♦ WINTER OF THE WIDOWS: So many lords, both great and small, had perished during the Dance of the Dragons that the Citadel rightly names this time the Winter of the Widows. Never before or since in the history of the Seven Kingdoms have so many women wielded so much power, ruling in the place of their slain husbands, brothers, and fathers, for sons in swaddling clothes or still on the teat. Many of their stories have been collected in Archmaester Abelon’s mammoth When Women Ruled: Ladies of the Aftermath.

I find it amusing how the Hightowers spent years spreading rumors about Rhaenyra’s boys with Laenor, and a generation later, Lyonel Hightower and his “wife” (ex-stepmother) Samantha Tarly have six children who are the talk of the Realm (are they bastards or aren’t they?)
Karma’s a bitch.
And GRRM knows how to deliver it ;)

SAMANTHA HIGHTOWER (BORN TARLY), LADY OF OLDTOWN
Lady Samantha Tarly, the widow of Lord Ormund Hightower, eventually remarried to his heir and her stepson, Lyonel Hightower, who only reached the age of adulthood at sixteen just as the war ended. While not technically his regent, she was so politically influential that she was considered the functional co-ruler of Oldtown. When Lord Lyonel announced his intention to marry his father's widow, the reigning High Septon forbade the union as a form of incest. However, Lyonel kept Samantha as his paramour for thirteen years and fathered six children on her. Relations between the Hightowers and the Faith of the Seven soured when the High Septon commanded Lady Sam to remove herself from her step-son's bed and take vows as a silent sister as penance. When she refused, the High Septon condemned her as a shameless fornicator and forbade her to set foot in the Starry Sept until she repented. Instead, Samantha mounted a warhorse and burst into the Starry Sept as the High Septon was leading prayer, claiming that while she could not set foot there, the High Septon had said nothing of her horse's hooves, and commanded her men to close the doors, as the sept should be closed to all if it was closed for her. Though the High Septon grew furious, he had no choice but to relent. Lady Sam protected Lotho Rogare after the fall of House Rogare. The Hightowers remained extremely wealthy as they had not entrusted any of their gold to Lys before the Rogare Bank ran dry. Lotho helped Lady Sam found the prosperous Bank of Oldtown.

His lord father’s young widow had other notions, however. Lady Samantha was the daughter of Lord Donald Tarly of Horn Hill and Lady Jeyne Rowan of Goldengrove, both houses that had taken up arms for the queen during the Dance. Fierce and fiery and beautiful, this strong-willed girl had no intention of giving up her place as the Lady of Oldtown and mistress of the Hightower.

“The great lords would have given us another two years of war,” the fool declares in his Testimony, “it was the women who made the peace. Black Aly, the Maiden of the Vale, the Three Widows, the Dragon Twins, ’twas them who brought the bloodshed to an end, and not with swords or poison, but with ravens, words, and kisses.”

Lacie Warmen and some lore
Tumblr media
Lacie Warmen is the eldest in a set of quadruplets, she has three brothers; Erron, Devlon, and Gaius. Their father is the lord of a smaller village that sits on the border of The Reach and The Westerlands and their mother is the estranged (*cough* disowned *cough*) cousin of Hobert and Otto Hightower. The Warmens recently got very lucky quite literally striking gold on their land. While a bit of gold won't usually buy you the world, it will if you know how to use it.
When Lord Ormund Hightower heard of his dear cousin's good fortune he of course reached out in an attempt to reconcile. He offered Erron, Devlon, and Gaius places as squires and he offered Lacie a place by the side of his lady wife, Samantha Tarly...he totally doesn't have any ulterior motives...
If it's not too much to ask, imagine the dress in this design is what Lacie wore when her and her brothers arrived in Old Town and you're Lady Samantha Tarly. From one lady to another, what assumptions are you making based on said dress/how are you judging it? This is to help me with future plot, please and thank you💙🩵

All throughout Fire & Blood, Alyn has a tendency to find himself in the middle of various couples’ relationships. Whether it’s intentional or just a complete coincidence is debatable.
There’s whatever was going on in the Stepstones. Racallio clearly desired Alyn but he also wanted to see Alyn bed his wives. Was it just a ploy to make Alyn more willing to the idea of bedding Racallio later on or was there some sort of spouse sharing happening here?
Racallio kept him for more than a fortnight in his sprawling wooden fortress on Bloodstone.
[…]
When he did, the “Queen” was so delighted with him that he sent two of his wives to Oakenfist’s bedchamber that night. “Give them sons,” Racallio commanded. “I want sons as brave and strong as you.” Our sources are at odds as to whether or not Lord Alyn did as he was bid.
In the end Ryndoon allowed that the Velaryon fleet might pass, for a price. He wanted three ships, an alliance writ on sheepskin and signed in blood, and a kiss. Oakenfist gave him the three least seaworthy ships in his fleet, an alliance writ on parchment and signed in maester’s ink, and the promise of a kiss from Lady Baela, should the “Queen” visit them on Driftmark.
— Fire & Blood, Under the Regents
There are rumours abound that Alyn may have had a fling with Princess Aliandra. She was being courted by many different people at the time, including a certain Lyseni who was also the only one who Alyn was seen alone with. Later on, it’s revealed that Aliandra takes that very same Lyseni, Drazenko, as her husband.
Aliandra Martell, Princess of Dorne, came out to meet with him, accompanied by a dozen of her current favorites and suitors. The “new Nymeria” had just celebrated her eighteenth nameday, and was reportedly much taken with the young, handsome, dashing “Hero of the Stepstones,” the bold admiral who had humbled the Braavosi. Lord Alyn required fresh water and provisions for his ships, whilst Princess Aliandra required services of a more intimate nature. Bastard Born would have us believe that he provided them, Hard as Oak that he did not. We do know that the attentions the flirtatious Dornish princess lavished upon him much displeased her own lords, and angered her younger siblings, Qyle and Coryanne.
— Fire & Blood, Under the Regents
Again he sailed along the parched, dry coasts of Dorne, this time beating eastward. Princess Aliandra was pleased at his return to Sunspear, and insisted on hearing every detail of his adventures.
[…]
It was at her court at Sunspear, during the Maiden’s Day feast (the very day that a thousand maidens were parading before Aegon III in King’s Landing), that his lordship was approached by a certain Drazenko Rogare, one of the envoys that Lys had sent to Aliandra’s court, who begged a private word. Curious, Lord Alyn agreed to listen, and the two men stepped out into the yard, where Drazenko leaned so close that his lordship said, “I feared he meant to kiss me.”
— Fire & Blood, Under the Regents
Then there is the close friendship between Alyn and his family’s former enemy, Lyonel. This closeness also extends to Lyonel’s wife, Samantha. The three have similar insolent natures so it makes sense why they mesh well with each other.
Lyonel Hightower himself came forth to meet them and welcome them to his city. The courtesy with which Lord Alyn treated Lady Sam warmed Lord Lyonel to him immediately, and the two youths struck up a fast friendship that did much to put all the old enmities between the blacks and greens to rest.
[…]
By that time, he had become close to Lady Sam as well as to Lord Lyonel, though whether he had any part in the writing of her infamous letter remains a matter of conjecture.
— Fire & Blood, Under the Regents
His lordship made a brief visit to the Arbor, as Lord Redwyne’s guest, and a longer one at Oldtown, where he renewed his friendships with Lord Lyonel Hightower and Lady Sam.

During the False Dawn, Lord Corlys Velaryon attempted to make peace between the warring factions. Lord Lyonel initially reacted angrily to the Sea Snake's offer, but Samantha allegedly persuaded her step-son to agree to the Corlys's terms by allowing Lyonel to seduce her and promising to marry him if he made peace. Sam was related to the Tarlys and Rowans, houses which supported the blacks of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. Munkun believes that Lord Hightower accepted the terms because of the end to Tyrell neutrality, however.

It really must dig into team green's craws that a woman founded the Oldtown Bank, Samantha Tarly. Who also had an arguably incestuous 13 years-long relationship, then marriage, with their Lord Lyonel Hightower. (He had been her stepson as she married his father, Ormund, before Roddy the Ruin killed him in the Dance.) They had 6 kids together before they married even, after the High Septon to condemned them died and there was a new one who finally approved them.
