History

In 1938, the first-ever National Donut Day was celebrated in Chicago, and the history of The Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies was officially immortalized. In 1917, these women were sent to France to establish field bases near the front lines. In makeshift huts, thousands of soldiers would come to stock up on essential goods and grab a sweet treat baked by the Lassies.

Both the presence of these courageous women and the donuts that tasted of home brought a light of hope and happiness to the battlefield — a much-needed morale boost for languishing soldiers. In fact, the Donut Lassies are also credited with popularizing the donut in the United States after the troops (commonly known as “doughboys”) came back from fighting in Europe. And still today, over a hundred years later, The Salvation Army continues to serve on the front lines through a wide range of social services for the most vulnerable individuals and families living in the United States.

Donut Day Origins: The Salvation Army created the first donut day event in Chicago in 1938 as a fundraiser to help those in need during The Great Depression.

Winning Hearts And Stomachs: Donut Lassies were Salvation Army volunteers who baked and delivered donuts during World War I.

Sugar + Flour + Courage: The donut was, and continues to be, a taste of home and a symbol of comfort to people living in the United States.

Throughout 2024, I'm making treats for my favorite idol game characters on their birthdays! Today we have my favorite iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls character, Noriko!

Donuts were the SUPER obvious choice here, so I went with one of my favorite recipes, King Arthur's Baked Donuts! This is an excellent base recipe for fluffy oven-baked donuts that you can decorate however you wish. For this batch, I went with coating half of them with cinnamon sugar, and the other half were double-dipped in an apple cider glaze! Here's the recipe for the donuts and a separate recipe for the apple cider glaze. I like a lighter, runnier glaze, so I doubled the amount of apple cider in mine.

In hindsight, these are a little plain looking and I could have probably at least added some food coloring or something to make them stand out more. In my defense, I made these pretty much as soon as I rolled out of bed. LOL

🍩 DONUT - favourite sweet treat?

Martin doesn't usually eat sweet things unless it's something a loved one has baked or bought specifically for him. On cheat days though, his go-to is store-bought gifflar with vanilla filling, or cinnamon buns.

Demetra: On Christmas, pandoro (she HATES panettone), especially the one with limoncello. On any other day though, Ferrero Rochers or pink doughnuts.

Evander: he loves anything as long as sugar is in it honestly, but his favourites are Persians Rolls. Both he and Demetra love dougnuts so that's just one more thing they have in common.

Harley loves anything chocolate and she loves baking; so she'll often try out different chocolate recipes. During the show, Martin convinces her to bake kladdkaka and she falls in love with it.

Echo has a sweet tooth, her favourites are plum dumplings, smurf ice cream, and baklava of course.

Dominic doesn't eat sweet things often, his teeth start hurting immediately after. He loves caramel peanut protein bars though, he doesn't eat them for the protein or anything, he literally just likes the taste.

🍩 [Donut] What's the weirdest thing someone eats in your WIP? What's the best thing?

Hmm, this is a tough one as I don't really talk much about what people eat in the Tales of the Librarian series. I honestly don't think there's anything too weird that anyone would eat, though I think eating something that was made by a squiggly-diddle-fied pot or pan or something would be very weird indeed (there's probably some sort of aftertaste that is best not to think about too hard when you consider what squiggly diddles do.... I'll make a worldbuilding post about those so everyone can have some sort of context for this part of the answer. Be prepared to be either thoroughly weirded out or mildly disgusted).

As for the best thing anyone eats; I think that's probably the custard pies made by the Toreguarde council chambers resident cook. Apparently the recipe is an old family one and there's some sort of secret ingredient involved that Martha refuses to share any information about. One of her apprentices makes a really nice lamb stew that all the council members constantly rave about. Sadly Selene doesn't get to eat that very often given how often Schreiber wants to get any Triumverate meetings over and done with as quickly as possible, so there's rarely any time for actual meals. Selene will confess to being a bit jealous of the members of the council that work in the chambers full time due to this.

I don't know if anything weird is eaten in A Colder Home, but there is an argument about whether cold pizza is Valid or not, so... probably that. The best thing that's eaten is... IDK, pizza and oatmeal are the only foods mentioned so far LOL

In To Consume, Cass makes her mother's gumbo recipe in one scene, so that's probably the best thing that gets eaten. As for the weirdest thing... I mean, this is the cannibalism WIP, so :P

Cold weekend activities.

I rented a movie from the library, a film that I’ve been meaning to watch for a long time. My library of choice is old and has some historic ties to the Wright Brothers. I know I can just find movies on streaming or by renting them online, but it is more fun to go browse shelves, overhear people and stumble across old DVDs you didn’t think still existed.

I also tried out a gluten free donut recipe that turned out really well. 🍩

Nex: Loves Aunt Clover’s famous Tomato soup! Nex even learned the recipe before moving to Whiskerman’s Warf.

Clyde: Oil truffles are the bomb!

Cerberus: Loves chewing on a bone or two.

Cooper: Has his own special recipe for ‘Grilled Cheesesteak’! He eats that shit up for breakfast, brunch, lunch, linner, and dinner!

Winnie: Enjoys some tamales from time to time.

Astrid: When her mom isn't looking, she sneaks in cupcakes as a treat.

Ruby: Enjoys smoked salmon with a side of roasted potatoes!

🎂 BIRTHDAY CAKE - when is their birthday? Do they like to celebrate it?

Nex: April 6th (18 years old)

Clyde: Doesn't have a birthday technically but likes to celebrate his birthday on October 10, the day he was created by Nex’s dad, Felix Newton. Sr.

Cerberus: Doesn't know his actual birthday, but likes to think that the day that Felix. Sr revived him was his birthday, that day being March 17. (Probably 48 in human years)

Cooper: February 23 (19 years old)

Winnie: November 18 (19 years old)

Astrid: December 25 (20 years old)

Ruby: June 10 (21 years old, hooray! Pride Month!)

Winnie doesn't really care about his birthday, and neither does Astrid nor Cerberus. The rest love to have their birthdays celebrated!
