Plant name survey: progress report
Hello folks, :)
The @gendercensus is going well - and I'm running this plant-name survey on the side, which everyone everywhere is invited to take part in, regardless of your level of interest/expertise in plants.
You can see some statistics about how the survey is going here. For example, here's the graph of the number of people who have taken part per hour since the survey started, for a current total of 264:
Basically, it's an extremely short (<5m) and easy survey about the common names of a particular group of plants, and you don't need to know anything about them to participate, but I am particularly interested in getting as many responses as possible from Jewish people - and I just found out about the #Jumblr hashtag, so I am reposting with that in the hope that it helps a bit! (Also if you know any Jewish people who like doing surveys or who like houseplants, please do share the survey link with them.)
Thank you so much! 🌱🪴
[ Take part in the survey here ]
Edit 2024-07-27: This survey is now closed and you can see the results here!

Just a simple little plant survey to do to help research. From the website itself: "Your participation will help us understand what people find beautiful in plants and why. Especially as climate change affects our environment, it becomes more important how we build and design our gardens and parks."

can anyone tell me why i just thought it would be a good idea to throw myself headlong into a sequence of research & effort that summarizes as "human geography & urban planning historical revisionism" and would require learning how to do a from-the-ground-up redesign of entire metro areas based off of current understanding of the course of technological advancement, finding the oldest topographic data to use, spending hundreds of hours learning to effectively draw/paint semi-realistic architectural & landscape scenes, likely learning 3D modeling whether digital or physical, improving my understanding of building standards/options, and keeping up with emerging technologies.
#i am insane#i have no sense of the commitment it would take#but holy shit#i want to SEE it done#and i doubt anyone else will do it#something something plant a tree twenty years ago#something something the time will pass anyways#but like#where do you even find that kind of data?#i have dug in some deep research holes before#but finding pre-1500's topography surveys#roman empire era geography details?#even i would be out of my depths#let alone the “just learn to draw it” side#i have visual aphantasia#my brain can't see shit#just the void#so any visual art form is incredibly taxing#it's why i struggle to doodle but calligraphy is fine for me#patterns are chill but dynamic reconstruction scares me#and i know i need to practice#learn the basics and drill them#but i feel so worthless when i do that#like all my capacities fail me in that world#hell i have no (real) sense of rhythm but i'd sooner try learning piano than art#but everything i WANT to do requires some artistic capacity#_(:‚‹」∠)_#OP for once

Completely unrelated to what I usually post! I am a business student and am required to plot out 2 separate businesses. this includes creating surveys, and asking for others to fill them in. One of these is a herb business, and the second is a jumping spider business! If anyone could fill either, or both, of these out it'll be greatly appreciated! Herb business

Today at Buffalo Creek Wildlife Preserve
After a long day of counting plants for my masters class project, and my partner doing ecological restoration work, both outdoors, both very sweaty, we decided to kick back and relax after dinner by identifying as many plants at a wildlife preserve as we could.
Before that, here is a list of the animals we saw while looking at the plants:
-Canada Geese
-Mallard ducks
-Swallow (tree?)
-Sparrow (spp. unsure)
-Redwing blackbirds
-Goldfinches
-Snowy egrets
-Great Blue heron
-Sandhill cranes
-Ladybugs* (ladybug larva?)
-Japanese beetle*
-Stinkbug (spp.?)
-Milkweed bug :)
-Monarch butterfly
-Muskrat
-Deer
-Bunnies!
-Little mouse/vole guy
Here is a list of plants (I'll start with the plants I added to iNat and then the other ones from memory); we did not attempt to identify most grasses/sedges/trees, this is mostly prairie plants and is not a complete list of plants in the region. I will include a little "?" for plants that we couldn't 100% determine or were only recommended through iNaturalist, and an asterisk for plants that are not native.
-false sunflower
-wild bergamot
-sawtooth sunflower
-purple prairie clover
-butterfly milkweed
-stiff-leaved goldenrod
-white campion*
-prairie crab apple (?)
-common milkweed
-common yarrow
-hackberry
-cottonwood
-queen anne's lace*
-oxeye daisy
-annual fleabane*
-prairie dock
-wild white indigo
-illinois bundleflower
-red clover*
-virginia mountain mint
-american senna
-rough cocklebur (*?)
-joe-pye weeds
-orange day-lily*
-ironweed
-oak (various)
-white sweetclover*
-yellow sweetclover*
-compass plant
-gray-headed coneflower/yellow coneflower
-purple coneflower
-cut-leaved teasel*
-canada thistle*
-bull thistle*
-birdsfoot trefoil*
-crown vetch*
-reed canary*
-big bluestem
-chicory*
-burdock*
-curly dock*
-cattails (may or may not be native*)
-vervain
-cup plant
-ragweed
-cut-leaved coneflower
-giant ragweed
-dogwood
-dogsbane
-tall goldenrod
-grass-leaved goldenrod
-virginia strawberry
-elm (?)
-prairie rosinweed
-orchard grass (?)*
-timothy grass (?)*
-switchgrass
-redtop
It was nice and late in the afternoon, cloudy, and there was rain forecasted but it didn't come until we were leaving (and even then it was barely drizzling). Overall we saw a lot of plants and animals! :)

guys im so sick of the robot dog hysteria post and theyre less efficient than just letting human cops kill people the way they always have but jsyk in the unlikely event that a cyberpunk fever dream future becomes real boston dynamics doesn't allow guns on those things and will probably use a backdoor to shut them down remotely if they find out you're using them for this. the Unitree robots that you CAN mount guns to without this concern can be shut down with a 433mhz remote, which can be emulated on devices like the flipper zero (there's also a wifi backdoor you can apparently use to take it over entirely). exploits like this will always exist. there is no need to smash machinery you don't like with sledgehammers.
#i believe a 433mhz remote is also used commonly for garage door openers but idk i just read articles#but also you will probably never see one because their real applied use is in chemical plants and mines to survey places humans shouldnt go#more than they have to anyway#that and to impress engineering students at job fairs

Okay Wait I need to test something
Editing for clarity as there's been some confusion in the notes:
If you're allergic to an animal that is respiratory or skin or both depending on what allergic reaction you get. If it happens after ingesting said animal that's food
Medicine falls under other, I am so sorry to all the people allergic to penicillin (&others) I forgot that medicine was a thing that existed
If you're allergic to something in the way all humans are allergic, like poison ivy or mosquitos, then you can hit no
That being said, if you're allergic to a certain plant or medication and it doesn't impact your life because you never interact with it, you're still allergic
Hopefully I addressed everything, more edits may be to come. Thank you all for participating in this incredibly scientific survey

"A Scottish field once home to mono-crop barley has become a pollinator’s paradise after intervention from a local trust saw bumblebee numbers increase 100-fold.
Entitled Rewilding Denmarkfield, and run by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, the project has also seen a sharp increase in the number of species passing through the rolling meadows after they were reclaimed by dozens of wildflower species.
The area north of Perth is about 90 acres in size, and surveys of bumblebees before the project began rarely recorded more than 50. But by 2023, just two years of letting “nature take the lead” that number has topped 4,000, with the number of different bee species doubling.
“This superb variety of plants attracts thousands of pollinators. Many of these plants, such as spear thistle and smooth hawk’s beard, are sometimes branded as ‘weeds’. But they are all native species that are benefiting native wildlife in different ways,” Ecologist Ellie Corsie, who has been managing the project since it began in 2021, said.
“Due to intensive arable farming, with decades of plowing, herbicide, and pesticide use, biodiversity was incredibly low when we started. Wildlife had largely been sanitized from the fields. Rewilding the site has had a remarkable benefit.”
Similar increases have been recorded in the populations of butterflies, with a tripling in the number of these insects seen on average during a ramble through the field.
The numbers of both insects are now so high that Rewilding Denmarkfield offers bee and butterfly safaris to visitors.
Local residents told the Scotsman that on spring and summer days, the field is awash with color, and hums with the sounds of bees and birds. Even as multiple housing developments expand around the Denmarkfield area, the field is a haven for wildlife."

The Investment Gardener
If you want to learn basic/understandable information about what online broker to join, which assets to invest, and how to succeed in the stock market financially, please read this blog post. Print, copy, share, and take notes of my words.
A part of me wishes to beat my head against the wall due to not studying, noting, and teaching myself about the stock market a couple of years ago. Gaining recent knowledge of the stock market has made me realized that I have wasted over a decade in figuring out how to make extra money. Due to my negative consequences, I do not recommend these tasks for you (American or Western man) to…
