I find this terrific movie. And rate it very highly. An important movie, if you like.

There’s just one thing I found a bit off with it. With that of the other main character – the brunette lady who is employed by Hitler as a secretary.

Her real-life character is interviewed at the end. And she says something like, she didn’t know how much of a monster Hitler was, before she started working for him. Hmm. Really? She had no clue whatsoever that he was a tyrant?

Because she will have heard his speeches. And those tirades were laced with about as much hatred as possible.

I’ve just always been dubious about that. She really had no inkling whatsoever that this man was evil? I doubt it. It’s still a fantastic film. One of the great war movies.

Can we all appreciate this one scene in Downfall where Eva announced the party in the Reich Chancellery and Burgdorf actually ran to the front on the line whooping like a child. This is a 50 year old man and he is literally a blur on the screen going woowoowoowoo!!!

Here's something starkly different from what I usually post, but I thought about filling the silence of my blog with some tidbits about my favorite movie.

In one of the scenes of this excellent historical drama, we see how, during Eva Braun's letter-monologue to her sister, Adolf Hitler’s (Bruno Ganz) adjutants burn the leader’s personal correspondence. Otto Günsche (Götz Otto, on the right) smokes a cigarette, but upon seeing the leader, reluctantly throws it into the fire.

This directorial choice was dictated by Hitler’s real opinions. In his youth, he was a heavy smoker—he smoked 20 to 40 cigarettes a day—but decided to quit the habit due to financial circumstances. Throughout his career, he was a staunch opponent of smoking. He often expressed concern about the smokers around him, including his lover and later wife, Eva Braun. Although he did not ban smoking in the Wehrmacht ranks, he openly stated his disapproval. A quote from March 2, 1942:

"It is not true that a soldier needs to smoke to survive."

During the height of his party's rule, German doctors conducted the country’s first studies on the harmful effects of smoking, which resulted in funding and later dissemination of the findings. The anti-smoking campaign in Germany lasted throughout the National Socialist rule until the fall of Berlin, depicted in the film.

It is said that even a broken clock is right twice a day. Whatever one may say about the circumstances, the funds for research contributed to the development of medical knowledge on the effects of smoking and were invaluable for the advancement of oncology.

Burgdorf, who held the position of Chief of Army Personal Office and adjutant for the army to Hitler made a remark about purging Catholic officers.

When General Heinrici, commander of the army group which included General Busse’s 9th Army, travelled to Hitler’s bunker in 1945 to report on the situation of the 9th Army, his pleas were ignored by Hitler and mocked by Burgdorf.

By the way ... her YouTube channel may have been deleted, but luckily someone was able to recover her videos and uploaded them to the internet archive, so at least they aren't entirely lost. You can just download them as a zip file here and keep them for yourself forever <3

Also here's her old channel banner, obviously all credit goes to her (I'm generally against reposting art but since her channel doesn't exist anymore it's the only way), I just wanted to include some supporting visuals in case the name rings a bell for someone but you can't quite pinpoint it. I love her style it's so cute and silly😭
