It's always interesting to hear about people's weird/unexpected "alternate life paths". Like, something that you could have done with your life, a job you almost took, a school you almost went to, etc - that was still actually realistic enough that it could have happened, but NOW it seems to not suit your current personality.
Like for example, I currently hate advertising (how manipulative it is, brands trying to be 'relatable', social media amplifying it to an obnoxious extreme, etc.) so much that even seeing a little ad before a youtube video is grating to even witness, but there was a point in time where I was genuinely seriously considering going into marketing/making commercials as a career lol. Or like, I have a relative who was very inclined to be a pastor when they were younger, even though today they're a super strong atheist, etc. etc.
#BECAUSE I knew I really liked filming and editing things and doing set design and costume design (from having done little bits of that#here and there in media classes and my own stuff - i used to be a lot more into making videos than I am now). BUT I was always thinking#that a movie is WAAY to big and long. even a short film. So I was trying to think of ways I could still like#have the fun of scouting locations to film and dressing up actors and etc. etc. without it having to be a Huge Million Dollar Production#on tv show or movie level. SO then I was thinking about like... just doing commercials. Or music videos. Like shorter things where I still#get the fun of the filming and everything but it's less of an intensive long term project.#So there is an alternate version of me (I suppose if i somehow did not end up having physical and mental health issues#as badly somehow.. or like.. randomly came into wealth and was able to pay my way through a nice college despite missing#days constantly being out because I'm sick or something lol) that works in some corporate advertising office coming up with commercials#and directing or filming them or doing the sets for them or something in that general vicinity.#I also was considering being a corporate psychologist. or whatever its called.. oh from google:#''Industrial and organizational (I/O) psychologists study and assess individual group and organization dynamics in the workplace''#I don't think I even knew what the job entailed. I was at the time just thinking like.. the type of person that comes into a business offic#and gives everyone personality assessments or does MBTI or big-5 testing crap for whatever reason that some businesses get that#done for people. Really i just wanted to be in a Corporate Big Office setting yet still do psychology. Because I used to be really fixated#on living in a big city. Like the ideas of everything being walkable. picking up a coffee in the morning. walking to my job in a Big#Skyscraper Building. people watching in a huge hotel lobby for lunch. flying frequently (I love airplanes and airports aesthetically).#living in an apartment with a giant window overlooking the city. etc. etc. BUT that was before i had really BEEN to a city. Then I actually#hung around a city a few times and went places and I was like... AUGh... The Sensory Overwhelm.. cars people lights loudness noise scary#everything happening all at once. etc. etc. (though even when I wanted to live in a city i NEVER strove for the Night Life. when i say I#enjoy city imagery I mean like... in the day time. Many people who like cities talk about The Night Life and post pictures of cities all#lit up at night and clubs and dancing and restaurants. none of that EVER appealed to me. perhaps a sign I am not a real city person. Like#I am NOT standing in a crowded bar full of loud people in the middle of the night lol.. get AWAY from me!!) but I do adore the#architecture of like bright white clean sterile modern spaces like huge airport lobbies or malls or etc. I think thats what reminded me of#city and what I liked about the idea of that life. Like I always LOVED the layout of schools and hospitals and trainstations and public#transport in general. Though even then I knew enough that I would not be a good architect/city planner. so I guess my adoration for those#spaces was merely to be channeled into LIVING there. but then I realized I didn't even really want to do that that much. I mean I still#definitely aim to live NEAR a city. like the little areas outside of it. I would never live in a rural place 4 hours from anything. I liter#ally just COULDNT since I need close access to hospitals sometimes lol. But I used to want to live in the CENTER of citites like high rise#condo. and now I'm like.... eh....... perhaps a smaller quieter walkable space nearby lol.. ANYWAY.. alternate me in my Business Suit eheh

::: ::: :::
The bells were ringing again. It was a sound they all dreaded, a sound that dampened the usual cheer of the dawn of a new day.
It was the sound of war.
Will Barret lowered the bow—the bow he’d made from a tree branchand turned to watch as the single rider made his way along the road. A coil of unease slithered inside him, and without a second thought, he leaped through the little woods, towards the farmhouse in the field.
Daniel was already outside, carrying the shovel back into the barn. “Dad!” Will shouted. His father looked up and waved a hand, stopping as he waited.
“Is everything alright?”
He slowed down, panting. “Rider,” he said, letting out a slow breath. “There’s a rider coming.”

This is my AU submission for the Ranger assessment! (More info under the cut)
It’s kinda of a reversal AU, but also not really because about half of it remains the same. It’s also still very rough so I haven’t figured out all the logistics yet.
Morgarath was never defeated. In fact, the original war continued on much longer, with each group taking heavy losses. So much so that it came to a point where a tense truce was offered.
Unfortunately, Morgarath’s advances reached from Gorlan to a shaky line across Araluen. Thus Araluen was split into Duncan’s land and Morgarath’s land (now known as Tenebris).
The erasure of the Ranger Corps did happen. And Crowley did end up uniting the Originals to help Duncan. Unlike in the main timeline, he did it alone.
Halt O’Carrick, once heir to the throne of Dun Kilty, faced the same assassination attempts from his brother Ferris. It was around the third attempt that their father grew extremely ill.
Instead of allowing Ferris to take the throne, Halt was determined to keep his brother’s corruption from spreading. So he stayed. Caitlyn was the first to know. Halt had his own ensemble that was loyal to him, and managed to keep Ferris compliant for the time being. And so when the King died, Halt took the throne.
In this AU, he still met Pritchard and trained with him. His main weapon is still a bow and arrow. He has his own guards practice the weapon as well. For a while, everything went relatively smoothly.
There was no Ranger to save, and Daniel survived. The other two who ransacked his home in the original story (I can’t remember their names) still tried to pull their stunt but were unsuccessful. His wife lived and so did Will. For fifteen years, all was still.
(For reference, I gave them the last name of Barret. Vira is his wife and Will’s mother)
When the war commences once more, Will is forced back into it as well as his father. Will proves to be not so competent in most weaponry and finds himself with the archers.
The rest of the Wards are still in their respective places. As Morgarath plans, Battleschool students, Diplomats, and Scribes are all doing their own part.
Horace is a natural when it comes to swordsmanship, but not when it comes to fitting in. His mother lives alone, and he worries about her every day. Alda, Bryn, and Jerome make his life a living hell every day and he almost wishes he never joined.
Alyss strives to be everything Lady Pauline is. Her family is still gone, and so she did grow up in the Ward with George and a few others. Coincidentally, a popular baker in town frequents Castle Redmont to help with any major events. Her daughter, Jenny, often tags along and spends time with Alyss and George.
Never given the opportunity to choose another path, Gilan is a respected knight in Caraway. He still looks to the Rangers with longing and envy, but he knows it’s far too late to join. And besides, this is what everyone expected of him, right? As the Battlemaster’s son, it’s only natural.
At the start of the AU, Cassandra is placed in Celtica. Which geographically speaking is still weird because I have no idea how she would have made it even with a truce, but I’ll figure it out. The war did start again some time after she had arrived, so there’s that. Madelydd and her get into all sorts of antics and enjoy spending time with one another.
As the war starts, Crowley and Duncan are noticeably concerned about the growing size of Morgarath’s army. They will need more support if they have any hope of winning, but international relationships are not so well off. Fortunately, though small, an army from Hibernia decides to cut in on the decision of one of the six Kings - Halt O’Carrick
And of course, Ferris sees this as the perfect moment to strike. His brother leaves Caitlyn and Ferris in charge, not without sparing a few of his men to keep an eye on his brother. Unfortunately, Ferris has his own loyal followers. If the King were to leave to fight a war and never return, no one would bat an eye, after all.
No one except Caitlyn.
Anyways, that’s all I have for now! Everything will tie together eventually, I just have to figure out how to get there, lol.

I love taking care of people omggg 😍😍😍
#i love when i can go into nurse mode and get people what they need and run through the checklist of what helps#especially if i know the person because then i already have a handle on preferences or what they typically need#i have like. half a degree for a few things and i have a specific interest in physiology and psychology#i also used to really enjoy crisis management and peer support stuff but theres a lot of elements of that i cant do anymore#because the toll that shit takes is more than i can pay#specifically crisis related events#theres a lot I have to work through yet before i can manage those situations#anyway. my dream situation would be to work with someone to help them figure out what they need#like. assess the situation. find resources if needed. check on their ability to address basic daily tasks. make crisis plans.#start some basic dbt conversations and try to figure out what help they need and how to get it#i know some people dont want to go to a traditional psychiatrist or psychologist for whole host of extremely valid reasons#so being able to help them with self help or finding other alternatives. or just like. being a person they can regularly talk and vent to#because sometimes people don't have anyone. and just one person in their life can make a major impact#and like. its not exactly like therapy in that way. like i have the knowledge base to incorporate aspects of it in if wanted/needed#i think some people just need to be heard and that can help them move forward#and my goal isnt to like. transform you or whatever. there are people out there who need help but its hard to start#or it's difficult for them to access what they know they need#and i just want to meet people where theyre at and help them take enough small steps to being able to live how they want#like. harm reduction type shit. if you just need clean needles thats a step forward. and maybe its the only step they feel they need#to be happy. and now they can have a little bit of a safety.#like. a little more agency over how they want to live their life while improving quality of life#a step is a step man#anything that moves you toward the life you want counts#you deserve a win#the edible hit part way through so sorry if theres incomplete and tangential thoughts#also how can i do this shit for profesh??#i know similar jobs exist but theres a huge foundation of shit i just dont agree with built into them

How Are Mobile Loan Apps Changing the Lending Industry?
Introduction
The digital revolution has significantly transformed various industries, and the financial sector is no exception. With the rise of mobile loan apps, obtaining a personal loan has become faster, more accessible, and hassle-free. Traditional lending institutions, such as banks and credit unions, are no longer the sole providers of loans. Instead, mobile-based lending platforms have emerged as strong competitors, offering quick approvals, minimal documentation, and seamless user experiences.
This article explores how mobile loan apps are reshaping the lending landscape, their advantages, challenges, and their long-term impact on the personal loan market.
1. Faster Loan Approvals and Disbursement
Traditional banks often require several days or even weeks to process a personal loan application. Borrowers must submit physical documents, undergo credit checks, and wait for verification. In contrast, mobile loan apps streamline this process by using AI-driven verification systems and digital documentation.
Many mobile loan apps provide instant loan approvals, where users can receive funds within minutes of application submission. This is particularly beneficial for those in need of urgent cash assistance, such as medical emergencies, travel expenses, or unexpected bills.
2. Increased Accessibility for the Unbanked Population
One of the most significant benefits of mobile loan apps is financial inclusion. A large portion of the global population, particularly in developing countries, lacks access to traditional banking services due to stringent requirements. Mobile lending platforms provide loans to individuals without a strong credit history, enabling them to access financial assistance with just a smartphone and an internet connection.
Many mobile loan providers assess creditworthiness based on alternative data sources, such as mobile transactions, utility bill payments, and online shopping history, making personal loans more accessible to underprivileged borrowers.
3. Convenience and Paperless Processing
Gone are the days when borrowers had to visit a bank branch and submit stacks of documents to apply for a personal loan. Mobile loan apps allow users to complete the entire loan application process digitally, eliminating paperwork and reducing the time required for approvals.
Key features of mobile loan apps include:
E-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) Verification
Digital Signature for Agreements
AI-based Document Analysis
These features ensure a hassle-free and paperless borrowing experience, making loan applications more efficient and environmentally friendly.
4. AI and Big Data for Credit Assessment
Traditional banks rely heavily on credit scores issued by bureaus to evaluate a borrower’s eligibility for a personal loan. However, many individuals, especially young professionals and first-time borrowers, may not have an established credit history.
Mobile loan apps leverage AI and Big Data to assess creditworthiness based on various parameters, such as:
Income and Spending Behavior
Social Media Activity
Mobile Recharge and Bill Payment Patterns
Employment Stability
By using alternative credit scoring models, mobile lenders can provide loans to a broader customer base, even those who might not qualify under conventional banking norms.
5. Flexible Loan Amounts and Repayment Options
Unlike traditional banks that have fixed personal loan amounts and rigid repayment terms, mobile loan apps offer flexible borrowing options. Borrowers can choose:
Micro-loans (as low as ₹1,000) for short-term needs
Large personal loans for bigger expenses
Custom repayment tenures based on their financial capacity
Some mobile lenders even provide repayment flexibility, allowing borrowers to opt for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly EMIs, depending on their cash flow and income cycle.
6. Lower Processing Costs and Interest Rates
Since mobile loan apps operate with minimal overhead costs (no physical branches, fewer employees), they can offer lower processing fees and competitive interest rates compared to traditional lenders. Many mobile lenders provide:
Zero processing fees for first-time borrowers
Low or no prepayment penalties
Discounts on timely repayments
Additionally, AI-driven risk assessment allows mobile lenders to categorize borrowers based on risk profiles, offering personalized interest rates that reflect their financial behavior.
7. Better Security and Fraud Prevention
With digital lending comes the concern of data security and fraud. However, mobile loan apps are increasingly integrating blockchain technology, biometric authentication, and AI-driven fraud detection to safeguard user data.
Some key security features include:
End-to-End Encryption to protect sensitive financial information
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for enhanced login security
AI-Powered Fraud Detection to prevent identity theft and false applications
By leveraging these security measures, mobile lenders ensure a safer and more reliable lending ecosystem.
8. Personalized Loan Offers
AI-driven mobile loan apps analyze user data to offer customized loan products. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, borrowers receive loan recommendations tailored to their financial needs and repayment capacity.
For instance:
Freelancers and gig workers can access short-term loans with flexible EMIs.
Students can obtain education loans with minimal documentation.
Salaried employees can get low-interest instant loans with automatic payroll deduction.
This personalized lending approach makes borrowing more efficient and borrower-friendly.
9. Integration with Digital Payments and E-Wallets
Mobile loan apps integrate seamlessly with digital payment platforms, UPI, and e-wallets, making transactions faster and more convenient. Borrowers can:
Receive loan disbursal directly into digital wallets
Make EMI payments via UPI, net banking, or auto-debit
Track loan status and payments in real-time
This seamless integration ensures better loan management and reduces the chances of default due to missed payments.
10. Challenges and Risks of Mobile Loan Apps
Despite their numerous benefits, mobile loan apps also come with certain challenges:
Higher Interest Rates for High-Risk Borrowers – Some mobile lenders charge high interest on loans for individuals with poor credit profiles.
Privacy Concerns – Some apps may collect excessive user data, raising concerns about misuse.
Over-Borrowing Risk – The ease of obtaining instant loans may lead some borrowers into a debt trap.
Regulatory Uncertainties – As digital lending evolves, governments and financial authorities are still working on defining regulatory frameworks for mobile lenders.
To avoid risks, borrowers should choose licensed and reputable mobile loan providers, read terms and conditions carefully, and borrow responsibly.
Conclusion
The rise of mobile loan apps is transforming the personal loan industry by offering faster approvals, enhanced accessibility, lower costs, and better borrower experiences. From AI-powered credit assessments to seamless digital payments, mobile lending is making borrowing more convenient and efficient.
However, as with any financial product, borrowers must exercise caution, compare different lenders, and ensure they are dealing with legitimate platforms to avoid fraud or excessive debt.
With continued technological advancements and increasing regulatory oversight, mobile loan apps are poised to redefine the future of personal loan lending, making financial services more inclusive and borrower-friendly.

Why Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing at Workplaces is a Must for Health and Safety
In today’s fast-paced industries, ensuring the safety, health, and productivity of workers is more critical than ever. Among the many workplace health practices, drug and alcohol testing stands out as a powerful tool to prevent accidents, maintain workplace integrity, and uphold a culture of responsibility. At Audiomet, we believe mandatory drug and alcohol testing isn’t just a policy—it's a proactive step towards creating safer work environments.
But what makes this testing truly essential? Let’s dive in.
Safety First: Reducing Risks and Hazards
A worker under the influence of drugs or alcohol is significantly more likely to cause or be involved in an accident. Whether operating heavy machinery, working at heights, or managing hazardous substances, impaired judgment can have catastrophic consequences—not just for the individual but for their entire team.
Industries where hazardous substances management, chemical management, and dangerous goods management are part of daily operations especially benefit from routine drug and alcohol testing. Ensuring a sober workforce is a key element in reducing workplace incidents and near-misses.
Health Check Foundations: Building a Safer Environment
Mandatory testing programs don’t operate in isolation—they are often part of a broader occupational health and safety strategy. Integrating drug and alcohol testing with routine medical checks, health checks, and occupational hygiene assessments ensures a comprehensive view of a worker's well-being.
Health professionals often recommend combining drug and alcohol screening with other essential evaluations such as:
Spirometry (to assess lung function),
Flu vaccinations and other vaccination services to reduce illness,
Skin checks to identify occupational dermatological conditions,
Audiometric testing and hearing testing to detect early signs of hearing loss.
These services, often delivered on-site, create a complete health profile and help maintain a fit and reliable workforce.
Improving Workplace Culture and Morale
When workers know their safety and health are a priority, it fosters a culture of trust, responsibility, and mutual respect. Mandatory drug and alcohol policies serve as a deterrent for substance misuse and show that the company values its people and their well-being.
This proactive stance aligns perfectly with initiatives such as health and safety management programs, fit testing, and occupational hygiene strategies. It promotes accountability at every level—whether a worker is handling welding fumes, exposed to silica and dust, or working in environments with volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Legal and Regulatory Compliance
In many industries, including construction, mining, transport, and manufacturing, drug and alcohol testing is not just recommended—it’s required. Companies that fail to implement these programs risk non-compliance with occupational health and safety laws, which can result in severe penalties, loss of reputation, and legal liability.
Implementing robust testing is often complemented by regular noise assessments, dust monitoring, VOC monitoring, and vapor and fumes assessments. These environmental checks not only support regulatory compliance but also help in assessing the full spectrum of workplace exposures.
Preventing Long-Term Health Issues
Substance use can exacerbate the risks associated with other workplace hazards. For instance, a worker exposed to chemical vapors while under the influence may suffer more severe health effects. Combining mandatory testing with regular environmental noise assessments and hazardous substances assessments provides a multilayered approach to risk prevention.
This holistic approach is especially important in industries where exposure to welding fumes, silica dust, and hazardous chemicals is common. A strong testing policy ensures that compromised individuals are identified early and can be supported before long-term damage occurs.
Data-Driven Safety: Continuous Improvement
Modern workplace health is about data and trends. Regular occupational hygiene assessments—combined with health metrics from drug and alcohol testing—allow organisations to identify patterns, intervene early, and design better safety protocols. It’s not just about checking boxes; it’s about ongoing improvement.
This strategy is further enhanced by monitoring tools like:
Dust and noise monitoring to assess air and sound quality,
VOC and vapor monitoring for chemical exposure,
Silica and dust assessments to mitigate respiratory risks.
These services, delivered by Audiomet’s team of experienced professionals, contribute to a smarter, safer, and more sustainable workplace.
Final Thoughts: Responsibility Beyond Compliance
Making drug and alcohol testing mandatory sends a clear message: the safety of every worker matters. It’s a commitment to a workplace that values alertness, fitness for duty, and health above all. When integrated with comprehensive health services like audiometric testing, spirometry, flu vaccinations, and occupational hygiene assessments, it creates a strong safety net for all employees.
At Audiomet, we understand that workplace health isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. Our tailored services, ranging from fit testing and noise assessments to chemical and vapor monitoring, are designed to support your safety culture at every level.
Let’s create a safer future—one worker, one policy, one test at a time.

Built for Complexity | How Industrial Estimating Service Handles Custom Manufacturing Projects
Introduction: The Complexity of Custom Manufacturing Projects Custom manufacturing projects are often among the most challenging in the industrial construction sector. Unlike standard builds, these projects involve unique designs, specialized materials, and processes that may not be readily available in off-the-shelf cost databases. Each project brings its own set of variables—often with tight schedules and high demands for precision. This is where industrial estimating services come into play, providing the expertise and tools needed to deliver accurate cost forecasts, no matter how complex the project.
Understanding the Challenges of Custom Manufacturing Custom manufacturing projects typically involve the construction of facilities or systems tailored to specific needs, such as custom machinery, production lines, or specialized storage systems. These projects don’t always fit neatly into predefined categories, which makes estimating their costs particularly tricky. The lack of readily available benchmarks for labor, materials, and equipment means estimators must dig deeper to gather accurate data, assess unique risks, and account for variability in the construction process.
The Role of Industrial Estimating Service in Custom Projects Industrial estimating services play a critical role in ensuring that custom manufacturing projects are properly scoped, budgeted, and executed. Estimators rely on a combination of historical data, industry expertise, and sophisticated estimating tools to account for the unique requirements of each project. They assess design drawings, review material specifications, and factor in the intricacies of the production process to arrive at cost estimates that reflect the project’s true scope and complexity.
Detailed Scope Analysis and Custom Material Costs Custom manufacturing projects often require specialized materials that may not have standard pricing available in cost databases. Estimators take the time to analyze material specifications, identify alternative options, and gather quotes from suppliers to ensure that the cost of materials is accurately reflected in the estimate. They may also assess the long-term costs of certain materials, such as maintenance requirements or supply chain challenges, to provide a more comprehensive financial outlook.
Handling Non-Standard Labor Requirements One of the most significant challenges in custom manufacturing projects is managing labor costs. These projects often require skilled labor or specialized subcontractors with expertise in custom processes or equipment. Industrial estimating services evaluate the labor market, assess wage rates for specific skill sets, and account for the potential need for overtime or specialized training. This ensures that the labor component of the estimate is both realistic and aligned with project requirements.
Accounting for Unique Equipment and Tools Custom projects frequently involve unique or specialized equipment, from advanced machinery to custom-designed tools and fixtures. Estimating these costs is far more complex than simply applying standard equipment rental rates. Estimators must account for the cost of acquiring, maintaining, or leasing such equipment, as well as any potential downtime associated with custom tools. In some cases, they may need to work with equipment manufacturers to determine accurate pricing or cost projections for these items.
Risk Assessment and Contingency Planning The nature of custom manufacturing projects often leads to unforeseen challenges—whether it’s unexpected site conditions, delays in material delivery, or the need for rework due to design changes. Industrial estimating services help mitigate these risks by incorporating contingency allowances into their estimates. They conduct a thorough risk assessment to identify potential challenges that could impact the project’s timeline and budget. By factoring in these uncertainties, they provide a more reliable financial forecast, which helps stakeholders make informed decisions about project feasibility and budgeting.
Timeline Sensitivity and Cost Efficiency In custom manufacturing projects, timelines are often tight, and any delays can significantly impact overall costs. Industrial estimating services evaluate the project schedule in relation to the scope and complexity of the work, considering factors like lead times for custom materials, labor availability, and equipment procurement. They incorporate these time-sensitive factors into their estimates, ensuring that the project is planned efficiently from a cost perspective. By optimizing the timeline and identifying opportunities to streamline construction, estimators help reduce costs and keep the project on track.
Integration of Technology for Enhanced Accuracy To handle the complexities of custom manufacturing projects, industrial estimating services increasingly rely on advanced technology. Software tools and Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms allow estimators to visualize the project in greater detail, integrate different design elements, and identify potential cost-saving opportunities. These tools provide a more accurate picture of the project’s scope, helping estimators refine their forecasts and catch potential issues before construction begins. Additionally, digital tools can analyze historical project data to inform more accurate pricing for custom materials and processes.
The Importance of Communication Between Stakeholders A successful custom manufacturing project requires coordination between various stakeholders, including the design team, contractors, suppliers, and equipment manufacturers. Industrial estimating services ensure that all parties are aligned by providing clear, detailed cost breakdowns and communicating any uncertainties or risks associated with the estimate. This transparency helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that all stakeholders have a clear understanding of the budget and timeline.
Providing Value Engineering Alternatives In custom manufacturing, budget constraints are common, and finding ways to reduce costs without compromising quality is crucial. Industrial estimating services often work closely with the design team to identify value engineering alternatives that can reduce costs. These might include suggesting alternative materials, adjusting the scope of certain features, or proposing changes to construction methods that maintain the integrity of the design while offering cost savings. This value-driven approach helps ensure that custom manufacturing projects are both financially viable and high-quality.
Conclusion: Precision and Flexibility for Custom Manufacturing Success Custom manufacturing projects present unique challenges, but industrial estimating services are equipped to handle the complexity. By leveraging specialized knowledge, advanced technology, and real-time data, estimators ensure that these projects are properly budgeted, efficiently executed, and financially viable. Whether it’s managing specialized materials, labor, equipment, or risk, industrial estimating services help turn custom manufacturing challenges into opportunities for success.

this post is fearmongering. the results of this study are concerning and should definitely be a matter of public discussion, but this is certainly not the conclusion the researchers came to.
the point of the study was to assess the risks of exposure to toxic metals- something one of the co-authors notes are “ubiquitous” fwiw- via menstrual products. Their research confirmed that these metals are indeed present in tampons, but no further conclusions are drawn. it is possible the metal entered into the cotton from the soil, which is a well-known phenomenon; cotton is so good at lifting heavy metals that it has actually been suggested as a part of the solution for revitalizing polluted ground.
the authors conclude with an acknowledgement that the study should be repeated- their sample size was 60 tampons- and a suggestion that further testing ought to be done to indicate whether or not these metals can even leech out of the tampon in the first place, let alone whether or not such leeching could occur at levels deleterious to human health.
there is, in fact, a body of research- too small, for sure, but much larger than this single study- indicating that long-term proper tampon use has no observable negative impact on health. i am grateful and thrilled that more research is being done and i hope that this study is the first of many on this line of questioning, but i am really frustrated at this post and the response it got.
obviously, if this study alters your approach to menstrual health, more power to you. consumers should be informed-risk-takers, and menstrual health is double-obviously a very personal choice. but it definitely wasn't the researchers concluding that you ought to “avoid using tampons at all cost," only this tumblr user did. the lead author of the paper, in fact, specifically says that she hopes people do NOT panic about the results.
(the notes of the post were disappointing. people affirming that they knew they were right to be suspicious of tampons all along, or even recommending alternatives that actually have very little to no research regarding the safety of long-term use, etc. it’s a different conversation, but categorical distrust of tampons is old-school misogyny. you certainly shouldn't wear them if you don’t want to, but there is nothing inherently scary or wrong about them, and people who prefer them are not being reckless or crass.)
((if you're really worried about exposure to heavy metals, you may want to turn a critical eye to fast fashion, as an aside))
