie laughs.
”You couldn’t stomach mine,“ she says and winks.
We all laugh.
Soraya chimes in.
”I think Jackie’s idea of girls vs. boys wasn’t so bad. We can wipe the floor with the guys,“ she says earning a high-five from Aubrey who decided to join in on the fun.
”Real talk. Let’s get started,“ Bryce says.
I’m still bummed I don’t get to be on Ethan’s team.
He sees my face and asks.
”Why don’t we mix it up a bit,“ Ethan asks, and everyone boos at him.
Bryce looks at me and says.
”Sure if you want to lose, let Luna be on your team,“ he teases.
I gasp and squint my eyes at my fiancé. Bryce comes back to kiss me, and my lips still tingle from our kiss even after the kiss ended. I smile.
Then he goes back to stand with the guys. The others laugh.
”Scared of losing Ramsey?“ Aurora asks her eyes twinkling.
Ethan smiles and shrugs.
”Have it your way. So what’s the losing team got to do?“ he asks and nobody has an answer to that.
”I’ve got it. Two words. Skinny dipping, huh?“ Sky asks.
Evie and Soraya say at the same time.
”Gross Sky. I don’t want to be scarred for life,“ they say shuddering both.
He sighs.
”Fine. Fair enough,“ he says.
”Why doesn’t the losing team just buy a round for the winning team?“ Sienna suggests.
We all nod and agree that that’s probably the best idea.
After we started playing I stand to the side and lean on my golf club. Just to breathe for a second.
Bryce puts his hands on my belly.
”Are you sure this isn’t too much for you? You’ve been up since early this morning,“ he asks concern lacing his every word.
”Is it weird that I find it hot that you’re concerned? But seriously I’m fine. The light breeze is doing wonders for me. The heat before was a bit much, to be honest,“ I say.
He puts a hand over my forehead. When he’s satisfied he takes his hand away.
Then he checks my pulse.
”Your pulse is a little high,“ he says.
”It’s because you’re standing next to me. Your beauty blinds me,“ I say teasing him.
He leans closer and pulls me behind a tree, out of sight of the others.
I can hear someone ask but can’t make out the voice too invested in Bryce‘s touch to care who asked.
”Where are Luna and Bryce?“
Sky laughs.
”They’re making out behind that tree,“ he laughs louder when heads turn in our direction.
”Just ignore them,“ he says smiling.
Bryce grins against my lips and we lean more into the shadows. Obscured from the view of the others. I just hope this tree won’t fall.
Evie says loud enough for me to hear.
”Let’s move to the next hole. They’ll catch up,“ she says.
I can hear someone making a dirty joke about the word hole, but too far into Bryce putting my right leg over his hip and kissing his way down my throat.
”I feel bad for making out when we’re supposed to spend time with our friends and family,“ I say gnawing on my lip.
He kisses me again and every thought of guilt flies out the window. We stand like that for what seems like an eternity.
Before we both smile and just decide to go back to the game. Lacing our fingers together.
”How are the guys already in the lead? The game just started!“ I say sadly to see that the guys lead and well the girls got a bit behind.
”I don’t care I’ve already won,“ he says kissing our interlaced fingers.
I look at him.
”How so?“ I ask totally confused.
”Because I got to lock lips with my favorite person,“ he says.
”Glad we could spend some time together. Though we were making out for some time and the girls got behind,“ I say.
Bryce laughs.
”Oh you and the others can still catch up,“ he grins.
”Oh? So you think you already got this huh? Nice try Lahela,“ I say and we join the others.
The make-out session was great, but I do want to play mini golf. That’s what we came here to do.
I’m standing together with Meilani, while Bryce is lining up his shot.
She whispers.
”Damn. I’m into women. But holy damn. Bryce? You’re a lucky woman,“ she says pointing with the putt in Bryce’s direction while watching Soraya laugh about a joke Sienna made.
I sigh while I watch him. His muscles move as he pulls up his shirt to dab away at some sweat on his brow.
I grin looking at his abs, which you can see from here. Feeling a little guilty, since I don’t love him just for his body. His mind is just as beautiful. But I can’t help checking him out. Who would fault me for that? He’s hot. I grin.
”It’s cruel that he looks this good. Though I guess you’re swooning over Sor,“ I grin and earn a chuckle from Meilani.
I get serious and dart a glance toward Meilani.
”By the way can I ask you something?“ I say not able to look her in the eye.
Meilani turns my way. Directing her whole attention to me. Giving me a sense of tranquility with her easygoing smile and the calmness I always feel when I’m around her. She’s the quiet to my inner storm.
She has a very excitable and bubbly personality similar to my own, but when it comes down to it. She’s very zen-like.
”Of course. What’s up,“ she asks. Playing with her bracelet. I look closely and see she’s wearing a yellow, floral print silk dress, that ends a bit above the knees and some floral crochet sandals. I like it it’s very Meilani.
I bite my lip, feeling super uncomfortable asking this.
”Do you think it’s normal, to be this turned on all the time?“ I ask her.
I’m probably looking as red as a fire hydrant. Sometimes I still get embarrassed when I ask certain questions.
She smiles and puts her hand on my arms.
”Your hormones are all over the place. It’s completely normal to want to have sex,“ she says and continues.
”You’re 7 months pregnant. But if you’re worried about hurting the babies, you don’t need to worry. They don’t mind it actually, studies have shown that babies get more relaxed and calm,“ she says and I gape at her.
”What? No way,“ I say sounding disbelieving.
She pats my shoulder.
”Trust me. The babies don’t mind. Just be careful not to be too rough. No experimental positions. I can give you a list of safe positions,“ she asks.
I blush furiously.
”Isn’t this convo weird?“ I ask.
She hugs me from the side.
”Not at all. I’m your doctor and your friend so it’s all good. We are friends right?“ she asks hesitantly.
I kiss her on her cheek.
”Of course you are. I’m glad we met,“ I say.
”Me too. I’ll send you that list,“ she says and walks off toward Soraya.
I nod and walk over to Bryce. I hug him and he pulls me close.
”There you are sunshine,“ he says giving me a soft kiss on my temple.
I tear up at the word sunshine.
He smiles and tucks me into him and I mumble something incoherent that probably sounded something like
”Love boo“.
”Love you too,“ he says kissing me once more before we walk towards the others.
I smile at Bryce and say to him.
”Want to know a secret?“ I ask him and he leans closer to me.
”You give the best hugs,“ I say and add ”With and without clothes,“ I say and he laughs out loud throwing his head back.
The others turn to us but when they see Bryce laughing so hard they start grinning too.
”Want to share with the class Lahela?“ Tobias asks and the others snicker.
He shakes his head at Tobias. And grins at me.
”Nope. This is not for your guy's ears,“ he says and gives me another kiss pulling me towards him and taking my cheeks into his warm, calloused hands.
They‘re all laughing and teasing each other. Having a great time.
”Oh, man. That doesn’t count. You cheated Sor. You guys saw that right? I can’t be the only one,“ Sky says.
I look over at the hole where Soraya's golf ball went into.
”Looks like the ball went through,“ I say and earn a grin from Soraya.
Sienna joins in.
”Yeah. Totally. Maybe you can learn a thing or two from us. So you wouldn’t miss all the time,“ she says and grins.
Sky throws up his hands.
”Everyone is ganging up on me,“ Sky complains.
Soraya laughs.
”Because you’re an easy target that we all love,“ she says grinning at him.
Ethan is the next who is lining up his shot.
“You better not miss Ramsey,“ Tobias says and gets a nod from Elijah and Sky.
Ethan just shakes his head.
“You guys are worse than interns,“ he says and the ball goes inside the hole.
Sky and Tobias run to him to hug him and Ethan is sandwiched between them. You can tell he feels uncomfortable.
Hayley just takes a pic.
She sees me and winks. Oh, this will definitely be sent to our group chat.
“See the guys are in the lead again,“ Sky says and grins at Ethan like they won some championship. I chuckle. I love my cousin.
“Okay okay enough with the hugs,“ Ethan sighs and when I see his mouth quirk up at the corners I can tell he wants to rile Sky up a bit. I grin and shake my head at Ethan.
“The girls can still win you know?“ Ethan points out and lets Hayley take the next one.
“Oh come on why ruin your win from a couple of seconds ago?“ Sky asks and glares at Ethan.
“I’m just stating a fact,“ Ethan replies grinning.
Hayley scores too and I can hear the guys groan.
Hayley gets a high-five from Sienna.
Ethan is right, we can still win this.
An hour later…
Luna
The boys lost to the girls.
I’m sitting down at the table of a restaurant we chose. I love the Christmas decorations they’ve put up. It’s very Hawaiian and tropical. Christmas songs are playing through the speakers.
So we picked a restaurant to celebrate at. One that isn’t too far away.
I love this place. Whenever we want to relax we come here. They have great food and them staff here is so nice and welcoming.
We choose a table that can actually seat all of us. Bryce and Sky went to take the first drinks with help from the other guys.
I’m sitting down and looking at the menu to decide what to order. I can feel like someone is standing next to my seat and when I look up I find a pair of brown eyes looking at me with uncertainty in their depths.
It’s Aubrey. We didn’t exactly get on from the start, but maybe we can talk and see if we’ve both just had a bad day.
“Is this seat taken?“ she asks hesitating to sit next to me.
I shake my head and make room for her.
“Just so you know? If I have to pee? Girl you’ll have to get up,“ I say and she grins.
“Deal,“ she says and an awkward silence settles around us.
I gnaw on my lip trying to think of something to say and to sort of break the ice, but Aubrey speaks first.
“I’m sorry I’ve been a bitch a couple of months ago when we met at the hospital. I’ve had a bad day, which is no excuse, but I wasn’t nice and I know you’re an awesome woman. At least what Bryce has said about you. He talks about you all the time by the way,“ she smiles and it transforms her seemingly cold demeanor to warm and friendly.
Like coming home from the cold and nestling in front of the fireplace to get warm.
”You’re right you were a bit bitchy. But I wasn’t nice either. It was that day I found out I was pregnant,“ I say nibbling on my upper lip.
Aubrey raises her eyebrows in surprise.
”Really? And here I go making a bad impression. To be honest I wanted you to like me. I’ve heard so many good things about you. From Bryce and Meilani,“ she smiles.
I grin at her. Feeling that this is the start of a new friendship.
I see Bryce and the other guys walk back to the table to put the drink orders down. And some of the food that’s ready. The other food orders aren’t done yet.
He keeps darting glances at me and Aubrey.
”Is it safe? Did you guys make up? Because I‘d hate it if it got awkward for all of us. No offense babe,“ he says and kisses me on the top of my head.
Someone throws a fry at me. When I look up I see that it’s by Aubrey.
”That was frying cute,“ I can’t resist adding while Bryce sits next to me and laughs silently.
Aubrey just rolls her eyes at me.
I grin even wider. Making her laugh will be a fun, new mission to have.
”God. You’re as bad with puns as Lahela is.“
Bryce looks up from the menu and frowns.
”Hey!“ he exclaims.
I lean into him and direct my attention toward Aubrey.
I point said throwing fry at Aubrey and take a bite.
”Don’t be such a fry-baby,“ I say not running out of fry puns.
The crispness and the saltiness of the fry give me almost an orgasm. But I tone it down since I’m in public.
Bryce snickers from the side. I wink at him.
Aubrey looks at us. Narrowing her eyes at me.
”You’re doing this on purpose aren’t you? I knew I should’ve ordered something stronger tonight. I’ll be right back,“ she says and is gone to get herself something stronger.
I lean into Bryce and when the rest of the food gets to the table I sigh with happiness. Food makes everything better.
Luna
Later that night I’m lying in bed next to Bryce. The door to our balcony is open to let in the moonlight shining into our bedroom.
I get up and check if Bryce woke up but he doesn’t even stir. Poor baby must be exhausted.
I smile and sit outside in one of the dark grey wicker armchairs and just look out at the ocean.
I lean back in the chair and hug my knees tight to my body. That’s when I feel a sudden kick. I look down and put my hand on my belly to see if it’ll happen again and when it does I get so excited. Oh my gosh. I feel tears running down my face. Who would’ve thought I’d have this life someday?
To be in a great relationship, be engaged, soon I’ll be married and two little ones running around the house.
I walk back into our bedroom and lie down next to B. I gently try and wake him up and when he does, he sees me smiling and raises an eyebrow.
”What?“ he asks half-asleep already.
I take his hand in mine and guide it to my stomach. Hoping the twins might kick again.
When they do he opens his eyes and I can tell he’s fully awake.
”Did that just happen?“ he asks his voice full of wonder.
I just nod and moves further down to put both of his hands on my stomach. He waits for a few heartbeats but when the kick doesn’t happen again he sighs, though he still smiles softly.
”I wanted to feel it again,“ he says sounding sad.
”They’re not circus performers. Though that would be so cool,” I say.
He grins at me.
“I love all these new memories we’re making together.”
Bryce kisses me softly and I lean into him.
We both smile at each other sharing this beautiful moment. Just us and no one else.
This right here is where I belong.
The following weeks felt like months. Work was long, it was stressful, and it was exhausting. Sometimes all Suki wanted to do was curl up into a ball in bed and sleep for as long as possible, letting the stress of working long hours in hospital compress out of her. Sometimes, she wanted to bundle up on the sofa and watch movies with her roommates. But sometimes, Suki wanted to release her tension in other ways. Ways that involved Bryce Lahela.
They left before the morning, were careful with their grip and kisses so as to not leave any marks, and they kept work at work. The arrangement was working out perfectly, and the rules proved successful as well.
So, on paper, everything was going fine.
And everything was still fine when Halloween rolled around and the roommates planned a relaxed evening at Donahue’s followed by horror movies. They didn’t really get a chance to dress up due to work schedules and a lack of time, but they were dressed up in spirit.
They arrived early and snagged a booth: Jackie and Suki squeezing in on one side and Sienna and Aurora on the other. Elijah wheeled his chair under the head of the table. They chatted for a bit before Sienna jumped up to order a round.
A few beers and shots (courtesy of Jackie) later, the group were having some in depth conversations, making jokes, and generally enjoying each others company.
There was a rowdy, annoying group of surgical interns stood nearby the entrance. No sign of Bryce there, however. Suki was somewhat disappointed, it was an amusing thought to her to see Bryce out the open again since they’d made their rules. She’d been to his a couple of times since then, but they hadn’t seen each other all that much really. Those times had been quick and at the end of long work days too, so Suki was looking forward to being able to draw things out a bit more at some point soon. She’d been quite obviously avoiding hookups at her house if it could be helped, because there were too many risk factors.
Plus, with him being a surgeon his hours were completely different to Suki’s, and actually stealing moments could prove tricky. She might’ve been one of the best medical interns, but word at Edenbrook was that Bryce was excelling over all the surgical interns, actually being able to watch a few surgeries, too.
That being said, she was glad he wasn’t there. She was able to enjoy a lovely evening with her roommates without thinking about only her carnal desires.
But as though the world was sending her a sign, the bell over the door rang to indicate someone entering. Bryce entered by himself, walking straight past the rowdy group of surgical interns and heading right for the roommates. He was wearing a plain black tee and distressed blue jeans, a very different look to his green scrubs.
What was he doing here, if not to see the surgical interns? Had he come to drink… alone? Or had one of the roommates told him they’d be there? They had invited him to the housewarming party, after all.
Then again, if it wasn’t for that party, they never would have come to their little agreement.
There was a knowing smirk on his face as he got closer to the group.
Suki felt her stomach contract a little; they hadn’t really interacted that much as a group since the two had devised their little plan. She wasn’t going to let anything slip, but she couldn’t promise she wouldn’t be maybe a little awkward. Just a tad.
“Hey man! Come join us,” Elijah invited. Bryce grinned and squeezed in beside Suki on the bench.
She cleared her throat uncomfortably, not looking Bryce in the eye as she gave a greeting nod. His leg pressed against hers where they sat, and he was now so close that Suki could smell his cologne. Of course, nowadays, she only smelt that when they were having sex, so the smell brought her head right back to all those moments.
“Don’t you have friends over there?” Suki asked, motioning her head to where the group of surgical interns were congregated. They were now laughing obnoxiously about something.
An odd expression flashed over his face suddenly but was quickly warped into a smirk. “Well I’d rather spend time with you lovely nose wipers.”
“Oi!” Protested Jackie.
“Welcome! Enjoy our Halloween celebrations. They’re pretty lowkey this year, I wish we could all dress up and go to a party or something but, work calls,” Sienna rushed, smiling at Bryce opposite her.
Now that he was closer, and his hands lay casually on the table in front of him, Suki could see a few silver rings assorted over his long fingers. Interesting. She had an impulse to reach out and brush her fingers over them, or to have them dig into her own fingers, her body. And from that moment, she was screwed for the rest of the night. Serves you right for being so goddamn thirsty.
A few hours later, more drinks down and the thoughts having continued through her head, Suki nudged Bryce gently with her shoulder. They’d all been talking as a group for the night, so they hadn’t spoken one-on-one at all yet. He looked over at her, his face pretty close due to them sitting in such proximity. She brushed her nose with her middle finger - she could pass it off as a simple scratch. Bryce smirked. His eyes flicked subtlety down to Suki’s lips, and he chuckled under his breath, moving a thumb over his bottom lip and hanging his head when he looked away from her.
Just as he was about to slide off the bench and make up an excuse to leave, Sienna shouted:
“Guys! According to google maps there’s a walking ghost tour nearby. We should go!”
“I’m kinda spent-“ Bryce began.
“No! No way you’re bailing on this, Lahela. You’re one of us ‘nose wipers’ now. We bought you drinks!” Sienna cut him off, her sweet features contorting into mock anger.
He blew air from his cheeks, but he didn’t seem annoyed. “Is everyone going?”
“I… guess?” Added Suki.
“I’m… not sure,” hesitated Elijah.
“They’re not scary, Elijah. It’s just a load of paranormal bullshit,” Jackie said.
After a bit of coaxing and a couple more shots, the group headed out of Donahue’s. They walked down a few roads before they found a man in a long leather coat holding a lantern. Sienna bounded up to him and handed him some money, the others pointing out they’d pay her back later. He introduced himself as Henry and noted that they’d wait for some more people.
Bryce and Suki kept glancing at each-other, knowing their previous plans were probably not likely to happen. Nonetheless, Sienna’s excitement was rubbing off on everyone, and even Elijah seemed into the idea. Jackie and Aurora were discussing whether or not they believed in ghosts.
Soon enough, a large group had formed around Henry, and he went into an animated sing-songy tale about the ghost history around that area of Boston.
“And in this very alley…” Henry said dramatically a little later, “is where the ghost resides. AH!” Henry let out a loud shout, causing Suki to jump back into Aurora.
“You okay?” Aurora laughed. Suki nodded with a flustered chuckle, then Henry continued leading them down the road.
Well, that wasn’t at all embarrassing.
“Awwww, don’t tell me you’re scared, Santa Fe?” Bryce sidled up beside her.
“Of course I’m not scared!” She protested, “it’s easy to be shocked by a jump scare,” she turned her face ever so slightly, obstructing the tell-tale look on her face from Bryce’s gaze.
Henry was a fantastic story teller, emphasising the right parts and using his face and body to convey the different emotions; the group found themselves being swept up in the story. Or, facts, if one believed in the supernatural. Things were calming down a little in terms of the group being freaked out, and every now and again Bryce would lean over to Suki and whisper some kind of commentary about Henry’s story. She could just tell he was the type to talk through movies. But she didn’t mind, and actually found it quite amusing.
Then, just seconds later, a young group of guys were walking past and noticed the ghost tour, and simultaneously jumped and shouted at the touring group. It was a poor attempt to scare them. At this, however, Bryce himself yelped loudly and backed into Suki. She caught him, even though he was heavy.
“Awww, don’t tell me you’re scared, Scalpel Jockey? And of teenagers?” Suki mocked in an echo of his words before, holding the backs of his biceps in support. He had no jacket on, so his arms were chilly and she could feel the faint goosebumps on his skin. She found herself hoping her grip might warm him up a little. She was a doctor, after all. After a few seconds Suki let go of Bryce and the two scrambled a little to catch up with the group.
“How was I supposed to know they were just kids?!”
Suki threw her head back with a cackle as the image of Bryce cowering away from a group of teenage boys replayed in her mind. She raised an eyebrow at him, pulling her lips into her mouth.
“I wasn’t scared, obviously. No ones scared of teenagers. Well, maybe those people Gerard Way was talking about,” he laughed, his cocky demeanour flooding back into his words and face.
“And old people. Actually – lots of people find teenagers scary.”
“Well, not me.”
“Wouldn’t have pegged you as an MCR kid, though.”
“Only on the down-low,” he gave her a wink, “I was far too cool for that at school.”
“Right,” she scoffed, “Just too cool. Cool enough that you basically shat yourself at a random guy fucking with us.”
“You jumped a minute ago!”
“Yeah, along with half the tour group.”
He harrumphed. She shoved him playfully with her shoulder, partly as part of the conversation, but partly to put a little distance between them. There was still some alcohol lurking in her system and she just wanted to pull him into the alley from before, but, she couldn’t. He didn’t come closer again after the nudge.
“Shhh!” Chastised Jackie from in front of them, who was utterly engaged in Henry’s commentary. Bryce and Suki exchanged a look and tried to keep their laughter as quiet as possible.
—-
Later on, the group were walking up toward their apartment, discussing the night’s events. Everyone had a great time, even if it might not have been the Halloween they were all used to. They walked in a staggered lump, moving fluidly between each-other. Their voices carried down the empty Boston residential blocks, yellowed streetlights illuminating their smiling faces, setting the mood for the comedown of the night perfectly.
“…The Shining, duh. And we can’t forget The Conjuring, or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. These are classics, Aurora,” Elijah babbled along to the group.
“I vote Halloweentown,” piped up Sienna. Aurora laughed and dug her keys out of her pocket.
“Bryce, you coming in for movies?” Asked Elijah.
“Ah,” he looked over at Suki very briefly, “best not. It might be Halloween but I don’t function well on no sleep. Plus, I’ve intruded for long enough.”
Suki knew that if Bryce stayed there was every chance he’d be ending the night in her bedroom, and she’d been avoiding that since the Aurora situation.
“Killjoy,” chuckled Jackie, giving him a friendly smack on the back before entering the apartment building.
“See you next time!” Sienna pulled Bryce in for a hug, her tiny frame dwarfed by his six odd feet and broad stature. Elijah and Aurora chimed in with their farewells.
“Well… goodnight then,” nodded Suki. She didn’t go in for any kind of farewell, it wasn’t really their style. Particularly not in the company of others.
“Yeah. See you around.”
There was a moment where they kind of stared at each-other that felt like it went on for hours, but in reality was brief.
And with that, Bryce walked off down the road. There was an odd pang in Suki’s chest at the missed opportunity as she watched his figure get smaller and smaller. She’d been waiting since she’d given him the signal at Donahue’s for a chance to sneak off, trying not to look at him too much during the ghost tour or walk too close to him. There was just something ridiculously engaging about paying too much attention to Bryce Lahela that made her lose all her other thoughts. Even if she didn’t really want him to come in given everyone else, there was a sort of disappointment that he hadn’t seemed to want to come in. He’d only given her the briefest look and there was no signal, no attempt to continue the night. But it obviously just wasn’t in the cards for her to get laid that night.
That being said, Suki had enjoyed herself way more than she’d anticipated: the tour itself was entertaining, and of course spending time with her friends. And… Bryce wasn’t all that bad. Maybe sex wasn’t all he was good for. But either way, she couldn’t let herself get too tangled up in the other aspects of his personality, it would get messy.
“Come on then,” Sienna ushered the rest of them inside.
—-
“Hey,” Bryce’s voice rose up from behind where Suki sat eating a sandwich in the cafeteria. She turned to face him, bread stuffed in her mouth, and followed him with her eyes as he took the seat opposite her.
“Hmi,” she tried to say through her mouthful.
He barked out a laugh and pulled a shiny red apple from his pocket, flipping it round in his hands.
“When you’ve finished your mouthful,” he wiggled his eyebrows, “you free tonight?”
“Yeah, why?”
He gave her a disbelieving smirk. “You know why.” He took a casual bite from the apple, the crisp crunch ringing in her ears over the ruckus of the cafeteria.
She laughed, realising. “Sorry, still in Doctor mode. You could’ve texted, you know.”
“Eh, you were here, I needed a seat to eat my apple in. So?”
“Yeah, I’m free. I’ll drop by after my shift.”
“Cool.” He took another crunch from his apple and stood from the table, gave Suki a nod, and then swaggered off out of the cafeteria without a look back.
“See ya,” she muttered to herself.
Didn’t he just say he wanted to sit down and eat his apple?
—-
Suki exhaled breathlessly as Bryce rolled away from her body. They were both left in a sheen of sweat and exhausted. After a couple of moments for the duo to catch their breath, Bryce turned to face his body to her, propping his head up on his hand.
“So, not to be a bed brag or anything but… you just had sex with the guy who’s assisting on Dr Tanaka’s next surgery.”
Suki let out a breathy chuckle.
“You are a brag.” Then she turned so that she faced him from the other pillow, also propping up her head on her hand, “Well done, though.” Her voice went softer, and her face took on a disarming sincerity.
Bryce was taken aback by her genuine praise, but he couldn’t let her know that.
“Thanks,” he said, eyebrows furrowed with humour, “I’m actually really excited.”
“What’s the surgery?”
“Only an appendectomy.”
“Only?”
He laughed, sinking his head back down onto the pillow. His hands cradled under his head.
“Yeah, it’s not particularly advanced. Still, gonna be fun.”
They were talking as though they were friends, which wasn’t really a label Suki had felt appropriate to ascribe to their relationship.
“When is it?” Suki, stop asking him questions! Then again, at this point it would be awkward if she just up and left.
“Next week. Pencil it in your calendar because you are going to have the best sex of your life that night.”
Suki let out a cackle. “Is there anything you don’t think you’re amazing at?”
Again, Bryce propped himself back up so that he was facing Suki. There seemed to be a restlessness to all this changing of positions.
“I’m not lying though, am I?” As he said this his voice was low and sultry, deep mahogany eyes watching her from under his lashes. Those were sticking together slightly from the sweat, Suki was close enough to notice. He brought one of his hands down under the covers and rested it on Suki’s hip.
“If you’re trying to get me to boost your ego - It won’t work.”
He smirked, knowing that the answer he’d been looking for was hidden in those words. And she did agree. He was amazing in bed.
Bryce drew barely-there circles on Suki’s hip, before pulling it towards him. Then he leaned his face right in, so that it was inches from hers.
“I don’t need you to say it because I can see it in your eyes,” and yes, he was looking straight into her eyes. But she felt sort of drunkenly infatuated with it, her desire growing by the second. “and feel it on your skin.” His grip on her hip tightened, the sweat condensing between their skin-on-skin contact. Now they were close enough that they could do it all over again if they wanted to.
Bryce trailed his finger up from Suki’s hip slowly, tickling her skin and giving her goosebumps, over the dip of her waist, the rise of her ribcage; all the way up to her neck. He splayed his hand out flat over the front of her neck, and tightened his grip. Just enough that she could feel it. Face still inches from her, he said:
“I just have an effect on people.”
And then in one swift movement, and a melodious laugh, Bryce pulled his hand and his body from hers, falling once again on his back at the pillow beside Suki’s.
Fucking hell. Talk about flustered! Suki tried to pretend she was unaffected, also flopping back onto her pillow. He did have an effect on people and he knew full well by now that Suki, despite her best efforts to conceal the fact, was not someone who handled being flustered well. And let’s be honest, she wouldn’t keep sleeping with the guy if it wasn’t something she was enjoying.
Despite that, though, there she was, lying in Bryce’s bed post-lay and completely naked, and not worrying about it. Not in the way she’d worried their first morning, shuffling to cover herself with her bedsheets. She supposed by now he knew her body inside and out, and that emotional intimacy she’d been scared of had warped into a purely carnal intimacy. Plus, the fact that she hadn’t just woken up next to him, slightly hungover, probably helped.
“Yeah, you keep telling yourself that,” she practically choked out, as though his hand was still splayed over her neck.
He could tell he’d affected her, and that classic smirk spread wider over his face as he stared at his bedroom ceiling.
I truly like this MC. Like, I'm legitimately affectionate to them (well, to him in my case because I play as a m!MC)
But, for real. MC is a cinnamon roll.
open heart’s mc is so inherently good. foolish maybe, but good…their friends were like “you’re being sabotaged” and they are like “yeah but mrs martinez is more important” and god? theyre so good it hurts
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Casey Valentine (F!MC)
Word Count: 2.6K
Contains: Smut, tiny bit of fluff
Rating: 18+ (NSFW)
Tagging: @mckenzie-bae @deansmyapplepie
A/N: I swear to God that I had this done and ready to post before todays chapter. I think it’ s just a little unlucky for me that what happened with Ethan, happened on the same day I planned to post this... anyhow, do enjoy this one!
=========
“Valentine, get those samples and get them to the lab right away, I’ll page you if I need anything else today. Team dismissed.” Ethan said in his usual matter of fact tone as he took a seat behind his desk and shuffling a stack of papers. “Yes, Dr. Ramsey.” The young blonde doctor replied, gathering her things and following June and Baz out of the office. She waved goodbye to her colleagues and headed towards the patients room, but stopped dead in her tracks as her pager buzzed in her pocket. “A code blue for Mr. Fitzgerald?!” she exclaimed and ran to the elevator, jamming the button for the floor she needed. Not even giving the door time to open by themselves when the elevator stopped at her floor she burst out and down the hall towards Mr. Fitzgerald’s room. She entered to chaos. “He gone into anaphylaxis Dr. Valentine and the code team isn’t responding.” A panicked nurse said hurriedly, Casey turning and retrieving the defibrillator cart and wheeling it into the room. As she worked quickly and efficiently expose the patient’s chest, she had flashbacks to her first patient Annie. The nurse set the charge for the paddles, then Casey grabbed them knowing there wasn’t a second to lose. After successfully saving Mr. Fitzgerald, Casey trudged to the locker room to put her bag away then carried on with her patients, completely forgetting about the task Ethan had given her. She was at lunch with Bryce and Elijah when her pager beeped on her tray, her face immediately falling as she read the message.
“I... I’ve got to go guys. I... Bye!”
Was all she said as she stuff the last of her bread in her mouth, grabbing her pager and water bottle and sprinting off towards the stairs. Normally she would take the elevator when she received a page from Ethan, but he sounded mad in this one, so she wanted to buy herself a little more time. Also this way she could finish her mouthful of bread and not anger him anymore. As she approached the diagnostics office, she gulped audibly as she noticed the blinds closed. Stopping at the nurses station on the floor she leant over to the nurse who was there. “Um.. How- How mad is Dr. Ramsey with me?” she asked timidly. The nurse looked to her with a small smile. “He’s pissed. But don’t worry. We’ve got our jobs to keep us busy, and we also plan to scurry the second that door shuts behind you..” the nurse replied. Casey gulped again and approached the doors, entering into the lion’s den. She expected to see an angry, fast-typing Ethan behind his desk, so was confused when he wasn’t there. Then, he whole body froze as she her the lock of the door click shut behind her. Oh no. This was bound to be bad.
“E-Ethan. Please... tell me that’s you. And not- not some st-stranger.”
But she got no response, just a familiar breath that tickled her neck and sent a shiver down her spine. “I’m not happy with you.” A low and quiet voice spoke into her ear. She bit her lip, he sounded dangerously hot when he spoke to her like this, her already forest green orbs darkened with desire.
“I- I’m sorry Dr. R-”
“Ah! No talking. I want you to listen to me.”
She swallowed hard. She knew he was confident, it was one of the things she adored about him, but he wasn’t usually this commanding at work. Which lead to her having a quickened pulse, the only time he turned like this was when they were alone in his apartment and about to move things o his bedroom. She took a seat as he walked around his desk, doing the same. She looked at him, a mix of emotions taking over the mind. She felt scared, anxious and now... a little turned on. Casey didn’t dare speak, she just met his hard stare waiting for him to speak. The silence stretched on for what felt like hour before Ethan finally took a breath to speak.
“I don’t take being ignored lightly Dr. Valentine. Care to explain yourself? Why I had to do the job you were asked to do?”
“I... uh.”
“Well?” he pushed, making the younger doctor sitting across from him even more nervous than she already was.
“I g-got a c-c-code bl-blue.” She stutter, palms sweating with a mixture of nerves and anticipation.
Ethan raised a brow at her, skeptical of her answer. “For whom? Why couldn’t the code team answer it?”
“M-Mr. Fitz-Fitzgerald. And I- I don’t know. S-Sarah said they were-weren’t answer-ring.”
His annoyance with Casey turned to curiosity for a moment as he cocked his head to the side. “Why are you scared?”
“Sc-scared? Who said I was-”
“You’re stuttering a lot. Like a child in trouble for doing something wrong.”
“I.... I’m not. I just....”
“Rookie...” Ethan said leaning forward, his tone softening for a moment as he took her hand and she flinched. “Are you scared of me?”
“What?! No! Of course I’m not! I’m just... I made you angry. You should be correcting me and then telling me to leave. Why are you letting me explain myself?”
“Because that’s what happens. You clearly made a mistake. Besides, I was only angry at you for a moment.”
“Oh.”
Casey finally looked back up into his eyes and she saw it. Her desire for him matched in his darkened blue eyes as he licked his bottom lip, eyes slowly moving to look at her lips. They leaned into each other over the desk, Ethan stopping inches from Casey’s mouth.
“This is why I shut the blinds and locked the door.” He said smugly before bringing they lips together softly. “We wouldn’t want anyone to see me do this would we?” he whispered, breaking the kiss and swiping all his papers to the floor, turning Casey’s back to him and gently pulling her across the desk, spinning her around to face him, standing between her legs.
“Ethan... we’re at work. Are you crazy?” Casey asked
“Maybe. Maybe not. Or maybe, you’re the crazy one for trying to stop this.” He husked, sliding his hand up Casey’s thigh and under her skirt. Her eyes closed slowly, and mouth partly slightly as she let out a hitched breath.
“You infuriate me Dr. Valentine.” Ethan said into her ear lowly, a small growl at the back of his throat as he squeezed her hip
“Ethan..” she said breathlessly.
“Shhhhhh.”
Ethan brought his lips to the crook of her neck, kissing sweetly at first and Casey tangled her fingers in his dark auburn locks. His kisses grew hungrier as he travelled up to her earlobe, gently sucking and nibbling at the skin. The contact was leaving Casey breathless, and she inhaled sharply as he nibbled her earlobe before pulling back, slowly opening his eyes and looking at her with nothing but desire. He moved his hand to his top draw, gaze never leaving the flustered sight in front of him, and a small smirk grew on his face his hand came into contact with the cool metal of the object he’d placed in there just before he summoned Casey to the office. Casey gulped as she hear the jingle of the metal as he moved it from the draw to the desk next to her.
“Y-you brought them to- to w-work” she asked. But was met with his silent mirk as he slid her white coat from her shoulders before turning his attention back to assaulting her lips with his own and discarding his own white coat on the floor, loosening his tie and unbuttoning his shirt. The kiss was fervent, full of lust and need. Yet, Casey caught the undertone of love and care it also carried. Ethan pulled her to her feet, breaking the kiss.
“Strip for me.”
“Yes, Dr. Ramsey.”
“You’re playing a dangerous game by calling me that in such a situation, Valentine.”
“That’s a bold statement considering our current situation.”
Ethan smirked at her spoken remark hearing the lust and want laced in her voice. The air crackled with a passionate electricity as they’re lips assaulted each other’s and clothes were thrown carelessly around the office. Ethan stopped mid assault on Casey’s chest, looking up at her with a devilish smirk that caused her to bite her lip and watch with anticipation as Ethan stood up, his now fully hardened length straining against his boxers. Casey bit her lip, enjoying the sight in front of her, eyes widening as she hear Ethan pick up the cuffs before turning back to her with a smirk.
“W-What are you going to- to do?”
“Hands above your head princess. I intend on taking you on a wild ride.”
Gulping Casey done as asked, watch as Ethan hovered over her.
“I’m very disappointed in you.” He husked in her ear, sending electric shivers down her spine. “Not only did you not do the task I asked, you disobeyed my request. This..” He said, snapping the waistband of her panties against her hip sending a jolt of pleasurable pain through her. “... is not the set I asked you to wear. Is it?” He challenged as he brought his gaze to her eyes, soft but calloused hand grazing her side before circling her aroused and sensitive bud with his index finger before toying with it between finger and thumb. Casey gasped at the sudden contact, whimpering when she felt the warm roughness of his tongue glide over the other.
“Ethan..” she breathed out, pulling on her restraint. “I want to... touch... you.”
“You should have thought about that before disobeying me.” He teased, leaving a trail of hot, wet kiss down the body before turning his attention to her inner thighs. Above her head, Casey wrapped her fists around the metal leg of the desk, her breath now rapid with anticipation as Ethan kisses everywhere except where she needed him the most.
“P-Please...”
Ethan smirked against her skin, he liked having her like this. Begging for mercy during punishment after disobeying him. It was one of his biggest turn-ons, though he would never let anyone in on that secret. It was purely his own. Hooking his thumbs under the sides of her panties he pulled them down as he kissed back down her inner thighs, leaving small purple bruises behind.
“Ah, Ethan. Please..” she whimpered as the cool air hit the dampened area between her legs. Upon seeing the sight, Ethan licked his lips hungrily, reaching out and running a single digit between her slick folds.
“Mmmm. Look how wet you are...”
“It’s.. all.. for you.”
“I should hope so.” He smirked as he positioned himself between her legs, kissing up her inner thighs again, slowly before teasingly swiping his tongue over her most sensitive area. The place she needed him most.
“Fuck.” whimpered Casey, her hips bucking up to meet his mouth. He hummed softly as he devoured her, pinning her down with his left arm as he brought the middle finger of his right hand to her entrance, circling it teasingly as she writhed and whimpered above him.
“mmm, fuck. ... eth-ethaaaahhh.” She hissed as he pushed his finger in slowly, pumping it and building up a quickened pace, swirling his tongue around her arousal. Ethan worked his tongue around her clit until he knew she was about to climax and then stopped pulling away. Casey whimpered as she slowly opened her eyes, finding Ethan looking down at her with a triumphant smirk, before kissing her passionately. She retuned the kiss with fervor, Ethan moaning as his still clothed erection brushed lightly against her hipbone. He lightly bit Casey’s bottom lip as he pulled away breathing in deeply, standing to remove his underwear and gasping when his erection sprung free. Casey breath hitched as she stared at the sight before her.
“Like what you see baby?” Ethan asked with a smirk as he lowered himself back to the ground.
“C-can you let me.. out?” Casey asked pulling on the cuffs. Ethan flitted his gaze up to the cuffs wrapped round the leg of his desk, then beck to Casey as he shook his head, spinning round and positioning himself over her mouth. She puckered her lips, lifting her head slightly and kissed the tip, making Ethan shudder with pleasure.
“Ohhhhh.”
“Did you like that..... Detective?”
Ethan close his eyes, breathing out heavily as he silently cursed to himself. “Open your mouth.” He demanded
“Why?”
“I want you to show me what that pretty little mouth can do with no hands.”
Casey smirked, slowly opening her mouth and lifting her head, taking him in inch by inch until she starts to gently bob her head. Ethan groaning pleasurably above her, keeping his plank position proved a challenge as Casey started deepthroating him.
“Ah, shit... Casey.” Weakness overtook his muscles as she hummed each time he hit the back of her throat. “Ah, fuck. Stop! Stop.” He said breathlessly, pulling out of her mouth and spinning to undo the handcuffs. He pulled Casey to her feet, kissing her with urgency, grabbing he butt in his hands as she jumped wrapping her legs around his waist. He carried he to his desk and laid her down. Casey gasped as the cold mahogany came into contact with her back, her eyes widening as she spot the whip hanging out of Ethan’s open bag by his chair.
“Ethan? Why do you h-have a whi-whip?”
“Precautionary. Disobey me again, and well.. .I think you know where this will go.” He growled in her ear lowly.
Many minutes which felt like hours later, Ethan surrendered begging for Casey.
“Fuck. Spread your legs for me. Now.” He urged as he blindly reached for his pocket, pulling out a condom. Casey waited in anticipation, her back flat on his desk as she watch him slide the protection over his rock solid manhood. Without warning, after positioning himself, Ethan slammed into Casey making her cry out in pleasure.
“Shhhh.” He warned bringing a finger to her lips, which she took between her teeth as she nodded. Slowly, Ethan started to thrust, and Casey whimpered quietly as he picked up his pace.
“fuck. me. harder.” She whispered in his ear, gasping as he almost immediately fulfilled her request cause her stomach to form that familiar knotting sensation as she felt Ethan start to twitch inside of her. Their breath was ragged as the whispered each other name in ecstasy as they climaxed together.
A few moments passed in a blissful silence as the two caught their breath, before Casey sat up looking Ethan in the eyes. The were now as clear as the Caribbean Sea again and he smiled, forehead still clammy with sweat.
“I didn’t think you had it in you.” Casey teased as she looked around the room, then got up to start collecting her clothes.
“What?” he asked as he removed the condom, putting in a small black bag and the discarding it in the trash.
“Hooking up with me at work. Let alone in this office.”
Ethan chuckled as he began getting re-dressed too. He had just draped his tie round his neck when there was a knock at the door.
“Hello? Ethan? It’s Baz!”
Casey’s eyes widened as she pointed to their heads. Both of them still had sex hair. Ethan shrugged.
“He’s doesn’t know anyone’s here.” He whispered in Casey’s ear. “Now, care to help me with my tie?” he said, cocking an eyebrow at her.
