October books :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The metamorphosis by franz kafka ☆☆☆☆☆ : first time reading a novel by kafka, not a fantasy novel (as i initially thought) or sci-fi or what not but it's depicting kafka's philosophy about humans & human relationships. As well as a dig on capitalism. A great short novel, a must read in my opinion.
The diary of a young girl ☆☆☆☆: she was such an intelligent & articulate girl, a loss that her life was tragically cut short. Despite this being one of the best selling books of the 20th century i was hesitant to read it for a while, one because it's 400+ pages long diary written by a 12~13 year old, two...it's a diary & three and most importantly, i knew it's gonna be heartbreaking & it was. But i'm glad i did read it, it's an important book about an important real life event and real people. It was very immersive, well written and i was eager(& anxious really) to flip the page every time to know what's gonna happen on the next day.(Also was all 13 yrs olds this articulate back then ??? )
The unabridged journals of sylvia plath ☆☆☆☆☆ : ever since i read the bell jar last year i been obsessed with anything sylvia plath so i decided to read these journals and truly understand her; i didn't expect this to be so vivid, raw and honestly relatable. I still didn't finish it, i'm taking my time with this one. She definitely inspired me to pick up my abandoned journal & write again with better journaling entries instead of the usual 'i woke up. I ate. I slept.' I'm enjoying journaling way more now. wish i could write like her though; what a fascinating woman.
La peste (the plague) by albert camus ☆☆☆: i started this book around mid october and with everything that's been happening in palestine, i wasn't in the mood to read anything tbh; it's why i haven't read as much as i planned to. I'm halfway through it and i don't think it's my favorite camus book but i need to finish it before making a definitive decision. So far it's a 3 star rating, it's not my fav but also not terrible either ( obviously i mean it's camus )

No book is as sad as Diary of a Young Girl. I remember reading this book when I was in junior school and being hooked. The concept of journalling was not new to me but the idea that someone was quite literally pouring every emotion out into her diary was fascinating. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read the pages of Anne’s diary. Random dates and incidents I’ve memorized because they meant something to me. It reminds me of how unfair life can be sometimes. How easy it is to take for granted, the bare essentials of life like food, water, shelter and freedom to exist.

did anyone else form a very personal connection to the diary of Anne Frank in middle school and feel like you were holding your breath your whole fifteenth year only to realize you were outliving her, continue to outlive her, continue to grow like she deserved to and you die a little inside or is that just me

Anne Frank was born on this day in 1929 - if she had survived the holocaust she may have been celebrating her 94th birthday today. i’ve been going over what i want to say all month and i’m not sure. it’s hard to put into words a feeling of connection i feel to someone i never met, never even lived at the same time as, let alone experienced the same level of horrific events. but despite the clear differences in our lives, i’ve felt a strong to connection to anne since i first read her diary when I was 10/11. if you also get special interests, this feeling may be understandable to you. visiting the anne frank huis was a spiritual experience for me. i saw so much of myself in her and she made me feel like i wasn’t alone. we were both hugely ambitious, cheeky, big fan girls, often feeling misperceived. i carry her words in my heart, they feel so engrained in my being.
Anne deserved the life she dreamed of - of becoming a famous movie star or author. My heart breaks thinking of everything she had left to offer the world and all the experiences she should’ve had. i read the other writings anne did in the secret annex for the first time last year and i was struck upon reflection when i was deciding what to draw for her birthday, how many of her stories ended with a girl finding peace in nature. i don’t take for granted every aspect of my life that she envied in hiding and now, when i’m in nature, i think of her and wish that heaven really does exist, or maybe even an alternate universe where anne gets to be in the nature she dreamed of. knowing there’s nothing i can do to change the past leaves me feeling so much grief, but i at least hope i can contribute to keeping anne’s memory alive.

If I'm engrossed in a book, I have to rearrange my thoughts before I can mingle with other people, because otherwise they might think I was strange.

Aren't they all stupid! We aren't allowed to have any opinions. People can tell you to keep your mouth shut, but it doesn't stop you having your own opinion. Even if people are still very young, they shouldn't be prevented from saying what they think.

I don’t want to have lived in vain like most people. I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I’ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death!

if i see anymore if all refer to her as a “bi icon” i’m decking you
I will ALWAYS be protective of Anne Frank and how people speak about her or depict her. She was a child who was murdered, she's not your allegory, life lesson, punchline, or book character.

Nazi dumbfuck
No. Nazi dumbfucks killed Anne Frank. And probably leagues more Jewish kids in her neighborhood.
Like how kids in Gaza and West Bank today are being killed by the IDF.
I want her legacy not to be bastardized or weaponized to invalidate the Anne Franks of today documenting their own survival in real time.
