“The great lords would have given us another two years of war,” the fool declares in his Testimony, “it was the women who made the peace. Black Aly, the Maiden of the Vale, the Three Widows, the Dragon Twins, ’twas them who brought the bloodshed to an end, and not with swords or poison, but with ravens, words, and kisses.”

I was rewatching 1.02 (for fic purposes) and noticed an interesting little detail: the first Kingsguard candidate introduced to Rhaenyra is Ser Desmond Caron, son of Royce Caron. In the books, Royce Caron is the father of Elenda, wife of Borros Baratheon and mother of the Four Storms. Desmond is their brother-in-law and uncle, respectively.
In that scene, Otto advises Rhaenyra to chose a knight who can bring the crown a political alliance (though not specifically Desmond), but Rhaenyra rejects his advice and chooses Criston instead. Rhaenyra rejecting Desmond was foreshadowing that she would lose the alliance with the Baratheons. I can't believe I didn't put that together earlier!

Elenda Baratheon
Elenda Baratheon, née Elenda Caron, was the Lady of Storm's End through her marriage to Lord Borros Baratheon during the Dance of the Dragons. During the reign of King Aegon III Targaryen, she ruled Storm's End as regent.
Following her husband's death, Elenda ruled as regent for her newborn son. Seeing her men broken by battle, she agreed to terms of peace. Still weak from childbirth, she gave three of her daughters as hostages to the crown. They were accompanied by Ser Willis Fell and Princess Jaehaera Targaryen, who had been given refuge at Storm's End during the war.
In 132 AC, Lady Elenda married again, to Ser Steffon Connington, second son of the Lord of Griffin's Roost and a man twenty years her junior. With Royce but an infant, Elenda felt that she needed a strong man's hand to keep the peace against the increasingly frequent raids from Dornishmen. However, in 133 AC Steffon was slain by Wyland Wyl in the Dornish Marches, and Elenda was widowed once more.
After the death of Queen Jaehaera in 133 AC, Elenda wrote to the Crown, offering her daughters Cassandra and Ellyn as potential brides for King Aegon III. Three years later, Cassandra was tried for attempting to poison the king and his new queen, Daenaera Velaryon. Elenda sent three stormlords to speak for Storm's End, being too ill to attend herself. They arranged for Cassandra to marry Ser Walter Brownhill, a widower, as Elenda correctly believed that caring for Walter's thirteen children would cease Cassandra's scheming and plotting.
...
Elenda may have hesitated to take action, but she was still respected as the Lady of Storm's End

Curiosity had brought her down when she'd seen the dragon flying over Storm's End. Shireen knew she was not meant to wander around when there were strangers visiting, but she could only get a good view of the dragon from one of the balconies opposite her rooms. Borros would not be thrilled that she was out, but she hoped Elenda would not tell him she'd been wandering.
"I just wanted to see Vhagar," she says. "She's one of the largest dragons of House Targaryen." She can't hide the excitement in her voice. She glances out of the window again, then back to Elenda. The woman brushes some of her hair back from her temple, and her shoulders slump a little. "I won't let anyone see me. Just a few more minutes?"

Why isn't it more talked about how there's canonically an archmaester who wrote a very, very big Book about women ruling in the aftermath of the Dance. It's a detail that rules so much. A guy literally talking about hundreds of widows ruling parts of Westeros after the war. Why not much talk about Johanna Lannister, born Westerling, Sharis Footly, Lady Tyrell, Samantha Tarly, Elenda Baratheon born Caron, Sabitha Frey, Alys Rivers in her own way...a tide of ruling girls because a bunch of guys weren't cool with a girl ruling & got themselves killed trying to stop it. That's some massive irony.

i just found your posts and i love youuu! can you write about the costumes of the Baratheon sisters, called Four Storms and their mother plz?
Thinking ab characters mentioned once in the fake history book>>>
Also I’ll do faceclaims/fancasts again cause those were fun
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elenda Caron was smarter than any man in or after the dance. An intelligent and reasonable woman, she was thrust into the role of lady and then regent of storms end, and had to dress seriously to be taken seriously. High necked gowns, natural waists and shapes, puffy/long sleeves, gilded and shining patterns or embroidery that showed off her rank but not overly gaudy. She’s a woman of moderation. Elenda knows how to emulate power and class and she knows how to do it all reasonably. Girlboss I love her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cassandra was the most ambitious of the sisters, scheming to try and become queen for years. She adored rich velvets and royal colors. Especially Targaryen colors. Her gowns were always full and flowing but with a tight bodice, and every inch was oft covered in fancy lace, patterns, and embroidery. She wasn’t shy or modest about the clothes she wore. And jewelry was her favorite of all. She even had Borros have a special crown made just for her, formed from delicate gold and pearls, which she frequently wore to court. Modesty? Doesn’t know her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maris was the cleverest and wittiest, but said to be the “least comely” of them. She thought frivolous, extravagant clothing did not suit her, so she preferred to wear plain shift gowns. Long, flat skirts, simple patterns, and natural shapes, waists, and sleeves. Her tendency for simplicity was half her no nonsense and skeptic personality and half her internalized insecurity. After the war, when she spurned marriage for the silent sisters, probably for some peace of mind for once, she wore their typical rough grey homespun. No longer having to worry about her appearance was a relief
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poor Ellyn is the overlooked sister. One of the only mentions of her is at the maidens day ball, when one of her sisters spread a rumor that she asked Aegon a lewd question. She was probably chasing attention and approval, deciding to emulate the elder Cassandra. She wore pretty velvets too, but in simple shapes and lighter colors due to her young age. She begged her mother to be allowed to wear her hair up like the grown women did, so that she might be noticed for once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Young Floris was the prettiest, even if she was rather frivolous. She didn’t like the shapeless clothing of the stormlands, nor did she enjoy the stiffness of fashion in kings landing. She enjoyed silks, satins, and gauzes, enjoying the way it followed around and clung to her perfectly. Borros was wrapped around her finger, ordering whatever Myrish laced or Lyseni silks she wanted, making her the standout at court and the envy of all the young women (though she may have been compared to a Essosi concubine more than once). She never grew out of this airy attitude, as ofc she died from Child by Old Man disease when she was like 16

Ladies of "Loyalty" (Ellyn Baratheon)
I am making profiles for every important woman in my Aemond x Reader series "Loyalty".
Tumblr media
Name: Ellyn Baratheon
House: Baratheon
Loyalty during "The Dance": Green
Date of Birth: 111 AC
Family:
Borro Baratheon (father)
Elenda Caron (mother)
Cassandra Baratheon (sister)
Maris Baratheon (sister)
Floris Baratheon (sister)
Royce Baratheon (brother)
Aemond Targaryen (husband)
Ellyn Baratheon was betrothed to Aemond Targaryen at the very beginning of The Dance in 132 AC. Immediately she was taken straight to Kings Landing to marry Prince Aemond. She was escorted by Prince Aemond on dragon back as Lord Borros was eager for his daughter to be married. They were married by the High Septon in the Red Keep. She started a rivalry with Y/n Tyrell as she was assumed there was an affair between the two. Ellyn attempted to accuse Y/n of being her husbands mistress but failed. This rivalry was shortly put on halt when Y/n went of to marry Jason Lannister.
Tumblr media
She resided in Kings Landing for the better part of a year. During that time she tried for a child with her husband but was unsuccessful. When Aemond took Harrenhal Ellyn went with him. There he met Alys Rivers. Ellyn also believed he was having an affair with her. Things got worse when Y/n Tyrell fled to Harrenhal, with child.
Tumblr media
At this point Ellyn became ill with an unknown disease. She started to waste away. Her older sister Maris eventually came to be with her. Ellyn died in 133 AC, a year and a half after her marriage to Prince Aemond. She was buried in Harrenhal, her family never asked for the remains to be returned.

Lord Borros was confident of victory, for his scouts had told him that the rivermen were led by boys and women.
Fire and Blood (George R. R. Martin)
Fuck you, Borros!
- with hate, boys and women.
Borros Baratheon perished fighting. Unhorsed when his destrier was felled by arrows from Black Aly and her bowmen ... By the time Kermit Tully came upon him, Lord Borros was dead upon his feet ... Lord Baratheon answered with a curse, saying, “I’d sooner dance in hell than wear your chains.” Then he charged… straight into the spiked iron ball at the end of Lord Kermit’s morningstar, which took him full in the face ... As the gods would have it, seven days later at Storm’s End his lady wife gave birth to the son and heir that Lord Borros had so long desired. His lordship had left instructions that the babe was to be named Aegon if a boy, in honor of the king. But upon learning of her lord’s death in battle, Lady Baratheon named the child Royce, after her own father.

Actually! That was Cassandra and she was married to Walter Brownhill, who had 16 living children. Floris was the one married off to Thaddeus.
Borros seemed to give more of a shit about his daughters - he was negotiating with Aegon for Cassandra to marry him and be queen, and Floris to marry Larys, who was on the King's Council - which, YES we all hate Larys, he's fucking creepy, but on paper it is a good marriage, because he was the Lord of Harrenhal and it would have made Floris the Lady of Harrenhal. Once Borros was dead, Elenda seemed so done with their daughters. Such a shame!
Okay, but I did not become president of the Thaddeus Rowan hate club to be disrespected like this. The man had seven sons from his previous marriages and then went on to impregnate a fifteen year old and she DIED in childbirth. I am absolutely calling that problematic and hating on it

House Baratheon Aesthetic
During the Dance of the Dragons, House Baratheon was led by Lord Boros Baratheon. He was married to Lady Elenda Caron and from her had four daughters, known as the Four Storms: Cassandra, Maris, Ellyn, and Floris. While the battle of succession for the Iron Throne raged on Lord Boros himself was in a crisis as he lacked a male heir.

Brinaera Baratheon Origin Story
tag list 🏷️ : @eiralune @rozendiors @mini-kunoichi @noeverse @flippydippydoo @thought--bubble

Tumblr media
The tale of the Princess of Storm’s End is not one of joy or lavish living, but one of a doomed narrative from conception. Conceived from a night of debauchery between the Lord Baratheon and his Lady wife Elenda Caron’s ill sister, Delora Caron. But the mere thought of having a bastard child sully his reputation as Lord of the Stormlands was palpable. So when the child was born, she and her mother were sent away, as it did not matter where they ended up, as long as they were out of the sights of Lord Baratheon. A mere newborn babe, her ailing mother, left to wander aimlessly wherever Lady Delora’s feet would take her.
It seemed like an eternity that Delora wandered and traveled, with Brinaera still swaddled in her arms, her eyes never leaving her babe. It was as if she was the most delicate and prized gem in existence to Delora and she swore to the Gods that she would do anything to ensure Brinaera’s safety. As Delora took in her surroundings, she had come to realize she had made it to King’s Landing. She looked surprised, incredulous even, to the fact that she had managed to walk such a distance. She hadn’t a clue how long she had been walking, losing track of the days as they all blurred together for her.
She continued to grip her cloak as she held Brinaera close to her bosom, walking and wandering aimlessly in search of the direction to the Red Keep. Delora knew one single person that she may be able to rely on, and that was the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Lady Alicent Hightower. As Delora wandered to the gates of the Red Keep, a Kingsguard halted her, suspicious of her motivations.
“You there, halt! What are you doing, showing up to the Red Keep unannounced?”
“Please, sir, I must speak with the Queen. It is urgent, I beg of you.”
The Kingsguard was about to scoff in dismissal, but he saw the small babe snuggled up to Delora’s bosom, his whole demeanor changed. As he was about to speak, the voice of Alicent caught the attention of both him and Delora.
“You, you are relieved of your duties for now. Retire for the time being, give me and this woman a moment alone.”
“Yes, my Lady.”
With a bow, the Kingsguard made his way a distance from the gate. Alicent gently brought Delora to the side and looked at her rather perturbed at the sudden appearance. Alicent noticed the babe that was swaddled up and looked even more confused.
“Delora, by the Seven, what is the meaning of this?”
“Please Alicent, you are my only hope, I had no one to turn to.”
“What of Borros and Elenda? Surely you could have stayed in Storm’s End.”
As Delora goes to speak, a horrible cough escapes her, one sounding like the very trumpet of death nearing. She covered her mouth with her free hand and when she pulled it back, she weakly grimaced at the sight of blood on her palm. Alicent flinched slightly, going wide eyed at the sight, not having a single clue what to do.
“Alicent, Borros, he…. He had his way with me whilst my sister was poorly, needing to satiate his lust. I did not want it, but who was I to turn down a Lord and say no? I didn’t bleed for nearly three moons and I knew something wasn’t right. I was with child. Borros knew, Elenda found out, but as soon as I had given birth, both of us were banished.”
Alicent’s facial expression was a myriad of different emotions: confusion, anger, sympathy and a tinge of grief. How was she supposed to act after receiving such a large amount of information in the span of just a few moments?
“So you come to me for what purpose? To seek refuge? Delora, I may be Queen, but I couldn’t make this decision alone.”
“I’m dying, Alicent. As the pregnancy progressed, so did this…. This ailment. I will be lucky to survive by dawn. If not the both of us, then at least take Brinaera. Please…. I ask you this one single thing. She has done no wrong, I beg of you Alicent.”
Alicent grew even more shocked and bewildered as Delora weakly and shakily handed Brinaera to her, Alicent immediately holding the babe in the correct manner. Delora let out another cough, one sounding sharper and more painful than the last, her legs giving out underneath her. Delora collapsed to the ground on hands and knees, her skin abrasively scraped by the stone and dirt, blood being coughed up from her lips. Her fingers shakily reached around her neck to remove the necklace around it, the pendant having a single nightingale on it. She looked up at Alicent, giving her a weak and solemn smile, handing the necklace to her.
“Please…. Give this to her, remind her of her blood, tell her she is always loved. Regale to her the Caron words…. No Song so Sweet.”
Alicent, with a slightly shaky hand, grabbed the necklace from Delora’s hand, examining the pendant. She swallowed as her eyes became slightly watery.
“I will see to it that your daughter is taken care of here in the Keep, Delora. You have my word.”
Delora smiled weakly and let out a small strained laugh as tears ran down her face, her body starting to give way and surrender to the ailment. She remained on the ground until her chest stopped rising for air, a single death rattle escaping her as the light left her eyes. Alicent closed her eyes for a moment in a vain attempt to not look at what once was an acquaintance, now dead in front of her, a single tear rolling down her face as she muttered a silent prayer to herself. She looked down at the infant in her arms, cooing and looking up at Alicent, not having a single clue that her mother was now dead, feet away from her. She looked at the necklace once more, staring at the nightingale on the pendant before letting out a sigh, tucking the necklace into Brinaera’s swaddle rags.
Alicent walked past the Kingsguard on her way into the Red Keep, holding Brinaera close to her bosom. The Kingsguard looked confused and was about to speak, but Alicent cut him off, speaking rather bluntly.
“The woman is dead. See to it that she is buried properly away from the Keep.”
“Yes, my Queen.”
The Kingsguard immediately left to tend to the body of Delora, leaving through the main gates of the Keep. Alicent walked through the halls and corridors of the Keep, making her way into the Throne Room where Viserys sat on the Iron Throne.
“Viserys, we must discuss something in private. It is of grave urgence.”
Viserys looked confused and raised a curious brow as he looked at Alicent, and that confusion grew as he saw the infant swaddled up against her bosom. He motioned for Alicent to come forward and that was precisely what she did. She stood in front of him at the top step of the Iron Throne.
“Alicent, what in the Hells is going on and why is there a babe in your arms? What is the meaning of this?”
“I was visited by Delora.”
Viserys looked even more confused, wondering just what in the Seven Hells was going on.
“Delora…. Lord Borros’ Lady Wife’s sister? What was it she could have needed from you?”
Alicent let out an exasperated sigh before looking at Viserys, gently rocking and bouncing Brinaera in her arms.
“She had confided in me that whilst her sister Elenda was poorly, Lord Borros, he… had his way with her. Three moons had passed and she had yet received her blood. She was with Borros’ child. He had known immediately, Elenda had found out, and as soon as Delora gave birth, she was forced to leave Storm’s End with the child. But as the pregnancy progressed, so did this ailment she had. She traveled all the way here on foot… she trusted in me to look after her daughter. It was her single wish before she… had perished at my feet. A Kingsguard is seeing to it that she be buried outside the Keep.”
Viserys was greatly baffled by this information, having to rub his temples in contemplation on what to do.
“And you agreed…. ?”
“What was I to do, Viserys? What would you have me do, turn away a dying woman and her babe?”
“No, dear wife, that is not what I was insinuating. I am just… trying to grasp this situation.”
Viserys paused for a moment before getting up from the Iron Throne, walking up to Alicent with Brinaera in her arms, getting a better look at the babe. He then spoke once more.
“What is the child’s name? Did Delora tell you?”
“Yes…. Her name is Brinaera.”
Viserys just smiled to himself and looked at Brinaera swaddled in Alicent’s arm, placing a gentle hand to the top of the babe’s head. Alicent just stared at the scene in front of her before speaking once more.
“She is Baratheon by blood. But Lord Borros would never admit to it. She will never be a Baratheon by name. He wouldn’t ever legitimize her.”
“I am the King of the Seven Kingdoms and he is a mere Lord of the Stormlands. If I wish to legitimize her, then I will see it done.”
“Viserys, to legitimize a bastard, another Lord’s bastard mind you, would cause a great scandal amongst the Seven Kingdoms. Do you not think of the repercussions this could cause?”
Viserys turned to look at Alicent, his gaze a bit upset but understanding, knowing Alicent had a point. He let out a sigh, a gentle hand still on the top of Brinaera’s head.
“I suppose you are right, dear wife. But she shall remain with us, she will be a ward. She will be treated no differently than our own children. Though if I choose to legitimize her once she is older, I will see that it does happen.”
Alicent knew she wanted to press further, but remained silent and let it be. She just looked down at Brinaera swaddled in her arms, slightly bouncing and rocking her in her arms. She was a beautiful child and she knew out of good faith she couldn’t rid herself of the child, so she nodded her head at Viserys’ words, as if silently agreeing to the terms.
What a strange turn of events for the most important family in all of the Seven Kingdoms to now have an orphan bastard in their care as a ward. It was as if the Gods above had a unique and twisted sense of humor, but here Alicent was, stuck with a child out of obligation and a promise made to Delora. Perhaps this was a chance, an opportunity waiting to bloom at the right time later down the road….
And with that, details the origins of the scorned bastard daughter, the wronged Princess of Storm’s End…the girl that was and is Brinaera Baratheon.

archmaester glyden on the 'eldest storm'
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cassandra Baratheon was born in the one-hundred and eleventh year after Aegon's Conquest to Borros Baratheon and his lady wife, Elenda Caron. She was the first of no less than four daughters the couple would produce, aptly dubbed 'the four storms' by contemporaries for the famous wit, beauty, and sharp tongues possessed by the girls. The reputation for volatility that was associated with them can be attributed primarily to the second of the storms, Maria Baratheon, who famously requested of a suitor "both his [testicles] as a courting gift, that it might spare [her] the disgrace of baring his children."
Contemporary accounts inform us that Cassandra was of a more mild and discerning temperament than her younger sister, though no less sharp of tongue when it suited her. It was the character of the eldest girl to observe rather than to act immediately, and when her sisters required insight or a second opinion of the intentions of a suitor, she was prepared with an honest - though perhaps, sometimes harsh - report of him.
When King Viserys I announced the betrothal of his younger daughter, Helaena, to his eldest son, Aegon, Lady Cassandra was selected from a list of noble daughters as a suitable lady-in-waiting to her grace, the Princess. As she was yet below the age of majority, her guardianship was given to the Queen. Faced with a new court and many new persons, Cassandra's quiet demeanor was quickly mistaken for demureness, and thus she was (incorrectly) dubbed 'Doe-Eyed Cass.'
