AITA for helping my daughter bond with her dog?

Ever since my (50M) wife passed away a few years ago, it's just been me, my daughter (5F, lets call her N) and the family dog. She's a well behaved child, although unfortunately I haven't been able to spend much time playing with her due to my demanding government job. As a result of this, N has grown very attached to the dog.

For some context, I'm known in my field for having done something no one else could years ago. My job's been putting more and more pressure on me to recreate that success ever since but I've never been able to again, and recently I've been told I'd lose my job if I could not recreate the results. As you can tell, this has been weighing down on me but thankfully my job sent over some teens (lets call them E and A) who needed my help and didn't mind looking after my daughter so I was able to focus more on work. They were getting along really well and got rather close even.

It all came to a head when I found the solution to my problem. My little girl's always wanted to help out her papa and has been begging to recently so I decided, why not? And with her help, I was finally, finally able to recreate the results that would save my job. She and the dog has been invaluable to my 'research' and now they're closer then ever. E and A did not react well to this, even though they should understand the importance of our work more than anyone, and E nearly beat me to death. So tell me, am I really the asshole in this situation for trying to keep my job?

Ukraine just put two key Russian military aircraft out of commission. It will now be more difficult for Russia to direct operations against Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Air Force shot down a Russian A-50M/U intelligence gathering plane – somewhat similar to US Air Force E-3 Sentry (AWACS) aircraft. And it severely damaged an Il-22M11 command and control aircraft which was able to land but is beyond repair.

It’s official. Russian and Ukrainian sources have confirmed that Ukrainian air-defenses on Sunday hit, over southern Ukraine and the Sea of Azov, two of Russia’s rarest and most valuable support planes: a Beriev A-50 radar early-warning plane and an Ilyushin Il-22 airborne command post. “Who did this?” the Ukrainian air force quipped. The answer, it seems, is the air arm’s 90-mile-range Patriot PAC-2 air-defense missiles. The jet-propelled A-50—one of nine A-50M/Us in service—fell into the Sea of Azov in flames, likely killing everyone on board: potentially 15 people including high-ranking officers and highly-trained radar specialists. The propeller-driven Il-22, with up to 10 people aboard, managed to land in Anapa on the Russian side of the Sea of Azov’s southern coast. “Urgently requesting ambulance and fire crew,” the crew radioed as they wrestled their shrapnel-holed plane toward the air base. Photos of the damaged Il-22, snapped after it landed, illustrate the extent of the damage—a mangled tail fin and fuselage—and also reveal the plane’s exact variant. It’s an Il-22M11, and it might be a total write-off. This version of the 1950s-vintage Ilyushin turboprop is rare. The Russian air force has maybe 12 Il-22Ms after mutinous Wagner Group mercenaries shot down one of the planes over western Russia back in June. While the Russians could modify an old Ilyushin airframe into a replacement Il-22M, they probably can’t do so quickly—or cheaply. An A-50 or Il-22M might cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Russia had only about ten of the A-50 planes. One was blown up by Belarusian partisans 11 months ago south of Minsk. And now one is sleeping with the fishes in the Sea of Azov.

aita for getting into a screaming match with a neighbour after he harrassed me for months for being sick?

im gonna start this by saying i dont *think* im the asshole. i more just wanted to share this insane story and maybe get some other points of view on it.

i (22nb) got really sick back in april. like rush to a&e multiple times sick. i tested multiple times but it wasnt covid. it later turns out my cold-like symptoms and my horrendous cough were caused by allergies. it took about 3 months to finally dull it down and feel okay again. i take meds everyday and im still not 100% because the allergen (pollen) persists.

but in this 3-month period of me being sick we found we kept getting knocks on our door. it was our upstairs neighbour (approx 50m). the first time he knocked at 3 in the morning to complain about how my coughing was keeping him awake. he rambled through the door for like 15 minutes about my coughing and demanded we move our bed to the front room so he couldnt hear my coughing anymore.

i, having already been feeling guilty and anxious about being sick because my fiancé (27m) had to take care of me and i lost my job over the situation, decided i was gonna go for a walk. i was really upset and i wanted some fresh air (which at the time i thought would help).

the next morning, the neighbour came down again to inform us that we should keep sleeping in the front room until i recover because he slept so great that night. we informed him that we in fact did not sleep in the front room and i hadnt even been in the flat.

a few days go by and we get another knock at the door. its thankfully daytime and hes talking through the door again. hes demanding that we move into the front room because we are the ones causing the noise disturbance. (once again, i am very sick. paramedics were round at our house 2 days prior to look me over).

we say no to this and he says hes going to get our estate agent to resolve this because we, and i quote, "are being selfish".

a few more days pass and our estate agents inform us that theyre coming to do an inspection. naturally they get here and they want to know my fiancé and i's side of the story. we tell them im very sick and they are very understanding because the neighbour said as much when they put in the noise disturbance complaint. they tell us not to worry and theyll tell the neighbour that hes being silly.

two or three weeks go by and we hear nothing. until one day, whilst my fiancé is at work, he decides to harrass me personally because he knows im home alone. he demands to know exactly what im doing to fix this, tells me how its bothering our other neighbours (who had said nothing to us) and tells me its affecting his quality of life. (i was the one coughing so hard i was vomiting for about two weeks but his quality of life was the one inconvenienced???) in the end, he slinks off back upstairs like usual and i then ring the estate agents to complain about his continued harrassment.

this happens again another time when my fiancé and we start arguing through the door again. it was pretty much like the last few times.

but then, heres where we might be the assholes of the story. after weeks of repeated knocks and lengthy complaints and demands, he knocks again. it was 8am, my fiancé was still sleeping for work. my fiancé woke up to him complaining at me through the door again and lost it. this man was knocking to ask if it was okay to move back into his bedroom because the coughing seemed to have gone down. he wanted us to assure him that i wouldnt get sick again. we opened the door to him for the first time (after giving warning) and got into a screaming match with him. of course in the time it took between giving warning and opening the door, he had scurried upstairs and was yelling at us from there.

i think theres a possibility we are the assholes because the screaming match would have been heard by our downstairs neighbour who was not involved in this at all. we did write him a letter to apologise for this but i still feel kinda shitty about it.

i went back to the estate agents after and reported him again saying if they didnt deal with him, id look into taking legal action for harrassment. its been about a month now and weve heard nothing from him since.

Do I agree with having your kid on the internet? No. Do I think the choice to allow your kid to be seen on the internet is tantamount to using her as a pawn? Also no. Millions of people have their kids on their internet, some to make money, some because they don’t think it’s dangerous/weird, and a million reasons in between. I’m not Kelly and Daniil (who also posts Penelope) or their nanny, I don’t know/judge on that.

Again, do I think Kelly comes across weird? Yes. Do I think that means the internet should fill in the gaps to make her a crazy person? No.

On 29th March 2002, Longannet, Scotland's last deep coal mine, closed, ending centuries of mining tradition.

Longannet was forced to shut after being flooded with 17 million gallons of water, and although no lives were lost, accountants said it could cost £50m to make it operational again. The mine has earned itself a name for being the last deep coal mine to ever be sunk in Scotland.

Located on the north side of the Forth of Firth the Longannet complex, employing 1,500 people at its height and powered the nearby Longannet power station.

The Longannet complex was made of three mines: Bogside, Castlehill and Solsgirth Collieries which formed a single, five-mile long, tunnel.

In March 2002, millions of gallons of water flooded into the underground workings. The 15 people below ground at the time were in another part of the mine and all were evacuated safely.

Shortly after the flooding, Scottish Coal, went into receivership. It became clear that no new operator would take over the mine, and all the pumps were switched off, allowing further flooding. Without access, the true cause of the flooding could not be conclusively determined by the investigation. It was concluded that one of the dams, or the surrounding strata, had probably failed, but the exact reason was not known.

Many people mourned the end of coal mining in Scotland, but it was a hard dirty job for those that mined the "black gold. Coal mining has always been dangerous for the men – and in the early days women and children – who went down the pits. You only have to look through my posts here to find the disasters that blighted the industry, with it's demise we are looking to make more sustainable and cleaner ways to produce our energy needs, and Scotland stands proud at the forefront of that technology, with offshore windfarms and tidal technology e look forward to a cleaner nation to leave for our children, unblighted by the fear some wives and mothers feared when they heard the emergency sirens blare from their local collieries.

Longannet was the last deep mine of any significance in Scotland and its closure effectively ended underground coal mining in Scotland. The Longannet power station closed in 2016.

Summer Lee, a Pennsylvania congresswoman, easily beat back a primary challenge on Tuesday, delivering progressives one of their most significant victories yet of this election cycle as they brace for a wave of pro-Israel funding targeting pro-ceasefire candidates. The Associated Press called the 12th district Democratic primary at 9.21pm, roughly an hour and an half after Pennsylvania polls closed at 8pm ET. Lee defeated local council member Bhavini Patel, who had criticized the progressive “Squad” member over her calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. Patel had pitched herself as a “pro-Biden Democrat”, suggesting she would better support the president’s agenda in Congress.

But Lee waved off that criticism, and she often pointed to the $1.2bn in government funding she delivered for her Pittsburgh-based district over her first term as evidence of her legislative effectiveness. “I am so humbled and proud to win my first primary re-election to be the congresswoman for this incredible district I’ve spent my life fighting for,” Lee said in a statement celebrating her victory. “Our campaign was built on a record of delivering for our democracy, defending our most fundamental rights, and expanding our vision for what is politically possible for our region’s most marginalized communities.” That argument appeared to sway many of Lee’s constituents as well as local Democratic leaders. In February, the Allegheny county Democratic party formally endorsed Lee for the first time, after the group backed her rival in the 2022 primary.

Lee’s 2022 primary made national headlines because of the involvement of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (Aipac). According to OpenSecrets, the Super Pac United Democracy Project, which is affiliated with Aipac, spent a total of $3.3m against Lee in 2022. Machine communication was a mixed bag, to put it politely. Almost every voicebox and speaker had long since been scrapped, even if you had one a not insignificant amount of machines had opted to remove their auditory processors, and most machines weren't exactly conversationalists to begin with. The longest conversation you'd get nowadays was a warning shot, and even that was considered overly verbose.

The V series were an exception to this. While V2 had been equipped with a (long since scrapped) vocal synthesizer, the intended method of communication was a proprietary onboard short range data transmitter. It offered massively more information-dense communication than traditional language, up to 50m transmission range, near-unbreakable interception resistance, and absolutely zero compatibility with even a single other machine.

Neither of them had seriously used the thing in years, but it was built too deep to be safely junked, so they were stuck with it. V2 had long since set it to send a repeating SOS and listen for a reply (as was protocol), while V1 had started to use it as a sort of RAM to store their style meter.

The V series had inbuilt body cameras, of course. While it was hard to believe it nowadays, at one point humanity thought they could control the machines if they could only keep an eye on them. If one went rogue and killed a human, humanity would know.

aita for accidentally shattering the universe?

so a bit of context, i (15M) and my friends (8M, 29M, 18F and 12F) who we'll call F, E, B and H respectively, were trying to stop this guy (50M, let's call him D) from doing something really bad with this crystal. not sure what he was trying to do, but it can't have been good! he's been an enemy of mine for a long time and we always take him down and win! anyways, i tried to break the crystal to stop him from getting it. my friends knew it was a bad idea and told me to stop but i didn't listen and broke it anyway. in doing so i may or may not have accidentally shattered the universe, which i didn't realize until after dimension hopping to 3 different dimensions with different versions of my friends and ending up in the void where this guy (15M? it's complicated.) who isn't exactly a friend of mine or an enemy told me that our home doesn't exist anymore.

i really miss my friends and home and want to get them all back, but if i do that, the other versions of my friends might die. but AITA?

King and Prince William’s estates ‘making millions from charities and public services’

Duchies of Cornwall and Lancaster likely to make at least £50m from leasing land to services such as NHS and schools, according to investigation

King Charles and Prince William’s property empires are taking millions of pounds from cash-strapped charities and public services including the NHS, state schools and prisons, according to a new investigation.

The reports claim the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall, which are exempt from business taxes and used to fund the royals’ lifestyles and philanthropic work, are set to make at least £50m from leasing land to public services. The two duchies hold a total of more than 5,400 leases.

One 15-year deal will see Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS hospital trust in London pay £11.4m to store its fleet of electric ambulances in a warehouse owned by the Duchy of Lancaster, the monarch’s 750-year-old estate.

The king will also make at least £28m from windfarms because the Duchy of Lancaster retains a feudal right to charge for cables crossing the foreshore, according to an investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and the Sunday Times.

William’s Duchy of Cornwall, the hereditary estate of the heir to the throne, has signed a £37m deal to lease Dartmoor prison for 25 years to the Ministry of Justice, which is liable for all repairs despite paying £1.5m a head for a jail empty of prisoners because of high levels of radon gas.

His estate also owns Camelford House, a 1960s tower block on the banks of the Thames, which has brought in at least £22m since 2005 from rents paid by charities and other tenants. Two cancer charities, Marie Curie and Macmillan – of which the king is a longstanding patron – have both recently moved out to smaller premises.

The Duchy of Cornwall has charged the Royal Navy more than £1m to build and use jetties and moor warships. It also charges the army to train on Dartmoor but the Ministry of Defence refused a Freedom of Information Act request asking how much it costs. The duchy also made more than £600,000 from the construction of a fire station and stands to get nearly £600,000 from rental agreements with six state schools.

In spite of the king and Prince William’s speeches and interventions on environmental issues, many residential properties let out by the royal estates are in breach of basic government energy efficiency standards.

InvestigatorsThe investigation found 14% of homes leased by the Duchy of Cornwall and 13% by the Duchy of Lancaster have an energy performance rating of F or G. Since 2020, it has been against the law for landlords to rent out properties that are rated below an E under the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards regulations.

The Duchy of Lancaster said: “Over 87% of all duchy-let properties are rated E or above. The remainder are either awaiting scheduled improvement works or are exempted under UK legislation.”

The royal estates also have deals with mining and quarrying companies.

The investigation has prompted calls for a parliamentary investigation and for the two empires to be folded into the crown estate, which sends its profits to the government. The king and Prince William pay income tax on profits from the estates after business expenses have been deducted, but both now refuse to say how much.

Critics say the estates, the income from which have been used by successive governments to keep the headline cost of the monarchy to the taxpayer down, enjoy a commercial advantage over rivals because they are exempt from corporation tax and capital gains tax.

Baroness Margaret Hodge, a former chair of the Commons public accounts committee, said the duchies should at least pay corporation tax. “This would be a brilliant time for the monarch to say, I’m going to be open, and I want to be treated as fairly as anybody,” she said.

Both duchies said they were commercial operations that complied with statutory requirements to disclose information. They also emphasised their efforts to become greener.

The Duchy of Lancaster said: “His majesty the king voluntarily pays tax on all income received from the duchy.”

If the prenup says Meghan gets $15m in the event of a divorce but Harry is broke and can’t pay her $15m. How does that work? Does he have to pay in installments? Or is the debt cancelled out?

If court is satisfied with proof that Harold doesn't have $15M nor can he pay it, then yes, debt cancelled. 

It's been proven in court repeatedly that family wealth is external and protected in a divorcing. Eg Tessa of Luxemborg tried to argue in court that the Luxemborg royal family is super wealthy and therefore she and the kids should be paid serious money ( $200M) based on ex-husband Prince's Louis's royal family wealth.

The court threw out her case and made clear that his family wealth had nought to do with the Prince even though his married life had been funded and lavishly gilded by that same family wealth.

The Luxemborg royals had the same deal as BRF where members have all the perks and money as long as they remained part of the family. A divorce meant cutting off Tessa. 

In the end she got between £3K - £6K per child per month + education trusts, no house or alimony. 

Similar deal with Fergie and Diana where divorce settlement was predicated on personal wealth of their husbands and not the royal family wealth or trusts.

Fergie got penuts compared to Diana because Andrew's personal wealth was nought. The Queen adored Fergie and Andrew being favourite son meant that exception was made for Bea and E as far as the trusts created for them due to the divorce plus education and day to day living costs ( all this was made public knowledge at the time). I'll also add that Fergie and Andrew didn't want to divorce, but her series of public embarrassments culminating in the public revelation of her 2 affairs ( Steve Wyatt - horse riding photos with Bea therein AND Financial advisor - toe sucking with Bea and E in the pictures) was a red line for the family and their divorce was ordered. No mediation or couples therapy. Andrew begged The Queen to rescind the order, but this is one of the few times she stood her ground and insisted upon the divorce. BUT the way it was handled was very amicable. Fergie kept *her HRH, she briefly moved out, but then moved back in, she continued to attend private royal family affairs including Sandrigham  christmas, but kept out of sight etc. 

*Fergie's HRH was not part of the divorce agreement and for afew months afterwards she was HRH Sarah, duchess of York, BUT Diana voluntarily gave up her own HRH as part of her divorce negotiations because she wanted to cut ALL ties with the royal family. Afew weeks later she was hit with the reality of the lost status of not being HRH and ran to the media to ran a campaign about those mean royals taking her HRH title away and even invoked William in her media games. She hoped the media would bully The Queen into giving it back. Instead, The Queen amended the LP to add that anyone divorcing an HRH automatically lost their own which unfortunately took Fergie's post-divorce HRH too. 

Diana got a better divorce settlement because Charles was personally wealthy unlike his siblings. While he couldn't touch the duchy of Cornwall assets to fund the divorce, he'd built up personal wealth separate from the duchy and that is what he gave Diana in the divorce. He had to borrow cash from The Queen to do it, but he didn't touch duchy assets.

Haya of Dubai was divorcing a man so extremely wealthy that he makes the royals look like paupers in comparison. And the Judge didn't allow her serious money in consideration of his wealth. Frankly, i thought she got very little. 9/10th of her settlement was restricted to security matters as the judge recognised that her Ex is a clear and present danger and she'll need that level of security for rest of her life. Take that sum out of the equation and she barely cleared £50M for herself. 

All this to say that Meghan hoping for royal family settlement on her should she divorce Harry is delusional. 

She'll get a settlement based upon his private wealth and not a penny more. And if it turns out that she has more than him, she'll end up paying him - happens all the time in California divorces eg Halle Berry.

Meghan also has several negatives that mean family won't play gall eg her direct attacks on them, her personality, the bullying report etc
