YEEEEEESSSSSS!!! RESOURCES!!!! THANK YOU!!!
This
instagram
I had to represent the English department of my school on the open day, and this was one of my main points. There were so many parents that looked VERY skeptical when I started talking about the Merchant of Venice being fun, but by the end of my mini speech, some of them actually wanted to get a copy themselves because it's not all "Thou ist meine lover and I shall court you". Portia and Nerissa basically call a guy that tried to flirt with Portia a wino and shit talked all of the lads, and fucked with their husbands heads for the craic

Octocon: A Review and Comparison. (Website link)
I am writing this on the 14th of July 2024, which is just three days after the first public release of the app(on the 11th). So some of the things I bring up here may no longer be reinvent, when it is updated in the future. I've also only just started using it, so there may be stuff I'm unaware of.
I think the 2 biggest advantage of octocon is, first the fact that it functions as jake of all trades, and second the safety features. The app has a companion discord bot, as well as in app journaling. Making it so it has features of simplyplural, pluralkit, and lighthouse all in one. In terms of safety, in addition to options for a pin lock, there are also a quick exit option and a stealth mod option. With quick exit enabled you can double top any unoccupied spot on the app to immediately close the app. The stealth mode being enabled makes it so when the launches it appears as a news app(pictures on the right below), to access the real app just double tap the logo. Also the app having no reference to systemhood or plurality in the name makes it more convert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I could see the app being directly connected to the discord bot as being very useful for systems that split alters often. I know from our experience we often don't really bother with setting up PK profiles for a lot of our system(and doing with tokens every time is also annoying), so having the app and bot linked is useful. The discord bot commands are also more private than PKs.
The app can be used for front and alter tracking, you can also set an alter as primary front if multiple alters are fronting. Also alters in the app are given an ID number which can be changed to organize them, rather it being alphabetical(one of our pet peeves with SP is the fact you can't make organization non alphabetical, I say a host whose name starts with V) The app also lets you make alter folders, which can be used for subsystems among other things. It also let you add friends so they can see who is fronting, much like simplyplural.
There are also several different color options for the app.
As for the journaling, there's both individual alter journals and a journal
Now moving on the things I like less about the app. As a reminder the app just come out and the app will likely be changed in the future.
There is no in app way to edit the info for the system as a whole, this is done via the bot on discord. On a related note system usernames must be between 5 and 16 characters long, which as you might notice is to short for our system name.
The is no dashboard, and no chatting or polls in app, though chatting could still be done on discord with bot. Also there's no browser version.
All alter info is on one tab I could see this getting very crowded. there's less custom field options(not date options for example) and no markdown support(meaning you can't add images and such to bios and the like). There is also currently not wat to achieve alters.
There is no non folder way to represent subsystems in the app, mean there is also no subsystem specific group journals. (Side note lighthouse is very good for keeping track of subsystems, if your system has multiple I recommend you give it a try)
The app's current front history keeping is rather bare bones.
Closing thoughts
For now we are going to continue predominately using simplyplural and pluralkit. Simplyplural for it's better information keeping, and pluralkit do to its prevalence. However I am very excited to see what octocon's future hold and can absolutely understand why some systems would prefer it over alternatives. I am also always glad to see new system resources being created!

Okay, so here's the gist. As a side project, I'll maintain a Rentry of endosafe resource blogs. It will be opt-in only. You can DM me to be added if you make any kind online resources, for accessibility or fun, like emojis, wordmojis, moodboards, stimboards and are pro-endo or discourse free/no stance for your peace of mind.
I will also be adding categories as needed, the current ones are just examples!
I will not be auto adding anyone even if I know they're chill. I don't want to involve anyone in anything without their go-ahead. Anti-endos could use this as a hitlist to find people to harass, and you might be on this list with people you don't like if you elect yourself to be added.
The Rentry will be edited whenever I have the time, and will take a backseat to my personal life and projects, and making emojis for this blog, but I imagine I can make consistent contributions :)
You do not need to be plural to be added, just cool with people who are plural :)

dyslexia friendly comic fonts!
I made some dyslexia-friendly fonts for comics specifically~ They're free to use for whatever you want, but if anyone wants to give me a tip, that would be much appreciated <3 (i'm disabled and cant work, but can't stomach the thought keeping them behind a paywall, just cause they're so desperately needed)
(im not a pro at font making, so there might be kerning issues, but they work well for me~)
You can get them on my ko-fi!

Hey guys, just wanted to share something for my neurodivergent folks who spend the first two hours of a productive day breaking down every thing they wanna get done into small task.
This thing is fucking magic.
You put in your task, like clean bathroom, than tell it how spicy that task is and how much you need to break it down and....
Tumblr media
(this is most spicy level because my brain is just not there today)
Are some subtask still too big? No problem, press the wand again, it breaks them down.
Are some tasks not necessary? Remove them!
Need to switch stuff around? Do it!
This is such a blessing! Holy hell!
Oh and more! If you click the dots, it cn estimate how long each task will approximately take you.
When I heard about this I told all my neurodivergent friends, but I figured it might help some people here as well.

Just found some old pictures of the wands my mum and I made for a Fantastic Beasts event at the college LRC (library) where I used to work.
We made them out of newspaper, toilet roll, PVA glue, acrylic paint, beads and plastic gems, and a glue gun.
These were hidden around the LRC and students would hunt for them every day for about two weeks until they found them all. Those that found them got to take them home and we also had some other activities to promote some of our Harry Potter audiobooks, ebooks and physical books and movies.
Bonus points to whoever spots the atrocious spelling mistake I made on the promotional material. Had to remember where we hid them all so I could break out the tipex
Edit: I Would like to mention as an afterthought, I am in no way in support of She Who Must Not Be Named (aka JK Rowling's) personal opinions regarding trans people. In my opinion she has turned into a vial and loathsome individual who has thoroughly tarnished my love of the fictional world she created. Her actions are pointlessly decisive, and harmful to cis and trans women alike.
Though the fanfic + fanart and the diverse community which created it and enriched that world is still incredibly dear to me. Even though I was never an active member (beyond, reading, giving kudos where it was due and occasionally commenting) I still felt like I was part of a friendly welcoming community full of talented (& not so talented), inspiring individuals.
If you are trans then please know that I support you. What is going down at the moment is utter bull. It might not feel like it sometimes, but people are on your side.

Celia has dyslexia<3 pure self indulgence<3
out of her friends [Elena, Conficcare, Tesoro] she is the least academic and struggles the most with traditional learning. her dyslexia is a pretty strong case, with her massively struggling to read, letters moving around and blurring[morphing? idk how to describe it]. Reading is a headache and her writing also is jumbled and badly spelt. early on her teachers gave up on 'correcting' her handwriting and made her write in block capitals, which somewhat helped.
while Celia struggled to read and write, she has a very good grasp of language, and if text is read verbally to her she will be able to understand, absorb, and deconstruct it. most of her literature knowledge comes from Elena and Tesoro talking about whatever texts they are studying, and eventually the realized that Celia needed to hear it verbally, so they would read out loud and talk though their own analysis of it, subtly helping Celia
in terms of spoken language, Celia is excellent at learning and speaking languages, being multilingual from speaking age [with Spanish & Italian] and over the years picking up on bits of the many other languages spoken in their area with ease, especially skilled in replicating the sounds & accents of those around her. her spoken english spesificaly is behind Tesoro & Elena both [learned to a higher level in school due to being placed in better classes and then Elena learned even more] and Conficcare [learned for its use in the medical field]
[Note: this spesific paragraph about ease of learning languages is not as in line with the 'average' dyslexia, and i hesitate to link it to dyslexia, this is more of a relevant play to say it than saying its linked to dyslexia spesificaly. her struggle with grammar, reading, and writing other languages [as in her own mother tongues] is very much linked to her dyslexia though. she does have an easier time with Spanish due to its phonetic-ness [im not sure how that would apply to Italian] which is why she keeps using it very often and doesn't let that skill degrade over time]
in terms of how it affects her day-to-day, reports are given verbally or read out to her, and Tesoro is there every time paperwork, especially contracts where the nuances of wording really matter, is done. Celia is pretty good with numbers not being affected, but still double checks her own calculations & uses a calculator. her writing is block capitals, as mentioned, and she often has someone else taking notes for her when shes brainstorming.
she has a pair of 'sunglasses' that are actually coloured lenses, [red, im being nice to her so the colour that works best for her matches her colour scheme] that she uses to help her when she cant avoid reading, but those are a pretty recent development.
in an au where she lived she would love the massive selection of audiobooks available atm, but as is she has a pile of audiotapes of book readings, and its why she loves music so much- stories that are entirely verbal and audio based. she does like some of the audiobooks but will always prefer listening to someone else read it out loud [even if she wont admit that she struggles reading]
in a similar vein she listens to the radio a lot, and gets her news that way as oppose to newspapers.
she doesnt tell people she has issues reading and writing- a lot of how she manages it [other people reading things or taking notes for her] can be mistaken for shows of power, her glasses can be read as for the lookTM, so on and so forth. dyslexia is coined in the 1880s but i dont think Celia would have been aware of it being a 'thing'. Conficcare is most likely to know about it [having learned a lot about child development in his nursing course] but he makes the decision not to bring it up as Celia is notoriously touchy about it

Tonight I am frustrated by the fact that I still have a lot of bias to unlearn when it comes to dealing with students with special needs
(As in, it would be nice if I could be effortlessly good at it, but alas)
#Matt has a life#Shit from work#Part of the problem (on top of like... the usual isms) is also that a) I actually *like* the traditional quiet classroom environment#just because quiet and focus is how I learn things best#also: I have limited time to prepare things like dyslexia friendly resources#I mean fortunately there's some stuff that was premade which I'll be able to modify to get started this year#unfortunately my student who probably needs it the most is not in a class where anything is ready so#more work more time needed and my availability is not moving -_-#(will still try i just don't think it'll be the greatest possible thing)#also wrt kids who probably have adhd but no other support: I have a really hard time figuring out what helps them concentrate#apart from what's actually a distraction#case in point: one time one of my students spent the full hour fiddling with paper#with no improvement that I could see in how much attention they paid to the class#and they said 'this was great I was quiet aren't you happy?'#and I was like 'well I won't lie it's convenient for me but also the goam is to help you focus#not to make things convenient'#anyway I think my main tldr is that whime there are things that exist to help these students#and I'm willing to try them#So far my attempts have felt more like randomly chucking stuff at them#(even if I ask them to tell me if they have techniques that help them already)#than anything really helpful#and I haven't figured out yet how to move past that in order to properly make things more accessible for them#(plus like. the one student who is apparently VERY dyslexic#when I asled if there might be underlying cause to their struggles in my class#strongly denied it. which adds to the difficulties)#anyway I feel like this went a little 'woe is me for dealing with this' so like#sorry about that

This thread was my lifeblood when I started my sun sign/dom sign recording since you can actually parse which flight was receiving top dom slot bonuses on a given date, but it hasn't been updated since 2022 and I feel like I am losing my mind because people keep telling me to use that one spreadsheet but the dates are off! Like if I look up "20 August 2023" it says Fire was dominating because of Flameforger's. Flameforger's didn't start until the 27th. The spreadsheet shows the full rankings for the following week, not who was receiving dom bonuses at the time!!!! Everyone is making me feel crazy for finding this inconvenient!!!! What is up with that and also fuck you!!!!!!!

always fun to see reading-teaching discourse bc my experience of learning to read was so far removed from any of the methods ive seen discussed.
to make a long story short, eyesight so bad you cant read a whiteboard (drastic understatement) plus sensory overload problems, auditory processing issues, and genuine misophonia means actual learning in a classroom was essentially just not a thing for me until much later, so the phonics tapes i had to sit through were wasted on me and in fact the overlapping sounds of almost thirty kindergarteners all repeating syllables and sounds slightly out of sync with each other drove my tiny self to the brink of madness and murderous rage. good thing i had already learned to read in a bizarre brute-force method or i wouldve been fucked.
my grand method that i had stumbled into a few years before, was extensively examining (at inches-from-my-face range) a cardboard thing my household had with the uppercase and lowercase letters on it, learning the shapes and which sets went together, getting the names of the letters from my mother, and then annoying whatever adult was around quite a lot by paging through a dictionary, squinting at it from way too close, and going "How do you say this word: L-E-T-T-E-R-S." within the year appended immediately by "No I don't need the meaning just say it." after i painstakingly gained enough words that most of the definitions and sample sentences more or less made sense, and the ones that didnt, i could exhaustively do dives on the words in a definition until i found an synonym that did make sense and work my way back up from there. i would usually check the pronunciation of a given word with a few different adults to bc of differences in their accents.
the effect of this is that for a long time (well into my teens) the natural state of my reading included almost every word read or written being prefaced with a quick internal recitation of its letters, and lacked the 'internal voice' apparently most people 'hear' when they read.
which might sound weird for some people i guess but the end result was fluid enough to get me through multiple books a day so. misophonia wins ig. i have checked out the historical stuff and do agree phonics is the way to go for vast majority of kids and cueing is a crutch that doesnt need to be taught as foundational bc of its flaws. but also bc if someone needs it they will come up with those & related strategies organically.
