Linda Smith has experienced quite the renaissance over the past few years. It all started with Captured Tracks excellent "Till Another Time" back in 2021.

Now Dot Matrix Recordings (and Sundazed Music) bring us The Woods - a compilation of a 7" and unreleased tracks. The Woods was Linda Smith's short lived band in NYC in the mid 1980s.

It really doesn't sound like anything else at the time. It sounds like 1960s British folk crossed with R.E.M. jangle. What if Fairport Convention and Peter Buck joined forces. Actually, "Miracles Tonight" has a groove reminiscent of The Feelies.

the older I get, the more the technological changes I've lived through as a millennial feel bizarre to me. we had computers in my primary school classroom; I first learned to type on a typewriter. I had a cellphone as a teenager, but still needed a physical train timetable. my parents listened to LP records when I was growing up; meanwhile, my childhood cassette tape collection became a CD collection, until I started downloading mp3s on kazaa over our 56k modem internet connection to play in winamp on my desktop computer, and now my laptop doesn't even have a disc tray. I used to save my word documents on floppy discs. I grew up using the rotary phone at my grandparents' house and our wall-connected landline; my mother's first cellphone was so big, we called it The Brick. I once took my desktop computer - monitor, tower and all - on the train to attend a LAN party at a friend's house where we had to connect to the internet with physical cables to play together, and where one friend's massive CRT monitor wouldn't fit on any available table. as kids, we used to make concertina caterpillars in class with the punctured and perforated paper strips that were left over whenever anything was printed on the room's dot matrix printer, which was outdated by the time I was in high school. VHS tapes became DVDs, and you could still rent both at the local video store when I was first married, but those shops all died out within the next six years. my facebook account predates the iphone camera - I used to carry around a separate digital camera and manually upload photos to the computer in order to post them; there are rolls of undeveloped film from my childhood still in envelopes from the chemist's in my childhood photo albums. I have a photo album from my wedding, but no physical albums of my child; by then, we were all posting online, and now that's a decade's worth of pictures I'd have to sort through manually in order to create one. there are video games I tell my son about but can't ever show him because the consoles they used to run on are all obsolete and the games were never remastered for the new ones that don't have the requisite backwards compatibility. I used to have a walkman for car trips as a kid; then I had a discman and a plastic hardshell case of CDs to carry around as a teenager; later, a friend gave my husband and I engraved matching ipods as a wedding present, and we used them both until they stopped working; now they're obsolete. today I texted my mother, who was born in 1950, a tiktok upload of an instructional video for girls from 1956 on how to look after their hair and nails and fold their clothes. my father was born four years after the invention of colour televison; he worked in radio and print journalism, and in the years before his health declined, even though he logically understood that newspapers existed online, he would clip out articles from the physical paper, put them in an envelope and mail them to me overseas if he wanted me to read them. and now I hold the world in a glass-faced rectangle, and I have access to everything and ownership of nothing, and everything I write online can potentially be wiped out at the drop of a hat by the ego of an idiot manchild billionaire. as a child, I wore a watch, but like most of my generation, I stopped when cellphones started telling us the time and they became redundant. now, my son wears a smartwatch so we can call him home from playing in the neighbourhood park, and there's a tanline on his wrist ike the one I haven't had since the age of fifteen. and I wonder: what will 2030 look like?

That special sort of feral tiny who lives in your garage. A person of dust and oil and dead leaves and drafts and dry paper. They live among all the things you don't want around but cannot get rid of. They climb neatly stacked piles of financial records, printed in dot matrix. They live in structures built from your grandfather's albums. They know the names and styles printed on the 78s: fox trot, orchestral accompaniment, blues, Duncan, ethnic. They don't know what they sound like. They wonder. They create elaborate pantheons about your aunt and your great-grandparents, all gone, each one a deus otiosus. They barely know you, you come and go, pausing only for a moment sometimes. You place the flag, neatly folded into a triangle, on the top shelf. You stow the wedding dress in its yellowed box (with the name of a long forgotten department store) in a rimed bureau, lingering for five minutes before you shut it and leave. In their universe, in their creation stories, you placed everything and then withdrew, leaving a void in your infinite self without which there would be no room for them. They liken themselves to the motes drifting in the dim light filtered through the grimed pane. That special kind of feral: fierce, exhausted, remembering what you refuse to.

Details of how his school works aside, tomorrow is VirgataBoy’s last day of high school classes. He won’t graduate until June, but he finishes formal classes tomorrow.

He turns 18 the weekend after this, and his sister will be 20 in June. Legally, I’m just about done parenting. It’s a very strange feeling.

I was 43 in December and maybe I should be feeling my age, but I don’t. I love my 40’s and this sort of quiet peace I’ve found in not caring about whether other people find me pretty anymore or if my clothes are cool or in performative femininity or whether I’ve done my makeup the right way.

(I was an Abercrombie Girl, a barista in the nascent days of the independent coffeehouse boom.) There was no social media. There were mix tapes and the mall and the Delia’s catalogue and Hard Candy nail polish and posters carefully ripped out of Tiger Beat. Kipling bags and Peace Frogs and Absolut Vodka ads that Rachael (that BITCH) collected.

I was super into this geeky show, and there wasn’t streaming or social media so you watched or you recorded it on VHS. You were, if as EXCEPTIONALLY geeky as I was, on ATXF on the dial-up modem. You printed reams of fanfic on a dot matrix printer because your friends worked at Kinko’s. You were a little shy about it all because it was wildly popular but somehow also not quite cool.

You eyed up the FTF action figures at Suncoast. Even though your friends bought Chanel Vamp, you bought Chanel Brown Sugar because it seemed like a Scully sort of lip color.

You realized some things about yourself, with Scully. With Gillian. With the complicated feelings being at an all-girls school gave you.

You went to college and grad school and got married and had babies and they grew up too. You shop online now and the posters and Scotch tape gave way to framed art.

Kinko’s isn’t even a thing anymore, you married a coffee shop customer, the Ford Taurus has been discontinued, is Abercrombie even cool?

But. This one funny thing remains. Remains so unexpectedly and sometimes, on a Thursday evening in March, you might be 17 again.

The Four Candles

I got kicked out of the SCP foundation after wasting over 80 million dollars to contain an artifact that I genuinely thought was incredibly dangerous. It was a set of candles in a gold frame, which never burnt down and could not be extinguished. Just weird, right?

That's what we all thought and it was simply kept in a safety glass box in one of the many warehouses of weird things, until The First Event. January, 1981, it's being moved as part of a cleanup and someone notices its changed: one of the candles is out.

We'd previously tried sticking this thing in a vacuum, under water, smothering it in CO2 or in a pile of asbestos… Nothing. You can't snuff out these candles. And one just went off while no one is looking? That can't be good.

So obviously we have to upgrade this thing in severity. Out of the warehouse, into a separate containment area, and we do endless tests. Nope, we can't relight it. We tried.

But now we've got 24/7 redundant monitoring, cameras and guards, we've got water and fire and everything else on hand in case another event happens and we need to try to douse or relight it in a hurry.

And we wait. Endless beta tapes (and later, hard drives) are filled up with footage of these candles burning unchangingly. Guards get assigned to watch it and then retire a decade later, having never seen it change.

But 20 years into observation, a second candle just goes out, without any fuss. We hit every panic button we can find.

Endless studies are done. This thing was found in a ruin in North West England? Send every researcher we can spare there. Are there any legends or folklore or stories or ANYTHING about this?

Because it took 20 years to go from 3 to 2. We can do math. If this thing is counting down at a steady pace, we have only 40 years to get ready for the last candle to go out.

And we don't know what happens then.

Maybe nothing.

Or maybe there will be nothing left.

We work backwards; we only found the candles in the 70s, but if it goes down by a candle every two decades, then maybe it was created in the early 60s? We search for any clues about what might have happened in the 1960s in Manchester and Liverpool.

I'm on the ground with another field researcher when I get a message that we're all being recalled, immediately. No explanation.

I get back to the foundation site and all my researchers are being reassigned. My boss wants to talk to me. I check the candle monitoring site on my phone: we're still on two. I'm confused.

I enter my boss's office. It's uncharacteristically dark. She slides me a printout, on fan fold paper still with the little dot matrix tractor holes along the sides. It's an email.

Another researcher had a random hunch, and looked into the monitoring records, specifically as to when the second candle went out. November 29th, 2001. And the previous one was unknown, but happened sometime between December 1st, 1980 and mid-January 1981.

My boss asks if these dates look familiar to me, and if I listen to much music.

I think I may know. She tells me they were able to confirm the second event happened within 5 minutes of the time of death.

The candles are going back in the warehouse, and only a simple webcam will be used to monitor for the next event, just in case it proves us wrong.

And she gives me a lecture about how the purpose of the SCP Foundation is to secure, contain, and protect... From dangerous anomalous artifacts and people and places. Things that break all our scientific theories and could cause untold devastation if they get loose...

op sneaking around like that was a little wild. he’s usually much too big to sneak. and then the two mechs with t-cogs managed to chase after him so easily really emphasized how much weaker everyone who couldn’t transform was

op did come off as a bit arrogant/self-centered to me, in how he would challenge the system without thinking of the consequences to the people around him (elita getting fired, dumping megs in the race with him) which I don’t think was the intent. but it could’ve been imitating the launch-the-allspark-into-space-and-immediately-regret-it version of op in some of the more recent continuities. It is mirrored a bit in megs as well, like when he fires on the statue without concern for bystanders or on sentinel—they’re both capable of tunnel vision while focusing on their own morals

having cybertron’s environment in a constant state of transformation was wonderful. like this might’ve been my favorite addition to the franchise from this continuity. it added a new danger to the already-dangerous job of being a miner. the train tracks that only exist when there’s a train but also respond in real time to obstacles? whatever the heck was happening on the surface? muah

when the quintesson guards came out at first I was all >:( why do they have legs? but then the actual quintesson came out and it looked SO GOOD AND OMINOUS. it was bigger than sentinel! and the organic curves of the tentacles after all of the blockiness of cybertron felt so alien. really well done. the only thing is I don’t remember it rotating faces at all which I’m a little disappointed in, but maybe in a sequel?

weird to realize they pulled the matrix-disintegration from bayformers, but it just goes to show that every continuity brings something new! I have a feeling that scene was cooler in 3d

having the future-decepticons as the former high guard made me squint a little bc I would THINK that the group specifically devoted to serving the PRIMES might be inclined to follow a PRIME who bears the MATRIX OF LEADERSHIP, but apparently they’re quite alright with megatron’s vengeance and might makes right philosophies? or is this just the remainder of the high guard? did sentinel kill all the truly loyal ones?

did anyone else get the vibe that starscream was deliberately provoking megatron during their fight? like he wanted to see what he was capable of?

screamer’s voice being like that because of megatron + the recurring injury to bumblebee’s voice also due to megatron in other continuities… I am connecting the dots…

DIVORCE MUSIC ^_^ The sleeve on this baby is in fantastic condition for an original 1974 press, and comes complete with its (very slightly torn) insert and (very slightly sticky-taped) annotated paper sleeve. There's a little tear near the top of the back of the outer sleeve, and the near-illegible spine is rather battered, but it's nothing major. I think the labels on the records are my favourites, ever. OLIVIA!!!!!!

The record itself is in pristine condition, and plays accordingly! No scratches, fingerprints, or marks. There's almost no crackling whatsoever, if any, which either means I need to double-check that matrix, or whoever had it before me reeeeally cared about George Harrison (or didn't, and never played the record. Well she's in MY hands now and I am going to treat her soooo right). The song which I found to be most notably different to its dot mp3 counterpart is Dark Horse; either it's been play-worn into sounding so distinct, or the natural beauty and wonder of the original mix has struck me into a stupor of love and reverence for my beautiful wife. I'd heard of Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments (Columbus, Ohio), but never listened. I got an email from Goner Records announcing a huge sale. And "Bait and Switch" was one of the LPs available for $9.99.

So, I headed over to Bandcamp, and was literally blown away. Snotty and aggressive almost aren't fair descriptors of this garage punk. Ron House (formerly of Great Plains) and his crew are here to wreck you. This reminds me of a bloozier Mclusky. Or a rougher Pere Ubu. Or a sloppier Black Lips or The Replacements.

The version at Goner Records is the reissue on Dot Matrix. This was originally issued on Onion Records.
