Thomas Jennings was a free man born in 1791 in New York City. He was 30 years old when he was granted a patent for a dry cleaning process. In his early 20s Thomas Jennings became a tailor, and later opened a dry cleaning business in the city. As a tailor. Jennings' skills were so admired that people near and far came to him to alter or custom tailor items of clothing for them. Eventually, Jennings reputation grew such that he was able to open his own store on Church street which grew into one of the largest clothing stores in New York City. While running his business Jennings developed dry-scouring. He had many customers complain of their clothes being ruined by stains and so he began experimenting with cleaners and mixtures that would remove the stains without harming the material. He earned a large amount of money as a tailor and even more with his dry scouring invention and most of the money he earned went to his abolitionist activities. In 1831, Thomas Jennings became assistant secretary for the First Annual Convention of the People of Color in Philadelphia, PA. Thomas L. Jennings Dry Scouring technique created modern day dry cleaning. Jennings was fortunate that he was a free man at the time of his invention. Besides all the other indignities and cruelties slaves had to face, they were also ineligible to hold a patent. Under the US patent laws of 1793 a person must sign an oath or declaration stating that they were a citizen of the USA. While there were, apparently, provisions through which a slave could enjoy patent protection, the ability of a slave to seek out, receive and defend a patent was unlikely. Later, in 1858, the patent office changed the laws, stating that since slaves were not citizens, they could not hold a patent. Furthermore, the court said that the slave owner, not being the true inventor could not apply for a patent either. Thomas Jennings died in New York City in 1856.

I have a super cool, kind of whacky space/chemistry fact for people who have the patience to read this.
When satellites and other spacecraft enter Earth’s atmosphere, they get all burnt, charred, and blackened, right? Well, we (as in humans) have sent several satellites to Mars, and they don’t get charred at all.
Why do the satellites burn up in Earth’s atmosphere but not Mars’s?
Before I give you the answer, first you’ll need a bit of background information. At dry cleaners, one of the more eco-friendly cleaning methods they use is super critical carbon dioxide. (Super critical fluid is a state of matter that’s a combination of vapor and liquid). When it’s pressurized, the CO2 is liquid and gets the dirt off of clothes. When it depressurizes, the CO2 returns to vapor form, and the dirt falls out. As a result, the clothes get clean without ever actually getting wet.
This is relevant because what is Mars’s atmosphere made of? Carbon dioxide. When little robot guys (AKA satellites) enter Mars’s atmosphere… they get dry cleaned.
(Credit to my physical chemistry professor for teaching me this fun fact).

6/2/24.
I'm guessing Black Country, New Road and Dry Cleaning have listened to their fair share of Porridge Radio (Brighton, England) over the years. There's an intensity and song structure that recalls the fine work of both bands.
But this is way poppier than BCNR or Dry Cleaning. In fact, to me it sounds like The Bats crossed with either of those bands. But before I get too far out over my skis - "Rice, Pasta And Other Fillers" is the only Porridge Radio I've heard.
This album was originally released by Memorials of Distinction back in 2016. They've since repressed the LP and it's still available on Bandcamp.

Bob's big adventure.
This afternoon I went to a business I haven't been to in at least 20 years.
A dry cleaners!
When I first started working in a downtown office, I wore nice pants, jackets sometimes, dress shirts, and pretty ties four days per week.
That was in the era when Lands' End had much nicer clothing and catalogs, and everything wasn't perpetually on sale. Man, I loved paging through those thick catalogs. Before a LE store opened in the Twin Cities I made sure to visit the store in Madison, WI whenever I went back to my old campus.
The LE Hyde Park Oxford was my go to shirt. A dry cleaners by my house would press and starch shirts for $1.25 each. Fresh out of the plastic bag, on that wire hanger, those dress shirts felt like cardboard, and I loved it. My suits didn't need to be dry cleaned often. I think cleaning them cost six or seven dollars.
Over time, casual Fridays turned in to casual Mondays through Fridays. Then I started working at home full time.
Eventually I got rid of my nice collection of work clothes, saving three ties and one dark gray, all purpose suit for funerals and weddings. I have two good LL Bean Oxford shirts. They are made with wrinkle-free cotton and come out of the dryer in perfect condition.
Pictures over the last two decades at events would document me losing more hair, having varying body weight, and wearing one particular maroon paisley tie that is my longstanding favorite. Every time I tie it, it comes out with the perfect dimple.
This weekend Sheila and I are going to a wedding. At the last two we've been to I didn't wear a suit. A wedding of former Tumblr years ago saw me wearing a swimsuit and t-shirt.
Last night I tried on my suit. It's a little loose on me (yay). However it's also dusty from hanging in my closet for so long.
I took it and something of Sheila's to a nearby cleaners. The store's web page says it's been voted the area's best cleaners for 11 years. Yet it's new to me.
The lady working their smiled when I told her how long it's been since I needed something dry cleaned. Then told me the amount due.
For a moment I thought she was making a joke, her way of welcoming me back to the dry cleaning community.
LOL nope. Getting suits cleaned now is expensive.
