not commenting on that post about the AIDS retroviral injection directly but people here (again) don't totally understand the staggering cost of R&D for any medicine that successfully makes it to market, nor that there are government programs and programs run by the manufacturers themselves that will cover the cost of these drugs and ensure that the companies that produce them don't all go, you know, bankrupt
#i work in a different field but like. the average cost of the materials that i use on a weekly basis? thousands of dollars. of disposables.#the equipment itself that i use probably totals in six figures#im not even TOUCHING any of the pharmaceutical reagents that these companies use#somebody on the post was saying they got all their R&D money from [checks notes] a bicycle ride fundraiser in the year 2000?#HELLO????

Oh while I'm on U.S. economics, I have another thing that bugs the hell out of me: the hiking of mortgage interest rates.
For those who don't know, mortgage interest rates dropped low during the pandemic. Which is not all sunshine since it resulted in many bidding wars and a ton of way-over-asking offers in competitive areas, but it put home-ownership way more within reach for a lot of people.
Then the fed started to pee their pants over inflation, and hiked their rates up, prompting mortgage companies to follow.
Here's a chart of mortgage interest rates over the last 4 years
It hit a trough at 2.65% on average in early January 2021, and then you see it hiked itself way back up, now chilling at 6.27%
For context on how different these are: let's use an example of a $400,000 home - someone pays 20% down ($80,000) in cash, and finances the remaining 80% ($320,000).
Monthly payments at 2.65%:
This results in paying back, in total, $464,040. You'll notice that's well over the initial $320,000, and that's because of the interest paid over those 30 years.
Now, monthly payments at 6.27%:
This results in paying back, in total, $710,640. That's more than twice the initial loan of $320,000.
And, of course, it means the same exact property which could be paid for with a monthly budget of ~$1,300 in early 2021 now requires a monthly budget of ~$2,000 in 2023.
Also, those pandemic lows were an anomaly... Historically, mortgage interest rates were on average HIGHER than 6.27% - but also, historically, wages were much better relative to the prices of homes and people could afford the high interest rates (with the exception of the people who got screwed over in the 2008 housing market meltdown... There's a really good Cold Fusion video on that.)
And because these low interest rates were an anomaly, they may never come back...
So with mortgage interest rates going up, home-buying becomes harder. When home-buying becomes harder, rents increase (because renters have no alternative).
So who DOESN'T get affected?
ENTITIES THAT CAN PAY IN ALL CASH.
They need no mortgage. They pay the sticker price on-spot with no interest applying to them. And I say ENTITIES because, sure, some people can buy their home in all-cash. But a huge number of the entities that can buy in all cash are BIG investment companies--the Blackrocks and the Mega-landlords who scoop up properties to sit on, rent out, and turn for a profit later like it's a piece of stock, and not a habitable property...
Anyway I don't have a conclusion for this. Fix wages, or bring interest rates back down, or kill Blackrock. Preferably all 3.
#Federal Reserve shivering quaking 'but if poor people have disposable income then companies will have no CHOICE but to price-gouge and#turn record profits and fuel inflation... theres no helping it... we have to make#everything harder for poor people...'#gonna start a bingo card if this breaches containment and sparks an argument on libertarian tumblr

Haunted items AU! Shadow Company
So the SC brainrot server talked about an AU of KIA Shadows being attached to items they liked a lot and I wrote one with Orion :3 (copied from dc so pardon the mistakes)
Not usually what I would write but I hope it flowed well enough!
-
There was a rumour in the base to never go into the room of a Shadow formerly known as Shadow 2-15 but with how more new Shadows have been recruited now, there was no other choice but to assign the room to some of them.
The room looked fine, some dust and perfectly fine furniture as if it was never used. One thing caught their eyes though, the box under the bed used by Shadow 2-15.
It gave off bad vibes even from the get-go but they all agreed to not disturb it and nothing happened the first weeks of their stay other than the knocks from the box.
However the longer they stayed in the room, it seemed that whatever was in that box got bolder. Every night, desperate fists hit the beds one by one with a voice accompanying it.
"Le t me out" It said.
It went on to the point where the rookies felt frustrated and finally opened the damned box. In it was a pristine keris, evidently well taken care of but the yellow cloth that was wrapped around it was unraveled which gave them a foreboding feeling.
"Let's put it away, yeah" One of them nervously said, not liking the sight of the traditional Javanese weapon in an American PMC base. Shadow 2-15 was a Malaysian with a Javanese lineage too...
"No, I'm burning this cursed thing!" The one in front of the box exclaimed as he snatched the keris up alongside the cloth.
And burned it, he did.
Their nights were calm since then, no more knocking or ghastly voice asking to be let out... until it came back. The dagger was back but how? It was burned! Handle turned to ash and blade blackened with ashes! Yet it laid on the table and untouched like the day they opened the box.
"I am nOT tHAT eASiLY DISpoSed OF..." A disembodied voice growled from behind them, the dagger suddenly bled until the red liquid pooled with a stench that they would only smell on missions.
-

[Image of what a keris would look like]
So yeah, Orion would totally haunt his favourite keris and unknowingly activate his family's pact with a jinn or sumn (common in malaysia during the past)
#zante's stars#zante's writings#shadow 2-15#shadow company ocs#shadow company#silly au#what happened after? idk#cod#cod mwii#so these do exist here and theyve specific ways to dispose of!#it is recommended to throw them away in a flowing body of water#pls dont pick up anything wrapped suspiciously in yellow or black cloth in SEA guys /srs

me: oh man, i really need to get this assignment done
also me: i wonder what dead by daylight terror radius would be the most fitting for some of the popular SCPs if they were added to the game. let me go through every single theme and make a list
the aformentioned list, by the way:
SCP-939 "With Many Voices/Dog": The Dredge
SCP-049 "Plague Doctor": The Nurse
SCP-096 "Shy Guy": The Twins

SCP-079 "Old AI": The Singularity
SCP-173 "The Sculpture": The Xenomorph (Alien)
#imagine an SCP-035 skin for the legion 👀#also i *would* have chosen the demogorgon's theme for 939 but i was thinking about SCP: Secret Laboratory's version of 939 at the time#banger game btw if you like lethal company SCP: SL is like that but you're even more disposable#also i think SCP-939 would be a good licensed killer since the others mostly instakill or kill people in unorthodoxed ways#anyways enjoy i spent like 1 & 1/2 hours doing this because i run on procrastination#scp#dbd#dead by deadlight#secure contain protect#scp 049#scp 035#scp 096#scp 076#scp 106#scp 079#scp 173

8 19 24 for writer’s asks
8. if you had to write a sequel to a fic, you’d write one for…
ironically i was noodling on a sequel fic for 'the letters of your name' the other night!! which is mostly weird bc that's one of the fics that's in my "I hate it for no clear reason" bucket. In general, I don't really fuck with sequels as a reader or a writer because I like a story to stand on its own BUT the fic I've written that I'm most like "but the sequel!!!" is 'til my feet are memory.' GOD i want the huaqing gay chicken to exist. the version of it that i had planned and then completely failed to write any notes for was brilliant in my memory!! (<- does not remember 99% of what was supposed to be in there)
19. the most interesting topic you’ve researched for a fic
oh man I've researched a lot of random shit 😂 I read so much poetry for MDZS and TGCF fics. I did do a lot of superficial astrobiology research for apoapsis but that also just stressed me out a lot (the worldbuilding makes no sense!! what do you MEAN the only life forms are worms and yet the world looks like that??? WHERE IS THE WATER COMING FROM). I've researched historical toilets a lot too?? soil types for sequence the bones...ancient prostheses for a variety of stories...a lot of TCM for mdzs/tgcf/woh...researching Chinese sign language for whipstitch was frustrating because I couldn't find a lot of good sources (esp re:regional dialects).
It's rarely the things you'd expect to cause a rabbit hole that do in fact cause a rabbit hole, but also i can make a rabbit hole out of anything
24. how do you recharge when you’re not feeling creative?
I mean, the good and the bad thing is that I just kinda do many things. So I read a lot, I dance, I go for a run, I knit, I do home renovations, I practice piano, I lay on the couch and watch random thematically relevant media.
Mostly, if I'm feeling stumped in one area, I just switch to another—I draw instead of writing, I run instead of drawing, I dance...irrespective of how I feel about dance actually lol. And when I'm feeling super drained/out of motivation for like...generative activities, then I read more or I watch TV or I play piano. sometimes I fuck around on canva or with video editing for something different.
writing fanfic is very much a time-sensitive endeavor for me because once I run out of steam on a fandom, I pretty much never return (there are a few exceptions), but with every other creative endeavor I do...like I've been doing it since I was 7 or 8 years old (at the latest), and so I can let it rest for a little bit knowing that it'll return.
writer asks
#i've been writing since i was ~6#drawing before that#dancing since i was 4#playing piano since i was 8 and flute since i was 10#photography since...well. i don't actually know when i got my first disposable camera but i got my first little point and shoot at like#10 or 11 i think?#and so in some ways#most of my hobbies are kinda like my plants#in that they are just a part of my life and who i am. like i am very diligent about practicing my arts#but it's also just...sometimes you need to let something rest for a little bit and not try to push yourself back into doing it ig#and so usually my ''recharging'' is just flexing a different creative pursuit for a bit#if i am really burnt out on all creative stuff (e.g. last year)#it's a sign that something is wrong (e.g. being part of a kind of shitty company)#writer ask game#asked & answered#okay fr i have to finish copy editing this spreadsheet :'(

I think autistic traits would be very common and generally pretty accepted among trains. Tbh they’re usually more just a natural variation than a “condition” for them. It’s just precedent that it’s hard for steam engines to work together vs alone (and if they do they use a very set, unambiguous system of whistle codes). And while it’s definitely not ideal if a diesel or electric engine can’t MU with others, they’re also not useless because of it and railroads tend to be very “waste not want not” places that will find some place for them. Train communication worldwide is usually nonverbal and follows strict rules, be it signals, horn/whistle codes. I think Starlight-style trains especially use a lot of hand based communication and signing, I mean it’s widespread among the cast irl.
Wanting to do the same thing day in and day out is a great thing (trains on heavily automated lines tend to act “more autistic” because of this). Trains in areas with more emphasis on advanced signalling and sensors are probably more prone to the equivalent of sensory issues… though because it’s so ubiquitous in their areas it’s only a problem if they go to the US or something where things come way too close or track conditions are too rough and they shut down.
Weirdly enough, roller coasters are probably the “most autistic” of all trains. They do the same thing day in and day out and have sensors on top of sensors. They will shut down if you touch their restraints the wrong way or if a bee flies in front of an optical sensor or if the wind’s too strong. A lot of “breakdowns” on irl coasters are just sensor faults vs physical issues. It’s kind of funny how on the nose that is when I think about it. Similarly repetitive peoplemover-type trains or other tracked amusement rides are probably up there too for similar reasons, but I don’t think they’re as sensitive.
#vaguely based on how this kind of thing was quietly accepted at the train museum i worked at#they just didn’t question if you had weird social skills#the equivalent of other conditions probably aren’t as accepted among trains but again. Waste not want not. they’ll usually try SOMETHING#to try and remedy or work around it. trains are generally very non-disposible and companies are heavily invested in making them work#i also take inspiration from how some older-school or government heavy industry is kind of that way#It’s really hard to get them to fire you vs try and find something you can do
