(the specific golden guard pictured with darius is his mentor, who i have named Ezekiel to better keep track of in conversations. His disappearance is what originally started darius's opposition to the emperor. eberwolf's motivations werent fixed soley on one person but more focused on his home being destroyed and his lifestyle being restricted after he his wife and their 20 kits were run out of their home and his wife was forced to join the oracle coven despite her beastkeeping prowess. i love coming up w looooore)

me: lol wouldn't it be funny if eberwolf was 45 and had a wife and 20 kids. and his wifes name was eberwife

me a day later: eberwolf was a 25 year old newlywed in his ancestral home on the knee with his first kits on the way when people slowly started leaving in droves. Increased Belosian presance meant less and less industry, as most jobs relied on being multitrack or at least able to do multiple types of magic because of the conditions. most people who lived on the knee needed to be able to do healing, beastkeeping, and plant magic as a baseline, and a lot of the major houses (factions, tribes, whatever) were slowly being forced closer to the torso because the increased Coven presance meant a lot of them were joining covens and could no longer teach or do trades or even survive. the combined pressure to join a coven and lack of survivability as a specialist made the knee 'unlivable' (this happened to raines family who had only stayed because thats where their ancestral home was and raine had a good opportunity at saint epiderms) (side note: saint epiderms being a paid school in an area where there was an education drought AND the economy was based on barter was very much intentional) eberwolf and his wife were both raised on the knee and they had decided to raise their family in his ancestral home until, when his kits were toddlers, eberwolf's wife was forcibly entered into a coven she didn't choose, becoming unable to leave the house. Eberwolf was furious that his wife could no lover speak to her animal compantions or heal herself or their children and he began to suspect that the emperor forcing people off the knee may be intentional because of the sacred nature of the land, but he eventually had to cave once his children began to reach schooling age and there were no educators left to group homeschool in their circle, plus his wife could no longer help as much as she used to be able to and needed protection just to leave the house, so he made the difficult descision to leave home and joined a coven, trying to put his suspicions to rest and do what was best for his family, until he met darius and realized he could do something about the goverment that wrecked his life.
