I love women, oh how I adore women. All and every, I love them all. I love successful smart women who got fucked up by not only overachievers but mainly science assholes who couldn't handle a woman inventing anything. I love Ada Lovelace and Hedy Lamarr. I love feminists and all the women that fought for female right, that fought racists and patriarchs and homophobes and sexists, who made sure that we have the right to vote, to study and to marry whoever we want. I love the suffragettes, Mary Wollstonecraft, Františka Plamínková, Rosa Parks and Milada Horáková. I love female authors who pushed through the wave of misogyny and published their own books and became famous worldwide, influencing masses of people. I love Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, Mary Shelley, Sylvia Plath, Simone de Beauvoir and Margaret Atwood. I love female rulers who managed to reign over a whole country, conquer their enemies and successfully remain on the throne. I love Marie Therese, Elizabeth I, queen Victoria, Catherine the great, Elizabeth II. I love actresses and singers that popularized film and theatre and became role models to many many girls and women, who had to push through years of unfairness and constant sexualization. I love Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie. I love fictional women, from books and movies, who were either powerful or batshit insane or survived the unsurvivable or were the epitome of the devil. I love Medeia, Esther Greenwood, Hermione Granger, Katniss Everdeen and Tashi Duncan. Them and many much more, straight women, cis women, gay women, trans women, happy women, sad women, angry women, miserable women, emotional women, women who are a threat to men and patriarchy and are seen as crazy and insane. I love all women and everything they've accomplished, for how they inspired me.

On May 21st 1424 James I was eventually crowned King at Moot Hill, Scone.I
say eventually because by time his father Robert III died, James was a prisoner of the English, his Uncle, The Duke of Albany quite liked being the ruler, in all but name and was in no hurry to even negotiate to bring his nephew home, and so it took 18 years for his coronation to take place.
James had scores to settle, and here is a wee rundown of the events on and around this day back then.
The 21 of Maij, 1424, K. James the First, with his Queine, Jeane, wer solemly crouned at Scone.
The 26 of this same mounthe, K. James the 1. called a parliament of his estaits at Perth; and one the 9 day of the said parliament, he caussed arrest Murdack, Duck of Albaney, Earle of Fyffe and Menteith, with his 2d sone, Sr Alexander Steuarte, quhom he had knighted the day of his coronatione at Scone, and with them 26 others, viz.
Archbald, Earle of Douglas,
Will: Douglas, Earle of Angus,
George Dumbar, Earle of Marche,
Sr Adam Hepburne of Hailles,
Sr Thomas Hay of Zester,
Valter Halyburtone,
Valter Ogluey,
Dauid Steuarte of Rassythe,
Alex: Settone of Gordon,
Will: Erskyne of Kinoule,
Alex: Earle of Craufurd,
Patrick Ogiluey of Ochterhousse,
Jhone Steuarte of Dundonald,
Dauid Murray of Gaske,
Jo: Steuarte of Cardine,
William, Lord Hay, Grate Constable,
Jo: Scrymgeour of Didope,
Alex: Irwin of Drum,
Herbert Maxwoll of Carlauerock,
Herbert Harries of Terregils,
Androw Gray of Fouills,
Robert Cuninghame of Kilmuers,
Will: Crighton of the same,
Alex: Ramsay of Dalhousey.
This same day he arrest, lykwayes, Sr Johne Montgomerey of the same, and Allane Otterburne, secretarey to the Duck of Albaney; and they too wer releassed within three dayes.
This same zeire, James Steuarte, the Duck of Albaneys youngest sone, quho had escaped the Kings hands wnpprehendit, raisses such forces as he could, burns the toune of Dunbritton, kills Johne Steuarte, (called the Read) of Dundonald, and 32 more, and then, with his fathers old secretarey, Finlaw, Bis: of Argyle, fleis to Irland.
And the following year…..
This zeire, 1425, the Lordes of Montgomery and Kilauers, with Sr Humfrey Cuninghame, are sent by the King with ane armey to beseidge the castell of Kilmauerrin, now Loche Lomond, keipt aganist authority by the partey of James Steuarte, the youngest sone of Murdack, Duck of Albaney.
Justice seems to have been quite slow back then, two years on from his coronation we have…….
The 18 day of Maij, this zeire, 1426, the King adiorned his parliament to Streueling from Perth, till the 24 day of the said mounthe; befor quhom wes accussid Walter Steuart, eldest sone to Murdack, Duck of Albaney, quho receuid sentence of death, and lost his head this same day, befor the castell one a litell rocke; and one the morrow, lykwayes, Murdack, Duck of Albane, with his 2d sone, Alexander Steuarte, and hes father in law, Duncane, Earle of Lennox, being accusid, wer all 4 forfaulted, and condemned to losse ther heades, by an assise of ther peirs. The assierrs wer:-
Walter, Earle of Athole,
Archbald, 3d of that name, E. of Douglas,
Alex: Earle of Ross, Lord of the Iles,
Alex: Steuarte, Earle of Mar,
Will: Douglas, Earle of Angus,
Will: St. Clair, Earle of Orknay,
George Dumbar, Earle of Marche,
James Douglas, Lord Balueney,
Gilbert Hay, Lord of Erole, Grate Constable,
Robert Steuarte, Lord Lorne,
Sr Jo: Montgomerey of the same,
Sr Thomas Somerwaill of the same,
Sr Herbert Harries of Terregills,
James Douglas, L. Dalkeith,
Robert Cuninghame, L. Kilmauers,
Sr Alex: Leuingston of Calender,
Sr Thomas Hay of Locharret,
Sr Will: Borthwick of the same,
Sr Patrick Ogiluey, Shriffe of Angus,
Sr Jo: Forrester of Corstorphin,
Sr Walter Ogiluey of Lintrathen.
By thir assisers they wer forfaulted, and sentenced to losse ther heads; wiche was put to executione one a litle rocke be east Streuelin castle, this same monithe. After wich forfaultrey, the King seassed ther haill estaits in his hands, and caussed, in this same parliament, annex the earledome of Fyffe to the croune.
With all these executions James made enemies and had a busy time quelling rebellions throughout the rest of his reign until……
One the 21 day of Februarij, in the zeire 1437, was the noble King James the 1. killed at the abbey of the Dominicans, in the toune of Perth, by Robert Steuarte and Robert Grhame, at the instigatione of Walter Steuarte, Earle of Athole, his wnckell, in the 13 zeire of his rainge. His corpes wer solemly interrid in a magnificent monument erected by himselue, (quhill he liued,) in his lait foundit monastarey of the Carthusians, in the subvrbs of Perth.
This zeire are the parrcidall traitourts led lyke doges, in halters, to Edinbrughe, quher Walter, Earle of Athole, the cheiffe actor of this woefull tragidey, was tortured one ane ingyne made for the purpois; and with a croune of hote burning irone, was crouned at the crosse of Edinbrugh; and therafter his heart was pulled out of his breast, and rost in a fyre befor his eyes, by the executioner, then cast to the doges to eat; then was his head cutt offe, and hes bodey dewydit in 4 quarters, and sent to the 4 quarters of the realme, and ther hunge vpe one irone gibetts.
Robert Steuart was riuen assunder betuix four horses, and his head sent to Perth, and fixed one ane iron pin aboue the toune gail.
Robert Grhame was tayed with ropes in a cairte, quherin wes a heigh loge of wood, quherone wes nailled that hand that strake the King, with a naile of burning hote iron; the quhole musckells of hes bodey being cut in longe slitts, was fristed with flaming hote irone pincetts, by tuo executioners; and after the lyffe was quyte out of him, his bodey was dewydit in 4 quarters, and erected one gibetts at the end of the 4 most publick wayes of the kingdome; and his head was sett ouer the west port of Edinbrugh.
So although his reign is officially just short of 31 years he actually ruled for around 13 years before his murder, he was 42 years old.

Poor Things.
D: Yorgos Lanthimos (2023).
Poor Things opens with a scandalous premise. A pregnant woman (Emma Stone) commits suicide by jumping off a bridge and is resurrected by surgeon Godwin Baxter (Willem Defoe sporting a Scottish accent and scars worthy of Frankenstein’s monster and looking like he’s in hog heaven) who transfers her unborn child’s mind into her body, through a process that involves wires and lights and screams “Don’t ask us to explain this.” With the help of his perpetually befuddled (and lovestruck) assistant Max (Ramy Youssef) he raises “Bella” as a daughter but also as a social/science experiment. Stone portrays her as a rapidly developing creature of impulse, Id, and unbridled libido, with a curiosity that soon turns into rebellion against 'God’s' attempt to keep her pent up in his home/lab. It’s a tour-de-force comic performance as she moves from a spasmodic toddler to an increasingly rebellious adolescence (the childlike delight on her face when she discovers masturbation, or “working on myself to get happiness” is priceless). After she escapes the lab and runs off with unscrupulous lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo taking caddishness to delirious heights) on a sexual tour of a hilariously flamboyant world that Lanthinos presents as an art-deco theme park, her innocent blitheness about such matters as fidelity, money, and Victorian mores recalls Katherine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby. She’s a screwball Candide.
The film stumbles a little when the now fully-developed but still innocent heroine is presented as a font of wisdom and virtue (and Candide starts to sound too much like Forrest Gump). The movie starts to move from a deliriously tasteless farce into a comedy of manners, and loses too much of its fizz. But at its best it’s like a Masterpiece Theater version of John Waters.

I'm still cranky that my first thought when I heard about the rise of the dark academia aesthetic was "oh! so it's like The Moth Diaries, a 2011 movie that was very aesthetic and sapphic"—and apparently nobody else had that thought.
And then the subculture and its elected canon texts get accused of misogyny because even when the authors are women, the main characters are boys with crushes on Not Like Other Girls girls (if not crushes on other boys) and I'm like dammit internet there's at least one solution to that though and that solution is not only saying we have too many fictional achillean boys, and leaving it at that.
So to cast a wider net of recommendations I've been working through Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay (plus the 1975 film and 2018 miniseries; I love the miniseries, Madeleine Madden is a national treasure), and Down A Dark Hall by Lois Duncan (so much thematic potential that I think it doesn't reach despite a 2011 revision from the 1974 publication, and in 2018 it got a movie adaptation that I would describe as "hit-and-miss"—not necessarily sapphic, but the girls who are friends banding together against the exploitation of girls is a good premise), and Cracks by Sheila Kohler (that gave acknowledgement to the Amy Hempel, high priestess of 20th century literary minimalism!—I did not like this book though, the movie was much better), and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë with an eye for wringing a queer reading out if it while contending with its period-typical colonialist attitudes hashtag classic-lit problems, and The Falling 2014 movie starring Florence Pugh and Maisie Williams (I think I could almost get what it was going for in terms of pathologizing the human stories of girl bereavement being what gets sexuality expressed destructively l—but it was missing something and it lost me).
The Haunting 1963 is the closest I could think that centers sapphic adults (or 1 sapphic adult who is there to research and be smart, also she doesn't die by the end), but that's categorically gothic horror even though they're doing field work research on the house. The Children's Hour 1961, I keep describing as "malicious compliance to the Hays Code" and I submit it to the dark academia cinematic canon. Also apparently Audrey Hepburn deliberately played her character as sapphic in this movie??
I would disqualify Notes on a Scandal by Zoë Heller for not exactly being the aesthetic, but then what gets called an "internet aesthetic" can also become lifestyle/subculture—so reading something that shows the shadow side of the educational system, is, I think, still very much keeping in the spirit of "dark academia".
After all that I still think The Moth Diaries, book and movie adaptation, is the best out of all of them, even though [SPOILERS]compheteverafter/bury[SPOILERS]
...and Cracks 2009 I have complicated thoughts about even though it was a very beautiful movie, spoilers and Discourse About This Book/Movie under the Keep Reading cut-link
because moving the story setting from South Africa to England I think misses an opportunity to get more stories in this genre that aren't North American or European in perspective... but on the other hand Di Radfield gets a redemption arc in the movie that I think the book version of the same character should not get but the movie version of this same character could have as a treat, and as far as "humanizing the sapphic sexual predator" I think the movie version showed really well how Miss G had personal insecurities and passions and how that is still absolutely no excuse for the manipulation and abuse of power she exerted on the students' relationship dynamics and on Fiamma specifically. In the book, I thought it comes off as more like, "of course Miss G groomed and molested those girls; she's butch just look at how very butch she is in every way." I'm glad the movie changed that aspect of the book. And Fiamma Corona's death scene, in the book was very much more horrifying compared to the movie.
hiii how are all the sapphics doing today!? please tell me what you're up to rn, what gay stuff has happened in your life recently, or just the last movie you watched or smth!! i'm sick of feeling like we as a community on tumblr don't talk to each other as much anymore so i'm gonna try and step up and initiate opportunities for it myself!

Alright, it’s OC secret origins time.
The short story for Sascha’s existence in Earth-24 is that Victor was spiraling into self-destructive depression after his parents' deaths and one night got exceptionally drunk and had unprotected sex with a woman who looked enough like Roman in the dark that he thought it might make him feel something.
The longer, more complicated story is that Sascha's mother deliberately set out to get pregnant because she thought having the child of a grieving man who'd just come into a significant inheritance and must be desperate for a familial connection was a way out of an increasingly dangerous life and marriage.
She really could not have anticipated how quickly and thoroughly Victor was demolishing his life and finances.
She obviously didn't end up approaching him. Initially because he'd lost his entire fortune, so it really defeated the purpose. And then after he took up with Roman because that wasn't exactly a stable, safe situation itself. And she did feel guilty by then. She didn't regret it, really, but she at no point pretended it wasn't a pretty shitty, dishonest dick move. But it was what she felt she had to try.
And she loved Sascha. She raised her as well as she could under the circumstances. Her husband was a low-level criminal in Bludhaven, barely scraping by in and constantly under threat of retaliation from his employers for being pretty shit at his job. He never physically abused Sascha or her mother nor did he frequently lose his temper at them, but he refused to recognize the constant danger he was putting them in in his futile pursuit of underworld notoriety, to the point that he began involving Sascha herself in the work.
She kept up-to-date with Victor, just in case. Every few years she'd write a letter she never sent. There was probably never going to be a good time to say, “Hey, I tried to baby trap you a little under a decade ago. Here’s the result.” But her hand was forced when Sascha was targeted for kidnapping. (This part involves the Court of Owls arc of the ‘verse, so I'm still working out the details. But the Court always hated the Zsaszes--for reasons I'll get into in another post--and were more than petty enough to abduct their grandkid to become a Talon.) At any rate, she gives Sascha the letters and tells her where to find her biological father. Sascha comes out of the encounter with the Talons alive and on her way. Her mother and the man who raised her do not. Though Sascha either does not know or is in denial of that for awhile longer.
And that is how Roman finds a goddamned ten-year-old drinking virgin daquiris with Harley Quinn in his goddamned night club.

Katherine Hepburn truly is one of the greats so I had some expectations for Morning Glory. It’s an okay film but I wasn’t exactly blown away. She’s great in it, but overall, the story felt a bit weak and a lot of the characters felt quite flat. Nonetheless, the film received the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Katherine Hepburn, her first of four.

She attended the school near Folkestone in Kent from 1935, after her father abandoned his family, and moved to London. Run by the Rigden sisters, one of whom was a disciple of Isadora Duncan, it was here that Hepburn first began her interest in dance. The large group image raises many questions as to what happened to all her fellow Brownies. Can anyone recognise their relations here and add further identifications to the group in which Audrey appears on the back row at the far right?
