not commenting on that post about the AIDS retroviral injection directly but people here (again) don't totally understand the staggering cost of R&D for any medicine that successfully makes it to market, nor that there are government programs and programs run by the manufacturers themselves that will cover the cost of these drugs and ensure that the companies that produce them don't all go, you know, bankrupt

Oh while I'm on U.S. economics, I have another thing that bugs the hell out of me: the hiking of mortgage interest rates.
For those who don't know, mortgage interest rates dropped low during the pandemic. Which is not all sunshine since it resulted in many bidding wars and a ton of way-over-asking offers in competitive areas, but it put home-ownership way more within reach for a lot of people.
Then the fed started to pee their pants over inflation, and hiked their rates up, prompting mortgage companies to follow.
Here's a chart of mortgage interest rates over the last 4 years
Tumblr media
It hit a trough at 2.65% on average in early January 2021, and then you see it hiked itself way back up, now chilling at 6.27%
For context on how different these are: let's use an example of a $400,000 home - someone pays 20% down ($80,000) in cash, and finances the remaining 80% ($320,000).
Monthly payments at 2.65%:
Tumblr media
This results in paying back, in total, $464,040. You'll notice that's well over the initial $320,000, and that's because of the interest paid over those 30 years.
Now, monthly payments at 6.27%:
Tumblr media
This results in paying back, in total, $710,640. That's more than twice the initial loan of $320,000.
And, of course, it means the same exact property which could be paid for with a monthly budget of ~$1,300 in early 2021 now requires a monthly budget of ~$2,000 in 2023.
Also, those pandemic lows were an anomaly... Historically, mortgage interest rates were on average HIGHER than 6.27% - but also, historically, wages were much better relative to the prices of homes and people could afford the high interest rates (with the exception of the people who got screwed over in the 2008 housing market meltdown... There's a really good Cold Fusion video on that.)
And because these low interest rates were an anomaly, they may never come back...
So with mortgage interest rates going up, home-buying becomes harder. When home-buying becomes harder, rents increase (because renters have no alternative).
So who DOESN'T get affected?
ENTITIES THAT CAN PAY IN ALL CASH.
They need no mortgage. They pay the sticker price on-spot with no interest applying to them. And I say ENTITIES because, sure, some people can buy their home in all-cash. But a huge number of the entities that can buy in all cash are BIG investment companies--the Blackrocks and the Mega-landlords who scoop up properties to sit on, rent out, and turn for a profit later like it's a piece of stock, and not a habitable property...
Anyway I don't have a conclusion for this. Fix wages, or bring interest rates back down, or kill Blackrock. Preferably all 3.

Haunted items AU! Shadow Company
So the SC brainrot server talked about an AU of KIA Shadows being attached to items they liked a lot and I wrote one with Orion :3 (copied from dc so pardon the mistakes)
Not usually what I would write but I hope it flowed well enough!
-
There was a rumour in the base to never go into the room of a Shadow formerly known as Shadow 2-15 but with how more new Shadows have been recruited now, there was no other choice but to assign the room to some of them.
The room looked fine, some dust and perfectly fine furniture as if it was never used. One thing caught their eyes though, the box under the bed used by Shadow 2-15.
It gave off bad vibes even from the get-go but they all agreed to not disturb it and nothing happened the first weeks of their stay other than the knocks from the box.
However the longer they stayed in the room, it seemed that whatever was in that box got bolder. Every night, desperate fists hit the beds one by one with a voice accompanying it.
"Le t me out" It said.
It went on to the point where the rookies felt frustrated and finally opened the damned box. In it was a pristine keris, evidently well taken care of but the yellow cloth that was wrapped around it was unraveled which gave them a foreboding feeling.
"Let's put it away, yeah" One of them nervously said, not liking the sight of the traditional Javanese weapon in an American PMC base. Shadow 2-15 was a Malaysian with a Javanese lineage too...
"No, I'm burning this cursed thing!" The one in front of the box exclaimed as he snatched the keris up alongside the cloth.
And burned it, he did.
Their nights were calm since then, no more knocking or ghastly voice asking to be let out... until it came back. The dagger was back but how? It was burned! Handle turned to ash and blade blackened with ashes! Yet it laid on the table and untouched like the day they opened the box.
"I am nOT tHAT eASiLY DISpoSed OF..." A disembodied voice growled from behind them, the dagger suddenly bled until the red liquid pooled with a stench that they would only smell on missions.
-
Tumblr media
[Image of what a keris would look like]
So yeah, Orion would totally haunt his favourite keris and unknowingly activate his family's pact with a jinn or sumn (common in malaysia during the past)

Well, I now know what original story I'll be writing for Freedom February ...
👀🤖⛓️‍💥
Can't wait for people who use l33tspeak or are greek mythology nerds to immediately realize what is happening with the lore and are excited to see how it plays out.
#Freedom February#very VERY long rambly tags to follow#“robot slave rebellions are boring and cliche” -- maybe if you're not interested in writing interesting thought-provoking stories of#solidarity and intersectionality and caring about people who are different from yourself and actually talking#about the actual reality of what a future with enslaved sentient disposable people would look like for the robots AND the oppressed people#who are all going to be laboring under the hell that is capitalism turned up to 100? That we're already seeing glimpses of now#with AI replacing creatives at every turn and forcing people out of jobs to starve on the streets? Of “algorithims” victimizing and#traumatizing people who are being paid cents on the hour by american companies to moderate the most horrific content known to man???#If robots and AIs became sentient beings who exactly do you think is going to be the ones standing side by side with them???#it called all the other oppressed people who are treated like theyre not even human because they're of a different social class or#have a different skin color or speak a different language or werent born in a certain country#“robot slave rebellion” writtren in 2024-onwards is all going to be about solidarity and intersectionality#between the enslaved robots and the oppressed people who are kept downtrodden by the billionaires and upperclasses#This long ramble + my original idea are inspired by both#my delight at the transformers *fandom* actually doing something with Megatron being “evil” because he led a slave revolt against slavers#and also my ire at a peticular book series which had so much potential and shot itself in the foot#by repeatedly demonizing enslaved people and repeating the racist rhetoric#that enslaved people- if freed- will immediately violently enact slavery on their previous owners -- aka reverse racism in a nutshell!!!!#thats now how it works and if youre insiting it is in 2024 sorry but youre part of the problem'

8 19 24 for writer’s asks
8. if you had to write a sequel to a fic, you’d write one for…
ironically i was noodling on a sequel fic for 'the letters of your name' the other night!! which is mostly weird bc that's one of the fics that's in my "I hate it for no clear reason" bucket. In general, I don't really fuck with sequels as a reader or a writer because I like a story to stand on its own BUT the fic I've written that I'm most like "but the sequel!!!" is 'til my feet are memory.' GOD i want the huaqing gay chicken to exist. the version of it that i had planned and then completely failed to write any notes for was brilliant in my memory!! (<- does not remember 99% of what was supposed to be in there)
19. the most interesting topic you’ve researched for a fic
oh man I've researched a lot of random shit 😂 I read so much poetry for MDZS and TGCF fics. I did do a lot of superficial astrobiology research for apoapsis but that also just stressed me out a lot (the worldbuilding makes no sense!! what do you MEAN the only life forms are worms and yet the world looks like that??? WHERE IS THE WATER COMING FROM). I've researched historical toilets a lot too?? soil types for sequence the bones...ancient prostheses for a variety of stories...a lot of TCM for mdzs/tgcf/woh...researching Chinese sign language for whipstitch was frustrating because I couldn't find a lot of good sources (esp re:regional dialects).
It's rarely the things you'd expect to cause a rabbit hole that do in fact cause a rabbit hole, but also i can make a rabbit hole out of anything
24. how do you recharge when you’re not feeling creative?
I mean, the good and the bad thing is that I just kinda do many things. So I read a lot, I dance, I go for a run, I knit, I do home renovations, I practice piano, I lay on the couch and watch random thematically relevant media.
Mostly, if I'm feeling stumped in one area, I just switch to another—I draw instead of writing, I run instead of drawing, I dance...irrespective of how I feel about dance actually lol. And when I'm feeling super drained/out of motivation for like...generative activities, then I read more or I watch TV or I play piano. sometimes I fuck around on canva or with video editing for something different.
writing fanfic is very much a time-sensitive endeavor for me because once I run out of steam on a fandom, I pretty much never return (there are a few exceptions), but with every other creative endeavor I do...like I've been doing it since I was 7 or 8 years old (at the latest), and so I can let it rest for a little bit knowing that it'll return.

... Part of life of "living on a rock in the ocean in middle of nowhere" is the reality of Sorting Trash. Under the cut because I'm going to talk about real-life stuff like Where Your Used Tampon Goes
Every object that enters or exits the Rock must be hand-carried, including all food, possessions and toiletries, both directions. The only exception (sometimes) is solid & fluid human waste, but it's not always an exception because many visitors are Teenage Boys who like to find the weirdest thing to poop in possible.
And then yes their poop is sorted too.
As are all pads and tampons. Including the ones that get flushed, because they have to be cleaned out of the pipes and pumps by hand. This particular Rock sees several thousand visitors per year, and unless you take your personal trash home with you, it will be sorted.
Metals, glass, five varieties of plastics, fabrics/clothing, shoes, an enormous volume of travel-size to Costco-size hygiene product bottles, every single food container imaginable, and anything that can possibly be burned.
If it burns, it burns. If it is food/biodegradable it biodegrades. If it is sewage it septic tanks. If it recycles or goes to the dump, it gets boxed, bagged and crated and put on a barge to be carried to the mainland and driven to the processing station once a week. (Tampons burn but baby diapers do not.)
My job is 99% desk related so today was my first day on trash-sorting rotation and man. Nothing like a front-row seat to what two hundred people go through and jettison behind them in five days! The other reality of this particular Rock is that if it goes into you, onto you, around you or through you, it will end up in the ocean. (With the exception of, if at all possible, any kind of pharmaceutical product, if it's recognized on the sorting table)
Every food, soap, body wash, oil, shampoo, cleaner, hairspray and sunscreen, everything your body wears, eats and excretes. If you wear it, it washes off in the ocean. If you eat it, your (post-septic) waste goes into the ocean. If you leave it behind, the container will be recycled but the contents will be emptied into the ocean. It's a microcosm of the reality of everywhere that happens invisibly for most middle-class-and-up; but here, it's a little more immediate - Yes we just dumped so much liquid hair products into the ocean. You can dump it all at once, or you can dump it as rinsed off in the next hundred washes, but it'll get there one way or another. Today or tomorrow.
It all goes out with the tide.
Really, really makes you think about the liquids and solids in your life.

I'm waterboarding the CEO's post because this corporate-speak "talent density" shit is what makes any tech sector worker's stomach churn.
I don't think there can be any doubt that Automattic is profit-first silicon valley nightmare company like any other, and the CEO claiming there will be No Layoffs but cheerfully fostering the kind of on-edge high-turnaround tech company culture that will shitcan anybody who threatens high-efficiency "talent density".
New parents (especially mothers), the even slightly disabled, people experiencing the natural ups and downs of life outside of Just Work. I'm thankful there are even minimal laws protecting these people because otherwise ph*tomatt and his cohort would eat them alive.
"The best open web tech team" for who? Certainly not the people in it?
This sent me to glassdoor where the general vibe from employees is that things have been great, but the CEO's attitude towards them is making people crazy. If they've fostered an internal culture that works, where they enjoy working there and the people they work with, and then photo "Elon Musk Had The Right Idea" matt starts dreamily talking about "small, talent dense teams" I think I'd go insane.
Disclaimer: this is not a personal attack on the CEO or his management team. This is a criticism of conditions in the industry they define every day. Which sucks.

also the difference in orchestration vs the original vs later (movie) add ins is really interesting to me. we're subbing in something good in place of an ordinary couple in act ii and it has FOUR instrument changes between EH and oboe within the one number (a whopping 89 measures). only Once in the entire rest of the score (all original to the stage show. we didn't get the rights to i have confidence lol) is there an instrument change mid-number (it's during the dance in sixteen going on seventeen)
