Prayer 🙏

Father God: thank You for the example of Jesus, who taught us how to surrender our will to Yours. We confess that we often struggle with letting go of our desires and fears. Please grant us the courage to trust You fully, even when the path ahead is difficult or unclear.

Heavenly Father, please forgive us for the times we've insisted on our own way, resisting Your guidance. Help us to bring our hearts honestly before You, and to embrace Your will with faith and obedience. May we find peace in knowing that Your plans are perfect and Your purposes are good.

Teach us to say, "Not our will, but Yours be done," and to surrendering to living it out each day. Let our lives reflect a deep trust in You, bringing glory to Your name and bringing others to Your love.

Romans 9 God's Sovereignty and the Power of Faith

Romans 9 – The Potter and the Clay: Understanding God’s Sovereignty

One of the most profound metaphors in Romans 9 is that of the potter and the clay. Paul uses this imagery to explain God’s absolute authority over His creation. Just as a potter shapes and molds clay into vessels for various purposes, so does God shape and direct the lives of human beings according to His will.

In Romans 9:20-21, Paul writes, “Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?” (KJV). This passage addresses one of the most challenging aspects of theology: the relationship between divine sovereignty and human autonomy.

The potter-clay metaphor emphasizes that God, as the Creator, has the right to determine the purpose of His creation. While we may struggle to understand why God allows certain events or chooses certain individuals, we must remember that He is the sovereign potter, shaping history and lives according to His divine purpose.

This metaphor also speaks to the intimacy of God’s involvement in our lives. Just as a potter carefully crafts each vessel, God is intimately involved in shaping the course of our lives. Every trial, blessing, and challenge is part of His perfect design for our spiritual growth.

Romans 9 challenges believers to embrace a posture of humility before God. We are the clay, not the potter, and our role is to trust that the potter knows what is best. This imagery calls us to surrender our lives to His shaping, allowing Him to mold us for His glory.

The Peace of Submitting to God’s Story | Galatians 6:16

It's all for God. It's his mission, his people, and his glory, not yours.

We are days away from beginning the book of 1 Samuel. So remember to visit our website and secure your copy of the 1 Samuel Scripture Journal. Pick it up so you're fully prepared to dive into this study.

And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.— Galatians 6:16

As Paul closes this letter, he wants the Galatians to know that they don't get to have their way with God's story. It's God's story about Israel. They only get to tell the story as it is. While there are Judaizers who want to modify and adjust it to their liking, God does not like this.

I have often repeated a maxim that echoes this idea. It goes like this: The church is God's people, on God's mission, for God's glory. I repeat this maxim to myself to remind myself, as a leader and other leaders, that God is the only leader. We are merely followers of God even though he might give us the task of shepherding a few sheep in our lifetime.

But as Paul clarifies, this is the best way to walk. It's to walk by this rule because it is the only way to find the peace and mercy we want and need.

Friend, this is the most peaceful way to live life. Let God be God. Live by his rules, and don't make up your own. Are you ready to submit to his rules again?

God, we submit our lives to you today. We remember again that you are telling your story for your glory, not our own. Father, may we follow you all our days and walk in all your ways. Amen.

Throughout the Bible, God had a wonderful habit of using whatever a person possessed if that person would simply yield it to God.

Among many other items, God uses a stick, a coat, a fish, a couple of pennies, a slingshot, a jawbone, a rock, and some loaves of bread.

The Almighty Creator of the universe is able to use any ordinary object that is yield to Him in faith. #itsinyourhands

Stop saying what you don’t have and can’t do, and start with what you do have.

God took what Moses had—a rod (stick)-and filled it with His power. #godofmiracles
