Dvorak user, and yes, I literally switch my layout back to QWERTY or compose a keysmash based on vibes rather than random keypresses when I keysmash. The Dvorak home row is AOEUIDHTNS, which is entirely unconducive to the onomatopoeic keysmashes you get from a QWERTY keyboard.
a moment of silence for Dvorak users trying to appear submissive

there's something so raw about the qwerty keymash (ajdbhvaidlksjhabdils) that the dvorak keymash cannot compare to (aoeinaeohteuaxeoes).
that being said i'm keymashing in shavian from now on (𐑨𐑖𐑩𐑒𐑑𐑛𐑯𐑪𐑛𐑨𐑖𐑿𐑨𐑑𐑯𐑛𐑖𐑒𐑩𐑨𐑪𐑳)

a little over a year ago, i switched to using the dvorak keyboard layout
my typing speed went up from ~100wpm to ~140wpm
I’ve noticed that I can type a little faster if i drink something with caffeine
I wonder how fast I could type if i was high on meth

someone should make a keyboard layout where the first six letters of the top row are DVORAK
just for the sheer memetic confusion potential if it ever catches on
#keyboard#keyboard layout#memery#tbh this legitimately sounds like it could work pretty well#i wonder if anyone's actually done this already#queued for halloween#spooky (kind of)#shitposting (not foone)#very foone themed tho#i love the whole world and all its messed-up folks#<- including me this time#october 31st

*subtly hinting to my friend that i want "him" to go on estrogen* hey yknow it's actually really easy to learn Dvorak keyboard on mobile! you don't need to swap keyboard keys you just use a different layout. just something to think about.

ive decided to switch my phone keyboard to dvorak layout in all contravention of muscle memory. this will not do anything but make my life temporarily harder for myself, permanently more inconvenient for others, and dramatically increase my rate-of-typos. i, for one, can hardly wait to see how it works eut.

it's impossible to revise computer science history as i keep running off to wikipedia to read about everything mentioned. show me the dvorak keyboard layout now. Actually the term "bug" predates the grace hopper anecdote but i forgive you. i have about 500 slides to read but you didn't describe the turing test in depth so now i have to go read about it again. and so on

having never touched an alt layout in my life and also having to use QWERTY at work, should I set up my split keeb (first split, first mechanical) as DVORAK?
additionally, I have the QWERTY version of the crayola keyboard. Once said split keeb gets here, should I switch it to alphabetical?
I'm not really the kind of keyboardist who plays around with alternate layouts (except as jokes, of course), so I can't really help you there.
But yes, you should definitely make the crayola keyboard alphabetical.

the french thing is not a joke btw. AZERTY is a really good layout for testing if keybinds are set up correctly. If your software is not designed to be used on anything but a QWERTY keyboard, you will Find Out with AZERTY.
I mean you can and probably should also try Dvorak, but

I'm at a point in my life where I feel like I'm uncultured and falling behind.
I do listen to classical music sometimes, but it's rarely on a whim, and I don't exactly know many composers. like yeah I like vivaldi's four seasons, but who doesn't? who doesn't know strauss or tchaikovsky? I didn't know who smetana or sibelius were until last week. dvorak was just a keyboard layout to me
I read, but it rarely feels like the kind of thing I should be reading. it's mostly manga, honestly. I feel like the only 28-year-old in the world to have read alice's adventures in wonderland, most of the narnia series, and literally zero other classics. I've never touched dumas or dostoevsky. not even dickens, for god's sake
I feel like I'm running out of time. irrational. probably.
even within my preferred media formats there's so much I'm missing out on. this manga is a must read! they say, this anime is a classic! this video game is groundbreaking! how have you not read it? how have you not watched it? how have you not played it?
what are you wasting your time on?!

re: mirror world
but what about like, your muscle memory for shit like writing and reading and typing. yea you could flip your own pc to something more like what you're used to but you cant do that everywhere. youre at the library trying to search the catalogue and you can type at most 1 word per minute and you cant find your favorite animorphs book
speaking honestly, i think id probably get used to it. id still write with my right hand, theres nothing stopping me from doing that. people already read manga from right to left so that's not an issue, i think. and i could probably get used to a completely different keyboard if i was forced to learn. i mean... think about it. i know the "QWERTY" layout is the most common layout for keyboards, but there are people who use completely different layouts, like "Dvorak" layout. given enough time, id probably be able to pick it up eventually. and thats a small minor inconvenience, at worst
like, thinkin about it, we're very lucky that we live in a world where everyday things we use are symmetrical for the most part. if the world got flipped, i honestly think you wouldnt have too much issue getting back into the groove of everyday life like, truly thinking about it, in this theoretical mirror world, the only thing that would cause major inconveniences is routes you thought you knew are flipped. you'd definitely get more lost than usual. but like i said, thats what Elgoog Maps is for.
#the questions#i actually did think about this theoretical situation long and hard... i think id be fine! life goes on!

Fascinating bit of inner experience. I use the Dvorak keyboard layout. 'p' is next to '.' Frequently, when writing numbers with a decimal, I'll think it (verbally) as (for example), "five point seven". Frequently when I do this, and never otherwise, I'll mistype the '.' as 'p', eg: 5p7.
So I have to hypothesize there's a "mechanism" that translates verbal thoughts into typing, and it can be slightly confused in that translation, and because the p and . keys are physically close together, that confusion results in a typo.
