I’m genuinely surprised to know that there are no officially released Mattel products for Barbie that reference Jewish religious or cultural customs. I genuinely would have thought that there would be at least one by now - at least as a part of a collectors series, if nothing else.
This comes as a particular surprise as the creator of Barbie, Ruth Handler, and Barbie’s namesake, Ruth’s daughter Barbara, were Jewish women. In fact, when Saudi Arabia commented on the ban on the sale of Barbie dolls, one of the reasons given for this is that Barbie was Jewish.
Most of the mass market Barbies produced around the December season tend to be marketed as secular “Holiday” Barbies rather than naming Christmas or any other religious celebration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think it’s fair to say a lot of these dolls appear Christmas-adjacent, using iconography associated with e.g. Santa, candy canes and Christmas trees.
And there are some that explicitly refer to Christmas or Easter, though typically with a lean to the less religious aspects of the holiday, like gift giving and egg collecting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there are Barbies that have been released themed around religious and/or cultural celebrations from around the world - just to name a few, there are Barbies to celebrate Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Dia de los Muertos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So personally, I think Barbie is overdue for a Jewish culture Barbie - what do you think?

headcanon that james swore that he's never going to die during a holiday. back on the 31st of october, he was celebrating diwali, a holiday that brought him close to his natal lands, to his blood family, for the first time with his wife, the woman he'd love forever, and his newborn son, hari, the boy he loved like the light of his eyes

Is it really a desi diwali if you didn't get sets of sweets/dry fruits/chocolates from one person and then forwarded it unopened to another??

Yeah diwali is about firecrackers, diyas and new clothes and lanterns, but it's so much more. It's also about dressing up with your bestie while fighting over who was late, and watching how every balcony is adorned with festive lights flickering, it's about jhumkas and bindi and about making tiny paper lanterns, and clicking 17k pictures, and smiling and laughing with family, and complaining about calories to mum while sneaking out another kaju katli. Diwali <3

I will be very honest that I do not know much about the holiday of Diwali, but I have seen a handful of signs locally for celebrations occurring on November 12. I am given to understand that it is a light festival though this is approximately the limit of my knowledge.
In 2006, as a part of the Festivals of the World series, Mattel released a Barbie to represent Diwali.
Tumblr media
The Festivals of the World collection was a bit of a strange one, as there are some tonal differences between different festivals represented in the collection. For example, on the back of the box you can see Diwali being displayed alongside Kwanzaa and Oktoberfest.
Tumblr media
This was not the first time that Mattel explored this area. I have found multiple articles referring to Mattel creating a Diwali doll in 1998 as part of an attempt to expand the Barbie line into India; I haven't been able to find this doll specifically, but there are a number of Barbie in India and Expressions of India dolls from around this era.
Tumblr media
The articles linked above are critical of Mattel for showcasing a stereotypical and at times inaccurate/disrespectful display of Indian culture, including the claim that the 1998 Diwali Barbie I can't find had blue eyes.
Of course, there's no way to know if Mattel were earnestly trying to showcase diversity and falling short, or if they were just trying to market to a new audience. We can make our assumptions, but we don't necessarily know for sure.
If anyone who has more knowledge and understanding of this area I would really appreciate their input. My apologies if any of the above is controversial or incorrect; please correct me if so.

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, signifies the victory of illumination over obscurity, virtue over vice and wisdom over ignorance. It is a period for families to reunite, host giant feasts and exchange presents with one another. Diwali embodies and emphasizes a celebration of the triumphant victory of good over evil.
