you’d been worried about evan for a while now. 

his lip biting habit was getting completely out of hand. it started as something you barely noticed, just a quick nip here or there when he was deep in thought. but over time, it had become constant. 

stressful situations? he’d gnaw at his lip. awkward silences? there he was, tugging at the tender skin with his teeth. even when he was doing something as mundane as scrolling through his phone, his lips bore the brunt of his absentmindedness.

it was driving you mad. not because it was irritating, though you had half a mind to grab his chin and physically stop him, but because his lips were perpetually red, swollen, and sometimes even cracked.

one particularly bad day, he’d been so lost in thought that his lips had started bleeding. you’d seen it happen from across the room, wincing as he dabbed at the cut with a tissue, looking sheepish when he caught your concerned gaze.

that was the final straw.

the solution came to you in the middle of the night. you’d been lying in bed, scrolling through your favourite online shop, when you stumbled across a set of flavoured lip balms. a lightbulb went off in your head. if evan couldn’t stop biting his lips, maybe you could make it more interesting, and beneficial – for both of you.

the next morning, you arrived at work armed with a plan and your first flavour was honey. sweet, subtle.

evan was sitting at the kitchen table in the station, staring blankly at his phone, his teeth worrying his bottom lip as usual. you’d been watching him for a few minutes, waiting for the perfect moment.

“buck,” you said, pulling the lip balm out of your pocket.

he glanced up, his brow furrowing as he took in your determined expression. “what’s up?”

instead of answering, you twisted the cap off the balm and applied a generous layer to your lips. then, before he could ask any more questions, you leaned over and kissed him.

it wasn’t a long kiss, just enough to transfer the balm, but it left him wide eyed and speechless.

“what are you–”

“fixing your problem,” you said simply, sitting back in your chair.

his fingers brushed over his lips as he stared at you, his cheeks turning pink. “you kissed me.”

“yes, and i’ll do it again if you keep biting your lips.” you smirked, leaning forward on your elbows. “think of it as behaviour modification.”

he blinked, still processing what had just happened. “that’s... definitely one way to go about it.”

“exactly,” you said, popping the cap back on the balm. “now stop biting them. they already look so sore,” you pout.

it didn’t take long for your new routine to become a new kind of habit. every time evan started biting his lips, you’d pull out the balm, apply it to your lips, and kiss him. 

each time, you’d surprise him with a new flavour – vanilla mint one day, strawberry the next, even coconut on a particularly warm afternoon.

at first, he’d get flustered, his cheeks turning red as he stammered out a protest. “you don’t have to–” he’d start, but you’d cut him off with a raised eyebrow and a quick kiss. over time, though, he stopped protesting altogether.

one evening, after a particularly grueling shift, you caught him absentmindedly nibbling at his lips while the two of you were watching a film. without a word, you grabbed the balm from the coffee table and applied it. this time, you used a cinnamon roll flavour. warm, sweet, and comforting.

evan didn’t even hesitate. as soon as you leaned in, his hands found your waist, pulling you closer. the kiss was deeper than usual, slower, more deliberate. you could feel the way his lips softened under yours, the balm working it’s magic. when he pulled back, his lips were shiny, free of any signs of his nervous habit.

“you’re not even trying to stop me anymore,” you teased, brushing a thumb across his cheek.

“why would i?” he replied, his voice low and warm. “best treatment plan i’ve ever had.”

the lip balm kisses became a running joke at the station. the team started noticing how often evan’s lips looked glossy, and when they caught on, you couldn’t stop the teasing.

“hey, buck, what flavour is it today?” chimney asked one morning, leaning against the counter with a knowing grin.

“peach,” evan mumbled, avoiding everyone’s gaze as he rubbed the back of his neck.

“peach?” chimney laughed. “man, you’re whipped.”

evan didn’t deny it. instead, he shot you a soft smile from across the room, and you felt a certain warmth flow through you as you gave him a shy smile in return.

weeks turned into months, and the habit that had once driven you mad now became something you both cherished. you started keeping track of flavours, surprising evan with his favourites and experimenting with new ones.

some nights, he’d pull you into his lap, his hands cradling your face as he kissed you just to guess the flavour.

“chocolate mint?” he’d ask, his voice soft and teasing.

“wrong,” you’d reply with a grin. “it’s mocha.”

“close enough.” he’d kiss you again, and you’d both laugh,

the habit forgotten in the warmth of the moment.

♡ if you withhold from things such as drinking, gambling, swearing, etc. it honestly inspires Altaïr to follow your example and be more diligent in his practices too! He really admires you and the way you go about following your faith.

♡ a part of me feels like Altaïr lives the sort of life where he is a man of faith but he's very busy so it's not often at the forefront of his mind. But he's seen you making wudu and dua and it's really made him dedicate more time to his faith too and he's found that he's feeling much happier in following the example that you set for him, even without meaning to. He just loves you so much and admires so many things about you, he truly believes you bring out the best in him.

♡ Firenze is quite a multicultural city and he's well-travelled so Ezio won't ever judge you. He'll ask you about your practices quite a bit but it's only ever out of curiosity and so that he makes sure he doesn't ever disrespect you by accident.

♡ one of Ezio's ways of showing love is gift-giving so he'll make sure to find places that specialise in pretty and modest clothing so that he can still spoil you all while respecting your way of dressing and your comfort. He also loves cooking for you so he finds substitutes for where he might use alcohol while cooking so that it still tastes good but he's able to make a version without alcohol for you. He doesn't make a very big deal out of it though and just ends up eating the same alcohol-free food as you, it's a silent little way of him loving and respecting you.

♡ he's very intrigued to hear all about your beliefs and practices as well as sharing his with you! He was the one that repaired and renovated the manor so I can 100% see him setting up a prayer room for you. He wants you to have the space that you need and he consults you about it to make sure that everything is in order. He'll try fasting with you if that's something you do! He'll get up before sunrise with you to cook and eat and he'll join you in fasting during daylight too.

♡ running the homestead means that he's a pretty busy guy but he admires the way that you take time out of your day for religious practices and it makes him realise he should probably take a page out of your book and slow down every once in a while too so that he can partake in his own practices as well. He'll always provide you with whatever you need, you mean the world to him and he wants you to be well physically, mentally and spiritually.

♡ like Connor, he also renovates the place a little to make sure you have a prayer room because he wants you to know that he respects you and he'll always make room for you in his life - emotionally and physically. Also like Ezio, he'll find some substitute flavour for alcohol when cooking so that he can respect your beliefs. He even arranges for a new line of the café's sweets that don't include alcohol so that you have a full pick of the menu when the two of you spend time watching performances over treats and coffee together.

♡ Arno is absolutely a fashionista and I won't be convinced otherwise. He gets into learning about modest fashion so that he can still treat you with new clothes the way he thinks any man should do for his lady. Considering the time period, I'd say that a lot of his sources come from places like Morocco so he's likely bought you a kaftan or a few considering how the french ladies were rather fascinated with this fashion at the time.

♡ like with Ezio, Jacob's city had opened up to become a very multicultural place so he doesn't really bat an eye at you having a different faith to him. (I honestly headcanon that Jacob was likely baptised under the anglican church but he's not really a big believer, he focuses more on this life than the next). He does ask you questions out of curiosity though and because he wants to make sure he won't say something disrespectful out of a lack of understanding.

♡ he's watches you pray a few times just out of a simple fascination and curiosity. He once interrupted you making wudu because he didn't know what you were doing but he was quick to apologise and let you continue without interruption once you explained to him - he ended up buying you some flowers to say sorry because he felt really bad for having interrupted something that he knows is so important to you.

Life and More

been quite a long amount of time since i have written a blog post. currently i am light headed and weak because i have found out that dua lipa and callum turner are engaged. i am not certain i will survive the night. anywho! today is Boxing Day! i went skating with my dear friend f, and because my brother is not using his car, i drove to the rink and then we went to tims together. im back home. i hate it. i feel so empty and awful. my mom keeps crying but idc i just want her to see that being home makes me want to die. other than that, i have been doing really well these days. been taking care of myself.

went clubbing a week ago. it was great fun i think. felt awful the next day. i think im going clubbing the week i go back. my bus ride here was good. was forced to listen to asap rocky instead of future but the god hour is one of my fave songs so idc. love ketchup.

i love doctor who. kinda disliking eyebrowless doctor. idk i miss my dear 11th doctor. he was so funny. i LOVED him and martha. my fave scene from the show is the swedish beach.

my visions of my death are coming back.

born to die is my fave album in the world. i think its Lanas best work, it isnt the deepest or her best writing, but her vocals are beautiful and it is a very cohesive piece. Lust for life has my favourite songs on it tho, its just lacking the cohesiveness that born to die has.

Went to the slushynoobz lookalike contest. It was freezing cold and i wanted to cry. i thought i would have to cut my feet from how cold they were. i lost my marting photocard so i have nothing to remember that event by. i was there with my friend h, her sister, and her cousin. We went to a textile museum afterwards. and then to a free cookie decorating thing. we had dinner at east tea can. i liked the chicken. we got nanis gelato to finish off the night. it was santas cookies flavour.

on Monday me and my friends f and j went to the mall. I drove j from the bus stop. we got tims and snacks from dollarama. the we watched Kraven the Hunter (has said no one ever) at the cinema. it was a 5/10. not as bad as madame web, but very meh. I got my period. it hurt so badly. we 'snuck' into the theater for wicked afterwards, but only watched a few minutes cause j got scared and my stomach was hurting so much. we went to dollarama where i sat on the floor while they found me tylenol. I took 2. they really helped. we took photobooth pics and then i dropped jeslyn off and went home.

On Tuesday, me and my friends h and a went to the mall. it was so much fun and i got my gift for white elephant (happening tomorrow) im so excited. i went kinda over budget but i really dont mind. i could get a reeses cup and i would be ok with that. i then drove us to our friend ds work place. she was closing tho so we went to dollarama and got kinder eggs. i drove h home and then a. i packed up my white elephant gift. so excited!! at night me, a, and f watched crime scene kitchen season 2 finale. the final 3 had us shocked and confused.

no one has been playing roblox with me :(

my Sephora cart and brandy cart r so cute i wish a had a large sum of money so i could buy everything.

after skating today, i went to the Chinese market with my mom and grandma for fish. they didnt have pickerel so we got smth else. the dude there was just hitting the fish while they were still living. dont know how humane it is but at least the fish are fresh. it was in jane and finch so i was kinda scared my car was gonna get stolen. honestly i love jane and finch, ik its one of the worst parts of toronto but i spent so much of my childhood there. then we went to shoppers. SO many things were on clearout i got some skincare and an eyeshadow palette. my mom got a bunch of chocolate for family back home ofc.

incredibly excited for tomorrow. i have been doing a crazy amount of driving these days. i have spent probably an hour on the highway this week. love it tho.

Simon menunggu anak laki-lakinya pulang dari masjid setelah salat tarawih. Ia duduk di teras dan menyalakan rokok. Sewaktu anak laki-laki itu tiba, Simon mematikan rokoknya di asbak.

“Bambang,” Simon memanggil si anak yang langsung menoleh ke arahnya.

Dengan satu tangan, Simon menyuruh putranya untuk duduk di sampingnya.

“Marbot telepon saya. He said you’re in this… sarung thing or something,” mulai Simon.

Segera setelah Simon mendapat telepon itu, ia langsung melakukan sedikit riset mengenai perang sarung. Kelihatannya bahasa dan meskipun ia percaya bahwa hal-hal berbahaya dapat mengembangkan karakter, ia akan lebih senang kalau anaknya jauh-jauh dari hal-hal berbahaya. Demi kamu.

Jadi, di sini lah dia, berbicara dengan anaknya untuk memikirkan ulang tindakannya

“We’re just playing,” jawab si buyung.

“Well, still—”

“Father,” potong.si anak berumur dua belas tahun dengan satu jari dinaikkan, “This is culture.”

“To hell with culture,” kata Simon. “This is—”

“Oh, kalo mama tau you said that, kita bisa-bisa makan nasi, tempe, tahu sama sambel doang sampe lebaran and you’ll be shitting blood every night,” si putra terkekeh pelan di akhir.

Simon menautkan alisnya, melihat anaknya dengan tampang tersinggung.

“Anyway, this is not your culture, dad, so you won’t get it,” tambah si anak sambil berdiri. “This is my culture. Just let me do what I was born to do. This is my culture, okay? What if I told you to stop drinking tea or eating something without flavour?”

“Son, there are consequences,” kata Simon.

“At worse, I’m gonna get whipped. Lagipula, gak mungkin ada yang di-ban dari masjid,” si anak bilang. “Atau mungkin you want me to teach you some moves? In case you and uncle Soap wanna do this in the fut—”

“You little shit,” kata Simon, benar-benar tidak tahan dengan anak laki-laki ini.

Si buyung telah melangkah menjauh dari Simon.

“If you tell mum, I will tell her about what you said earlier,” kekeh si anak sebelum melangkah masuk ke dalam rumah. “Night, dad!”

Selama beberapa lama, Simon hanya terduduk diam, terkejut lebih dari apapun. Entah ia harus menjitak anak laki-lakinya atau menepuk pundaknya.

Note to self, pikir Simon, don’t let him spend too much time with Soap.

tag nine people you'd like to know better

I. favourite colours: Red is my favorite! Many shades of red, actually. I like when it's vibrant but I also like wine-ish red, raspberry red, too, which is also close to a dark pink, but I like pink too haha!

II. favourite flavours: I like savory stuff in general, and also seafoods and fish. Little fruits, too, like raspberries, strawberries and all that, and mango! And I love desserts, too, especially chocolate and nut ones.

III. favourite genres: I'm open to many things to be honest haha! Fantasy, historical stuff. I love character development in general, too. I guess it depends on my mood 😂

IV. favourite music: I'm open to different genres too, and I guess that's why I really like Taylor Swift because she's always exploring with her music 😂 I also like Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, and my nostalgic ass has to say the Backstreet Boys too. Video games soundtracks are amazing too! Especially Final Fantasy ones ;)

V. favourite movies: I don't really know, but I know the dialogues of so many scenes of the Harry Potter movies, the Hunger Games movies and the Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man movies. I guess it says something hahaha 😂

VI. favourite series: I don't watch a lot of series! Right now I'm having a lot of fun with Percy Jackson on Disney+ !

VII. last song: Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift

VIII. last series: Before Percy Jackson, I think the last one I watched on Netflix was Wednesday ? Or maybe it was the third season of the Witcher. I don't watch a lot of series haha!

Do you make your bed? Yep, but somehow my sheets never seem to fit properly. I hate the snappy corners.

Favourite number? 3 or 13, I really like "unlucky" numbers, but I do tend to get good news in 3's so I'm drawn to that number.

What's your job? I work in conservation, but I'm planning to start my PhD soon (employment psychology).

If you could go back to school, would you? Absolutely, and I did! I had some years out when I was younger, and I was scared that I couldn't return after that, but University honestly made who I am today :). If I had infinite money, I would go back and do at least two more degrees (I have a bachelor's in Psychology, but I would 100% go back and do English Lit and History).

Can you parellel park? Uhhh the first time I drove a car (my first and ONLY driving lesson) I drove into another car because I have AWFUL spatial awareness. So no, I cannot parallel park haha.

Do you think aliens are real? I'm kinda undecided on this one. I think I've watched too many horror movies so it's warped my overall view on aliens as a concept, but I would like to think they are real. But it's the psychologist in me that says no. I'm a bit of sceptic (especially with ghosts as well).

Can you drive a manual car? Following my previous car answer, the first car I drove was a Corsa without power-assisted driving and I was yanking the steering wheel like my instructor had suggested, but I crashed. So uhhh...no.

Guilty pleasure?...... I mean, apart from Harry Gilby? Probably not many, but I do like a shortbread (I try not to eat them because they have wayyyy too much sugar).

Tattoos? Unfortunately not, but I will endeavour to get @lancedoncrimsonwings to do a Daniel Sharman tattoo for me one day lmao.

Favourite colour? I used to love yellow when I was younger, but now I really like gold or bronze, almost candle tones.

Favourite type of music? I will listen to just about anything, but currently my playlist consists of Dua Lipa and Sabrina Carpenter. I always put on a good medieval lo-fi soundtrack when I'm writing though.

Do you like puzzles? I am extremely partial to a good sudoku puzzle, but I do like jigsaws as well (I just don't have a lot of time to do them).

Any phobias? I have Hydrophobia, but it's not as severe as it was when I was little. My husband is teaching me how to swim, so it's really nice to be able to get over that fear. I used to be scared of dogs as well, but now I love them :)

Favourite childhood sport? I genuinely don't know if this is a secondary school fever dream, but did anyone ever play benchball? When you stand on a bench and throw a softball at people? If you catch the ball, you get to join those on the bench, but if the ball hits you you're disqualified? It was absolutely hilarious.

Do you talk to yourself? Yeeeep, I think we all do don't we? Although I tend to just kind of speak aloud, normally when I'm writing or reading.

Tea or coffee? I really love coffee flavoured things, but despise coffee itself. Like coffee and walnut cake is my absolute dream. But I have to choose tea, I'm probably the most stereotypical Brit you'll meet, I would carry a box of tea with me if I could lmao. Earl grey is my go to though, especially to enjoy with @waterfallsilverberrywrites TLK fanfics :)

What movies do you adore? I am an absolute horror buff, I'm working my way through every single one. Buuuut my favourite movie is Love, Rosie, so take from that what you will haha.

Album Review: 'Endless Summer Vacation' - Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus has gone through so many evolutions at this point that she’s practically a Pokemon. 

We’ve had neon-soaked Bangerz Miley trying to twerk her way out of Disney hell, psychedelic Miley and her Dead Petz, country pop sweetheart Miley on Younger Now, classic rock Miley on Plastic Hearts… She doesn’t give us the best of both worlds; she gives us all the fuckin’ worlds!  

So, I guess Endless Summer Vacation is Miley’s Solar Power? Not quite. This record doesn’t take itself anywhere near as seriously, but it’s not nearly as interesting, either.  

Like most Miley albums, Endless Summer Vacation is a mishmash of sounds and ideas. Some of it works, most of it doesn’t. If anything, Cyrus spends most of her time cribbing from other artists.  

Tracks like ‘Rose-Coloured Glasses’ and ‘Thousand Miles’ (not that one) recall the earthy 00s-style folk rock of Maggie Rogers, which is no coincidence since both tracks were produced by Kid Harpoon, who also produced Rogers’ latest record. ‘River’ capitalises on the bubbly disco pop already perfected by the likes of Cyrus’ one-time collaborator Dua Lipa. ‘Violet Chemistry’ is just something Taylor Swift already made a better version of on Midnights. Despite having a rather powerful team of writers and producers behind it (including James Blake), it’s nothing more than a bunch of chintzy synths on a loop.  

So many people have called this their favourite track on Endless Summer Vacation, but I just don’t hear it. Why? Are the pickings really that slim here? 

Well, kinda. So what does work?  

‘Jaded’ is a swirling Tame Impala rip-off but at least it’s a good one, infused with some early 00s power ballad energy. ‘Handstand’ (co-written with Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine, of all people) is big, fat and glitchy with a bright neon glow, with Cyrus tapping back into her weirdo pop instincts as she recites some swampy beat poetry (‘In the sky, we could see the riders on the horseback/On comets, coming toward us, kicking up with laughter/My friend Big Twitchy rode the boat into the light/Surfed to the north break/We danced until there was nothing left/Just me and Twitchy/'Cause that's all we knew’). ‘You’ is a jazzy, sweeping, aching ballad dedicated to Cyrus’ boyfriend, producer Maxx Morando. 

‘Muddy Feet,’ meanwhile, interpolates both Ella Washington’s 1969 track ‘Starving for Love’ and Christina Aguilera’s ‘Genie in a Bottle,’ and it works. It’s Miley at her best: Bold, raspy and ready to cut a bitch as she leans into the more bluesy tones in her voice. It’s enough to make Sia’s backing vocals feel like an afterthought. 

And then there’s ‘Flowers,’ a sassy response to Bruno Mars’ ‘If I Was Your Man’ with a nice, breezy groove tailor-made for ice cold daydreams and sunny kiss-offs to your ex. There’s also a hint of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ in there, so Cyrus hasn’t totally shaken off the classic rock aesthetic of Plastic Hearts. It’s grown on me with subsequent listens, but it’s still sort of wild that this song, so glossy and unassuming on the surface, has managed to score a massive 96m streams on Spotify.  

But by the time we reach the final trifecta of tracks - ‘Wildcard,’ the balmy ‘Island’ and the schmaltzy ‘Wonder Woman’ – the momentum wanes, and you begin to forget the powerful high that ‘Muddy Feet’ left you with in the first place. The ‘Flowers’ demo that bookends the record isn’t really anything more than filler tacked on to milk the track’s success, though the more stripped-backed feel does give it a bit of a smoky flavour. 

While looking at Stereogum’s coverage of Endless Summer Vacation, I saw an interesting theory posted in the comments section by a delightful chap/chappette going by the name of Econoline Van Fleet. ‘Not only is it obviously dog shit,’ they wrote, ‘but Cyrus is savvy and talented enough to know that it’s obviously dog shit. I suppose one could make the argument that her awareness of this fact is some kind of subversive performance art (“She knows that we know she knows!”), but that rationalization is itself a huge pile of steaming dog shit. This is the soundtrack of an artistically bankrupt empire in decline. The barrage of dog shit is every bit as predictable and boring as the decline itself.’ 

It’s not a bad theory, but is Miley really that self-aware?  

As an artist, Cyrus seemingly suffers from a sort of identity crisis, always doing a hard reset on each subsequent era. The same also applies to Endless Summer Vacation: There’s no common thread between these songs, the tracklisting almost an afterthought. There’s a couple of empowerment anthems sprinkled here, a power ballad there, the weirdo pop track somewhere in the middle... 

And despite the title, there’s not much to suggest that these songs are bright and summery in any way beyond 'Flowers,’ ‘Handstand’ and maybe ‘Violet Chemistry.’  

Lyrical cliches are also rampant. Whether she’s pouring her heart out or sticking it to an ex-lover, Cyrus’ feelings are often vague and surface-level at best, leaving it to the tabloids and Genius cliff notes to fill in the rest. And it has an awful lot of writers behind it, too: ‘Muddy Feet’ alone has a whopping 11 while ‘Island’ - probably the most boring track on the entire album – has seven. 

Endless Summer Vacation feels more like Cyrus making a cynical play for streaming numbers while still trying to atone for her more controversial eras. It’s all so painfully ‘safe’; I can't believe people actually like this. Y’all were just praising her for ripping off Stevie Nicks a couple of years ago... 

Now 30 and newly divorced, it’s natural that the singer would display a little more growth, but blandness shouldn’t be mistaken for maturity. It’s a problem that’s plagued many a female artist before her: Being forced to file back the edges and tone things down in order to be taken ‘seriously,’ as if fun and lust and passion have a use-by date.  

Cyrus' sharp shift into adult contemporary resembles that of P!nk in certain respects: A talented singer once known for rocking out now churning out bland, radio-friendly dance pop. I'm not much older than Miley, but even I’ve got no patience for this crap. 

Endless Summer Vacation isn’t the long, breezy getaway most were probably hoping for. Rather, it lands right in the middle of the road, just idling there until Miley decides on what sharp turn she’s gonna make next...
