@springonmytraptillicomeback
on it boss jeremike headcanons weeeee
After Evan's death, Michael was more or less a complete social outcast in high school. Abandoned by those he formerly called friends, eating lunch alone. Of course, he understood that it was well deserved after ruminating on it with a fresh outlook. However, Jeremy saw an emo boy in need of fixing (/hj) and did just that.
It was Jeremy's idea to color Michael's hair red. Quite the first introduction to Mrs. Afton.
After the bite, Jeremy consequentially lost a lot of his fine motor control function, which made writing, holding things, and even eating difficult. But the human body is swag as fuck and if one part of the brain is damaged, it can literally remap those neural pathways to another part of the brain.
Of course, this takes as little as a few months to even years to fully complete.
In the meantime, Michael helped him with writing, drove him around, and whatever other difficulties he faced.
Modern day, while Jeremy will still never be back to 100%, he can manage most things without much difficulty save for things that require the utmost precision, like soldering.
While he didn't lose his right eye in the bite, it was completely useless, if not able to see just vague light and shadows, because even blind people still see something. Occasional flashes of light, nerves trying to connect. He would later get it removed and replace it with an interchangeable glass eye.
Jeremy drives a Subaru WRX. Because he's gay. (/ref) His car is kitted out with various mobility aids, like an altered shifter, steering, and hand controls for acceleration and brakes.
In the same vein, Michael still drives his deadbeat father's 1974 Challenger R/T (in Plum Crazy Purple, of course) and maintains it as well as its probably the only good thing his father ever did for him. It rides like a sled on a bed of rocks, so he much prefers to ride with Jeremy if possible.
Jeremy actually loves to cook and bake, blame it on the stoner brain, but damn if he doesn't know what's good. He actually shares these recipes between Henry and Adelaide, and they share theirs with him. Gotta make sure her boy is getting treated well.
Conversely, Michael cannot cook. At all. DO NOT LET HIM COOK. This man can only make microwave meals.
They got married in 2013, right after gay marriage was first legalized in Utah (later rescinded then re-legalized).
After getting scooped, Jeremy happily returned the favor in helping Michael with his affliction. Dressing and redoing his sutures, helping him shower.
Even as Michael felt like a detriment to Jeremy ("I don't deserve you."), Jeremy would insist that there was no other place he'd rather be than to nurse his husband back to health.
I have a comic in the works about this, but because of Jeremy's free lobotomy, he doesn't really process fear the way others do, if at all. When he saw what had become of Michael after months of silence and hiding at Henry's house, his first reaction was something along the lines of "..... siiiiick."
Post scoop, Michael struggles with chronic fatigue and pain, leading him often to be unable to do his own hair properly because of how long he has to hold his arms up. Jeremy has no qualms with this because he absolutely loves doing people's hair.
#posting this separately because i looove attention#this isnt all of them its just all i can remember auughhh#five nights at freddy's#jeremike#michael afton#jeremy fitzgerald#arc.txt#long post#i need to find my writing tag again fr

Queen Camilla's Consort Crown
It has been announced that Queen Camilla will wear Queen Mary's Crown for the coronation on May 6th. I was expecting her to wear Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother's Crown so this was a surprise.
The crown was made by Garrard in 1911 using brilliant and rose cut diamonds set in silver and gold. You can see in the picture at the top that the three largest diamonds have been replaced with rock crystal/quartz replicas. The original diamonds were removed so that they could be worn in other jewelry which is normal for British consort crowns.
For Queen Camilla the Cullinan III and IV are being put back in the crown but not the Koh-i-Noor. I let you read about the Koh-i-Noor diamond on your own. I think this is a very smart choice and it's not the first time the center of this crown has been set with another diamond.
For the coronation of King George VI in 1937, Queen Mary wore the the crown without the arches or the cap and with the Cullinan V in the center since the Koh-i-Noor was being used in Queen Elizabeth's crown. These are the clearest photos I could find but you can see that the whole brooch is used because the diamond does not take up the full space of the center cross and there are smaller diamonds on the sides. I'm not sure which stone she is wearing in the center of the band since she's wearing the Cullinan IV as a brooch. Edit: @gloriouszipperskeletonshoe has the answer. They temporarily put one of the diamonds from Queen Victoria's Regal Circlet in the band. The Regal Circlet was being dismantled anyway so the diamonds could be used in Queen Elizabeth's crown.
The eight arches are detachable and only four of them will be used this time. I'm guessing it's so that the crown is more in line with St. Edward's Crown and the Imperial State Crown which both only have four. All of the changes being made are options already available for the crown, it just hasn't been worn in this exact configuration before.
Above are the crowns of Queen Alexandra, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Mary. The only usable options are Elizabeth's and Mary's because all previous consort crowns (Mary of Modena, Adelaide, and Alexandra) have had all of the gemstones removed and some of them have been reset with rock crystal or glass stones. The last four queens consort have had new crowns made for them and this is the first time a consort crown has been reused since 1727. The Crown Jewels by Anna Keay is the best book on the subject if you are interested.

HISTORY RESEARCH
Cornwall Park Timeline
Cornwall Park has a rich history and has undergone numerous transformations since the volcanic eruption that formed Maungakiekie 67,000 years ago. Presently, Maungakiekie is divided into two distinct parks. Maungakiekie One Tree Hill Domain is collaboratively managed by Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau and Auckland Council under the Tūpuna Maunga Authority, while Cornwall Park is overseen by the Cornwall Park Trust Board. This historical account focuses on the evolution and development of Cornwall Park.
67,000 years ago, Maungakiekie was formed in a volcanic eruption, creating the iconic scoria cone we see today. Walking around the park, you will see scoria and basalt rock formed during this eruption.
1350-1800 Māori arrived in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland in 1350, after which Maungakiekie became a central pā.
In October 1839, Sir John arrived in Adelaide, where he met his future business partner, William Brown. He spends the next four months traveling around Australia before deciding to try his luck, making a living in Aotearoa New Zealand.
1840- Sir John lands in Wellington before sailing to Waiomu, where he and William Brown live with local Māori for three months. He visited Waiheke Island via waka with Māori from Waiomu before moving to Motukorea/Browns Island with William Brown.
1841- Sir John and William Brown arrive in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland to set up their trading business Brown & Campbell Co. from a little canvas tent on the shores of the Waitematā. Not long after this, Sir John sources timber from Northland to build Acacia Cottage on what is now Shortland Street.
1844- Irish settler Thomas Henry purchases 400 hectares of Maungakiekie land from Māori and renames this Mt Prospect Estate.
1847- The Crown confiscates part of Maungakiekie from Thomas Henry, which is then quarried for basalt and scoria rock.
1853- Sir John and William Brown purchase Mt Prospect Estate, rename it One Tree Hill Estate, and lease it out to farmers.
1870-1880- Sir John establishes the Olive Grove after an unsuccessful attempt to cultivate a winery (11,000 grape vines were initially planted). After removing the vines, 5,000 olive trees were planted, some of which are still growing in the park today.
1871- The Crown-owned land at the summit of Maungakiekie One Tree Hill is declared a public reserve. Quarrying is still taking place on the volcanic cone.
1875- Sir John plants a young tōtara in the middle of a grove on top of the maunga with five Monterey pine trees around it to act as a windbreak. Unfortunately, it did not survive the harsh conditions. Only one pine remained as the iconic “One Tree” until 2000.
1881- Sir John decides he is going to give his One Tree Hill Estate to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, later gifting it to the whole of Aotearoa New Zealand.
1901- The One Tree Hill Estate is renamed Cornwall Park after the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in honour of their visit to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1901. It was officially gifted to the people of Aotearoa New Zealand in 1901, but it will take two more years before the park is open to the public.
On August 24th, the Cornwall Park Trust Board hold its first meeting to commence management of the park in fulfilment of Sir John’s vision. American landscape architect Austin Strong works closely with Sir John to create a park plan and landscape design to be enjoyed by all New Zealanders. The design of the sweeping tree-lined drives leading through the park was planned from the very beginning, providing access and amenities whilst highlighting the natural beauty of the slopes of Maungakiekie.
1903- On August 26th, Huia Lodge and Cornwall Park are open to the public. Huia Lodge is built in the Queen Anne Revival style to house the park caretaker and serve as a stop-off point for visitors making their way to the tihi (summit) of Maungakiekie. The front room was designed as a tea parlour for visitors, with refreshments served on sunny days.
1906- On May 24th, the people of Tāmaki Maukaurau Auckland pay by public subscription for a statue and water fountain of Sir John Logan Campbell to be placed in the middle of Campbell Crescent.
1907- The summit road is opened to traffic and Sir John gifts an additional 41.6 hectares of adjacent land to the park.
1908- A further 57.6 hectares are added to the parkland and the kiosk (now the Cornwall Park Bistro) is constructed.
1912- On June 22nd, Sir John passes away aged 94. A small section of land is transferred to the park trustees atop Maungakiekie for his burial site. Sir John’s funeral contained the largest funeral procession in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s history.
1921- Acacia Cottage is moved from Shortland St. to Cornwall Park and restored as a heritage building.
1926- The Cornwall Park Trust Board employs Farm Managers to form the Cornwall Park farm on areas previously leased to independent farmers.
1940- Sir John bequeaths the obelisk at the Maungakiekie summit in honour of the Māori people. It is completed in 1940, but due to World War II, it was decided that the opening ceremony would be postponed according to Tikanga Māori which states it is inappropriate to unveil a monument during a time of bloodshed. The ceremony eventually took place on April 24th 1948 and was unveiled by the Māori King, Koroki.
1942-1944- The US Army 39th General Hospital is built within the park for American soldiers.
1945-1975- After the U.S. military leaves the site, the Auckland Hospital Board requests urgent access to these facilities to help cope with the post-war baby boom. The hospital remained in Cornwall Park serving as the National Women’s Hospital until 1964 and Cornwall Hospital geriatric unit until 1974.
1956- The Memorial Steps are constructed as a memorial to Sir John. They are designed by prominent civic architectural firm Gummer and Ford.
1986-1988- After the hospital was demolished, the land was returned to Cornwall Park and restored and developed for use by the public. Trees are planted, and the Band Rotunda is built.
1990- Simmental cattle are introduced into the park.
1994- Huia Lodge is recognised as a heritage building and following restoration, it is transformed into the Cornwall Park Information Centre.
2000- On October 26th, the lone pine on Maungakiekie One Tree Hill is removed after being attacked several times over the century, as it became a health and safety risk to allow it to remain.
2016- On June 11th, a dawn ceremony conducted by the Tūpuna Maunga Authority takes place on the summit of Maungakiekie, where a grove of three tōtara and six pōhutukawa saplings are planted, grown from parent trees living on Maungakiekie. A shelterbelt of native shrubs is planted around the trees to protect them from the exposed summit conditions. In the next few decades, arborists will undergo a process of selection that will see the strongest of these trees standing tall to become the hill’s next “One Tree”.

Why Earthmoving Is Crucial For Infrastructure Development?
Infrastructure development is the backbone of any thriving community, ensuring that roads, bridges, buildings, and utilities are efficiently constructed and maintained.
One of the most critical components of this process is earthmoving. Whether in bustling urban areas or the serene outskirts, earthmoving Adelaide is indispensable in transforming landscapes and laying the groundwork for future projects.
The Foundation of Modern Construction
Imagine building a house on uneven ground or constructing a road without properly preparing the terrain. It simply wouldn't work.
Earthmoving is the initial step in any construction project, creating a stable and level foundation. This process involves:
Excavation: Removing soil and rock to create a solid base.
Grading: Ensuring the ground is level and ready for construction.
Trenching: Digging channels for utilities like water, gas, and electricity.
Without earthmoving experts, these tasks would be nearly impossible to accomplish with the precision and efficiency required.
Enhancing Safety and Stability
Safety is paramount in construction, and a well-executed earthmoving project significantly enhances the stability of any structure.
Earthmoving properly prepares the ground so that buildings and roads can withstand natural forces such as heavy rains, floods, and earthquakes.
The meticulous process of compacting soil and removing debris reduces the risk of future structural issues, ensuring the long-term durability of infrastructure.
Environmental Considerations
In addition to safety, modern earthmoving practices in Adelaide incorporate environmentally friendly techniques. Professionals in earthmoving Adelaide prioritise:
Erosion Control: Implementing measures to prevent soil erosion during and after construction.
Soil Conservation: Preserving topsoil for future landscaping and agricultural use.
Water Management: Creating proper drainage systems to manage stormwater effectively.
These environmentally conscious practices protect the ecosystem and contribute to sustainable infrastructure development.
Efficiency and Cost Savings
Efficient earthmoving is synonymous with cost savings. Properly executed earthmoving projects can significantly reduce construction's overall time and expense.
Earthmoving Adelaide experts can quickly and accurately prepare sites using advanced machinery and techniques, minimising delays and avoiding costly mistakes.
Technological Advancements
Earthmoving has seen remarkable technological advancements, making the process more precise and efficient.
Modern equipment, such as GPS-guided machinery and automated grading systems, allows for pinpoint accuracy, reducing human error and enhancing productivity.
These innovations are particularly beneficial in large-scale projects, where every minute and dollar saved can have a substantial impact.
Supporting Urban Development
Urban areas constantly evolve, with new buildings, roads, and public spaces developed to accommodate growing populations.
Earthmoving is a critical part of this urban transformation. In Adelaide, the expertise of earthmoving Adelaide professionals ensures that infrastructure projects are completed on time and within budget, contributing to the city's growth and prosperity.
Community Benefits
The benefits of earthmoving extend beyond construction companies and developers. Well-executed earthmoving projects improve infrastructure that directly impacts the community.
Residents enjoy better roads, safer buildings, and enhanced public spaces. Moreover, the local economy benefits from job creation and increased investment in infrastructure projects.
Conclusion
Earthmoving is much more than just moving dirt. It is a fundamental aspect of infrastructure development that ensures construction projects' safety, stability, and efficiency.
Earthmoving Adelaide experts play a vital role in shaping the city's landscape, supporting urban growth, and fostering sustainable development.
Whether you're planning a small residential project or a large-scale commercial development, the importance of earthmoving cannot be overstated.
By prioritising skilled earthmoving practices, we can build a safer, more prosperous future for our communities.

Meerkats adults spend a lot of time teaching their young how to handle dangerous scorpions, a favorite prey. Photograph By Thomas P. Peschak, National Geographic Image Collection
Why Animal Teachers Are So Rare—And Remarkable
Biologists have a definition for teaching that very few animals actually meet, such as orcas and meerkats. Here are a few more from the head of the class.
— By Brian Handwerk | Published: August 31, 2022
Animals do all kinds of amazing things—and how they learn do to them has long intrigued scientists.
Some knowledge is inherited: Monarch butterflies, for instance, migrate from Mexico to Canada using a roadmap in their genes. Other species mimic skills and behaviors, like a gray wolf cub observing its pack hunt an elk. And still others learn how to survive via trial and error, such as the New Caledonian crows that figured out dropping pebbles into a pitcher raises its water level.
But among non-humans, the true teacher is a rare breed, with only a handful of species, such as some birds, primates, and insects, making the grade.
For a long time, “there was a real resistance to believe that animals teach, because it really is one of the hallmarks of humanity that makes us special,” says Lisa Rapaport, a behavioral ecologist at Clemson University.
Biologists also have created a specific definition of what constitutes an animal teacher: They must change their behavior in front of a student, with no immediate benefit to themselves, and the student must show that they’ve gained knowledge or skills, says Rapaport. Here are notable animal teachers who make sure school is always in session.
When Your Food Bites Back
Meerkats of sub-Saharan Africa live in social “mobs” of up to 30 animals, in which hands-on instruction is part of the job for parents and other adult helpers who collaboratively teach youngsters.
Various species of scorpions are prominent on the meerkat menu, but their deadly sting means they require careful handling. That’s why, at first, parents deliver the arachnids dead to their newborns. As the pups grow, meerkat teachers make their lunch lessons gradually more difficult, such as removing the stingers from live scorpions to render them harmless and letting their young practice dispatching them.
As pups gain skills and confidence handling the scorpions, their teachers bring them gradually more able-bodied scorpions until the pupils have learned to safely remove the stinger and kill prey for themselves.
Though adult meerkats dedicate time to teaching that could be spent on other activities, it works to their advantage. Since many meerkats in a mob are closely related, keeping more of the group safe and alive perpetuates the family genes.
Music Lessons
Taking early learning to the extreme, these Australian birds begin teaching their young before birth. The mother superb fairy-wren sings to her eggs as often as 30 times per hour, exposing the embryos to a secret musical passcode that’s unique to each female. Once out in the world, the hatchlings will use the sound to ask for food from mom and dad, who also learns the tune.
In one study, Sonia Kleindorfer, a biologist at Flinders University in Adelaide, and colleagues swapped eggs between nests of wild birds and found that hatchlings produced the call of the foster mother who sang to them, showing that the young don’t have a genetic understanding of the calls.
There’s a good reason for these singing lessons: Cuckoos often lay eggs in the wrens’ nests so that they can pass off the burden of incubating and raising their own young, a phenomenon called brood parasitism. But cuckoo parents do this too late for their embryos to learn the call, so caring only for young that know the call ensures wrens don’t waste valuable time and food on feeding imposters.
Showing a Friend the Way
When a rock ant finds a new food source or nest site, it leads another ant there with a technique called tandem running. The knowledgeable ant guides the novice along the route, pausing along the way so that the student can memorize each landmark. The teacher relies on feedback from the pupil, which affirms when each lesson is learned; an antenna tap lets the teacher know it’s time to move on.
“The teaching ant gets another individual into the process of agreeing on a much better nest site. This will benefit all of the ants in the colony and help them pass their genes more abundantly into the next generation,” says Nigel Franks, emeritus professor of biology at the University of Bristol in the U.K., who co-authored a study in 2006 documenting the behavior—the first published evidence of a non-human animal teaching another.
Franks is currently experimenting with robot teachers to learn which aspects of ant education are the most crucial for success.
Risky Water Maneuvers
Depending on where they live, killer whales, or orcas, eat very different prey. In Norway, orcas work together to round up schools of herring into dense clusters, then stun the fish with their tails before feasting. In Antarctica, they team up to wash Weddell seals off the ice and into waiting jaws. Scientists believe that in some of these unique situations, parents teach their young to catch prey.
Off Patagonia, for instance, some orcas hunt sea lion pups at the shoreline by intentionally beaching themselves. Adults show the young how to perform this dangerous maneuver well before they even begin hunting, helping to push their students back into the water when needed.
In Alaska waters, orcas have been observed training their young to capture prey in stages, first stunning seabirds with their flukes so that the young can get the hang of handling them and practice their own slapping technique.
These lessons are not only examples of teaching, but also culture, which occurs when a group accumulates social knowledge and passes it on to the next generation, National Geographic Explorer and wildlife photographer Brian Skerry has said.
“They are not only teaching their offspring the skills that they will need to survive, but they're teaching them their ancestral traditions, the things that matter to them.”
Foraging Master Class
Golden lion tamarins of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest must take a master class in foraging that features over 150 different kinds of fruits, insects, tree frogs, lizards, and other prey.
“If you’re a young kid in the forest, where in the heck do you stick your hand to actually find something without being bitten or stung?” says Rapaport, who has studied teaching and learning among tamarins.
That’s why adults use a “come and get it” call that initially attracts young for food handouts, then introduces them to progressively more difficult foraging situations, from recognizing a type of fruit to digging into a tree hole for prey.
“During the period where adults were doing this behavior, the foraging success for prey for kids just skyrocketed, so there’s circumstantial evidence that it was working,” Rapaport says.
Adults were also more likely to offer new foods to their young, she says. “That indicated to me that the adults were paying attention to what the kids did and did not know.”
Rapaport also observed the adults performing what she believes is an incredible trait in non-human teachers: Focusing their energy on those who needed it most.
“We didn’t have the methodology to say unequivocally that they reserved teaching for kids who were slow learners, but that was my impression,” she notes. “I’d love for someone to really look at that in a careful way."

steddie adopting babies! hcs
this was originally steddie adopting a (1) baby but i got carried away<3 hoho
enjoy :D
~~
-they adopt a newborn baby from a teenage mom in Hawkins
-they have their own little house, with a humbly decorated baby room
-eddie wants rock n roll names: for a girl, alice, like alice cooper, and for a boy, ozzy like Osbourne
-steve actually agrees with those names, and compromises to having really lovely, classy middle names, like harriet, elizabeth, adelaide, etc
-steddie take their daughter to the doctors and the doctor asks, “how are her poops” and eddie says “stinky”
-steve smacks him, “very regular doc, usually at night”
-doc asks, “how often does she cry”
-eddie, under his breath, “all the fucking ti-OW”
-steve politely asks eddie to leave

I was going to do a little work tonight, but I’m wiped. I’m going to do this, watch the first episode of White Lotus, and go to bed.
(I’ll probably scroll in bed, too. As is my way. In case you thought I was being responsible.)
Today’s Adelaide exchange was dramatic.
On the way down, a truck shredded its tire right in front of me. I couldn’t avoid running it over. Everything seemed ok, but then my car started making a weird squeaking noise. It happened in the no-man’s-land between Rock Hill and where we exchange, so there really wasn’t a place to stop where I wouldn’t be stranded if I couldn’t get the car going again. I kept driving to the exchange spot, where I discovered that noise was my wheel well liner. It was ripped half off and dangling out beyond my tire, far enough to scrape against the road.
Adelaide’s father offered to help me with it, which was nice. It was too mangled to tuck back in, so he tried removing the bolts to pull off the whole liner. That didn’t work, so he tried cutting it off with a weird tool he had that looked more like pliers. When that didn’t work, he went back to his truck and brought out a knife. He didn’t think that would work, but it cut through like butter. It was so comically easy that we both laughed. I made a comment about how weirdly sharp the knife was and he admitted that his dad had sharpened it and put it in his car ages ago. He’d almost taken it out thinking he’d never need it. Bless my redneck ex-father-in-law. He always was my favorite.
Then that traffic jam on the way back. Dead stop or crawling for miles and miles. It was one of those where someone could’ve gotten out of the car to walk up ahead and investigate and then walked back without the car moving more than a foot or two.
We inched up to a rest area and decided to stop, just in case. It was packed. People were pulling up into the grass because the spots were all full. Line at the vending machine. People milling around or sitting on benches theorizing what sort of disaster was up ahead and asking each other how long they’d been stuck.
There’s a weird sort of camaraderie in those situations. The bonding that happens over shared inconvenience.
I’m exhausted and that wheel well liner is probably going to be expensive, but whatever. It all could’ve been so much worse. I’m home. My car still works. Adelaide is here. My dad let Teddy out, so there weren’t any accidents to clean up. I had a positive interaction with Adelaide’s dad.
I’m going glass half full on today.

Mad Max - A Brighter Future
Chapter One: Golden Haven
It had been little over a month since he had left Furiosa at the Citadel. With the Citadel overthrown, Immortan Joe was dead along with his henchmen, Furiosa and the other women could change that area for the better. Start a new age of progress and equality for the people. But for Max, the road was his home and he intended to stay a nomad.
He had taken a bike fully stocked and headed south. He calculated he had at least covered fifteen hundred kilometers and was somewhere in the vicinity of Adelaide, South Australia. As he traversed the barren land he had crossed paths with a friendly, but cautious caravan.
The people wouldn’t allow him to camp with them, which was fine by him, but they shared some food and water with him. And they gave him some information that sparked his interest. There were people living around Adelaide, not just in small groups, but in cities. Rumor said that these hidden cities consisted of the wealthier people who had been prepared for the fallout.
Not sure where to go next, he made the decision to head out toward Adelaide. One day he decided to make a pitstop and stopped off to take cover near some rock formations. He made a small fire and sat staring into the flames when he heard some rock fall down to the left of him.
Senses heightened, he grabbed his gun and cautiously made his way around the boulder to inspect the noise. Rounding the corner he saw only a desert lizard, scuttling along the rockbed. Clicking the safety back to “on”, he lowered his gun when he heard a voice above him.
“Put your hands up slowly and turn around.” a muffled voice ordered.
He slowly turned and looked up on top of the boulder. The stranger slid down the boulder and landed next to him. His new captor was wearing goggles and a shemagh, so he could not see their face.
“Who are you?” They asked.
He licked his lips, “No one of importance,”
The person cocked their head to the side as they kept the gun level with his head.
“I’ll ask one more time. Who are you, where do you come from?”
He decided to comply. The gun the person held was a desert eagle, 50 action express and would blow his head apart with one shot.
“I’m Max. I’ve come from the north, near The Citadel.”
“Okay, Max. Why don’t you take a load off by the fire. You sit down right there,” the person said, pointing to a spot far from his gear. They in turn sat across from him near his bike.
As they sat, the person kept the gun on him. They brought up their other hand to pull down the shemagh and remove the goggles. Max was shocked that it was a woman. She had dark brown hair and amber colored eyes. She was beautiful. Her skin was fair, no sun blemishes or tanning. She almost looked as untouched as Immortan Joe’s wives had been.
“Do you know anything about this area? Did you come with a purpose?” She asked.
“I heard…rumors.”
“And?”
“That the wealthier people have cities here, underground bunkers, something like that.”
“You know, we normally kill anyone wandering around our home. I’m part of the Regulators. We terminate threats near Haven.”
“Haven?” He asked.
“The name of our city, Golden Haven.”
“So…you’re like a cop?”
“Sure,” she said, nodding.
“I used to be one, in the old days.” He said.
“Really? Oh, my god, we should be friends,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Now take off your clothes.” She added, pulling out another desert eagle as she stood up.
“What?”
“Look, I can either shoot you now. Or I can confirm you aren’t a threat. Which would you prefer?”
Max stood up and began to undress. He pulled his shirt over his head and when he bent to unbuckle his boots she shouted.
“Slowly!”
He paused for a second and did as she instructed. Unlatching the buckles he stood and gingerly pried them off with the back of his heels. Once barefoot he hesitated for a second.
“Everything,” she commanded.
He unzipped and dropped trou. Stepping out of his clothing, he stood to the side with his hands held up at shoulder level. Her eyes trailed down his body as she inspected him.
“Perfect, now turn around and touch your toes,”
Max’s eyes widened. “No, I’m not gonna do that.”
“I was stabbed by a Sand Dog like you last winter. Guess where he was hiding the shiv?”
He sighed, at least it was a gorgeous woman and not a War Boy behind him. He did as he was told, albeit quickly, then stood up and turned around.
“That wasn’t so hard was it?” She said, lowering the guns.
“Can I get dressed now?” He asked.
She gave him a long, slow once over with her amber eyes before nodding with a little smirk on her lips.
Once he was fully clothed again he returned to where she had previously told him to sit.
“You look healthy and in good shape for a Sand Dog. So what I’m going to do is take you to Golden Haven to meet with the Council. If they think you could be useful, you get to live. If not…” She said, not finishing her sentence.
He saw her take a pair of handcuffs out. “Turn around,”
His mind was thinking he could try to over take her when she began to cuff him. But then a part of him was interested in gaining access to this Golden Haven. He turned around and allowed her to cuff him.
“Okay, Max. Let’s go.”

The alluring charm of Henry Cavill - Chapter 7
Summary: It’s time for the final challenge of the Celebrity Project.
Henry Cavill x Adelaide Park (ofc)
Wordcount: 3.9k
Warnings: None
Masterlist // Previous chapter // Next chapter
Our final challenge is going on a survival for three days. I feel like that is something we can actually do, though I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing is right. When the first night falls, I made a fire and even suggested to Henry that we could try and catch a fish tomorrow. ‘You know how to fish?’ he asked me.
Little did he know that I have tons of tricks up my sleeve. ‘Of course,’ I told him, though I think he didn’t believe me and I can’t really blame him for that.
Weirdly enough, we fell into our trusted routines again right away. It made me realize that it doesn’t matter where we are, we can work together just fine wherever we are and we are able to make every place a home.
While he sets up the tent, I warm up in front of the fire, watching him from a distance. During the night, I curl up beside him, my limbs as cold as ice. Before I really fell asleep, I would push up his shirt and place my hand on his bare stomach, my fingers toying with the little hairs. I normally wouldn’t do this, would not be this bold and forward, but with Henry, it all feels so familiar, so safe. Like I can actually do this without being judged.
The first morning we spend together, I made us breakfast, while he folded the tent back into the small bag. It’s nice being with him out in the open like this. Him being surrounded by nature, makes him look so handsome, so normal and approachable.
We run through the woods, we have to do ridiculous things again, that involves trusting one another, yet again eat disgusting things, but I don’t even think about winning that prize. Now, that was never my initial goal to win the prize, but I never thought that I would gain another close friend, someone who is definitely more than that. I like being around Henry, being able to hold his hand when I’m blindfolded. I trust him so much, here and back at our cottage and I know that even outside of the Celebrity Project, I’m going to trust him with my life.
It’s weird being around someone like him. Being around someone that brings out this side of me. Around my parents I’m myself, but I’m the self who I taught me to be. My parents didn’t need a smart ass on top of their worries. My parents needed someone responsible, that would help them out and just do what she is expected to do, though it’s not ideal.
Hiding my feelings became my normal and despite earning a ton of money and not having to worry about anything anymore in life, that normal never changed. I never opened up, I never was myself and I hid everything about myself.
But now I have met this amazing human being, told him about my true self and I know he is going to stay. It’s quite relieving though, not having to bottle up my emotions.
However, after all we were able to handle during this camping trip this far, Henry is now crouched down in front of me, as tears fill my eyes. ‘Does this hurt?’ he asks, after carefully removing my shoe and trying to move my foot, to see what movement is possible and what not.
It feels like he is stabbing a knife through my ankle. ‘Stop, that hurts,’ I whine. As the big fat idiot I am, I misstepped and with the way it swells, I feel like I bruised my ankle pretty bad, especially since it’s swelling already.
‘Stay here,’ Henry says, rummaging through his bag. He hands me a painkiller with a bottle of water, before pulling out a shirt. ‘I’ll be right back.’
‘Where are you going?’ I ask. ‘You promised me that you stay here with me.’
He smiles, before placing his hand on the side of my thigh. ‘I’m just going to the river, so I can improvise an icepack with this shirt, Addy. I’ll be right back.’ He can’t help but chuckle. ‘You can be a big baby, you know that?’
I pout. ‘I know, I’m sorry.’
‘Don’t be, I actually think it’s quite adorable. I’ll be right back.’ His large hand squeezes my upper leg, before he stands up and walks to the little lake, to drench his shirt. I swallow down the painkiller and I pull up my better leg, before I place my head on my knee. I let out a sniffle.
He sits down with me again, carefully taking off my sock and placing the cold wet shirt on my ankle, causing me to shiver. ‘I’m sorry,’ I whisper again.
Henry simply shakes his head, placing a hand on my calf, soothing me a bit. ‘No need to, Addy. Please, don’t feel sorry.’
‘Then what should I do?’
‘Stop crying when there is absolutely no need to,’ he smiles, laying a hand on my cheek, wiping away my tears. ‘Sweet Addy, listen to me. I don’t care about winning. I only care about you and your wellbeing. And right now, I’m going to take care of your ankle and hopefully in twenty minutes you can smile again.’
He grabs the first aid kit out of his backpack and bandages my ankle. When it’s done, he helps me to put on my sock and shoe again. Henry pulls me up, but I can’t seem to distribute my body weight onto both of my feet.
‘Come here,’ Henry says, pulling me into a hug. I place my chin on his chest and smile. I feel so safe, how does he manages to make me feel like this? ‘You hop on my back,’ he says with a smile. ‘So we can continue.’
‘We’re adults,’ I say frowning.
‘I am fully aware of that,’ he chuckles, ‘but that doesn’t mean that you can’t hop on my back.’
I roll my eyes, but I jump on his back anyways. Wrapping my arms and legs around him, I lean with my head against his. He continues to walk, trying to find a spot where we can sleep for the night. I push my nose against his cheek, feeling his five ‘o clock shadow against my skin. ‘Thank you.’
‘You don’t have to thank me every single time I do something for you,’ he says. ‘I like doing things for you.’ He looks to the side and smiles. ‘I like you.’
‘I like you too, Henry Cavill.’
When we finally found a spot, he sets up the tent again, while I have a thicker branch, strapping a knife on it with some rope. I hop around the water, looking right into it. Henry walks over to me and asks: ‘You think that works?’
‘Of course I think that works,’ I say to him.
He sits on a rock, leaning his elbows on his knees, a smug grin on his face. ‘Sorry to break your bubble, Addy, but I don’t think it’s going to work.’
I bite my lip, as I stare into the water again, before sticking the brach and the knife right into it. I hold it up and turn around. ‘Henry, look, look!’ I exclaim.
‘That actually worked?’ he asks, totally flabbergasted.
‘Of course that worked.’ I cock an eyebrow, before I pout. ‘Why did you underestimate me?’
Henry starts to stammer. ‘I… No… I didn’t… Sorry… But… Why are you laughing?’
‘I understand,’ I chuckle. ‘When I was younger, my dad could actually catch a fish with his bare hands. I could never, but we also couldn’t afford a rod. So I did this instead.’
He stands up and holds out his hand. ‘Come on, let’s get dinner started. You know how to prepare a fish?’
‘I do,’ I say, as I limp back to the tent. Henry starts the fire, as I remove its organs and clean the fish with water. When I look up, I see he hasn’t done anything. ‘Henry William Dalgliesh Cavill, you are useless.’ I wipe my hands clean.
‘I am useless?’ he repeats.
‘Don’t act surprised. You haven’t even started the fire, you stupid idiot.’
‘You call me a stupid idiot?’ He walks over to me and why do I feel like that can’t mean any good? I crawl back a little, a mischievous smile on my face. ‘I can’t believe,’ he says, crouching down in front of me, ‘that you called me a stupid idiot.’
‘Henry, what are you doing?’ I ask, leaning back on my hands.
He licks his lips, before he leans over to grab my wrists, causing me to fall back. I let out a squeal, almost thinking that I’m going to fall flat on the back of my head. However, he is always faster and I should’ve known that he would take good care of me. He places his hand on the back of my head, softly guiding me into the grass.
‘Henry,’ I whisper, as he leans on his underarm right next to me, almost as a warning for him not to do something he is going to regret. There are camera’s everywhere.
He places his hand in my waist, after he nodded at me and starts to tickle me.
‘No, Henry,’ I scream, ‘stop it now.’
‘What did you call me?’ he chuckles. ‘I think you called me a stupid idiot. Not just stupid, not just an idiot, but a stupid idiot.’
I try to wiggle out of his grasp, but obviously I fail miserable. ‘You are a stupid idiot,’ I say, tears running over my cheeks from laughing this hard. ‘Stop!’
‘Only if you take it back.’
I try to push his hand away, but yet again, I’m not strong enough. ‘Okay, okay, you are not an idiot.’
Henry halts his tickles, but he is still holding his hand where it was. ‘Then what am I?’ he cockily asks.
I smile, place my hand on his cheek and whisper: ‘You are amazing, Henry. I’m so lucky that you are my partner. I wouldn’t have wanted any other way.’
‘That’s quite romantic, miss Park,’ he chuckles. ‘But you smell like fish and I can’t focus on your lovely words anymore.’
‘Shut up.’ I push my hands in his face and after I use all of my body, he tumbles back, but pulls me with him. ‘You should be thankful that I know exactly how to prepare fish. Otherwise you would be starving.’
He places his hand on the small of my back and says: ‘Go wash your hands, so we can eat.’
◎ ◎ ◎
I have this nightmare a few times every year, where my mom doesn’t survive her car accident and there is nothing I can do to help her. I’m glued to the pavement, unable to catch my mom as she rolls over the car and drops to the ground. I gasp for air when I wake up the next morning, rubbing my eyes. I’m still underneath the sleeping bag, securely pressed against his warm body. I place my chin on his chest, looking at his beautiful face. He is still asleep and it’s actually one of the first and only times I see him sleeping. He is always awake when I wake up. I push my hand underneath his shirt, as I prop up on my elbow. My hand raises up from his happy trail to his chest, placing it on his heart.
The one thing that I like about this tent, is that there are no camera’s. No eyes that watch me. That watch us. I lean in to give him a kiss on his cheek, only for him to turn his face and kiss me right back.
‘You were awake?’
Henry nods. ‘I was, from the second you woke up. You okay, Addy? It seemed like you woke up a bit abrupt.’
‘Just a bit of a nightmare,’ I confess. ‘I have it from time to time. It’s no big deal.’
‘Are you sure?’ he asks.
‘I am.’
He pushes back a strand of hair, letting his thumb linger on my cheek. Henry smiles and I blush. ‘You’re so beautiful,’ he whispers.
‘I look like shit.’
‘Shut up,’ he says. ‘You are beautiful. I like your puffy face in the morning, I like it when you’re hair is all over the place. I like your morning breath.’ He pulls me closer to him and gives me a kiss. ‘Waking up to you is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time.’
‘Shut up.’
He sits up straight and pulls me with him, even grabbing my leg to pull me on his lap. I shiver when the sleeping bag isn’t covering my shoulders anymore and he pulls it up to keep me warm. ‘You think the camera guys are still asleep?’ I ask him.
‘I think so,’ he says. ‘I can’t wait for this to be over. No camera’s, just you and me. Do you have to go to Switzerland right away?’
I shake my head. ‘I was planning on going to LA for a few months, while the movie preparations are getting finalized. Why?’
‘Just wondered if we could spend more time together.’
‘Of course,’ I quickly say, slipping my hands underneath his shirt again. ‘I would love to.’
Henry smiles, bumping his nose against mine.
‘But I was planning on visiting my parents,’ I say. ‘You could come with me if you want, but I get that you think it’s a bit too soon. You know, I don’t actually know about it.’
‘What are your hesitations?’
I sigh deeply. ‘It’s just that I’m a bit scared. My parents were my only friends growing up, the only ones I can count on. It’s not that I’m embarrassed of you, it’s that I’m not used to bringing people home with me. I don’t know if it’s too soon and maybe you think it’s too soon. I mean, I totally get if you’re not ready and—’
‘Okay, wait a minute,’ he says. ‘I’m ready, but only if you are. I would love to see where you grew up, who you grew up with and your relationship with your parents. I want to get to know you even better, at your pace.’
I shake my head, as a chuckle of disbelieve leaves my lips. ‘You are too good to be true, did you know that?’
‘I’m not,’ he whispers, placing a kiss on my lips. ‘What’s with the frown, Addy?’ he asks me, once he looks in my eyes again. ‘Are you okay?’
‘I’m good, I’m good,’ I say. ‘It’s just that I’m infatuated by you, Henry Cavill and it’s scaring me.’
He looks genuinely confused. ‘Why is it scaring you?’ His voice is so soft, so vulnerable.
‘I have never been in love before,’ I say. ‘Have you?’
He nods. ‘I have.’
‘What is that like?’
‘Scary,’ he admits, ‘because you do things that you never expected you would do. You opened up, I showed the entire world that I’m a big softie. And that can be scary, but what I always remember, is that it’s all worth it, because you and I are in this together and in it for the long run.’
‘How romantic,’ I chuckle. ‘It helps to know that you are scared as well.’ I lean in to give him a quick kiss, before I tell him that we should get ready.
The two of us get ready, but I can’t help but to look over my shoulder every now and then. When I first starred on Remembering High School, I had a crush on Jeff, the guy who played Tom, my love interest. However I never pursued any further. I was scared and back then I let fear stop me. Now I’m scared too, but I’m not letting it stop me.
At least I’m trying not to let it stop me. I shouldn’t be thinking about all the possible things that could go wrong, because it is not going to go wrong, right? I clench my jaw when I look at him again.
‘Everything okay?’ he asks me.
‘Just my foot,’ I lie. I sit up straight and smile.
‘You hop on my back in a second,’ he tells me.
Once I’m securely seated on his back, I wrap my arms around his neck.
‘Maybe, Addy, he says, ‘you persuaded me into thinking about auditioning as your love interest.’
‘Really?’ I ask him. ‘Why?’
‘So I don’t have to be away from you again. I don’t ever want to stay away from you and filming with you means being with you.’
I don’t mean to do it, but I simply press a kiss on his cheek. ‘I would love that too.’
We have one challenge and that is to reach the top of the hill, answering questions along the way, hoping that gives us the right clue. I moved from his back, to his neck, sitting on his shoulders as if I’m a child. I run my fingers through his soft curls, leaning forward every now and then, to send him a smile. ‘I like you,’ I say, when he takes a right on the hill again.
‘I like you a lot too, my sweetheart.’ He says it so carelessly, but little does he know that it goes straight to my heart. I never had someone outside my parents who called me nicknames, to show me that they cared about me. Sure, Angela Bassett called me ‘darling’ every now and then and Keanu Reeves called me ‘cheeky cheeks’, but this… This is so sweet…
‘My sweetheart?’ I ask him. ‘How about you are my prince?’
‘Then you should be my queen.’
I can’t help but laugh. ‘But if I am your queen, then you should be my king. Otherwise it’s not fair.’
‘Your king.’ Henry smiles. He turns his head and kisses the inside of my leg. ‘I like the sound of that.’
I’m nearly vomiting, because that kiss sends tingles down my entire body.
‘I think we’re there,’ he says, snapping me out of my thoughts.
The rest of the duos are already there and we have the marvelous task to go down on the zipline, while answering stupid questions. I step back, first one step, then two and all of the sudden I’m a meter or two behind the rest. Is this program desperately trying to make me shit my pants? Was swimming not enough? Was almost being killed in the haunted house not enough?
‘Come here,’ Henry says, holding my hand, preventing me from going any further away. ‘You’ll do fine.’
‘I might be scared of the dark, I might faint when I have to swim, but heights really is my top one fear.’
‘You’ll do fine. How about I go first? It’s only five minutes.’
‘Five minutes?’ I ask, panic gushing through every vessel. ‘Five minutes is two and a half songs, Henry. That’s too much.’
He smiles. Not like he is laughing at me, but more like he is trying to reassure me. ‘I know it is. Promise me, you can watch through the monitor and you’ll be fine.’
Those five minutes were the most straining of my life, even to watch. I put in my in ear and hear Henry’s voice the first thing. ‘You gonna be okay, Addy. It was not that scary.’
‘Yeah, yeah,’ I say, as the man is strapping me in. ‘Is this safe?’ I ask him.
‘Bella, bella,’ the man chuckles, ‘it is safe, promise. Beside, you my favorite actress, I wouldn’t let you die.’
‘Is that supposed to calm me down?’ I ask him, because it is not working. My hands start to shake even more.
‘You are treasure to everyone in Italy,’ he continues. ‘I love your movies, all my friends love your movies.’
I smile. ‘I’m scared,’ I admit.
‘I know, but your man also did it and you seem much tougher than him.’
I place my hand in front of my lips, but I burst out in laughter. ‘I am tougher than my man.’
‘You know I can hear you two?’ Henry says in my ear. ‘But he is right, you are the toughest.’
I get ready and my hands shake as I’m on my stomach in the harness. ‘Are you girls okay?’ Jennifer asks both me and Hailey.
‘Yes ma’am,’ Hailey says.
‘I think I am,’ I answer.
‘Remember,’ we all hear in our in ears. ‘Just a few questions.’
My whistle tone like scream leaves my lips when I’m dropped into the air in my harness. My eyes are closed, when I hear in the question: ‘Okay ladies, ready for the first question?’
‘No!’ I scream, at the same moment as Jennifer and Hailey scream an excited yes.
‘Question one: Which movie did Steven Spielberg win his first Oscar for Best Director?’
‘Schindler’s List,’ I mumble, but it’s loud enough for the others to hear it.
‘That is correct! Question two: What is the capitol of Belarus?’
‘Minsk!’ I scream. ‘Is it over yet?’
I hear Jennifer laugh. ‘Open your eyes, honey,’ she tells me.
‘No, I don’t want to see it.’
Henry chuckles in my in ear. ‘You’re doing great, Addy.’
There is a little bump in the zip line and I think I’m screaming my lungs out. I kind of black out, only being able to answer two more questions, while adrenaline junkies Hailey and Jennifer continue to answer questions and enjoy the few. I know we lost, but all I care about now is not dying.
We come to a pretty abrupt stop and I hear some voices, however I’m not ready to open my eyes. What if I’m still high up there? What if there is something wrong with my zip line? Oh no, I’m gonna die!
‘You can open your eyes again, Addy,’ I hear Henry say and I carefully open one of my eyes. I see it’s him and he smiles at me. ‘You did great.’
‘I’m not dead?’ I ask him, looking around me.
‘You’re not dead, as if I would allow that.’ He helps me out of the harness and I cling onto him like a monkey, hugging him tightly.
‘I’m so sorry I didn’t do great. I know for a fact that we didn’t win. I’m so sorry.’
‘Don’t apologize,’ he says. ‘Besides, you answered four questions. If someone was not doing great, it was me, being distracting by nature.’
I look in his eyes. His face is close, his hot breath against my lips… I shouldn’t do it, I think to myself. I shouldn’t kiss him.
However, when I see him biting his bottom lip, looking more handsome than ever. I can barely contain myself.
I place my hands on his cheeks, my thumbs softly touching his lips.
‘What are you thinking, Addy?’ he asks me with a smile.
I sigh deeply. What does it matter if the world knows that we are in love? Because we are right? We are in love… We had near kiss experiences during this survival trip, he kissed my leg, I kissed his cheek. I lean in, pressing my lips against his, before we open our mouths simultaneously.
Henry wraps his arms even tighter around me, as he deepens the kiss.
‘I am so sorry, Henry,’ I whisper against his hot lips, as mine are on fire.
‘No, don’t you ever be sorry about kissing me.’ He smiles, squeezing my leg. ‘Now come back here, kiss me again.’

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on excavating and earthmoving! In this guide, we will delve deep into the world of excavation and earthmoving, exploring their significance in various industries and providing valuable insights and techniques to aid in these processes.
Excavating Adelaide and earthmoving are essential activities in construction, mining, landscaping, and various other industries, laying the groundwork for many projects. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and understanding needed to carry out these activities efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations.
Section 1: Understanding Excavating and Earthmoving
Excavation and earthmoving are fundamental processes involved in the movement and manipulation of earth, rock, and other materials. Excavating Adelaide refers to the process of removing earth to create cavities, while earthmoving Adelaide involves the transportation and placement of earth and other materials.
These activities are crucial in preparing construction sites, creating foundations for buildings, and shaping landscapes. It is essential to understand and employ proper excavation and earthmoving techniques to ensure the success of various projects. Safety is paramount in these activities, as the use of heavy machinery and the manipulation of large quantities of materials pose inherent risks.
Section 2: Equipment Needed for Excavating and Earthmoving
A wide array of equipment is required for different types of excavating and earthmoving projects. Excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, and trenchers are among the essential machinery used in these processes. Excavators are versatile machines equipped with a bucket, boom, and cab on a rotating platform, making them ideal for digging, material handling, and demolition. Bulldozers are powerful machines with a wide metal blade at the front, used for pushing large quantities of soil, sand, or rubble.
Backhoes combine the functions of a loader and an excavator, making them suitable for a variety of tasks, including digging, trenching, and material handling. Trenchers are specialised machines designed for digging narrow, deep holes for pipelines, cables, and drainage systems. Each piece of equipment serves a specific function, and understanding their capabilities is crucial for efficient and safe operation.
Section 3: Techniques for Efficient Excavating and Earthmoving
Efficient excavation and earthmoving require the application of various techniques to maximise productivity while ensuring safety and precision. One such technique is the use of GPS technology for precision grading and excavation. This technology allows for accurate mapping of the terrain and precise excavation, reducing material wastage and improving efficiency. Additionally, proper planning and site preparation are crucial for efficient excavation and earthmoving.
Clear communication among the project team, adherence to safety protocols, and regular equipment maintenance are also essential for successful outcomes. By employing these techniques, projects can be completed in a timely and cost-effective manner, meeting quality standards and safety requirements.
Section 4: Environmental Considerations
Excavating and earthmoving activities can have significant environmental impacts if not managed carefully. Soil erosion, habitat disruption, and dust generation are among the environmental concerns associated with these processes. It is essential to implement measures to minimise these impacts, such as using erosion control blankets, sediment barriers, and dust suppression techniques.
Additionally, proper disposal of excavated materials and the preservation of natural habitats should be prioritised. By integrating environmental considerations into excavation and earthmoving practices, it is possible to mitigate negative effects and promote sustainability in construction and land development projects.
Section 5: Regulations and Compliance
Regulations, permits, and compliance requirements play a crucial role in governing excavation and earthmoving projects. Local, state, and federal regulations outline specific rules and guidelines for conducting these activities.
Obtaining the necessary permits, adhering to environmental protection laws, and ensuring compliance with safety standards are essential aspects of project planning and execution. Non-compliance can result in legal repercussions, project delays, and negative environmental impacts. It is imperative for individuals and businesses involved in excavation and earthmoving to stay informed about the relevant regulations and uphold compliance to operate within the bounds of the law.

Fic: Points of Contact
PG-13, 2325 words, intended to be a character study but just kind of turned into a pile of fluff and banter? /shrugs
Also on AO3.
As much as she loved a quiet meal at home with her family, Shelagh appreciated their monthly invitations to dinner at Nonnatus House. The little ones were in ecstasy, surrounded by all of their favorite adults, who had no excuses not to play with them. She herself got to enjoy a meal in which she only had to cook one of the dishes, and now that Cyril and Fred were part of the guest list, she knew that Patrick looked forward to a little time with “the lads,” as he was (unfortunately) wont to call them.
She felt a smile blossom across her face as she re-entered the dining area from the kitchen, fresh cup of tea in hand. The others had adjourned to the parlour, where they were waiting for Doctor Who to start. Patrick, Cyril, and Fred had all dragged dining chairs to the far side of the room and were chatting away animatedly, though Cyril kept turning his gaze to the television every so often, clearly not wanting to miss a moment of the show. Sister Monica Joan was on a low stool, no more than a foot of space between her and the screen. Her focus, though, was on the children, who were listening somewhat attentively to her explanation of what to expect from the programme. Violet had had to step out on council business, so Sister Julienne and Phyllis had commandeered the armchairs, leaving the rest of the nuns and nurses to pile onto the sofa or sprawl out on the surrounding floor. Shelagh scanned the space, trying to see where she could squeeze in, when a gesture between Trixie and Sister Frances stopped her cold.
Trixie had perched on the arm of the sofa, one arm draped across Sister Frances’ shoulders. Even that level of public affection was a surprise to Shelagh, who hadn’t realized that Trixie’s comfort with casual, friendly touches extended past her fellow resident midwives, but Sister Frances’ response was the real stunner.
Sister Frances leaned contentedly into Trixie’s loose embrace, tucking her head as best she could onto Trixie’s shoulder and throwing her right arm over one of Trixie’s legs. She showed no fear of being caught doing something improper - indeed, Sister Julienne looked on with a smile as Sister Hilda finished relating an anecdote and the whole sofa burst into laughter.
Shelagh felt her breath catch. She only realized she had been hovering in the doorway a little too long when a concerned “Shelagh?” came from Patrick’s side of the room.
“Forgot to add milk,” she quipped, raising her cup and hoping the laugh she added at the end sounded less forced to everyone else’s ears. She turned and headed back to the kitchen, where she rummaged through the refrigerator with unseeing eyes.
A religious Sister is holy and separate, Sister Adelaide’s voice swam up from her memories. She rejoices and mourns with the community she serves, but she is not of the community. She cannot confuse the comforts of being a sister of man with her higher purpose fulfilling God’s commands with her Sisters in Christ.
Shelagh pressed her lips together wryly as she imagined Sister Adelaide’s reaction to the current display in the parlour. She knew her former instructor in the religious life had since passed on, but she hadn’t realized quite how different the lessons for the newer Sisters would be.
“My love, are you sure you’re all right?” Patrick reached down and took her teacup, setting it on the counter before securing both of her hands in his. “You’re taking an awfully long time to add milk to your already milky tea.”
“Maybe I want the extra calcium,” Shelagh said, smiling up at him. “These old bones could use some shoring up.”
“I’m not even going to respond to that statement, in order to not incriminate myself in the process,” Patrick said with an echoing smile. The love in his eyes still caught Shelagh off-guard, even after years of marriage. “You didn’t answer my question.”
“I’m fine, Patrick,” Shelagh said tenderly. “The times have changed, that’s all. Now, we’d better get back to the parlour before Sister Monica Joan turns all of our children into mystics and Romantic poets.”
Patrick huffed out a laugh. “You know I’m going to ask you to explain what you mean by that first statement later.”
“I will. I just need a little more time to process it for myself first.”
Shelagh noticed the sensation of Patrick’s hand on the small of her back a little more acutely than usual as he guided her back to the party, marking how he removed it once they were properly in mixed company. Later, too, she became aware of how there was always a careful space left for her amongst the women, close enough to ensure she was included, but not so small that she was nudged playfully in the shoulder or brushed by someone crossing their legs to the other side.
The warm weight of her son in her arms at the end of the evening was her anchor. Teddy was dozing off by the time they left, and May and Angela weren’t too far behind. Thankfully, Sister Julienne offered to carry Angela out to their car to keep Patrick or Shelagh from having to make two trips down the stairs.
“Thank you for inviting us to dinner. We always have such a lovely time,” Shelagh said, rocking Teddy as she waited for Patrick to settle May in the back seat of the station wagon.
“The pleasure is all ours, Shelagh,” Sister Julienne said. She reached out and squeezed Shelagh’s arm once, maternally. “You know you’re part of our family. You are always welcome here.”
Shelagh just smiled, unsure of what her voice would do if she tried to respond aloud. By then, Patrick had secured May, so she focused on getting Teddy into the car next without waking him or disturbing the girls. Once all was in order, she and Patrick wished Sister Julienne a good night and waited for her to get back inside safely before they drove off.
In the car, Patrick started to say her name, but Shelagh cut him off by sliding across the bench seat and dropping her head on his shoulder.
“Get us home, Patrick. I’ll explain once we’ve got the children squared away for the night.”
The ride home was quiet, the soft sound of the radio the only real noise as Patrick navigated the streets of Poplar. Shelagh eventually shifted so her hand was resting loosely on Patrick’s above the gear shift, to allow him to manoeuvre the car better, but she stayed close by his side as they unloaded their children and got them in bed, earning a pleased yet confused look from her husband.
“You’re tactile this evening,” he observed mildly, wrapping his arm around her shoulders as they walked down the hall to their own room.
“I’m tactile plenty of evenings,” Shelagh replied, handing Patrick his pyjamas from the wardrobe before fetching her own. “I just don’t always allow myself to act on it.”
“Because of-” Patrick broke off, freeing himself from his vest before continuing, “Because of something I’ve done? Shelagh, I’m so-”
“Not because of you, Patrick,” Shelagh said decisively. “Quite the opposite, in fact. But I’m not explaining while you’re changing - I don’t want you to smother yourself with your own clothing!”
They separated long enough to get their pyjamas on and wash up for the night, giving Shelagh one last moment to collect her thoughts.
“Come here,” Patrick said when she reentered the bedroom, holding his arms open from where he sat on his side of the bed. “If you’re still allowing yourself to be tactile, that is.”
Shelagh slid under the covers and into his arms gratefully. “I’m going to try. I don’t want to display too much affection in public, but...I think I may have been holding myself to old-fashioned standards.”
Patrick just raised an eyebrow, looking down at her with curiosity.
“Tonight, at Nonnatus, I saw Trixie and Sister Frances cuddle up to each other without a second thought, and I didn’t know what to do for a moment,” Shelagh explained. “When I was a Sister, casual physical touch was not encouraged. One was supposed to focus on one’s commitment to God to find sustenance and support. Perhaps after one’s life vows, or at a funeral for another Sister, there could be a quick embrace, but on a typical day, there should be space between one and one’s Sisters on the sofa at recreation, and one should not even think about touching or embracing a layperson unless they were experiencing labor, bereavement, or a medical emergency.”
“Really?” Patrick asked. “I’ve always thought of the Sisters as the most nurturing community presence - but now that you say that, I can’t count many times I’ve seen them actually offer a hug. An encouraging squeeze of the arm, perhaps, or a parcel of food or clothing if it serves.”
“We were expected to love as God loves, of course,” Shelagh said. “But there were ways we could do that while staying ‘holy and separate.’ Or so I was taught.”
“It would appear that whichever Sister was in charge of your lessons isn’t instructing anymore.”
“No, she’s long gone, may she rest in peace. And perhaps this new embrace of - well - embracing others is more of a Nonnatus trend than a result of any teachings from the Mother House. Still, it caught me by surprise tonight.” Shelagh tucked her head into the crook of Patrick’s neck as she finished speaking.
Patrick kissed Shelagh’s temple. “Because you were uncomfortable?”
“Because I was jealous,” Shelagh replied. She closed her eyes briefly to hide her embarrassment at saying so, but when she straightened up and looked at Patrick again, she saw nothing but understanding in his eyes, emboldening her to go on. “I spent ten years of my life keeping my distance from other people, believing it was the right way to show my devotion to God and my vows to Him. Still, I saw every moment I could have hugged a frightened mother and didn’t, or every moment I refrained from comforting one of the resident nurses at Nonnatus. I didn’t even let you hold me in public for the first year of our marriage because I was afraid everyone would think I was so starved for affection that I left the church the first time a man so much as looked at me. And now the Sisters can just casually curl up with the nurses on the couch in the parlour?”
Shelagh couldn’t restrain her frustrated tears any longer. Before the first of them were even finished trickling down her cheeks, she found herself wrapped in Patrick’s arms, her head cradled against his shoulder. He murmured soothing nonsense in her ear, assuring her he was in no rush for her to pull herself back together.
“I’m sorry, Patrick, I got you soaked,” Shelagh said once she was finally able to sit upright again.
Patrick wiped her cheeks with his thumbs. “You’ve done nothing wrong. I see the reasoning behind what you were taught as a Sister, but good intent doesn’t make up for years of you suppressing instincts that are now being supported by that very same institution.”
“Thankfully, I’ve also had years to work on retraining myself,” Shelagh said, a tentative smile on her face. “You’ve been quite helpful there.”
Patrick’s forehead crinkled. “I have?”
“Maybe not in so many words, but you reached for my hand when I was still afraid to name what I was feeling for you. You wrapped me in your coat when I was lost and cold on the road back to Poplar. You’ve held me time and time again as I’ve cried without me having to say a word - not five minutes ago, even! You have shown me that physical affection can be simple, natural, and meaningful, and it doesn’t diminish the quality of our love or our professionalism.”
“And here I thought I was merely capitalizing on my chances to show my devotion to my lovely wife,” Patrick said, squeezing Shelagh’s hands where they lay in his own. “I’ll always be here if and when you reach out, Shelagh.”
“I know, Patrick. I’ve always known that.” Shelagh leaned up to kiss her husband at that. “And I’m going to let myself reach out to you and to our friends more. I don’t want to give people a show, of course, but I’ve barely let myself hold your hand in public out of concern for propriety. I think we’re still within the bounds of good taste if we go a little beyond that, don’t you?”
“I should say so,” Patrick said, pressing another kiss to Shelagh’s smile. “But I could have a hidden agenda.”
“A hidden agenda? I’m not sure what you mean,” Shelagh teased, rolling onto her back and pulling Patrick on top of her.
“Let me explain.” Patrick leaned down and proceeded to illuminate his agenda quite thoroughly, adding a few items to Shelagh’s own in the process. When they had finally finished, Shelagh curled up with her head on Patrick’s chest, feeling sleep begin to claim her.
“Somehow I don’t think I’m going to add any of what we just did to my ideas of what’s appropriate in public,” she murmured, laughing softly. “But I’m happy for some things to remain just for us.”
“There’s a time and a place for everything,” Patrick agreed.
The last thing Shelagh felt before drifting off was a light kiss to her hair, an action she was all too willing to repeat the next morning as they opened up the surgery. The almost comical look of shock on Miss Higgins’ face in result gave her another reason to keep pushing her former boundaries - after all, where else was she going to find this level of amusement?

Would you ever write a fix where Riley actually cheats on Liam?
Heeeyyy, @janezillow! My answer under the cut (and I am STILL extra and unable to answer yes or no). I hope you enjoy it!
The King lay alone in the bed he shared with his wife; he turned his head to glance at the clock. Luminous green numbers told him it was 2am. He exhaled a loud sigh as he crossed his arms behind his head. Riley had been making her way to their bedchambers later and later.
She never said why, but Liam didn’t need her to explain.
He knew.
He sat up and turned on the bedside lamp at the soft click the doorknob made as it was turned. The Queen walked into the dimly lit room, guilt washing across her features as she closed the door behind her.
“Why are you awake?” she demanded.
Liam was silent as he took in her appearance: disheveled hair, smeared lipstick, her blouse untucked from her skirt. She was in her stockinged feet; more than likely, her shoes were on the other side of the door.
Riley had left them there before.
“Riley, you are MY WIFE. You should be in bed with me!”
The Queen rolled her eyes. “I’m here now, aren’t I?”
“It’s the middle of the night!” Liam seethed.
He watched his wife as she removed her clothing. The silk blouse and skirt fell effortlessly from her body. The pantyhose whispered against her smooth legs. His face was impassive, but his thinned lips revealed his anger.
Riley was oblivious to it all. She climbed into bed and turned her back to her husband. “Unclasp my bra for me,” she requested.
She felt the breath from the silent exhale Liam released through his nostrils on her skin. She felt his strong fingers brush her back. She shivered as her flesh goosebumped. When the last hook was undone, she pulled the garment off and tossed it onto the floor.
“I will not stand for this Riley. I mean it,” Liam said as he turned the lamp off.
In the dark, his wife curled onto her side, her back still to him. “You knew what it was when you married me. I love him, Liam.”
Silence as Liam rolled over, his back to Riley. He was still awake long after his wife began softly snoring.
The Following Morning
Liam finished tying his shoes, prepared for a full day: conference calls scheduled all morning, a Royal Council meeting in the afternoon, and a dinner at Krona that evening. He hoped Riley was ready; when he awoke, he was alone in the bed.
Again.
He had smelled her soap and saw the wet tiles in the shower they shared, so he knew she was awake. As he walked the hall to their living area, he sniffed. Nothing. Usually there was coffee percolating, breakfast meats frying.
But not this morning.
Liam walked into the kitchen; it was clean and untouched. He looked around and saw his wife on the sofa, wearing a sleeveless gray cotton nightgown. She was watching television and muttering to herself.
“I’ll be your Little Grey, baby.”
“RILEY!” Liam yelled.
The Queen jumped. “Jesus, Liam!” Her eyes went back to the screen. “My lover is here. You need to leave.”
“THIS IS ENDS RIGHT NOW! Your obsession with Mark Sloan, a FICTIONAL CHARACTER, has gone on long enough!”
Riley’s eyes narrowed. “You TAKE THAT BACK about Mark! And STOP TALKING! You’re ruining the best part of my morning!”
Liam rocked on his heels, his arms folded across his chest. “Where’s breakfast? It’s bad enough you stay out here until all hours of the night falling asleep on the sofa. Now you’re not going to feed me?”
“I DO NOT FALL ASLEEP ON THE SOFA! And we can call down to the kitchens!”
With a smirk, Liam walked over to the sofa, picking up a throw pillow smeared with her lipstick. “You don’t fall asleep out here? How did your lipstick get on this pillow?”
Riley snatched the pillow. “There is NOTHIING on this pillow!” She set it back on the couch, the lipstick-stained side facing the cushions instead of the room.
Liam grabbed Riley by her elbow. “I am going to order breakfast for us while you go get dressed. We have conference calls, a Council meeting, and dinner with Duchess Adelaide today. You need to get ready.”
Riley pouted. “I don’t wanna adult today!”
“Sorry, love. You have to.”
Riley looked at Liam with a crafty gleam in her eye. “I’ll share him with you. IN THE BEDROOM, if we can call out sick.”
Liam rolled his eyes. “Sorry, Mark Sloan doesn’t do it for me.”
“I know Drake’s more your type, BUT … we can watch Addison episodes too!”
Liam shook his head. “Last time I watched Addison, you threatened to cut me and drag my body parts through the streets.”
“But, but … I could have both my husbands; you could have your wife and girlfriend. There could be baklava …” Riley coaxed.
“Or …. we can adult today, cancel the dinner, and have Mark and Addison in the bedroom tonight,” Liam countered.
The Queen considered her King’s offer. Better some Mark Sloan than none at all. She blew a raspberry as she turned off the television. “I want waffles for breakfast,” she grumbled as she headed for the bedroom.
