He's so silly but then all his dialogue is so serious hahaha I think Awakened will always be my favourite when they appear in the story.

Patch 1.9 Full Event Summary! (Live Updates)

The 1.9 event summary got posted! I ran the patch notes through google translate and combined them with some translations from the official server. If I find anything else major I will update. Skin/Character previews can be found in my previous post, and I'll post some new character kit rundowns later! I will tag every spoiler post with the version number, so add that to your filters if you don't want to see anything about it.

Free Six Star for everyone: Semmelweiss, a mineral support that drains ally health to give them buffs based on their missing health.

First banner: Lucy, an intelligence DPS/support that spends Electricity to give their incantations extra effects, such as hitting more targets or buffing ally afflatus damage.

Second banner: Kakania, a plant support/tank/sub-healer that absorbs a portion of damage taken by allies and uses it to enhance her self-healing and damage.

Lorelei is a star afflatus five star support/sub dps. Her incantations haven't been released but her i1 Passive gives a buff depending on the most common card type in your hand, and her i3 passive gives her moxie when critting with her ult (Just Star Things). She is obtained from the new roguelite mode so may be accessible to players starting after 1.9.

Patch 1.9 Characters and Skins!

Playable Lucy!!!!! I'm only spoiled up to Chapter 5 so I'm not sure if she comes back in the story before 1.9, but now she's finally getting a banner.

New character Kakania is a six star Plant unit. Not sure what type of character is yet but she seems to fight by summoning mirrors. Will update! She seems to have a German (?) accent.

FREE SIX STAR ! Semmelweis is going to be given out to everyone during the anniversary event. Interestingly her i1 and i2 skins look completely different. Perhaps pre/post "vampirism"?

Lorelei is a new five star debuting in 1.9! She seems to be a music themed sub dps/support, but we've only seen her insight passives so far. She seems to be wearing a frilly dress combined with a strait jacket..??? Idk what's going on here. Hopefully she appears in the story to explain.

Midmer Jr. gets a free skin I guess. Her three fans are probably very happy!

Back to good characters! Desert Flannel is getting a skin. Mostly likely roaring jukebox.

Voyager is getting this dreamlike possibly Alice in Wonderland themed skin. Looks like it's leaning more into witchy-bard than cosmic space maid.

Our first skin confirmed to have a brand new ult animation! Her mallet is swapped for an AXE. (added to list of units who would cut you in half (37: "Intersect and Divide!" = "I'm going to bisect you now.").

Regulus is becoming the first character to get a second non-insight skin! It seems she took lessons from Lilya, as her boat is now flying and her ult is this insane animation where she flies by and drops a big bomb on the enemy.

There are some small labels in the top left of each skin saying "free", "garment", "advanced", or "unique". I presume the garment skins will be obtained as normal through the shop or jukebox, but I'm not sure about the others. It could be that Advanced skins are at a higher price point, with Unique being a tier above that. I'll research and update!

Edit 1: Advanced Skins debuted in 1.6, and Unique is a tier above that. Advanced are 1080 Crystal Drops and Unique are 1.6k.

I've had so much uni shit on I wanted to wait before doing the side events but I completely forgot some would close before Ezra came out 😭😭😭😭😭 I was going to always get the event achievements so I could put all the perfection badges on my profile 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I actually got a feeling of loss and regret when I realised what I'd done????

That being said, here is an article on a type of dark pattern called Temporal Exclusion. Gacha games are intentionally designed to be habit forming so players will develop emotional connection to meaningless aspects. I don't think anyone in real life has ever even seen my profile in game, why do I care about badges? How much progress have I really lost from missing out on 2 Prophetic Birds and some Psychube materials I already have 1000 of? None of this stuff matters - play for your own fun and not to meet arbitrary deadlines set by the devs!

Brief Explanation of Time Travel in Reverse 1999

I still see people a bit confused about how the storm functions in r1999, so here's a quick summary. This is accurate up until patch 1.5 (I'm playing blind so don't know about 1.6-8!) and will contain some plot spoilers.

What we know

- Before 1999, time flowed normally.

- In 1999, storms began that reverted the world to an earlier year. It's like time is instantly set back to a previous date. After a storm, time flows normally until another occurs.

- Some locations in the world (Manus bases, the foundation, the island) are immune to the storm. The time in these locations has been flowing normally since 1999. They haven't "time travelled" in any way, they're just going forward linearly like ordinary.

- If a living thing is caught in a storm, it disappears. Seemingly the only exception to this rule is Vertin. Her being immune to the storm outside of safe areas is why the foundation is so interested in her. Two versions of a person will never be present at the same time.

- Time is never flowing backwards. Storms just instantly revert it to previous points. People/things do not literally act in reverse until the new time is reached.

- Both humans and arcanists are safe from the storm in safe areas like the foundation. However, only arcanists are safe inside Vertin's suitcase.

What we don't know

- What happens to people caught in the storm? It's unclear if those people are lost forever, or if the time they are in continues to exist and they're still alive there.

- Can the storm move time forward? It's unlikely because reversing is sort of the whole premise of the game, but it isn't ruled out yet. Perhaps this is how characters lost to the storm will return in the future. Schneider is fine everyone just keep believing.

- Why is Vertin immune? In 1.4 we found out it's because of Asymmetric Protein G, but we still don't really know what it is or why she has it. The island's cave seemed to contain the same substance, which could be a clue to how the safe spaces are created/function.

- Can you meet yourself in the past? This hasn't happened yet in the story, but could be a cool plot hook for a future patch.

To my knowledge this is all accurate, but please correct me if I got anything wrong, as long as it's not spoilers for content not yet in global. Thanks : )

One thing I find very interesting about Balatro's design is that it combines the huge variation of jokers with consistent access to smaller pools of items. While some jokers obviously synergise very well, you're often able to tune your run even if you never find that second or third you want.

Nearly every tarot is useful and you can roll for them over and over until you find exactly what you need. Spectrals are a lot more... turbulent, but with an even smaller and more powerful pool you often find that they can completely flip your run on its head.

Planets can feel a little more frustrating when you're focusing on one hand type. However, sometimes if I miss Earth and keep getting stuck with Mars a few times over, and then find a couple of relevant jokers, and oooh a Ouija from a spectral pack!? Suddenly my full house run has turned into four of a kind and I'm hitting numbers I've never seen before!

I never feel completely screwed by RNG like I would in other roguelikes. At lower stakes, the game always feels winnable, and the only difference between a "good" or "bad" run is how far I'm going past the final boss.
