Ancient Roman Wall Used to Trap Spartacus Found in Italy
A team of archaeologists has found the remains of a Roman-constructed wall in Calabria, southern Italy. It was built with the purpose of trapping Spartacus, the former Roman gladiator who escaped and led a slave revolt.
The researchers behind this find, led by Dr. Paolo Visona, a classical archaeologist from the University of Kentucky in the United States, found the structure in the mountainous region of Calabria, where Spartacus and his men fled in 71 BC in order to escape Sicily.
Walls such as this one were constructed under the orders of the Roman general Marcus Licinius Crassus, who was in charge of the Roman legions. Crassus’ mission was to capture or murder Spartacus and his band of freed slaves and former gladiators.

The ancient wall dissects an area of the Dossone della Melia forest in the Calabria region right on the southern tip of Italy. The excavated stone wall and supporting earthwork was roughly 1.7 miles long and is mostly in good condition.
Archaeologists also uncovered a Roman defensive ditch known as a fossa as well as the remains of what seemed to have been an embankment system.
“The wall has now been conclusively identified as part of the structures built by the Roman general Marcus Licinius Crassus to contain the slave revolt leader Spartacus and his forces,” the Archaeological Institute of America said in a statement announcing the discovery.

Mostly covered by vegetation with only small sections visible to the eye, the remains of the Roman wall were not prominently on display. However, a group of environmental workers came across parts of the stone wall while hiking through the forest, and believing it to be something ancient, they notified local cultural authorities.
Researchers and archaeologists analyzed the structure after some time. They used ground-penetrating radar and LiDAR aerial survey equipment to find out more about the semi-buried wall’s construction. They also extracted soil samples and took magnetometer readings in an effort to learn more about when the wall was built.
Historical accounts of Spartacus’ life come primarily from Plutarch and Appian, who both penned their works more than a hundred years after his death. Plutarch’s Life of Crassus and Appian’s Civil Wars provide the most thorough account of the slave revolt.
Although he was a major character in Roman history, no contemporary sources exist, and all accounts were written by people who were only indirectly involved. There have been no testimonies from the slaves of eyewitnesses.
Very little is known about Spartacus besides the events of the war, and extant accounts are full of contradictions.

Battle of Fort Washington
The Battle of Fort Washington (16 November 1776) took place during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) as part of the British effort to seize control of Manhattan Island. It saw a British and Hessian force capture Fort Washington, near the northern end of Manhattan at modern-day Washington Heights, in one of the worst American defeats of the war.
Fort Washington was constructed in the summer of 1776 as part of General George Washington's plan to defend Manhattan from the British. When the Continental Army was eventually pushed out of Manhattan during the New York and New Jersey Campaign (July 1776 to January 1777), Washington left a garrison of troops behind in the fort to maintain a toehold on the island. On 16 November 1776, the fort came under attack by the British army under General William Howe, with the main assault being led by the Hessians, professional German mercenaries fighting for the British. After the Americans were pushed back from their outer defenses, they capitulated, surrendering Fort Washington and its garrison of 2,800 men, who became prisoners; three-quarters of these prisoners would die aboard the infamous British prison ships anchored off Brooklyn. The Battle of Fort Washington was a costly American defeat that deprived the Continental Army of men and supplies at a time when it was running dangerously low on both.
Construction of the Fort
On 13 April 1776, General George Washington arrived in Manhattan at the head of his 19,000-man Continental Army. He had long feared that New York City would be the next target of the British; its capture would allow the British unimpeded access to the Hudson River, which could allow them to sail an army into the American interior. Washington decided to construct a series of fortifications near the hamlet of Brooklyn on Long Island, anticipating that the British would have to take Long Island before advancing to New York City, which was at the time entirely confined to the upper part of Manhattan Island.
Should the defense of Long Island fail, Washington desired to fortify the Hudson itself to impede British progress up the river. In June, Washington sent General Nathanael Greene, one of his most trusted subordinates, to scout for potential positions to build a fort. After surveying the terrain, Greene settled on a hill at the highest part of Manhattan, near the island's northernmost point; in Greene's opinion, the position would be easy to defend if fortified properly. Washington gave his approval, agreeing that the spot was the key to the Hudson's defense, and a Pennsylvania regiment immediately got to work constructing the fort, under General Greene's supervision. By the end of July, the fort was finished and was named Fort Washington.
Greene also oversaw the construction of a secondary fortification on the opposite side of the river, atop the New Jersey Palisades; originally named Fort Constitution, the New Jersey fort was eventually renamed to Fort Lee in honor of Washington's second-in-command, General Charles Lee. With Fort Washington guarding the east side of the Hudson and Fort Lee on the west, it seemed the strategically valuable river might be safe from British control, the idea being that both forts could unleash a devastating crossfire bombardment on any British ship that attempted to sail up the river. To prevent British ships from simply racing past the forts, the Americans sunk hulks of ships loaded with boulders in the middle of the Hudson, creating a barrier that would block the British vessels and make them more vulnerable to the forts' cannons. This type of barrier is known as a chevaux de frise.
As for the design of Fort Washington itself, it was a pentagon-shaped earthwork fortification covering four acres of land, its walls made of rock and piled up dirt. An imposing spectacle sitting on a 250-foot-high (76 m) hill, the fort was not as secure as it may have seemed. It had no barracks for the men, had no ditches and palisades for additional defense, and, crucially, it had no water supply; though the garrison could haul water up from below, the fort's lack of water storage would be disastrous in the event of a siege. General Greene, who became temporarily incapacitated by illness during Fort Washington's construction, did not notice these critical defects.

cahokia was a city located across what's today the mississippi river, lasting between about 1050-1350 ce, after which it was abandoned until about 1500. due to its inhabitants leaving little-no written records and no oral histories of it existing, the city's original name is unknown - it was named posthumously for the cahokia people who were living in the area at the time of french contact.
at its peak in the 11th and 12th centuries, cahokia was the largest city north of mesoamerica and the largest settlement of the mississippian culture with a population of 15-20,000. it served as both an economic and cultural center; the city's main trades included farming, logging, hunting, pottery, weaving, and trading. the exact reason for its decline in the 13th and 14th centuries is unknown, with theories including war, political fragmentation, disease, and flooding among others being proposed.
like other mississippian settlements, cahokia is best known for its diligent city planning and extensive earthworks. its basic layout - thought to be inspired by the creators' view of the heavens - consists of four quarters and several soil and clay-constructed mounds oriented in the cardinal directions. all of them are centered on monks mound, the tallest of the earthworks, which may have housed the city's rulers. most residents lived on farmlands surrounding this main area. the city also includes the "woodhenge", an astronomical observatory consisting of wood posts aligned with the positions of the sun throughout the year, which is thought to have been relocated several times throughout the city's history. evidence of a copper workshop and a mass burial site have also been found in some of the city's mounds.
some siouan-speaking nations further west like the osage, kaw, ponca, quapaw, and omaha have preserved some elements present in cahokian culture such as chunkey and their meticulous urban planning. it's been suggested that these nations are a result of former cahokian people or other mississippians in the cahokian sphere of influence gradually migrating elsewhere. though cahokia had great influence, that practically no oral histories of the city exist indicates that former residents either didn't think it important enough to memorialize or didn't want to memorialize it.

An 1887 chromolithograph by well-known contemporary illustrator Thure de Thulstrup depicts a bayonet charge by Union forces during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. That bloody battle took place in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, over the course of nearly two weeks in May 1864, and resulted in more than 18,000 dead, wounded, captured, or missing Union soldiers, and more than 12,000 casualties on the Confederate side. During the fighting, a young West Point–educated Union colonel named Emory Upton concluded that attacking the Confederates' well-constructed earth-and-log works required a new mode of attack. Rather than advancing in long lines of infantry that halted in the open in order to exchange fire with a well-protected enemy behind earthworks, Upton argued for storming columns that never stopped to open fire, but instead advanced right up to the earthworks, engaging the enemy with the bayonet. He tested his new tactics as part of an all-out attack on the evening of May 10; its initial success impressed the Union commander Ulysses S. Grant, who duplicated the maneuver on a larger scale.
Thulstrip was a Swedish-born artist and magazine illustrator who specialized in military scenes. The print was published by L. Prang and Company in Boston, Massachusetts, a firm known for producing scenes from the Civil War, and for pioneering the sale of Christmas cards in the United States. The owner of the company, Louis Prang—a native of Prussia who emigrated to Boston in 1850–-has been referred to as the "father of the American Christmas card."
