Ogrim! He's very dear to me. I don't think about him often, but he's very special. I don't believe I've ever put how I feel about him into words.
I can't say I love his boss fight—learning the Desolate Dive cheese kind of took the fun out of it for me—but it was so enjoyable the first time I encountered him. Until later on in the game, I had trouble letting myself enjoy the boss fights and would instead get really ticked off if I didn't beat a boss right away, but I just loved Dung Defender's boss fight because he seems so delighted to fight with you! He's having so much fun reliving his glory days. It's wonderful.
It's always a pleasure to see him whenever I do the Pantheons in Godhome. He's not an enemy—he is a friend. A welcome visitor before I get beaten to death by the other bosses.
Where's the "I'm patting their head" bingo tile? :(

Sneaking Past Pose Pack

Joltik's adoption event sat in the drafts for quite a while. It took me whole a day to implement and I didn't let myself sleep until I finished everything. (It's 1 PM now...)
The event ended up wildly different because of how extra custom pets are implemented. You would think that they would be added in the same way as you get your cat/dog that you select during character creation. No. You have to buy a license. Only Marnie is authorized to sell them.

Emmet: @! Joltik likes you verrrrry much. They want to stay with you. I'm letting you adopt them. Yup. I filled out all the paperwork. The Joltiks are legally documented now. 
I never gave ours a name... Galvantula wouldn't let me. She is verrrry picky about it. But that's okay. Joltik is yours. You should name them. She came along for approval. So. What name should I put on the adoption form?

[Galvantula pauses for a moment to think and then offhandedly agrees.]
Emmet: Galvantula didn't shock me for that. That name is okay. Yup. I will file that with the Ferngill Republic. Don't worry about it. Make sure you take verrrry good care of our little Joltik!

The whole naming portion was a source of much more frustration than it should have been. In events, the name input box is brought up by the "catQuestion" command (which applies to dogs chosen at the start, too...

If you refuse, then Marnie also shows up no matter what you do. Farmhouse positions are also tricky and made even harder to find reference for after 1.6 added the farmhouse being moveable. Joltik kept spawning where Emmet was supposed to be so I had to use a move command just to get them to spawn one tile to the side. Galvantula was fine. I didn't get to updating her vanilla portraits yet so she's staying quiet.
The catQuestion command also only adds the pet you pick during character creation. There's no fields to target the usage. You have to buy a license. It's the only way to get another pet. I didn't want Joltik to replace a cat either since in-story you would have to earn the trust of both Emmet and Galvantula... There's no way you can do that by the first 25 days of spring. It's immersion breaking and you lose a cat.
I did find the license aspect funny though. It was oddly fitting for the mod's lore of Pokemon being pretty much banned from the region. Emmet is a threat to Stardew Valley's ecosystem. Not the best guy for the task of combating anti-Pokemon xenophobia.
Pet sizes are apparently hardcoded so I had to make a new spritesheet for Joltik as if they even need a 32 x 32 pixel area per frame. I did end up making new sprites for them while I was at it. I tried to base it off of the cat's behaviors so I have less animation fields to edit (I was tired). The cat loafs a lot. Trying to convey that in a tiny spider posed quite the challenge.

After everything was done, I figured that the whole adoption portion of the mod could easilly be taken apart to be its own mod as a demo of sorts for the expansion. So I went and made a content pack to post.
Bringing up your starter pet's friendship level takes quite some time, so it would be awkward if I let the event play with no preconditions. Because of that, I ended up including Joltik as an NPC and locking their adoption behind their heart level.
We actually only had two lines per day of the week (not including season) for daily dialogue. That shot up to six lines per day of the week for a full 0-2-4-6-8-10 in spring because I was determined to publish a mod. (I've been modding for nearly a year nonstop and I don't have anything playable... humiliating...)
Anyways! I hope you're all having fun with 1.6! It certainly brought new challenges and opportunities to the modding scene!

Patch 1.9 Full Event Summary! (Live Updates)
The 1.9 event summary got posted! I ran the patch notes through google translate and combined them with some translations from the official server. If I find anything else major I will update. Skin/Character previews can be found in my previous post, and I'll post some new character kit rundowns later! I will tag every spoiler post with the version number, so add that to your filters if you don't want to see anything about it.

Free Six Star for everyone: Semmelweiss, a mineral support that drains ally health to give them buffs based on their missing health.
First banner: Lucy, an intelligence DPS/support that spends Electricity to give their incantations extra effects, such as hitting more targets or buffing ally afflatus damage.
Second banner: Kakania, a plant support/tank/sub-healer that absorbs a portion of damage taken by allies and uses it to enhance her self-healing and damage.
Lorelei is a star afflatus five star support/sub dps. Her incantations haven't been released but her i1 Passive gives a buff depending on the most common card type in your hand, and her i3 passive gives her moxie when critting with her ult (Just Star Things). She is obtained from the new roguelite mode so may be accessible to players starting after 1.9.

Super Mario Brothers!
...the game, the movie, the game?
It's always been a dream to make a game out of the 90's Mario Bros. Movie but with all the projects on the go plus work it never really seemed like a possibility.
Over the years I've seen artists make AMAZING sprites from the movie and I saved a few just in case inspiration hit and I decided to put something together. I consider myself a pretty good artist but once I came across Izzi Rae's sprites (seen above) I thought, shit... those are kind of perfect. Especially the Goomba and Koopa Troopa. They are glorious. Izzi fused Super Mario World with the 90's Mario Movie really well. So I saved them and that was the end of the story... Until recently. Another artist SuperSledgeBro. released a tile set for Koopa City including flashing signs. Immediately I dug up Izzi's sprites and I just had to do something...
I used Petey Pest's engine and whipped up a quick little demo. I wanted to have the demo done in time for the theatre viewing of the 90's Mario movie in Toronto but the more I added the bigger the demo got. I wasn't even going to change Petey into Mario but it had to be done! (that's where all the extra animations come from)
The final Product, featured in the video above, used both sprites and tiles from the mentioned artists aswell as edits, add on and a background by me. I would've loved to make a full game but this was only suppsoed to be a fun little demo and I had to stop it before it started to consume me.

Cereal Box Hexcrawl
I was at my day job grocery shopping about two months ago when, on the back of a store brand Cheerios box, there was a hexcrawl.

Okay, the box says it's a sudoku puzzle. I don't know shit about sudoku. It's a hexcrawl now.
The first thing I did was recreate the hexcrawl in Affinity Publisher. You could do this with any graphic editing software or even by hand on paper, I just used what I'm comfortable with. I counted how many of each number and wrote it on the side; I also created a blank template that you can use.

I left the "region borders" out of mine because I felt like they restricted the creativity too much, but you can add them back in.

The next step is to colour the hexes. I assumed we would need towns, dungeons, forest, hills and mountains, so I grouped them together based on what felt right and how many I had of each. I then split up the blank tiles based on mostly grasslands but went with what was around.

Lastly, I added icons from Hexographer. I named some evocative dungeon locations, some crap 5 minute town names, and boom--we have an adventuring location ready for play. This took about an hour and most of that was graphic design!

So, fine, I made a local area. But, my wife is also running a Spelljammer campaign, and needed her own local area. To the rescue: The Cereal Hexcrawl.

We named a few areas and generated some interesting locations using the tables found in Stars Over Stormwreck by Mike Shea of Sly Flourish. I can't believe this kind of stuff wasn't in any of the books for Spelljammer!
After we had our locations, we just spread them out based on the numbers we had on our hex map. We might have moved a couple around. Then, I opened my hexcrawl up in Affinity Publisher and did the work doing graphic design (including the space background). I've got a print copy of the map on 11x17 paper coming from Printkeg right now!
Protip: If you are doing a space hexcrawl or other kind of space map, for personal use, Googling "planet clip art" or other things like that is a GREAT resource. High resolution transparent background graphic representations of planets? Gimme that shit!
So you can see how easy this is to pull off. I made my original hexcrawl in about an hour over my lunch break, and that includes finding all the icons and stuff. It's so easy to come up with a local area from this and the iterations and changes you could make are seemingly infinite.

Ugh I know tumblr is not the best forum to ask for CC help, but this is where I'm the most active and most likely to see the answers :')
So, I'm trying to convert the arch from Desert Luxe, and of course I'm way above my head again, as usual. The arch is 4 tiles wide, which I love because I love huge doors and windows and etc.
I (semi)succesfully expanded the footrpint of the arch to 4-tile, but I'm having an issue that after I add the extra footprint, the arch won't snap onto a wall anymore.
I tried to compare it with other arches & doors and edit a few things but it doesn't seem to want to work for the love of me and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this issue :') ❤

SUN DOGS - from Tales From the Dickt: Cumplete Edition

The energy manifested in that public restroom on that harrowing day was unlike any conceived before. Its limestone, tile walls had become washed with a lavender hue and the air itself took on the limber physicality of waves in the ocean. Swathes of people sat on the sticky, urine-soaked floors and gawked in amazement at something that beheld a capacity for beauty which was not meant to be seen by human optics. I had been engrossed in its divine aura for an afternoon so long it seemed like it would never end, oh how I wish it had.
Customer service is a dehydrating occupation, it begets the kind of thirst that can only be quenched by diet coke and bi-hourly smoke breaks. It’s the kind of career that demands you forgo the physical sensations of poor health and consume inhibitors that provide you with fleeting feelings of energy. Generally, working customer service is like taking deep breaths at the summit of a high mountain, bad for you.
I liked to occupy myself on lunch breaks with a book. In equal parts due to my love for literature, and also the complex character it presents to the boy in the bakery I've wanted to scramble my insides since the day I started working there. I was remiss that day to have to end my time with Kafka’s The Trial sooner than I’d like because of how my bladder berated me that it needed emptying. My assumption that not drinking water for four hours would correlate to less bathroom breaks couldn’t have been more wrong.
An empty bathroom is always a pleasant place to be. The muscles in the arch of my foot ached as they strained to climb the impossible walls of sand. I’d ascend a dune and frustratingly slide back down as the earth below me avalanched under my weight. All around me were flipped cars and loose groceries that would soon disappear under the sands forever. I finally reached the summit of the largest dune.

Not alone.

Procedural Skyboxes 2 - Stars

This time I need to credit a second excellent tutorial, this time by Tim Coster. My end result looks very different from this, but the underlying principles were essential.
Process and discussion below the cut.
Mk0 - Voronoi
My first attempt at stars was based off the same tutorial I referenced in the previous post, using Voronoi noise to space the stars. Two inputs control star density and star size.

This might work fine for the use case in the tutorial, but in trying to adapt it for mine I immediately encountered some major issues.
the very even spacing feels kinda unnatural, especially with fewer, larger stars
there’s a seam in the sky (probably wouldn’t be visible with smaller stars)
heavy distortion around the sky zenith

Kinda looks like you're going to hyperspace every time you look up.
The seam and distortion issues are a result of the UVs (the coordinates that determine how the shader wraps around the sky). I solved this by moving to a kinda parachute-shaped UV as outlined in this incredibly helpful post on the Unity forums.
The unnaturally even distribution is a consequence of using Voronoi noise as a base. An entirely new approach was called for, which is where the Coster tutorial comes in.
Mk1 - Tiling with displacement
I skipped the addition of the spiky light flares (not the aesthetic I’m going for) and worked through the tutorial as far as the section on size variation.
The Mk1 shader is a much better fit for the feel I’m looking for, and also looks good when you stare directly up into the sky, not just at the horizons. It also has a lot more controls. Star size remains, and gains an extra control for how much variation in size.

Density now has two controls: one which controls the density of the “tiling” (it’s not a repeating texture, because each tile is randomised, but there is tiling) and one which randomly omits a certain proportion of stars, making the distribution more gappy.

There’s also a control for how randomly the stars are spaced. I probably won’t want to move this much from a value of about 0.8 (1 produces a little more tight bunching than I like), but it’s there.

Last but not least, there is a setting for the hardness of the stars. This is going to be important later for modelling the effects of different amounts of atmosphere on the visible starfield.

Mk2 - Galaxy Band

In the Mk1 shader, star distribution is even in all directions. The next thing I wanted to add was a band of denser stars across the sky to represent the bulk of the galaxy - as we see the Milky Way as a band across the sky from Earth.
Up to this point I had been using the purely-Shadergraph approach from the tutorial – which involves a very clunky grid of nine nearly-identical subnodes to perform an operation that is much more neatly executed by a for loop in code.
When I started trying to vary star density across the sky, this clunky 9-way graph was no longer adequate. Maybe I could have made it work with the right transformation of inputs, but it reached the point where it made more sense to bite the bullet and learn how to include the HLSL code from the tutorial and edit it to suit.
Once I managed that, feeding in variable density across the sky got a lot easier.
A new control variable, BandIntensity, controls how dramatically stars are grouped into the galactic band.

It was also at this point that I added twinkle, with controls for rate and magnitude. Eventually twinkle and hardness will be tied together, because they’re both functions of amount of atmosphere, but for now they’re separate controls.

Next I added a band of faint texture behind the stars.
At low hardness, it’s just a soft stripe of Unity’s Gradient Noise. At high hardness, to make it seem “sharper” and more like a dense field of points instead of a smudge, the gradient noise is multiplied by some Simple Noise.

The end result –  a pretty good looking, flexible starfield.

I wasn't originally planning to release this pose pack, because it's complicated and there's a high risk of clipping and it's a little weird lolol (Like blanket poses on a fountain, huh?) You can place the blanket in the same green space as the teleporter for it to line up properly. I used T.O.O.L. a lot to make it look perfect, so that is my advice as well.

Home in a Box - Tier 1 Micro Home

This tier 1 tiny house on the Comfy Cubby lot in Newcrest was my first ever tiny home build, with pretty limited packs and a lot of outdoor space for activities. Obviously minimalist, so feel free to download and edit as you'd like. I wanted to challenge myself to keep the entire home in a 30 tile square, but if you'd like to bump out the bathroom an extra 2 tiles for a little extra space to add a dedicated bathroom sink feel free to do so lol.

Illustrator Pattern Making
We looked at creating patterns in Illustrator to add as "endpapers" in the InDesign booklet:
Create the icon to include in your pattern
My illustration I created was a cat:

2. Creating the swatch for the potential pattern
Draw a shape behind your icon, in this case we used both hexagons and squares.
Square:
Draw the square, then arrange the square to the back so that the icon is in front of the square:

Then DRAG THE ICON AND THE SQUARE INTO THE SWATCH PANEL (Window: Swatches)

You can now create a shape to fill in with this pattern:
Just simply draw your shape and use the fill option with the new pattern swatch:

3: Editing the pattern swatch
To edit and view the properties of your pattern, double click the pattern icon/thumbnail and it will open up option panels for your pattern:

There are many options to explore for this pattern swatch:
You can use the direct selection tool and edit points inside of your pattern by clicking into the illuminated square
You can edit the orientation, size and positioning of your pattern
You can add more elements using the pen and brush tools
You can change the colours of your pattern using the swatches bar and selecting the shapes

Begin again by creating the hexagon shape then arranging it so that your pattern icon is in the front.
In this case we added an extra hexagon shape but this is optional to your designs:

Again, drag your selection of the hexagon pattern to the swatch panel:

As you may notice, the new fill has gaps between the hexagons so again we double click the swatch thumbnail and edit its presets:

4. Creating an endpaper
Draw a shape that fills the art board and use the pattern fill you want to fill the shape:

Then to transfer this you must expand the selection, otherwise it does not transfer properly to Indesign as this swatch only is in Illustrator. Do this in Object: Expand

To check that the selection can be transferred use the wireframe shortcut Command+Y. If there is a wireframe created of the design, it is transferrable.

Open up Indesign and paste the selection onto preferred pages:

To move the pages to the position of endpapers Shift + select the pages you want to move and drag to add under the pages in the ages panel:

This pattern making tutorial has been extremely helpful to me because in my compositing task I hand drew and added each individual part of my pattern to the lollipop, when I could have adopted these methods! I am happy that my skills have progressed far and very quickly in Illustrator where following these tutorials remotely was very easy for me, and I completed it very quickly.
And, Fundies is complete... for now!
