Alright, just a Danganronpa hot take, and a venting post as well. (It contains spoilers of the whole game up to Chapter 5, you've been warned!) Also, psychology rant but I think you're used to that by now x)
...
...
...
Ready? Here I go.
...
...
...
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CAST?!
I am talking about a very simple thing: Kokichi's treatment by the others.
Maybe it's just my empathic psychology student self, but I find them extremely cruel towards him for... No reason? Even his "friends" (Miu and Gonta) don't help him. NOT. ONCE.
Can somebody explained to me why no one at least tried to help him stop getting choked by Maki? Alright the state of shock exist, but not for so long! Someone should have snapped out of it and go help him out at some point!
Liking someone or not shouldn't be a criteria WHEN THEIR LIVES ARE APPARENTLY IN DANGER.
And the second time, alright I get it, him pretending to be the mastermind, so the enemy, they're angry. Fine. But it's still a dick move to just... let someone get choked in front of you.
The Insect Meets and Greet, can we talk about that? Alright, Kokichi planned the whole thing and lied to Gonta for it, but he had a purpose. It wasn't plain cruelty, it was to make everyone watch the motives videos which was TO STOP A MURDER FROM HAPPENING MAY I ADD.
But he can just be left in there with swarms of insects by the others students just... Because? Fuck him basically, it's "payback"? Yikes. And they still pretend to be all friends after that?
Maybe I'm taking that way too seriously, but the others only have a bad memory of the thing. In the game Oma looked traumatized by it, but everyone ignores it.
And the others times are not any better.
The least problematic behavior is Kaito punching him in front of everyone. Again, it might be just me being a way too empathetic person, but in my opinion words never justify physical assault, never. (It happens twice by the way -well Kaito only managed to hit him once but he intended to do it another time.) No, being "a hothead" is not a fucking excuse either. When you know you're a hothead, you try to NOT engage, it's the responsible thing to do.
But the worst is -in my opinion- in Chapter 3.
I don't exactly expect Maki to help him after what happen -obviously- but... Shuichi?
...The protagonist? The one that promised to Kaede to carry on her wish, her wish which is LITERALLY "PROTECT EVERYONE"?
...I got a bit carried away I think.
My point is: no one helped Oma who is in clear, dire need of medical help. I don't know if he crossed paths with anyone else, and frankly I hope not. Considering how nobody gives a fuck about him, not even Gonta apparently.
Again I'm going to repeat it, but liking someone shouldn't be a criteria to help them if their lives are on the line.
And let's not talk about Chapter 5 when he literally got tortured (that's not an exageration, strychnine (Strike-9 lol, gottem) is sometimes called "the torture poison". But at that point he's considered the mastermind and act like the villain so...
But before Gonta's trial it's not an excuse. Alright, he's a liar. Alright he can be annoying -and he is at some points, I don't deny it. Alright, he pretends that he likes the killing game -not even from the begining, he only start after the second trial I believe?- because he doesn't trust anyone.
But still. I may be too soft -because therapist- but I still don't think it's okay to just assault someone, ESPECIALLY in a stressing situation like a killing game when the adrenaline and stress can get to you and you might kill the person by accident.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Chibi DRV3 Merch Stuff
Just because the last Danganronpa spinoff came out in 2021 and the last mainline entry came out in 2017, that doesn't mean we aren't still getting new Danganronpa stuff in 2024. Because Animate just CAN'T STOP producing new Danganronpa merchandise for some (wonderful) reason! They JUST posted those damn tea sets, and they're already back for more.
Tumblr media
The latest things up for pre-order are a slew of chibi-style V3 character pieces; 25 total pre-orders are now up, in fact. These include plushies, acryllic stands, badges, stickers, charms, and some kind of character-on-a-stick thing called a "photo prop."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As is now typical, I first learned of this from Siliconera; I am grateful that they consistently report on all the new DR merch.

Oumota week: Survival!
What better timing than now to start getting into the Resident Evil saga, I'm high on Survival Horror scenarios and designs.
And paralleling their story in canon, they're both infected with this "Despair Virus" that will inevitably turn them into unconscious, walking corpses; so before that happens, why not take control of their own demise and make it more flashy?

Ahh Happy Birthday Korkeiyo!!! My favorite Danganronpa character. What a journey it has been..
I’ll ramble about why I love him on another day, but I really really wanted to commemorate his birthday this year with a comic. (I’m also aware that my characterization of him is NOT 100% cannon accurate, but I tried).
While I wasn’t a huge fan of all the components of your twist, I was sad to see you die off in chapter 3. What an end to a otherwise intelligent, observant individual. I did go into V3 knowing about this twist, but you quickly grew on me and it became harder to ignore how much I liked your character. And sooner or later you’d quickly risen to one of my favorite characters of all time - and seemingly for so many other fans around the world! You were so clever in trial and you’re anthropological side was so cool. You’re so mysterious and intriguing and such a puzzle to think about.
Ahh I wish you survived, but alas, rest in piece mann. I’m so thankful you existed, by beloved.

After three days worth of work, and a whopping 26 hours of pen to tablet drawing time (according to procreate), I present: them.
I was originally going to do no references, but then I decided I didn’t hate myself. Then I was going to do no symmetry tool, but then I decided I didn’t hate myself. Not all of these are perfect, but I’m glad I finished it!

can't stop thinking about how uncomfortable it would be for the v3 cast to interact with tsumugi post-game. not just in a "she's responsible for all of our suffering" sort of way, but also in a "she knows us better than we know ourselves" sort of way.
post-game mugi who knows all about your fictional family history. mugi who will correct facts about your fictional life faster than you can. mugi who can read you like a book. mugi who can confidently state secrets you've never told a soul. aghh it's so interesting to me i have got to replay v3.

The voice actors of the first trial's victim/culprit of the series coming back to voice the protagonist and mastermind who face off in the final trial of the series is such an English dub win in V3. I have to wonder if it's a coincidence or if it's a fun easter egg they decided to do.
(But Shuichi having the voice of one of my all time faves, Ai Haibara from Detective Conan, is a huge Japanese version win. Especially right after Conan himself was a previous protag.)

Happy May the Fourth, everyone. I thought this would be well worth a revisit today!
If DanganRonpa were Star Wars, who'd be a Jedi and who'd be a Sith? And who'd have the purple lightsaber?
Oh man… you really inspired me with this one. I REALLY put thought into this.
Jedi:
Makoto Naegi - He’s basically the Luke Skywalker-type. Optimistic and full of drive to do good and have memorable experiences. (I mean Real Luke, not Jake Skywalker.)
Kyoko Kirigiri - The purple electrum lightsaber goes here for both aesthetic reasons and its leadership/mastery implications. Someone who maintains that calm and collected exterior like Kyoko (yet still full of thinly veiled emotions) is going to be exceptional at this Jedi thing.
Kaede Akamatsu - A little bossy and kind of rebellious against the status quo, but a good heart. She’s Qui-Gon Jinn-type Jedi.
Haji-zuru Hina-kura - The wisdom of Kamukura and the positive force of Hinata should keep their final form on the side of light regardless of how “bored” Izuru may claim to be.
Chiaki Nanami - Remember: Compassion is encouraged, and Chiaki is compassionate as hell.
Aoi Asahina - Upbeat, athletic and full of drive, Hina is basically the Ahsoka Tano of the group. Of course, given that “attachment is forbidden” and she’s obsessively attached to both swimming and donuts, it’s possible she’ll wind up much like Ahsoka did: A rogue agent
Sakura Oogami - A good-hearted, disciplined warrior. A true Jedi.
Kirumi Tojo - “Selfless devotion” = Ideal Jedi.
Gonta Gokuhara - A pure boy. Although he’s an obvious Jedi candidate, they’d better beware: a skilled Sith could manipulate him easily.
Chihiro Fujisaki - Stronger at heart than they look, as Mondo told us all. Intelligent and kind and empathetic to others, always wanting to help.
Rantaro Amami - Cool, calm, collected. Slightly a smooth talker. He’s somewhat similar to Obi-Wan in those regards. Of course, his ability to win a previous killing game makes you wonder if he’s corruptible... could he be turned?
The Great Gozu - A bit overly aggressive and intimidating at times, but he’s still wise and good at heart despite the angry face. He’s kind of a Mace Windu.
Bandai Daisuke - Not as much of a fighter; he’s more of the “dispensing obtuse, crazy-sounding wisdom“ sort of Jedi. Think of Yoda on Dagobah.
Akane Owari - Akane makes me think of a more dim-witted Mara Jade — she’s spoiling for a fight, but she’s really strong instincts, and it’s those instincts that ultimately save her from falling over to the darkness forever.
Ibuki Mioda - Smarter than she seems and very in tune with others and the world around her, but some people imagine her to just be detached from reality simply because she likes to stay out of the fight. In truth, that’s just because she’s peaceable in nature. Imagine Barriss Offee if she never had that face-heel turn. (Oh boy, the references are getting more obscure now.)
Mahiru Koizumi - A bit haughty and has a tendency to lecture, but also confident in her usefulness and quick to point out absurdity around her. These aren’t bad things, really. She reminds me a bit of Luminara Unduli and the librarian from Attack of the Clones all combined. Her love of pictures that show people smiling really reveals her inner light.
Himiko Yumeno - I almost put her in the area below due to the same reasons I put Gundam below. The difference is that Himiko isn’t all-consumed by her delusions in every line of dialogue, and also, there’s at least one instance where she breaks free of them and acknowledges the absurdity of it. Her behavior is also far less aggressive, and she is implied to have a positive relationship with figures in her past. Overall, she seems like a well-meaning sweetheart most of the time and just attempts to help in her own way.
Nekomaru Nidai - I had to really dig to see if there are any loud, brash Jedi like this guy. It’s such a personality departure, but apparently the EU featured a major character named Kyp Durron that fits the type. Ultimately, I include Nekomaru as a Jedi because he’s really there to help and inspire others. That’s what he lives for. There’s a selflessness in what he does that is moving.
Chise Yukizome - Her devotion to protect her students at any cost to herself is a noble one. At heart, she always seemed kind and brave and was willing to break the rules to “fix” Hope’s Peak.
Sith:
Celestia Ludenberg - Given that she’s driven by selfishness and has plenty of suppressed rage, this is pretty natural.
Toko Fukawa - Cynical. Angry. Half of her brain is a serial killer, which is gonna probably corrupt the whole body. Maybe if Komaru comes along, she can turn this girl good again. But even without Jack/Syo, I worry she’s too susceptible to darkness. :(
Korekiyo Shinguichi - Another freebie. Super-obvious that murderboyincestman would be a Sith. He’d be so far into the dark side that he’d be a freaky withered husk under that mask like Snoke or something.
Nagito Komaeda would attempt to be a Jedi, but his insanity would ultimately render his attempts at finding balance and control to be fairly hopeless, ironically. He’ll eventually wind up falling to the dark side basically as an accident, more out of drive to bring more people to the light by giving them something to fight for, more despair = more hope, etc etc. Might eventually get redeemed?
Kokichi Ouma is both the Sith who thinks he’s turning to the dark side for the ‘right reasons’ and believes that he’s actually fighting the enemy (like Anakin) AND the guy who will take his cause too far because the “ends justify the means,” which will get him corrupted in the process (like Dooku). Not much hope for making this one see the error of his ways, though. He’s ALL IN on the Sith train because he's so misguided into taking what he believes is "the easy path" (as Yoda once warned against) to his ultimate goals.
Kyosuke Munakata would wind up in the same boat as how I just described Kokichi.
Juzo Sakakura - He’d be right there with Kyosuke. Of course. He's also that person who will bury his feelings so far down that they corrupt him from within.
Ryota Mitarai - Take a combination of fear and seeing horrors that he can’t cope with, then mix it in all in with someone who is willing to go to extremes to achieve a goal and alas, our poor tired anime boy is going to go dark.
Hiyoko Saionji - Obvious Sith is obvious. She is selfish and takes pleasure in hurting others. All that plus some tragic backstory = bad tidings.
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu - It starts to get sadder here. Fuyuhiko has a lot of pent-up anger and a lot of rule-breaking tendencies that the Dark Side will easily exploit. He’s going to wind up Sith, it’s inevitable. The only question is whether his fall will drive Peko to join him in darkness, or whether she’ll remain calm and controlled enough to stay the Jedi that she should logically be while endlessly trying to turn him back to the light.
Mikan Tsumiki - Oh, sweetie… I sense much fear in you. :( After all your years of abuse, this Fear -> Anger -> Hate -> Suffering.
Miu Iruma - I love you, honey, but you are a nightmare waiting to happen. FAR too emotional and insecure while putting on false bravado and even belittling the value of others to prop herself up? Yeah….. Sith Witch incoming.
Gundam Tanaka - One who is overtly delusional is someone who is just begging to be manipulated and turned. Gundam is a good person with good intentions, but his lack of human contact and his outlandish affected personality speak to a fragility within. A sad loss to the darkness.
Terteru Hanamura - A deep fear of losing his mom + a deep sense of lust is going to make him one very, um, gross Sith lord.
Maki Harukawa - Anyone who is trained to kill people whenever asked is basically just a Darth Maul in disguise. Unlike Maul, however, Maki still recalls the life she had before she turned in that direction. She might still be redeemed…
Tenko Chabashira - The true Darth Maul analogue here. Utterly brainwashed by her teacher, she will go to absolutely any lengths to punish absolutely anyone she deems deserving — even if she only imagines the slight, and even if the ‘lengths’ in question are violent and disturbing.
Tsumugi Shirogane - Tsumugi carries a darkness within her and a secret agenda in every single alternate timeline we've seen to date. She's going to have to be Sith.
Kanon Nakajima - Serious dependency/attachment issues + serious rage issues. NOT a good combo for a stable Jedi. You might recall a man named Anakin who fell due to these things.
Kazuo Tengan - Growing cynicism and frustration with the system caused him to try to find other, more radical means to his end. That sure sounds like a Dooku.
Seiko Kimura and Ruruka Andou - Jealousy and resentment and fear overtook these two so completely in DR3 that you can easily see them going dark.
Okay, this is running so long by now that I’m putting the rest behind a cut.
Other:
Junko Enoshima - INITIALLY, that is. I think her interest in/pursuit of causing Despair makes her a pretty natural Sith candidate, although she's too chaotic and destructive to really stick with any structured Sith dogma. Though she's not devoted to any given cause, either. Ergo, it's easy to imagine her becoming a Dark Side user who isn't truly Sith, ala Asaaj Ventress. In other words: Though she might initially SEEM like an obvious Sith at the start, I imagine she later falls away from the rules and such, ditching the official label. She doesn't want to rule the world with darkness: She just wants to watch it burn.
Mukuro Ikusaba - Not much good at investing in a side, either. She’s neither passionate nor emotional enough to make a great Sith, but she’s also not controlled enough/likely to defy her sister enough to go Jedi. If push comes to shove, she’ll definitely go Sith, but otherwise she’d basically serve as dark-user non-Sith support for Junko. Again: Ala Asaaj Ventress, or even General Grievous.
Yasuhiro Hagakure - Hagakure’s desire for money and his fear of nearly everything makes him an easy target for a Sith who wants an apprentice, but I don’t expect him to ever take sides or even take-and-then-flip sides. He’s just going to squeal and hide. His desperation for money might have him fall in with the criminals of the Black Sun or something.
Ryoma Hoshi - A candidate for Gray Jedi if there ever was such a thing. Despite his dark actions in the past, they were ultimately performed out of a sense of justice. That sense may be warped, but we meet him when that period is behind him now and he seems to be getting back in touch with his former self. I feel like he could be either thing, or maybe somewhere in the middle.
Kaito Momota - Definitely not a Sith but lacks the discipline and courage to be a Jedi. He’s good at heart and doesn’t really long for anything too desperately, but he does lie and act overly cocky. He’s more of Han/Lando-esque figure in all this. Just a man that's trying to make his way in the universe, you might say.
Angie Yonaga - If she really manages to connect with the Force and feel its will in the way she always claims about Atua, she’d make one hell of a Jedi. But if she just lies about what the will of the Force is in order to control people, she’ll make a hell of a Sith. Latter seems more likely based on her history.
Kazuichi Soda - Too emotional and afraid. Hides from the conflict. If forced to devote will go full Sith because he's so full of fear. Would rather just work on ships in the hangars.
Keebo - He’s a robot. I mean… to some extent, what he does can be controlled, but on an innate level it’s hard to say what he’s all about. Never seen a droid use the Force outside of “Skippy” so this isn’t gonna go much of anywhere in that regard.
Hifumi Yamada - Eh, he’s probably just going to write a manga about what’s happening or some crap. Doesn’t want to get involved with the ACTUAL battle when there’s fictional battles to write/experience.
Leftovers:
Kiyotaka Ishimaru, Sonia Nevermind, Mondo Owada, Izayoi Sonosuke - I have no idea what to do with these guys. Seriously. I could flip a coin and make an equally good case, I think, for any single one.
