This Fight Would Be Equal Parts Awful and Amazing

Matt Bomer played a vampire in AHS: Hotel, named Donovan.

Now I can say that Henry has this guy beat in the power department. Dude has only been a vampire for like 20 some odd years and has no fighting experience.

But we are talking fictional character here, so let's give Donovan a buff. He's younger than Henry, but still got centuries on him.

Imagine Donovan coming in to take claim of Toronto over Henry's dead body. Henry already said that territory takeovers are brutal.

He will of course target those closest to him.

Look great while doing it.

Vicki is going to be all up in the mix because she doesn't know how else to live.

And Henry WILL fight with everything he has to protect what's his.

I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.

After meeting with Jameson regarding the situation that the Donovans were in, Ace was quick to reach out to Adriel and Warren to arrange a video conference with them and the agents that had been brought into the matter. He had seventy-two hours to prepare the arrangements. He went to great lengths to make sure that their location would be untraceable. And then it was time for Ace to hit the road himself.

Agent Parvis and Neal disappeared from the screen of the laptop that sat in front of Adriel and Warren. The two men stared at the black screen that reflected themselves now. Slowly, they turned to look at each other though neither spoke. It was clear that they were replaying the meeting over in their heads. After several minutes of silence, Adriel closed the laptop and sat back in the swivel chair. It swayed under the shift of weight. 

“Wow,” he finally said, running his hand along the back of his head. 

Warren also leaned back and then looked back at Adriel. “We can do this,” he said, his tone calm and confident. 

“Let’s leave immediately. I want to get this over with so I can take Cat home.” 

Both of them stood up and headed to the staircase that led from the basement to the main floor of the safe house they were staying at in Colombia. Cataleya was pacing outside of the door with her hands folded across her ample chest. She stopped and walked briskly to the men, not letting them fully enter the hallway. “Well? What did they say?” she asked, her dark eyes staring into her husband’s lighter hues. 

Adriel took Cat by the hand and led her down the hallway towards another staircase so they could go to their room to talk. He was halfway up the steps when he looked down to see Warren coming. “Start packing,” he said to his best friend and then gave Cat his entire attention. Inside their bedroom, he sat her down on the bed and he crouched in front of it, his hands finding hers and held them on her lap. He delved into the entire conversation they had with Neal, Parvis, and Jameson Stanton. Like him and Warren, Cataleya was also speechless. 

While she digested the idea that they had been presented with, Adriel took this time to start packing a go bag for himself. He was halfway through when he heard a knock at the door. “Come in,” he said and looked through the mirror on the wall to see Warren in the doorway. 

“I’m ready,” Warren said, a duffel bag by his side. 

This seemed to stir Cat back to life. With reality setting in, she jumped up from the bed and hurried to the wardrobe to start pulling out some clothes to pack. Adriel abruptly stopped packing and turned to watch his wife. “Uh what do you think you’re doing?” 

“I’m coming with you,” she stated factually. “What did you think?”

“You are not coming,” Adriel said, quickly grabbing the bag from her to start putting things back where they were. 

“Adriel, don’t,” she scolded, fisting her grip tighter into the duffel bag. “I’m coming!” 

“You can’t go,” Warren said, stating the obvious, or so he thought. 

Adriel and Cat both looked at him with surprise and intrigue. Naturally, Adriel was on his side but he wondered what ace he had up his sleeve to get Cat to keep her ass safely where she was. When neither of them acknowledged the silent hint he gave, Warren laughed nervously, and rubbed the back of his neck. 

“Don’t punch me, Adriel…” he started, taking a step out into the hallway to put more distance between them. “I noticed Cat’s…chest,” he emphasized to try and dull the blow of noticing Adriel’s wife’s body, “has gotten larger.” The anger that flared over Adriel’s face sent Warren into a stammer, “And certain smells make her sick now and she gets really emotional when the stray cat leaves after being fed in the evenings.” 

Cataleya’s hand fell to her stomach and she held it protectively. Adriel kind of scoffed and started adding things up, he soon looked at Cataleya’s stomach and wondered if Warren was right. Was she pregnant? Adriel felt his heart swell with love and joy and he went to his wife to pull her close. “Are you?” he whispered. Cat’s eyes were welling up with tears at the idea. Neither of them believed she could have children. This was surely a miracle if it was true. This empowered Adriel’s decision to end this once and for all so he could take his family home. 

Adriel’s eyes never faltered from Cat’s face, even as he heard Warren’s footsteps receding down the hallway to give them privacy. He held onto this wife and kissed her. “I have to do this, baby. And if you are pregnant, that’s more reason for you to stay here where you’ll be safe.” 

Cat sobbed quietly and wrapped her arms around him, stepping on her toes so she could reach him better. “I don’t want to be without you…even for one night.” 

“Knock knock knock,” came a familiar voice from the open doorway and the husband and wife turned around to see Ace standing there. 

“Ace?” Adriel said, happy and surprised. 

“Cat, you missed me so much you’re crying?” Ace teased as he closed the gap between him and his sister in law and hugged her tightly. He pulled away and looked up at his brother. “I came to see my sis, thank you very much.” Now, he clasped hands with his brother and pulled him in for a hug. “While you’re away,” he explained and Adriel gave him a grateful smile. 

Cataleya laughed and looked at Ace and then Adriel. They spoke silently with their eyes for a moment and then she turned to Ace again, “Thank you for coming, Ace.” 

“It’s almost over,” Ace whispered.

“Hello gentlemen, may I introduce myself?” asked the FBI agent, not waiting for an answer before proceeding. “I am Agent Neal and this is Agent Parvis. We will be handling the case so any and all information and communication goes through us,” he explained, his facial expressions stern though he waved a hand when he addressed his partner.

Agent Parvis cleared his throat then nodded to Jameson Stanton who was sitting to the right of him. “We also have your lawyer, Mr. Stanton, here on the call,” Parvis added before glancing back at the computer’s video camera.

On the other side of the call, almost 4,000 miles away, sat Warren Cold and Adriel Donovan. The pair were in an undisclosed location, one Ace had set up to ensure their location could not be traced, sitting on metal folding chairs. Warren held the phone so both Adriel and he could both be seen through the camera’s lens.

Warren remained silent, only nodding in acknowledgment that they could hear.

Agent Neal opened the manila file on the table all three men were seated at then looked back at the camera. “What I have here is a contract. Signing this, agreeing to this, would bind you all agreements listed. I won’t read all the legal jargon but your lawyer has combed through it meticulously. I’ll get to the gist of it…” he said, trailing off. “We can help each other. You two have landed yourself in quite the situation. We can help you get out of it and get back on U.S. soil as free men.”

Warren noticed Adriel sitting up straight in his seat. “What’s the catch?” asked Adriel, his tone neutral.

Agent Parvis raised his hands up in defense. “No catch but we do need something in return. I won’t sugarcoat this, boys. It’s not going to be easy, nor will it be safe. You could potentially get yourselves killed through this which the United States Government will not be held liable,” he explained.

Warren shook his head, glancing at Adriel who was listening intently.

“Long story short. There’s a criminal we want more than you two combined. Sources inform us that he’s located in Panama which we do not have jurisdiction in. You capture him, dead or alive, and we’ll handle the rest. If you fail, get killed, or anything other than completing this…then the deal is invalid, and we will be within our rights to continue to pursue you and capture you. If you’re interested, name your terms,” finished Agent Neal.

Warren held his finger up, asking for a short moment. He pressed the mute button on the call and placed the phone face down on the ground. “What are you thinking?” he asked Adriel whose face had paled.

Adriel didn’t look at Warren. He had his hands clasped behind his head, his head tilted up towards the ceiling. “I want to go home. I want to take Cataleya home. She deserves it,” was all he said, sighing heavily then glancing at Warren. “I know you want to get back and actually live.”

Warren chuckled lightly, shaking his head. “Alright then. I got your back and you got mine,” he told him before picking up the phone again and unmuting the call.

“Full immunity for Warren Cold and myself. My wife, Cataleya, also comes home with full immunity. If I fail or if I am killed…” Adriel started, swallowing hard though his facial expression was stern. “…she still gets to come home, full immunity. I want my criminal record and my brother’s, August Donovan’s, wiped clean. Not even as much as a parking ticket should be on it. Guarantee me that and I’ll sign.”

In the back, Jameson Stanton was writing down the amendments to the contract. He was writing on the document, highlighting and dating the note then looked at the agents who were speaking amongst themselves.

“You’ve got yourself a deal,” Agent Neal stated.

Warren hadn’t released he was holding his breath until he could visually see Adriel’s shoulders relax out of the corner of his eye. He nodded then glanced through the phone screen at the agents.

“So who are we after?” Warren asked.

There was a smirk that spread across Agent Parvis’ face. He turned the file so he could see the photo of their target. “This is Allan Esteban Hidalgo Jimenez, wanted for human trafficking. Wanted across seven countries, he’s been known target young girls. They range anywhere from ages 11 to 17. He grooms them for profit. Sexual services in nature and also, mules for transporting drugs, often selling to clients. Take him out and we’ll take care of bringing down the entire operation,” stated Agent Parvis.

Adriel immediately recognized the man but didn’t utter a word. He was sick to his stomach, the rage within him starting to fuel the fire.

Warren didn’t acknowledge any of the information being given until the last photo was shown of known associates. There, right before his eyes, was the picture of Julieta. His stomach immediately knotted up, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. “Of course,” he said, looking at Adriel. “It’s always the fucked up ones that seem to find me.”

The photo of the beautiful woman was Julieta Jimenez, the same girl he had been dancing with months ago at a bar called Tito’s, the night he went out with Adriel in an attempt to bury his grief.

“Fuck me,” was all Warren could say.

I know, I know, Britain only has like three actors, but there’s a big overlap in people who have played in Pride (2014) and in Call the Midwife. Of course, it’s nearly impossible for a British actress to not have been in a Call the Midwife episode since there are 12 seasons.

Maybe I’ve missed somebody but so far I’ve spotted

Neal Barry - who played Maurice Glenon, the guy who got that tropical disease and Patsy travelled all the way to Glasgow (?) for the medication - in Pride he’s the guy in the car who thinks he’s smart and gets epically shut down by Hefina

Liz White - who plays Rhoda Mullocks, we all remember her from several episodes as the mother of three kids, her youngest, Susan, maimed by Thalidomide  - in Pride she’s Margaret Donovan, head of the hosting commitee

Jessie Cave - who played Connie Manley, the mom who had Sister Evangelina badgering her about breastfeeding until she bled - in Pride she’s Zoe, one of the vegan lesbians

Monica Dolan - who played Maeve and Meg Carter, the twins from the market stall in a stunning performance - in Pride she’s the ever worried and unprepared for her son’s true feelings mother of Joe

Laura Matthews - who played Hayley Balk, and I can’t remember more about her character - in Pride she plays Joe’s sister, who unknowingly outs him to his family

I love both the movie and the show and now I’m off rewatching some season 6 to find who out who Hayley is...

Listed: Blue Ocean

Bay Area three-piece Blue Ocean plays exuberantly discordant yet surprisingly mild-mannered noise pop, not unlike what a TV Personalities record might sound like if it were playing through a box fan that’s tumbling down the stairs. In his review of last year’s self-titled LP, Chris Liberato noted how suddenly the dynamics at play in the band’s songs can change, writing of “Human Now”: “You won’t be able to help but smile when a big bombastic synth chord comes lumbering across the song, from out of nowhere, with the enthusiasm of a sedated puppy — and then decides to stick around for a couple of encores.” Hot off the announcement of their Slumberland debut, Fertile State (out in October), band members Rick Altieri, David Stringi and Neal Donovan pop by to share a few words about some of the records they love.

Snapper — S/T

Found years ago, during a visit to Brooklyn, NY. I instantly gravitated to the vibrant and colorful slashes of paint, which abstractly splayed themselves across the front cover. The songs are very colorful as well, painted with electrifying rhythms and arpeggiating synth leads. “This would make a great gift for a couple of friends of mine.” Maybe someday Flying Nun will re-release it.

Dummy — EP2

I find myself listening again and again to this second installment from Dummy, sonic enthusiasts based on the West Coast. The opening track “Thursday Morning” introduces itself quite charmingly with its creative and concentrated vocal melodies. Followed blissfully by deep layers of noise and feedback within a clever collage process.

Rick’s Picks:

M. Sage — Paradise Crick

This album was a surprise find in the first half of 2023 for me, I was actually listening to the single “Crick Dynamo” before the album was released and remember my ears really perked up. I know M. Sage himself just did a Listed recently, what a lovely surprise — huge new fan of his work. I love the line walked between sonic lab experimentations and organic leafy strollings by a river; right up my alley.

Bill Evans — Coffee and Cigarettes

I always come back to Bill Evans when I’m in the mood for calming jazz that still demands your attention and challenges you in many ways. His playing on this record reminds me a lot of Debussy, another go-to when trying to unwind. Evans is one of my all-time favorite piano players.

Lifetones — For A Reason

Charles Bullen of This Heat went on to make this post-punk/dub hybrid classic with Julius Cornelius Samuel in 1983 — This Heat had just broken up the year before. The rhythmic syncopations and droning cyclical vocal delivery make every song on this record a mesmerizing journey. The lyrics are profound in their simplicity, dealing with human interaction and nature.

Neptune — Gong Lake

This record will always be special to me. Neptune was one of the first bands I remember seeing with Dave when I moved to Boston in 2008. They were playing in the basement of Gay Gardens, an old DIY spot in Allston. I was instantly blown away by the barrage of rhythmic noise and impressed by the homemade guitars and effects they had fabricated. They’ve been a huge influence on Dave and I for years now.

Emeralds — Does It Look Like I’m Here?

A Midwest synth classic. When I listened to the song “Candy Shoppe” again recently I was even more moved than ever before, a good sign that this 13-year-old album stands the test of time. This album fluctuates between gritty acidic synth-scapes and ambient movements in the vein of early Eno. I love Imaginary Softwoods too, John Elliot’s solo project post-Emeralds.

Ananda Kumar — Mangala Vadhyam Vol. 3

A friend with roots in Tamil Nadu told me about the nadaswaram, a double-reed instrument played at weddings and religious festivals in Southern India. I love how intense and cutting the sound is. This recording features two nadaswarams in semi-improvised conversation with each other. I'm reminded a bit of the groove and excitement of traditional New Orleans jazz. Also, the thavil drumming is insane, reminiscent of Aphex Twin breakbeats.

Jed Wentz — Telemann: 12 Fantasias for Flute

Telemann's fantasias for solo flute are so cool. Although they were published in the 1730s, there's something that feels very modern about having just the flute to focus on. The player is asked to jump around throughout the range of the instrument, sometimes outlining melodies and basslines simultaneously. It's all the more impressive on the keyless, wooden, baroque flute which has a mellower sound than modern metal ones. I imagine it as portable music that someone could play anywhere.

Sheer Mag — Compilation

My partner threw this on when we were cleaning out our last apartment. I'm not usually a big fan of riff-driven guitar rock, but this album just got me. The licks are smokin’, the guitar tones are perfection, and I love the mix— just gritty enough.
