DYING TO SELF

It takes dying to self to truly live. But what does that mean? Dying to self means setting aside what we want at the moment and loving God with our whole being. It means putting others before ourselves.  Dying to self doesn’t mean thinking less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less.  Dying to self means denying our selfish wants and desires. That’s not an easy thing to do. Especially…

Repentance literally means: A change of heart, to turn away, to rid oneself of old ways, to change. When we come to God in prayer and ask Him to forgive us and welcome His Son as our savior, we are literally put our lives on the line. We become divided from our old ways of living, our habits, thoughts, actions, words and deeds are surrendered, we put up our old and become new. We begin to live as He did by example. With things like grace, mercy and forgiveness. Our old attitude should be demolished. Jesus said to pick up our cross and follow Him, His cross was of course, wood, nails and a brutal agonizing death to free us so we could live. Our cross is whatever in life hinders us or holds us back from being the potential new creation He promised us when we admitted we were sinners and came to Him. (Example: addiction, envy, bitterness strife, lying, theft, lust, anger) We must take all these things we use to do and "nail" them to a cross, to kill our old self's and become reborn with new lifestyles and attitudes. Replacing all those things. We no longer look at them. Does this mean we will never slip up? No way! Does it mean we will become perfect? The only one who was and is, is of course Jesus Christ, but if we let the Holy Spirit (Father God, Jesus The Son & the spirit) into our lives daily, they will continually perfect us, into a new way of being. It's like starting out as a seed, being watered until we become beautiful flowers. We must never stop growing. And that is what the true Christian life is.

George Matheson, born 1842, lost his eyesight in his youth, graduated from the University of Edinburgh and became a parish minister and later lecturer.  This hymn is poignant as I think of someone critically ill.
