Why America Isn’t Dominant In Swimming Any More
In the Montreal Olympics in 1976 the only non-American male swimmer standing on the top of the podium was the late David Wilkie. On the women’s side, the only gold by an American was a relay. This disparity was created by America’s success. Wilkie was a British swimmer and the champion in the 200m breaststroke in 1976. America still was the dominant force in the world for men. The writing was…

Project Breakdowns: other concepts
A collect-all post for the other ideas I have in mind for the project universe that haven't yet been fleshed out entirely, or exist mostly as loose concepts of "this happens sometime, does it need to be written?"
Masterpost here.
The Fall of Darekaeii
The Fall of Darekaeii is only in the concept stage.
In theory, it follows the Eagriss family, royal leaders of vel-Adreoni, at the end of Era 9, several years/decades after AAR, with specific focus on Adira Eagriss, the second oldest sibling. Some goals I have in mind for this, if I write it, is to explore Adira's "descent" in some capacity. How she grew up and grew into her family's worship of Morsanna (death goddess), and how that specifically led into her desire to overthrow her. How Nathan Shasear fits into the picture, and how he gave her the idea to "recreate" Darekaeii (and how he actually didn't mean for her to destroy it, he genuinely wanted to pose a challenge to the gods, but he gave the idea to a megalomaniac rich kid who wanted to become Death Herself...). Past that, I don't really know what the plan is for this one!
Theoretical Short Story/Collection: "Anti-Fascism is Dirty Work"
Theoretical story that takes place during Red Death's War and follows Aetherian Councilman 32 aka "Ris," a double-agent serving the Aetherian rebellion and the Mercishan-Alcairon Intelligence Alliance against the New Aetherian Empire.
Technically, it could start in 2036 E-10 when he and Alkaline Aviligne run into each other and Ris's identity is found out... but whether that gets written at all is up in the air (Al is a regular character in this theoretical work, though). Lots of spy stuff, secretly traded military info, and messages swapped back and forth between the Aetherian rebellion and the MAIA. Covers either 2037-2040 and 2042-2047 respectively OR focuses just on 2042-2047, which is the 5-year lockdown of Aetheria maxima.
MDCD: Auran
Synposis pulled from my Milanote:
The Metropolitan Disaster Control Department is a modern addendum to the police force and has several main categories: Psychological Services, Armed and Dangerous Response, Deescalation Response, and Tactical Response. Tactical and ADR are the armed members of the department, DR tends to vary on a situational basis. The story takes place in the 2010s of Era 10.
This is a story I have tentatively revived from my early teen years because the characters are near and dear to my heart - but I say "tentatively" because it has the potential to come off as as pro-cop/police, which wasn't the intention with which it was written originally, nor is it the intention now. MDCD:A is about members of a militarized police force that realize their purpose has been overwritten and that they're doing the dirty work for corrupt fascists - aka, the people and ideas they were supposed to be fighting the civil war against.
Specifically, it's about Vin Hawkes, James "Ink" Sullivan (one of his first calls ended with him covered in ink from an exploded box of pens, don't ask), and Vivienne Malone and the friends they went into the force with as they learn the truth about their boss and their government and either choose to stand by them, or choose to continue to fight fascism and tyranny and leave West Auran.
Vin chooses to leave, spoiler. James is actually a spy and he's the one who gets her out. Vivi... I haven't decided yet. She was a spy and a journalist in the original things I wrote when I was 13, though, and I have one of those mental animatics in my head that frames their goodbye in the context of "For Good" from Wicked (yes, Vin and Vivi are at least a little queer. I haven't decided if they're endgame yet or not though). MDCD:A is entirely unwritten, but is technically in its conceptual stages.

Newport News School Shooting: 6-Year-Old Student Wounded Teacher, Police Say
Tumblr media
Curtis Bethany, a councilman for the city, told reporters that Newport News was facing "unchartered" territory. "I've never heard of a 6-year-old going to school with a loaded gun." Schools that have incidents involving shootings that are this young are extremely uncommon. David Riedman, who founded the K-12 School Shooting Database after the mass shooting at a high-school located in Parkland, Fla., in 2018, has put together details on every school shootingany time a gun was fired on school property that goes back to the year 1970. He discovered 16 incidents that involved shooters who were under 10 years old. 3 of the shootings involved six-year-old children. Two of them were found to be accidental shootings. One occurred in the year 2011 in the elementary school in Houston where a student was carrying a gun and it was fired and injured three people; and another incident in Mississippi in 2021, where one of the first graders shot another student with a weapon he brought to school to play with. The third incident which was the subject of national media interest, a boy aged 6 was able to kill a little girl when the teacher was making a line of students in the hallway. Based on Mr. Riedman's findings it has been one incident at an elementary school that involved a student younger than 6 years old. A kindergartner who was five, fired an armed gun in the cafeteria at the school he attended located in Memphis, Tenn., in 2013. The victim was not injured. The tragic incident of violence in Newport News underscored the persistent danger of gun violence in schools across the nation. On May 1, a massacre of an elementary class at Uvalde, Texas, left two teachers and 19 children dead. In September, a shooter at a school at a school in Oakland, Calif., caused six injuries. The head of the Virginia Education Association Dr. James J. Fedderman stated in an declaration the organization was "saddened that we must respond to another school shooting here in Virginia." Becky Pringle, the president of the National Education Association, said: "We send all of our wishes for a full healing to the teacher injured in yet another shocking shooting at our school. However, today we are talking about the calamity of another school shooting. It will not end until elected officials take decisive action and confront the gun lobby to stop gun violence in our neighborhoods and at school." i'm rewatching elementary (a modern take on Sherlock Holmes that i can’t recommend enough) for the third time, but for the first time since watching gotham.
it’s one of those procedural dramas where each episode is a new case, so it requires a lot of casting. and because fandom is a curse, i keep seeing actors in elementary who were also in gotham.
for no reason at all, in a move that will benefit absolutely no one, i’ve compiled a list of said actors.
James Frain - Theo Galavan / Odin Reichenbach Sean Pertwee - Alfred Pennyworth / Gareth Lestrade Richard Kind - Aubrey James / Trent Garby Zabryna Guevara - Sarah Essen / Lisa Hagen Chelsea Spack - Kristen Kringle / Marjorie David Zayas - Salvatore Maroni / Juan Murillo John Doman - Carmine Falcone / Councilman Slessinger Danny Mastrogiorgio - Frankie Carbone / James Dylan Victoria Cartagena - Renee Montoya / Hope Tonya Pinkins - Ethel Peabody / Judge Marilyn Whitfield Ron Rifkin - Father Creel / Wayne Vachs Julian Sands - Gerald Crane / Jasper Wells Mark Margolis - Paul Cicero / Abraham Misraki Isiah Whitlock Jr. - Dr. Gerry Lang / Jack Brunelle Michael Kostroff - Officer Tannenbaum / Perry Franklin Margaret Colin - Taylor Reece / Natalie Gale
chelsea spack and john doman were in the same damn episode! they didn’t share any scenes but i still giggled to myself about kringle and don falcone eating at the same craft services table
also lol at james frain just being a Bad Guy masquerading as a Good Guy. love that for him.

RWBY Musings #79: When Titans Fall: How Arthur Watts will cause the downfall of General Ironwood and Atlas Academy.
Tumblr media
darleenas-art asked “ What are your predictions on how big of a role Watts will do this Volume? “
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Squiggles Answers:
Disclaimer: I was actually writing this musing this morning with plans to post it BEFORE the new episode dropped. But unfortunately. I didn’t finish it in time so some of the points I made mention of in this post were written premature to watching V7 CH2 and I’m not in the mood to go back and edit over some of the details. Nevertheless some of my theories presented in this post still apply even with what was learnt this episode.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
@darleenas-art  Top of the morning to ya, Dar-Dar. That’s a pretty good question so I hope you don’t mind if I turn my response into another small RWBY Musing post. As far as I can comprehend, given what I’ve picked up thus far from the first episode of the new season, my key theory is that Watts’ involvement for the events of V7 is going cause just as much trouble for Ironwood as he did back during the events of the Vytal Festival and the Fall of Beacon.
As a matter of fact, I believe that this time it’s going to be much worse. Last time Watts ruined the repute of Atlas in the presence of the other kingdoms and the rest of Remnant. Now I think the next stage of events is ruining Ironwood’s reputation in the eyes of Atlas.
My theory is that Watts’ schemes is going to spark a catastrophic chain reaction that will end Ironwood’s career entirely this season as well as his credibility within his own home kingdom. I believe that by the end of V7, Ironwood will be forced to step down leading to someone else with more malicious intentions replacing him on the governing Council for Atlas and it will all be due to Watts. Here’s what this squiggle meister is thinking:
Pre-V7 CH2 Theories
According to some clues presented in the first chapter of V7, there currently seems to be some sort of Election for Councilman going on in Atlas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I’m unsure of the full details of the Election, it seems that right now there are two primary candidates in the running for a chain on the Council---newcomer Robyn Hill, representative of Mantle and Jacques Schnee of the SDC.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite the fact that this all sounds like a simple election to elect someone a new chair on the Atlesian Council, I feel like there is going to be more to it than that. I can’t help but shaking their feeling that this election is going to result in an impeachment of General Ironwood with the new elective taking his place on the Council. Right now in the series, Ironwood is the man with the most power and authority within Atlas Kingdom.
Unlike everyone else on the Council, James holds two seats which I’m assuming is due in part to his double role as Head of Atlesian Military in addition to headmaster of its local huntsmen academy in charge of moulding Atlas’ next generation of protectors. Not to mention that it was also stated by Pietro Polendina in the first episode that the Atlesian Council are currently so scared by everything that’s happened to their kingdom since the Fall of Beacon that they’re willing to put their full trust in Ironwood’s leadership.
“…How does the Council feel about all this, or Winter Schnee? Do you know anything about her?” “Well the Council’s so scared, they’ll agree to whatever he wants…”
It was also briefly mentioned by the Soul Doctor that some of the representatives from Mantle haven’t been too keen with the way Ironwood has been leading things. So right now, things aren’t looking too peachy for the General in terms of his presence to the People of the Surface World. I’m not sure how things are looking up in Atlas for James but it’s been clear from the get-go that Mantle isn’t happy with him.
Tumblr media
Hence the election. It looks like Robyn and Jacques are running against Ironwood in hopes of one of them eventually joining the Council to introduce change. However, while Robyn is looking out for her people down in Mantle, the only reason Jacques probably wants in on becoming Councilman is for the sake of lifting Ironwood’s dust embargo. In typical, Jacques Schnee fashion, he is only in it for his own selfish greed.
And it is for this reason why I believe Watts is going to use that to his advantage.
I think Watts is going to do everything in his power to ensure that Jacques Schnee ends up winning the elections and gaining a chair on the ruling Council of Atlas.
Watts is going to end up tipping the elections in Jacques’ favour by discrediting the name of the remaining candidates against him---meaning Robyn Hill. This is where Tyrian’s role comes into play. In the V7 Opening, Tyrian was shown fighting against Robyn who is backed up by Qrow Branwen. I think it’s going to be revealed at some point in the story that Robyn Hill is some kind of local Robin Hood of Mantle---she steals from the rich to give to the poor.
Similar to her fairy-tale counterpart, Robyn has probably been leading a secret group of Merry Men in targeting the Schnee Dust Company.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Robyn is fully aware of the SDC and all of their nefarious deeds under Jacques’ leadership; especially in respect to the abuse of Faunus employed under them.
It also wouldn’t surprise me if part of Robyn’s story involved her utilizing whatever resources and power she had in Mantle to put a stop to the SDC. This is probably why Robyn decided to run for Councilman in the first place. After learning that Jacques was planning to plant himself on the Council, there was no way Robyn was going to allow that snake a chance to run Atlas into the mud like he’s done his own company.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Robyn joined the elections not just to challenge Jacques Schnee but to ultimately become a voice for her people. There is no doubt that Robyn is the Voice of Mantle and she would do everything she can to help her people especially during the current tough times since the embargo.
But while Robyn’s intentions may be noble, I have a feeling that in the end,
Robyn is going to outed and labelled as a ‘criminal’ in the public eye which will ruin her chances in the elections.
After all, even if she might still win her seat in Mantle (as her people might still wish to back her up), I doubt anyone up in the prestigious Cloud City of Atlas will wish to have a ‘vicious thief’ sitting as part of their ruling Council, right?
Tumblr media
So yeah, Robyn is going to lose the election to Jacques Schnee and you can bet your bottom dollar that Watts will have a hand in that victory, with Tyrian’s aid. As a matter of fact, not only do I think that Watts is going to ensure that Jacques is appointed to the Atlesian Council but he’ll probably tip the scale so far in Jacques’ favour that he’ll even usurp Ironwood
Tumblr media
I have a feeling that V7 will end with Jacques Schnee taking Ironwood’s place on the Council while Ironwood himself will be given the big metal boot.
I believe Watts’ ultimate goal is to cause Ironwood’s downfall---humiliate him so badly in the public eye that at the end of it all, it will be the Atlesians---the very people that James swore he would protect--- demanding that Ironwood step down as leader. Watts is going to turn Atlas against Ironwood.
Right now, the Council and the People of Atlas all have fate in Ironwood. Ironwood is no different than the Greek God his kingdom is named after. This is basically James right now---carrying the full weight of responsibility for his kingdom and its citizens resting solely on his broad mighty shoulders that are slowly starting to quake from his own Baobab.
Tumblr media
In the eyes of Atlas or at least the people who believing in James, he can do no wrong. You heard Cordovin last season? When Ruby and Weiss so much as implied the slightest probability of Ironwood showing weakness in the form of his fear and paranoia, they were immediately shut down:
“…The General is no coward! Atlas is STRONG!”
To Cordovin, Atlas’ strength is reflective of Ironwood. So long as the General remains resilient, his people will continue to look to him to be the personification of that strength and security. So long as Ironwood remains strong, Atlas remains strong and his people will have his trust.
…This is why it’s going to reflect so poorly when Watts eventually hatches his ultimate scheme that will rally the People of Atlas against Ironwood. Turn their faith in him into distrust. Divide them. Sounds familiar to you?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This makes me realize who Watts’ fairy-tale counterpart is supposed to be. In the beginning I pegged Watts to be the RWBY equivalent of Dr. Frankenstein. But the more I thought about it, I eventually came to realization that Watts might be a mix of two classic villains from the Pinocchio series: The Coachman and J. Worthington Foulfellow or ‘Honest John’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He possesses the charisma of Honest John, my theory is that Watts is going to make a ‘complete jackass’ out of Ironwood and he’ll probably use the Ace Ops as his guinea pigs for that cause since he was seen eyeballing them during the V7 Opening.
Tumblr media
Apart from the General and its military, the huntsmen are another symbol of strength and integrity within Atlas.
I feel like in the end, not only will Watts’ scheme  destroy the reputation of Ironwood but also the huntsman. According to the Atlas Academy promotional artwork that was shared yesterday, it was stated that graduates from Atlas Academy eventually go on to joined the kingdoms’ esteemed military forces given them an opportunity to move into the Special Operatives Division. According to the ad, the Special Operatives are promoted as the most elite group of huntsmen and huntresses in all of Remnant.
Tumblr media
I’m assuming this is where the Ace Ops also fall in. They are the crème de la crème of the huntsmen hailing from Atlas. It also wouldn’t surprise me if the Ace Ops are the Team STQR equivalent of General Ironwood’s forces. The Ace Ops probably know of the Relics and the Maidens. But perhaps I’m getting a little ahead of myself here. [Squiggly Note: As I said, I made this point prior to watching the episode and as it actually turns out, I was correct in both the Ace Ops being Ironwood’s personal team as well as already knowing about the Relic and Maidens]
All in all, this is what I think is going to happen with Watts for V7:
Watts’ interference, accompanied by Tyrian’s meddling, is going to result in Robyn Hill being labelled as a criminal to the public of Atlas, resulting in her losing her chance at Councilman to Jacques Schnee.
Jacques Schnee will join the Council of Atlas but he still won’t have enough political prowess to overstep Ironwood since James’ still has the fate of the Council.
This is where the second part of Watts’ scheme will come into play. Similar to the events of the Vytal Festival, Watts will release an upgraded version of the Black Queen virus which will take over all of Atlas and Mantle. Long story short, basically the idea I have is that Watts will orchestrate another attack on the kingdom which will result in defacing the reputation of both General Ironwood and the huntsmen using the Ace Ops. Like I have a feeling that the Ace Ops will end up being framed for an attack on the Kingdom. It wouldn’t  surprise me if the Ace Ops are specialized branch of the Atlesian Special Ops who serve Ironwood personally. And if the Ace Ops are framed as traitors to their kingdom then so will Ironwood.
Ironwood will be labelled as a traitor to his own kingdom and thus, Ironwood will be revoked of all of his titles and be sent to prison along with the members of the Ace Ops. Can you imagine how very tongue-in-cheek it will be if we started V7 with our heroes being detained by the Ace Ops only for the season to end with the very same Ace Ops going to prison with Ironwood joining them? Think about that and let it sink in, if you will.
Not only will Ironwood lose his seat on the Council but he will also lose his title as General of the Atlesian Military.
I also have this theory where Ironwood will be forced to step down even as Headmaster of Atlas Academy with the academy programme itself being shut down on decree of Jacques Schnee. I believe that should Jacques Schnee become Councilman, at some point, he will vouch for the removal of huntsmen programme so Atlas Academy could potentially be shut down by the end of V7 as well.
I know this part of the hunch sounds especially farfetched but hear me out on why I believe that’s a probability especially with Jacques running for Councilman.
Do you remember what Whitley said to Weiss back in V4?
“…What can a single huntsman do that an army cannot. That’s why we have one…even if it is run by a fool…”
At first I saw this quote as a throwaway line from Whit, but now I believe this line might have relevance this season. Since Whitley is being portrayed as a mini-version of his father, you can assume that his own views on the huntsman and the military are the same as Jacques. Therefore, Jacques probably sees the huntsmen as obsolete. Useless when compared to the fighting force of the Atlesian Military and possible even a waste of money since I’m assuming part of Atlas’ economy is going into funding the Academy.
And given the fact that Ironwood closed off Atlas’ borders, this means the kingdom hasn’t been making any profits from trading. I’m no accountant or economist or anything but I’d imagine that Atlas owes a big chunk of its financial success to the dust trade, right?  Not like I’m trying to imply that the kingdom is bankrupt or anything. However with the state of how Atlas and Mantle are (especially Mantle), you have to ask the question: With the dust embargo set into play, how is Atlas making money and more importantly where is the money that the kingdom currently has being invested into?
I guess where I’m going with this point is that I can easily picture Jacques Schnee, in parliament, presenting a good argument against the investment of the huntsmen academy and he’d probably make sense from a business standpoint. After all, Jacques is a businessman. He knows all about dem profits and making the best decisions that will reap the greater financial success (in spite of it the means and long term consequences of such schemes). So I can easily see Jacques trying to make the debate that Atlas having both a military and the huntsmen a huge redundancy in cost.
Why bother to waste the kingdom’s resources on funding both when you can best invest in the superior of the two---and if what Whitley implied in V4 is indeed true, you can bet your ass that Jacques might push for eliminating Atlas Academy as a whole while promoting the military.
And another rationale as to why I believe Jacques may push for the military is because of Winter. After all, right now, one of Jacques’ own in in the military. Not only that but Winter is also the proclaimed best operative under Ironwood and his right hand.
So imagine this for a second. Watts ruins Ironwood’s credibility by the end of V7. The People of Atlas turn their backs on Ironwood. The rest of the Atlas Council turn their backs on Ironwood and vote for his immediate dismissal with Jacques Schnee replacing him and gaining the influence James once had within the Council. Under Jacques’ proposal, Atlas Academy is shut down and replaced entirely by the Military.
And with Ironwood also losing his role as head of the Military, who do you think is going to the next best candidate to the take his place? Who do you think Jacques Schnee will put in a good work for take Ironwood’s place?
Tumblr media
I think you know we that person will be. If my memory serves correctly, James and Jacques were also found arguing about Winter back in V4 with Jacques commenting that ‘James stole Winter from him’.
So…imagine how Winter will feel when she becomes Head of the Military, not by her own hard work and integrity. Not with Ironwood’s blessing but because daddy dearest put in a good word for her with his newfound friends in the Council since Ironwood was made into a bobolee.
Imagine Jacques turning this into more propaganda for the SDC with Whitley officially taking over from him as President of the SDC, Jacques becoming Councilman and Winter as the new Head of the Military. That will be three Schnees in positions of power. I know Winter isn’t nefarious like her father nor was she groomed to be like her little brother. However, this is how I think things are going to go down by the end of V7.
Mind you, this hunch isn’t to imply that Jacques is secretly in cahoots with Watts. On the contrary, much like Yang and Pyrhha during the events of the Vytal Festival, Jacques will be nothing but a pawn to Salem and her forces and what would be expected is that he’ll too much a selfish fool to even realize that he’s been used by the villains.
Tumblr media
And it’ll be all be courtesy of Arthur Watts.
Tumblr media
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So in conclusion:
These are my theories and predictions on Watts’ for V7. Then again....I did make these theories prior to watching V7 CH2 and I’ll also admit that some of these hunches might’ve changed a bit after watching the second episode.
I still believe that Watts’ plan is to cause Ironwood’s downfall, only this time it will be on a much global scale. I think it’ll be best if I save that for its own musing since, as always, I’m still grasping stuff from the second episode.
For now, I hope you still like this musing Dar-Dar and for the most part, I hope it answered your question well enough. Take care, fam.

ABOVE: IN HOTEL SUITE at The Barclay, the Rev. Joseph B. Graham and Mrs. Rosemary T. Callan give a silver paten to Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace. The plate commemorates the International Eucharistic Congress, which will open in Philadelphia on Aug. 1. Prince Rainier and Princess Grace will participate in the congress.
The Philadelphia Inquirer - July 12, 1976
Princess Grace, Prince Rainier host 300 at Bicentennial salute
By RUTH SELTZER
Monaco's Sovereign Prince Rainier III and his Philadelphia-born wife, Princess Grace, entertained 300 guests Friday at a cocktail reception at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne.
It was Monaco's Bicentennial salute to the United States and Philadelphia. It was a beautiful party.
Prince Rainier and Princess Grace welcomed guests. They stood in a receiving line with their three children, Princess Caroline, Prince Albert and Princess Stephanie. Princess Grace's brother, Councilman John B. Kelly Jr., was at the head of the line.
“Doesn't Grace look marvelous!" exclaimed one guest. "She never seems to look a year older!" said another.
Princess Grace wore a lovely white silk pajama ensemble.
There was an informality about the party - relaxed and very pleasant. Hors d'oeuvres - hot and cold - were served. A trio played background music.
We saw Princess Grace and Prince Rainier twice that day. Before going to the country club for the cocktail party, we attended a presentation ceremony in their honor.
At the ceremony, in a Barclay Hotel suite, the Rev. Joseph B. Graham presented a sterling silver paten - a plate for the eucharistic bread - to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace in recognition of the part they play "in Christian life throughout the world."
Father Graham is director of institutional services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Prince Rainier and Princess Grace will participate in the 41st International Eucharistic Congress, which will open in Philadelphia on Aug. 1. On Aug. 2, Rainier and Grace will keynote the plenary session of an all-day conference on family life. The conference will be held at the Philadelphia Civic Center.
At Friday's presentation ceremony was Mrs. Rosemary T. Callan, board chairman of the C & B Corp. of Warminster, Bucks County. There, too, were Saul Lapp, president of the firm, and John Neville, who is also an official of C & B. That firm has produced commemorative silver plates (exactly the same as the one given to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace). The plates will be sold (at $300 each) to help underwrite the expenses of the Philadelphia Archdiocese in hosting the Eucharistic Congress here.
The first plate, number 1, will be presented to Pope Paul VI. It will be accepted in his behalf at the Eucharistic Congress by James Cardinal Knox of Australia, who has been appointed papal legate to the congress.
Silver plates will also be presented to President Ford, Archbishop Jadot (the apostolic delegate to the United States), and John Cardinal Krol, Archbishop of Philadelphia.
Cardinal Krol attended Monaco's party Friday at the country club. He arrived at the same time that we did. For several minutes, Cardinal Krol chatted with Princess Grace and Prince Rainier.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Bond were at the party. He is board chairman of Philadelphia ‘76 Inc., the city's Bicentennial agency. There, too, were City Representative Albert V. Gaudiosi and his wife, Cecelia; Deputy City Representative Anna Marie O'Brien and her husband, John T. O'Brien; William L. Rafsky (executive director of Philadelphia ‘76 Inc.) and his wife, Selma.
Princess Grace's mother, Mrs. John B. Kelly, was at the party. So were Grace's sisters, Mrs. Donald Caldwell LeVine and Mrs. Margaret Kelly Conlan. We talked with Mrs. LeVine (Lizanne) and her husband, Don.
Several of Princess Grace's cousins were there. Mrs. E. Shirley Turner came up from Middleburg, Va., for the party. She is Grace's cousin, Jean.
Princess Grace's cousin, John Lehman, and his wife, Barbara, flew up from Washington for the party. He is deputy director of the U. S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency.
Mayor and Mrs. Frank L. Rizzo were invited, as were Gov. and Mrs. Milton J. Shapp. They sent regrets.
At the party, we said hello to Fire Commissioner Joseph Rizzo and his wife, Marge (the mayor's brother and sister-in-law). Police Commissioner Joseph F. O'Neill and his wife, Eleanor, were there.
Curtis P. Laupheimer, who is Monaco's consul in Philadelphia, and his wife, Betty greeted guests. So did Alfred J. Laupheimer Jr. and his wife, Jenny. Alfred and Curtis are brothers. Alfred, who now lives in Delray Beach, Fla., is Monaco's consul in Florida.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph S. Rambo were at the party. Mrs. Rambo (Maree) was Princess Grace's bridesmaid. The wedding in Monaco took place in April 1956. Three months before the wedding, the engagement of Miss Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier III was announced at a luncheon given by her parents, Mrs. John B. Kelly and the late Mr. Kelly, at the Philadelphia Country Club.
At Friday's party, in the same clubhouse, were Trenton banker Mary G. Roebling; Wanamaker president Robert Drew Harrison and Mrs. Harrison; William S. Cashel (president of Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania) and Mrs. Cashel; G. Morris Dorrance (board chairman of Philadelphia National Bank) and Mrs. Dorrance; Thacher Longstreth (president of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce) and Mrs. Longstreth; Atlantic City Race Track president Robert P. Levy and Mrs. Levy; Philadelphia's City Council president George X. Schwartz and Mrs. Schwartz; Wilmington's Mayor Thomas C. Maloney and Mrs. Maloney.
The Rev. Dr. Leon Sullivan and Mrs. Sullivan were there. So were British Consul-General and Mrs. Denis Richards; Mr. and Mrs. George J. Hauptfuhrer Jr., Jules Lavin; Mrs. William T. Coleman Jr. (wife of the U. S. Secretary of Transportation) and her son, Bill; Mrs. Richard S. Schweiker (wife of the U. S. senator) and her son, Malcolm; Lennox Moak (the city's budget director) and his wife, Helen; U. S. District Judge and Mrs. A. Leon Higginbotham; U. S. District Judge and Mrs. John Morgan Davis; Mrs. Russell Austin; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Farmer; Mr. and Mrs. John M. Seabrook; Tom Foglietta; Lt. Gen. and Mrs. Willard Pearson; Hillel Levinson (managing director of Philadelphia) and his bride, Caryl; Rear Adm. Wycliffe Toole Jr. (commandant of the Fourth Naval District) and Mrs. Toole; Mr. and Mrs. John Gribbel 2d; and Mr. and Mrs. James A. Nolen Jr.
Wharton Shober, president of Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, was at the cocktail party. Earlier in the day, Mr. Shober gave a luncheon in Hahnemann's executive suite. Prince Albert, who is now 18, arrived with his uncle, Councilman Kelly. The luncheon, which we attended, was in honor of the U. S. Equestrian Team, on the eve of the team's departure for the 1976 Olympic Games. Prince Albert, heir to the throne of Monaco, presented a commemorative scroll to the team. The scroll, given on behalf of Hahnemann, was accepted by Jack LaGoff, the team's coach.
Last week in Philadelphia was summed up best by Marie Cashel, wife of the president of Bell Tel. Said she: "On Sunday, we went to a luncheon for the President of the United States. On Tuesday, we went to a dinner for the Queen of England. Today we are at a cocktail party given by the Prince and Princess of Monaco. Tomorrow, we'll get back to work in our garden."

George William Crockett, Jr.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
George William Crockett Jr. (August 10, 1909 – September 7, 1997) was an African-American attorney, jurist, and congressman from the U.S. state of Michigan. He also served as a national vice-president of the National Lawyers Guild and co-founded what is believed to be the first racially integrated law firm in the United States.
Early life
George Crockett was born in Jacksonville, Florida to George William Crockett, Sr. (1883–1975) and Minnie Amelia Jenkins (1884–1983), who had two other children: Alzeda Crockett and John Frazier Crockett. George Sr. pastored the Harmony Baptist Church in Jacksonville for more than 30 years and mastered the carpentry trade. George Sr. became a railroad carpenter for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. His son, George Jr., would later build room additions and continue practicing carpentry for pleasure in adulthood. Minnie, a gentle woman, Sunday School teacher and poet, said in a November 23, 1969 Times-Union Journal (Jacksonville) article, "My philosophy is that children should be ahead of their parents, should climb a step higher and make a contribution to the family and to society." George Jr. took his mother's philosophy to heart.
Education
Crockett graduated from Stanton High School in Jacksonville. In 1931, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia, a prestigious, historically black university that awarded its first degrees in 1897. He was later given an Honorary LL.D. from Morehouse in 1972, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, and served as a Trustee of the College for many years. During his Morehouse tenure, Crockett pledged Kappa Alpha Psi.
Crockett received a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1934 and returned to Jacksonville to practice law that year as one of very few African American attorneys in the state of Florida.
As a lawyer
Crockett participated in the founding convention of the nation's first racially integrated bar association, the National Lawyers Guild in 1937, and later served that organization as its national vice-president.
As the first African-American lawyer in the U.S. Department of Labor, 1939–43, Crockett worked as a senior attorney on employment cases brought under the National Labor Relations Act, a legislative program of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Crockett also worked as a hearing officer in the Federal Fair Employment Practices Commission during 1943.
That same year the United Auto Workers retained Crockett to run the union’s Fair Practices Committee, which tried to oppose so-called “hate strikes” by white workers, who protested the migration North by Black workers.
In 1946, Crockett along with partners Ernest Goodman, Morton Eden, and Dean A. Robb, co-founded the corporation believed to be the first racially integrated law firm in the U.S., Goodman, Crockett, Eden, and Robb, in Detroit, Michigan. The firm, eventually called Goodman, Eden, Millender and Bedrosian, closed in 1998.
In 1948, Crockett became a member of the legal team that went to New York for the Foley Square trial to defend 11 Communist Party leaders accused of teaching the overthrow of the Federal government, a violation of the Smith Act. Among the 11 were Communist Party leaders: Gil Green, Eugene Dennis, Henry Winston, John Gates, Gus Hall, Robert G. Thompson and fellow Morehouse alumnus and first black New York City Councilman Benjamin J. Davis. In 1949, while defending the Smith Act prosecution, Crockett and four other defense attorneys were sentenced by Judge Harold Medina to Federal prison for contempt of court. Crockett served four months in an Ashland, Kentucky Federal prison in 1952. A portion of Crockett's jury summation at the trial was published in "Freedom is Everybody's Job!: The Crime of the Government Against the Negro People, Summation in the trial of the 11 Communist leaders."
Crockett’s criticism of McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee grew after that case, and in 1952 he represented future Detroit mayor Coleman Young and the Rev. Charles A. Hill before the Committee.
As large numbers of young civil rights volunteers traveled to the U.S. South in the spring of 1964, Crockett recruited lawyers from the National Lawyers Guild to follow them. He founded the National Lawyers Guild’s office in Jackson, Mississippi, and managed the Mississippi Project (a coalition of the NLG and other leading civil rights legal organizations) during the 1964 Freedom Summer.
The infamous murders of the civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner occurred in June of that year. The three had been arrested by local police while investigating the arson of a Black church near Philadelphia, Mississippi. Collaborating with local white supremacist vigilantes, the Neshoba County sheriff released the three men from jail late at night, and other civil rights workers reported their disappearance.
From the NLG office in Jackson, Crockett dispatched Guild lawyers to search for the missing men. The effort was in vain, and, years later, Crockett described his growing despair in the 1995 PBS documentary Mississippi America, narrated by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee.
In the film, Crockett recounts his drive from Jackson to Meridian in a personal search for the missing men. He survived an effort of the sheriff to arrange his ambush by loudly offering driving directions, while white supremacists loitered nearby. Crockett returned safely to Jackson. He offered a full report to the Justice Department and the FBI, who refused to take the information. The murdered bodies of the 3 young men, one black, two white, were found days later.
As a judge
In 1965, Crockett became a candidate for the Detroit Common Council. Bob Millender guided his campaign. Crockett lost by a small margin "after he had been severely red-baited in the election," according to his former law partner Ernie Goodman (A Tribute to George W. Crockett, Jr, privately published, 1997.)
In 1966, Crockett was elected Judge of Recorder's Court, Wayne County, Michigan. The court handled criminal cases. From that bench, Judge Crockett incurred the wrath of the white corporate media and endured death threats for his role in a highly publicized police shooting, raid, and mass arrest.
On March 29, 1969, following an officer-involved shooting outside New Bethel Baptist Church in which a Detroit police officer died, police officers fired into and stormed the church. A secessionist organization, the Republic of New Afrika, had rented the church for a meeting. Witnesses in the majority African-American neighborhood later stated that the responding officers had all been white. More than one-hundred fifty persons, including juveniles, were arrested inside the church and taken to police headquarters. The church pastor called Judge Crockett before dawn.
Crockett opened temporary court at police headquarters. In refusing to find probable cause to hold the people from what he termed a “collective punishment” mass arrest, Judge Crockett released 130 of the arrested persons. In the controversy that followed, Detroit saw the appearance of bumper stickers that read, “Sock It to Crockett” and "Impeach Judge Crockett". The police association organized a picket line at the courthouse. The black community and interracial civic organizations supported Crockett.
In 1974, Crockett was elected Chief Judge of the Detroit's Recorder's Court. He served there until retiring in 1978.
As a Congressman
In November 1980, as the candidate of the Democratic Party from Michigan's 13th congressional district, Crockett was elected in a special election to the 96th Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles C. Diggs, Jr. from the U.S. House of Representatives. Dennis W. Archer ran Crockett's successful election [1] campaign].
Crockett was simultaneously elected to a full term in the 97th Congress and was subsequently re-elected to the next four Congresses, serving from November 4, 1980, to January 3, 1991. Speaker of the House Thomas "Tip" O'Neill swore in 71-year-old Crockett in the presence of Crockett's wife Dr. Harriette Clark Crockett, son, and 96-year-old mother, Mrs. Minnie Crockett. She recited a poem she composed many years earlier titled, Our Children Three.
During his tenure, Crockett was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Democratic Study Group, the Congressional Caucus on Women's Issues, and the Congressional Arts Caucus. He also served on the House Judiciary Committee, the Select Committee on Aging, and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. As a member of the Africa Subcommittee, Crocket authored the Mandela Freedom Resolution, HB.430, which called upon the South Africa government to release Nelson Mandela and his wife Winnie Mandela from imprisonment and banning. The resolution was passed by both houses of Congress in 1984. Later, Crockett continued to denounce apartheid in South Africa and was jailed with Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young and others for demonstrating in Washington, DC against apartheid.
Crockett filed suit against the Reagan administration claiming violation of the War Powers Act in providing El Salvador with military aid (Crockett v. Reagan, 720 F.2d 1355 (C.A.D.C., 1983)).
Crockett chaired the Foreign Affairs' Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere Affairs from 1987 until his retirement.
On Wednesday, March 28, 1990 Crockett, who was affectionately called "Judge" by his House colleagues, announced on the House Floor: "Mr. Speaker, a few days ago the press carried the story on the death of the Honorable Harold Medina, who was the judge who presided over the famous communist trials in New York back in 1949 and 1950. In the course of that trial, Judge Medina sentenced the five defense lawyers to prison. I'm the only living survivor of those five defense lawyers.
"During the four months that I served in a federal prison, it never occurred to me that one day I would also serve in the United States Congress and be a member of the committee having oversight jurisdiction over all federal judges and all federal prisons.
"Today, Mr. Speaker, I rise to inform my colleagues that I have decided to retire from the House at the conclusion of the 101st Congress. After 68 years of working, championing unpopular causes, I'm hoping to enjoy a little time off.... I've been privileged to serve the people of Michigan's 13th District in this body, and it has been a challenge and an honor I will always cherish."
Representative John Conyers, also from Detroit, described Crockett's announcement by saying "When he finished, all the members stood and clapped." Source: Detroit Free Press, March 29, 1990, p. 15A.
Family
George and Ethelene Crockett had three children: Elizabeth Crockett Hicks, George W. Crockett III, and Dr. Ethelene Crockett Jones. George III also served on the Recorders Court. George Jr. had nine grandchildren: Wayne, Charles, Kyra, Iyisa, Kimberly, Kelly, LeBeau and Enrique, and eight great-grandchildren. One nephew, Rear Admiral Benjamin Thurman Hacker (1935–2003) was a U.S. Navy officer, who became the first Naval Flight Officer to achieve Flag rank.
Following the death of Dr. Ethelene Crockett, George Crockett Jr. married Dr. Harriette Clark Chambliss, a pediatrician in Washington, D.C.
Crockett is buried in Laurel, Delaware in the New Zion United Methodist Church cemetery, with his parents and other generations of Crocketts and within walking distance from Crockett Street, named in honor of the Crockett family.

“Oh. Oh. Oh shit.”
The words did not feel nearly enormous enough. This was… this was General Freakin’ Ironwood, and Butters felt he had plenty of problems without being noticed by him.
In over his head felt like enough of a statement, since getting pulled along in the maelstrom that was Qrow Branwen’s apparent saving the world thing and all the way up to the floating city in the sky, which was the sort of technical marvel that’d normally make Butters feel weak in the knees.
Normally, anyway, because he was majorly intimidated. While Ironwood himself wasn’t the inventor of the technologies he’s seen - Penny - or heard of - literal aura transfer - he still spearheaded the machine that had caused them and was in part the figurehead of Atlas by merit of being it’s most media visible councilman, Headmaster of an academy, and a general to boot.
Butters’s apparent furious itch to break apart puzzle pieces was going to get him killed one day.
“Er, sorry. Hello, sir, General.” He stood up straighter, resisting the reflexive urge of his hand to salute as though he was military personnel. He certainly wasn’t. He wasn’t even a registered huntsman. Barely had a recently activated aura, for that matter, and Oscar was less than half his age with more than three times his strength. “I’m - er. I’m Dr. Waldo Butters, M.E. Haha. Friend - colleague - of Qrow’s.”
Well, that sure was an interesting reaction, however little idea James had how to read it. Nervousness, yes, but what kind of? Good thing? Bad thing? Did he already heard all the “urban legends” Matle likes to spread? Is it just regular ‘oh no, it’s the General’? Who knows. Sooner or later it'll naturally come out. Hopefully.
“Hello Mr. Butters. I've heard about you. Qrow claims you’re the best in your field, beyond comparision. He also likes to point out that no patients ever complained.” He smiles at the doctor. “Pleasure to meet you.“
“Please excuse the unannounced intrusion. I doubt we would get officially introduced any time soon, so I thought that unofficial visit might be a good idea. You do some quite impressive work after all.”

In March 2020, as the nascent pandemic was gaining a foothold in the United States, a friend kept nudging Michelle Bernier to make masks.
A reluctant Bernier — owner of an apron-making business — finally gave in, making a few and showing her friend how to do it. She posted the results on social media, and within days demand skyrocketed.
For Bernier, and many who mobilized in those early days of unprecedented shut downs, it was a 9/11 moment. Unity. Together. A common enemy. It was a chance for American Baby Boomers, Generations X, Y, Z, to have their own “Greatest Generation” —  just substitute World War II for a virus and Bernier for Rosie the Riveter.
Except it wasn’t.
“That’s not what it feels like this time,” Bernier said, reflecting on the year since California shut down orders began. “After 9/11, everybody was friendlier to each other,” said Bernier, who in those early days of March 2020 got the help of her family as her La Habra-based production of aprons turned to masks. “They were actually talking to each other. It’s not like that now … It’s really built a wedge between everybody.”

A year after Bernier started making her masks, Americans are as divided as ever – fractured over a love for liberty, which has become tangled in steps to assure the health of the larger community.
The very pieces of cloth that Bernier was making would soon become flashpoint symbols. They would both hobble the battle against the virus and fuel a poltical fight that made its way to a fatal riot at the Capitol.
You could see the fractures play out in real time over the last year in ways large, small, subtle and noisy.
In Orange County, in the pandemic’s early days of shutdown, the county’s top public health official Nichole Quick recommended mandatory face masks for all residents, only to be met with fierce public outcry and personal attacks. She would ultimately leave her role.
In Los Angeles County, Grace Community Church, in the San Fernando Valley, defied public health orders, standing steadfast on the right to worship indoors — a right bolstered after a string of U.S. Supreme Court rulings.
In Riverside County, back in October, with case rates threatening to regress, defiant supervisors voted in favor of a revised COVID-19 reopening plan to put the county on a faster track to reopening its economy than the state recommends.

Anti-mask tirades erupted in grocery stores, an anti-vaccination rally briefly closed down Dodger Stadium’s massive vaccination site, massive gatherings stormed Orange County beaches.
And then, worst of all, there were the elevated hate incidents against Asian-Americans. A year later, such incidents continue. The pandemic didn’t unite the nation; it simply became a reflection of the politically divided nation, on a mammoth scale.
Liberty, Trump and mixed messages
Rex Parris has no regrets about the bash his city held for the Fourth of July 2020.
Parris — the mayor of Lancaster and an outspoken critic of the county’s public health response — was not going to let the city’s annual celebration just not happen.
L.A. County had required the cancellation of all displays — including the giant ones. And everyone from Gov. Gavin Newsom to the county’s public health chief Barbara Ferrer were urging local cities to refrain.
Parris remained defiant all the way to the moment he himself flipped the switch for the show at the city’s giant soccer facility, despite the state’s fire marshal telling him the show was being shut down.
“For more than 200 years, every Fourth of July we have celebrated our independence, and we have done this with fireworks,” Parris said at the time. “What the (expletive) is the matter with these people? If I thought that one more person was going to get sick because of us doing this, I wouldn’t do it.”
Others were even more blunt.
“I was being forced and told, and in America that’s not the way it’s supposed to be,” Councilman Darrell Dorris, a pastor, told the Southern California News Group at the time. “Anything that feels like tyranny, we have the right to rebel against it.”
A year later, Parris, who was the first local dignitary among a crowd of Republicans to meet then President Donald Trump on the LAX tarmac on his February 2020 trip to L.A., is very much for masks and physical distancing. But he defends his July 4 display.
“The Fourth of July was not in any way foregoing safety,” he said. “We weren’t bringing people into an assembly of any kind. They were in their cars. They were told to wear their masks.”
But even Parris took note of the politicalization of the pandemic.
Masks — or the lack of wearing them — became a “macho thing,” he said, bolstered by an American president who rarely wore one.
“He used it as a unifying symbol for his base,” Parris said.
The narrative became “they can’t take your freedom away. We have to fight these liberals on the coasts. Then that became a political symbol.”
But the fractured response from a polarized nation is not all on Trump, say leaders and officials who’ve been on the frontline of the response.

A series of mixed messages from leaders to an audience of Americans already skeptical didn’t help.
Even Dr. Paul Simon, L.A. County’s chief science officer, acknowledged that initial public messaging was not ideal.
“I remember back in February and March, I was not very receptive to face masks,” he said. “But over time, with more … and with evidence from other countries, and it became very quickly apparent that masks could be very effective.”
“We were learning as we were going, so some of the messaging had to be fine-tuned and altered over time, and then that fed some of the doubt among some segments of our soceity,” Simon said, adding that even under the best of circumstances, a fully unified response may not have even been possible.
But for a nation already divided, that doubt was a huge catalyst.
Frantic business owners’ livelihoods were on the line. Theme parks were closing.  Sports: Done. Schools: Closing. The economy was cratering.
And by May, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors was fed up with state mandates. Eager for businesses to re-open, they voted to rescind a mandate for residents to cover their faces and practice social distancing while in public.
At the time, Supervisor Jeff Hewitt put an exclamation point on it: “We have a moral authority to save our dead and they’re dying out there … (Gov. Gavin Newsom) is destroying so many lives … There are times when people have to say enough is enough … I will not be complicit in following any of the governor’s orders.”
‘The sweet spot of controversy’
By the time the supervisors took their vote, COVID-19 had effectively “hit a sweet spot of controversy,” said Dr. Robert Kim-Farley, a professor of epidemiology and community health sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
“Had that number been 10 times less 0.1%, back down to like influenza, we would have been saying ‘oh, this is interesting. We have a new virus and we don’t have to close down society,” Kim-Farley said.
A number 10 times higher, closer to SARS, and people would have more fully embraced the public health measures, maybe even offered to do more, Kim-Farley surmised.
“However at this 1% level you have legitimately arising two different camps,” he said. “One saying yes it is 1% every life is precious but there are other things that are important too.”
Meanwhile, scientists were stuck trying to explain it all between the two bitterly divided sides.
“But it’s really hard to explain, when you’re dealing with shades of gray,” said Andrew Noymer, professor of public health at UC Irvine. “We’re stuck painting the shades of grey and it’s difficult to explain.”
Elected leaders tried, but in a now politically charged climate it was an uphill climb.
L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti appeared on CNN, lamenting the division that was hindering the response and fueling the spread.
“This virus preys on our division,” he said.
Not sold
Still, a year after local and state Safe-at-Home orders first took effect, Orange County Supervisor Donald Wagner isn’t sold on the World War II analogy.
“The war analogy, it doesn’t track,” he said. “During a war, you know who the enemy is. You know the capacity you have to go after it. In this case, we were inventing stuff on the fly. No. 2: The burdens didn’t seem to be all shared. You could go to a Target, buy you can’t go to the mom-and-pop down the street. It’s like if during World War II, you know where bad guys are and you’re attacking the bad guys three beaches over.”

Newsom said in a statement Friday, Nov. 13, that he should not have attended a birthday dinner with a dozen people at the posh French Laundry restaurant last week, saying that he should have set a better example for a virus-fatigued state that is seeing steep increases in coronavirus cases. Wagner — roiled by inconsistences in the state response and still simmering over Newsom’s French Laundry dinner — is leading the push to recall the governor.
“I am one who does believe that the government has a responsibility for public heath,” he said. “When you get to the liberty question, I believe they have overstepped that authority.”
Newsom acknowledged mistakes in his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, but insists the recall effort against him has more to do with politics than the public health crisis.
“It’s about immigration. It’s about our health care policies. It’s about our criminal justice reform. It’s about the diversity of the state. It’s about our clean air, clean water programs, meeting our environmental strategies,” he told radio station KQED in San Francisco.
Recall organizers are Republicans and say they have collected nearly 2 million signatures, well above the 1.5 million needed by March 17 to force an election. The GOP has only 24% of registered California voters, but organizers say they are attracting Democrats and independents.
Newsom, meanwhile, said “of course” he regrets attending that infamous unmasked dinner.
“That’s those things you can never get back,” he said. “And, you know, I owned up to that. And no one hid from that. And that was a mistake. Crystal clear.”
‘I’m right. You’re evil’
Kambiz “Kamy” Akhavan, executive director at USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future, said the nation is facing a waning of “centripedal” forces that bring us together, and a troubling jump in the “centrifugal” forces pulling us apart.
“People have always disagreed on issues. That’s not new. That’s not even bad,” Akhaven said. “We welcome it. What’s different, he said that now the tone is: ‘I’m right. You’re evil.”
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco says he knows that kind of demonization.
He says because he’s been branded a “denier” who believes the outbreak is make-believe. He countered: “It’s so far from the truth. I lost two employees in one day. And people are saying I don’t take this seriously?”
L.A. County Public Health Chief Ferrer can relate, herself the object of scorn — even death threats — via emails, letters and social media posts.
“It is deeply worrisome to imagine that our hard-working infectious-disease physicians, nurses, epidemiologists and environmental health specialists or any of our other team members would have to face this level of hatred,” she said in a statement in June.
“And it’s happening at a time when it’s harder to distinguish good information from bad information,” Akhavan said. “It’s harder to have honest, vulnerable conversions with people… they often break down and become nasty.”
Akhavan laments that the nation squandered the opportunity to embrace its own Greatest Generation moment. But he has hope.
He aspires to a future where education systems re-focus on civics, critical thinking, and media literacy and where political incentives shift to non-partisan forms of gerrymanding and social media algorythms that reward thoughtful points of view.

Akhavan and others say it’s not about disagreeing less but “disagreeing bettter.”
Akhavan used a sports analogy: “You like the Angels, I like the Dodgers, we both like baseball; you like baseball, I like football, we both like sports; you like sports, I like politics, we both like competition.”
Meanwhile, Bernier moves on with what is now a mask-making business — her aprons set aside for now.
Some friends have unfriended her on Facebook because of her masks.
Her mom, Irene, died in January — from COVID-19. Her father recovered from the virus.
She believes we’ll learn to talk to one another with civility again.
“I think there’s more good people than we think,” she said.
