Thinking about a time early on well Cass is still struggling to learn how to speak, where maybe she understands most of what people say to her, but she still can't make her voice form the words the way it should, and someone snaps at her about it. Maybe Barbara is frustrated with how long it's taking, or she can see the disappointment in Bruce's expression, or Tim makes a misguided joke. And she doesn't say anything, both because she can't and because she doesn't know what to say even if she could, she just retreats to her room.
Dick is the one to find her. He knocks before he enters, but he doesn't wait for an answer. He asks if it's alright for him to come in, but only after the door is already opened so she can simply nod. He sits on the bed with her, and for a long moment he doesn't say anything. When he does it's softer than Cass has ever heard from him. Maybe from anyone. "You know, Bruce and Babs, they want what's best for you, and to them that obviously means you need to learn how to speak so you can interact with people. But speaking isn't the only way to talk."
Cass frowns, but that just makes Dick smile a little. "I had a friend once who couldn't speak. His vocal cords had been cut when he was a kid, so he used sign langue to communicate."
And when Cass doesn't protest Dick goes on. He tells her about Joe, about the boy who was raised by assassins but had the heart of an artist. Who seemed to know what everyone around him was feeling and exactly how to help without having to be told. How even though the entire team learned sign langue so he could talk to them, most of the time Joe preferred to just sit and listen anyway, how he'd only interject when he had something important to say. It wasn't because he was mute, it was just the way Joe was, and that was okay. They enjoyed just having him there with them, a friendly presence and a kind smile. He stops just short of telling her how Joey died.
Dick signs every word he says as he talks, and Cass watches. Not just the signs, but Dick as well, the way he talks about his friend. The small smile despite the sadness in his eyes. Even the signs themselves seem to be caring, they're precise, but not automatic. Dick is thinking about every single one, remembering Joey with each movement.
When he's done Cass smiles in return and nods, accepting the unspoken offer.
Sign langue is still hard, it's still learning a new langue and her brain isn't prepared for that, but at least her hands don't fight her the way her mouth does. She can mimic the signs perfectly, it's just about remembering them and what they mean. Luckily Dick is always more than happy to show her.

Jericho: Direct Quotes from 1984-1991
Tumblr media
Joseph Wilson, AKA Jericho, was created by Marv Wolfman and George George Pérez for The New Teen Titans.
Joe is mute and DC has varied their care in portraying that. In his original appearances Joe is fluent in sign language, and that is his preferred way of speaking. However, even though Joe is constantly signing, the comics do not always translate his signing for the reader to follow.
I set out to collect specifically direct quotes from his original slate of appearances. From his intro in Tales of the Teen Titans #42 to just before Titans: Hunt, stopping at The New Titans #69. This list collects either direct translations of his signing, or quoted thought/bubbles, with their punctuation preserved.
This does not include his ability to talk using the voice, verbiage, and tone of the unconscious person he's possessing (a power used a lot right at his introduction, which then tapers off), or the times when he is shown to be signing but we are not given a direct translations of said signs.
This also does not contain his narration in The New Teen Titans #47, which is Danny and Joey reading the auto/biographies of the Titans Joe has written. This is only because that would be a transcript of the entire issue, and I don't think I can fit that in a post.
Finally, this list does not include any spoken quotes from Titans: Hunt, where he was inexplicably able to speak verbally. I didn't include those for two reasons: 1. While there are a few moments when it's clear Joe is speaking and not the Souls of Azarath, ultimately they are both influencing eachother, so we can't be sure it is only Joe's words and verbiage. 2. This post is intended to function as an record of how little Joe was able to express himself in his own/preferred language.
I've included the full quotes, issues they're from, and a brief summery of what Joe is referring to, so beware of spoilers. Where I could not summarize the conversation, I have included Joe and the person he's talking with's dialogue.
I've tried to organize these quotes chronologically, but I may have made a mistake or missed a few. If you spot any, let me know; I'd love for this post to be as accurate as possible.

Sneaker Pimps, 6 Underground from Becoming X (1996).
Tumblr media
In 1996, I had a crush on Kelli Dayton Ali's voice. Her voice is an ASMR experience, for me. It sounds like that feeling after really good sex. It sounds like the taste of good whiskey and a cigarette. It sounds like . . . a moment.

I'd love to know just what DC Comics has against Joe Wilson / Jericho. One would think, in this era, they'd find SOMEWHERE that he'd fit naturally into the storytelling.
-The Titans are being pushed to greater prominence in the comics & IRL
-A couple years ago, DC had a whole event based around Slade Wilson / Deathstroke, his father
-DC is trying to do better w/ diversity, rep & inclusion (Jericho is bi & disabled [mute])
And it's not like he's useless; he's trained w/ both Deathstroke & Nightwing, plus gifted w/ metahuman powers to possess others' bodies.
Yet, he's been AWOL since Christopher Priest finished the character's brief role in his Deathstroke solo comic & his even more brief role in the live-action Titans TV show (except for the recent appearance w/ Galaxy in an art splash page for the 2024 Pride).
Where is this man's solo comic miniseries and/or graphic novel and/or lasting role in an ongoing Titans comic? Jericho is so cool; it's a shame DC is sleeping on the character!

With nothing to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson), king of the gods, and unleash hell on earth. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, can Perseus accept his power and defy fate to create his own destiny? Wrath of the Titans picks up 10 years on from his heroic battle with the monstrous Kraken, with Perseus now living a quiet life by the sea with his young son. But war is raging between the gods and the Titans, and Perseus learns of a treacherous plan for world domination by his power-hungry uncle Hades and godly half-brother Ares (Édgar Ramírez). No longer able to ignore his calling, Perseus joins forces with warrior queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Poseidon's demigod son Agenor (Toby Kebbell) and fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy) to enter the underworld, rescue the banished Zeus and overthrow the Titans once and for all.
