A live-action remake of Disney's Moana (2016) has been officially announced, and while I will have to wait for the movie to come out to know if I like that, I definitely have an OPINION on the choice of the actress for Moana.
I know Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as Maui, which is awesome, but I'm not 100% sure if Auli'i Cravalho will play Moana again.
I personally think, though, that Bailey Bass would be great for the role, given her performance and experience she got from making Avatar 2.

I think i reblogged/liked this post before but I don’t remember, but something just came up and made me found and remembered reading about this from years ago and I completely forgot about it.
Moana-Nui-Ka-Lehua the Mermaid/Goddess was one of the smaller stories I found years ago back when I was super deep into mythology, interestingly enough Maui is involved in this story too, but I still don’t think Moana (and any of her family) the disney character(s) was based off of any existing Polynesian mythology, unless if I missed some sources, but she’s just Disney’s original character.
Also the story is weirdly in-character too lmao he was fishing in her waters, that pissed her off, she took his fishhook, that pissed him off.
So apparently there IS a Moana in Polynesian mythology...
Now, I am aware that this would not completely confirm that the title character of the Disney film IS based off a mythological character, and I had to look at a couple sources to make sure that what I learned was correct and there were an INSANE number of coincidences to make me think about this. Anyway, I gave a friend of mine a book on mermaid mythology and when I read about the myths in the southern seas, I found this tale. (Here is a slightly abridged version of it).
There was a mermaid/goddess named Moana-Nui-Ka-Lehua, who lived near the Hawaiian islands and she apparently had the power to create storms (so she has a direct connection to the sea). Although the story says that she guarded a certain channel with the aid of two companions, they were apparently two shark deities (sadly not a pig and a rooster).
Hmm… what was one of the creatures Maui transforms into again in the film? Anyway, she also once created a storm to prevent the Goddess Pele (the most likely inspiration for Te Fiti) from having a relationship with a human, which seems to be a well known story.
Then it gets better-she actually DID encounter Maui (or at least THIS version out of the many other versions of Maui). The story said that when he was fishing in her waters, she tried to snag his fish hook on a rock to stop him. So he chases after her and when he takes her ashore upon capturing her, she dies. However, he respects her and lays her body upon a shrine and her spirit eventually turns into a ohi’a lehua (a type of tree in Hawaii).
Of course, it seems that there is another myth regarding how that particular tree came into existence and it came from the spirit of another character.Like I said, I am not completely sure that Moana was based off this character and I don’t even know if I got my facts correct about the mythological character. If my information is not accurate, then I apologize.
However, it would have been very interesting if Moana was partly inspired by Moana-Nui-Ka-Lehua, who seems to share similarities to the original tale of the Little Mermaid. There were so many insane coincidences when I found this tale that I WANT to believe its possible. I want Moana to share some sort of connection to a character from a tale or story like the other Disney princesses before her, but I understand that she is also a representation of a country or part of the world with amazing cultures, like Merida from Brave is. I would not say that Moana, Brave, or Hercules are THE best representations of those cultures (especially when you change important elements to their original tales), but rather they introduce others into a culture we might have never been curious enough to learn more about on our own.
Believe me, I wouldn’t have had as much of an interest in looking into certain stories, novels, or myths and having a better appreciation for them if I hadn’t grown up watching Disney films as a kid. Or as a grown up, for that matter.

I know we all roast the Disney direct-to-video sequels but at least those were new stories which required some semblance of creativity on the part of the filmmakers, however half-assed they ended up being. Now they’re remaking movies that came out literally five minutes ago.
