WHO IS THANOS?

I knew he was a genocidal maniac, and a Rightwing symbol, especially after seeing trolls repeat, and nauseum, for years that "THANOS WAS RIGHT! THANOS WAS RIGHT!"

But even knowing most characters in Marvel are based on old myths, I didn't dwell on it. Until yesterday, when I saw this:

Wolf imagery. The video posted was full of wolves. That's when I decided to look closer. Playing around with the letters in the name, I first stopped on SONTHA, which is both Hindu and the name of one family from Ayrshire, Scotland.

But then, I tried SONATH, and bingo:

The name Somnath is of Indian origin, specifically from Sanskrit. It is derived from the combination of two words: "Soma," meaning moon, and "Nath," meaning lord or protector. Therefore, Somnath can be interpreted as "Lord of the Moon" or "Protector of the Moon."

BUT SOMNATH IS ALSO THE NAME FOR LORD SHIVA, GOD OF DEATH, DESTRUCTION. AND THE CONQUERER OF TIME.

Thanos is basically a Dropped Letter Cypher.

I spoke with Aeltrileaf about all of this. Well, we had a long discussion. She believed Thanos to be based on Thanatos, the Hindu equivalent of Yama, God of Death:

My personal choice was still Shiva, due to other similarities...the Purple, the Wolves, etc. I did acknowledge that the Hindu and Greek might be related. It's too much of a coincidence that Thanatos is associated with Night and sleep and SOMNATH is too. Aeltrileaf hit on it, saying that Greek is Indo-European, so if you go back far enough, there is overlap. I think at some point, Thanatos got reversed to Somnath, or vice versa.

I've said for a long time, the rule of thumb with these groups is relentlessly advertising who they control, or are associated with, under certain tags.

You know, IF Thanos makes some sort of comeback in the upcoming round of Marvel films, fine. But people should be aware of what inspired him.

Yeah, I really could not stop thinking about the exchange in OP’s post.

There are really only 2 explanations for being an anti-vaxxer, right?

You’re either stupider than a pile of bricks, or you’re a eugenicist, yeah?

If you’re stupid enough not to know or gullible enough to not believe that deadly diseases used to kill a lot of people, that’s one thing.

But I don’t think that’s most people. Most people are actually pretty smart, I think, even if their other traits tend to hide it.

Which leaves eugenics. You know measles kills people, you know Covid kills people, you know mumps and pertussis and whatever else kill people, but you just don’t think it’ll kill you, or your children.

Which is wrong, and dumb, but more importantly - if you know that, and oppose vaccines and other mitigation efforts anyway, then I can only conclude that you’re ok with it killing people who don’t (can’t, can’t afford, don’t have time, can’t access) do whatever the thing is that you think is protecting you and your family.

You feed your kids raw milk or whatever, and you think this will protect them from measles. Lots of children’s, little babies’, parents don’t do this. Are you ok with them dying?

Your kids are vibrant and healthy. You’re sure their natural immune system could fight off Covid. Lots of kids are disabled though. Are you ok with them dying?

Your family says their prayers and goes to services and never sins, and you believe your deity will deliver you from whooping cough. You also believe that it is part of your sacred mission in this life to bring people, who were born as sinners, into the faith, lest they go to hell. Are you ok with them dying and going to hell before you ever even talk to them? Are you ok with their parents dying, just because they didn’t find your deity as compelling as you do?

All of which is to say nothing about how abhorrent it is that all of this nonsense started because people thought it was better for their children to die than to “get” autism.

Unless someone is stupid to a degree that I’m not sure actually exists, then I think the only explanation for this behavior is some degree of eugenicist belief, no? “People who don’t live their lives like I do deserve to die. I don’t owe them anything.” Right?

If your politics stem from, "in a perfect world, disabled people wouldn't have to exist to suffer their disability!" you are just a eugenicist.

So often, people seem to forget that eugenics isn't "being mean," so when eugenics are framed as kindness, compassion, empathy, and as a service done unto the people they are helping (see: eradicating), it isn't seen as eugenics - it's seen as a kindness. In what way would disabled people "not exist" in society if it were "made perfect"? In what way would we be deemed not to be "suffering a life of disability," and how is it measured?

The "kind" eugenicist is still operating with the same tools that the "dyed-in-the-wool" eugenicist uses. The kind eugenicist relies on people taking what they say in good faith, that they actually want to help the people they seek to eliminate.

I think it was a good character writing decision for mark's catalyst to be nolan insulting debbie, but the degrading way nolan talks about humans affects him too. mark is half-human, even if his viltrumite side is the only part of his heritage the characters of invincible acknowledge because nolan does everything he can to foreground it in-universe—declaring that his viltrumite-ness is the most important part of his racial/species background was arbitrary, and that status can be arbitrarily revoked too. mark only asks this once, but what was nolan planning to do if his son had never developed powers, i.e. proven he could grow into a "proper" viltrumite? he would be just another human, and nolan's treatment of debbie shows he has no issue belittling and mistreating even the humans that he's emotionally close to. nolan slaughters unfamiliar humans in front of mark to make a point. he uses mark's body as a weapon to kill humans with for the sake of upsetting him. mark, who is the son of a human just as much as he is the son of a viltrumite. who at the start of the series was less than a year away from being a normal human, the kind of person who his father would at best treat like a thing he possesses and at worst like a bug to squash. does mark feel threatened by nolan's contempt towards his people (the kind of person that mark is)? is that driving him to fight? is mark thinking about that at all, even if it's just subconscious?
