Towing an Eastbound manifest towards Denver, Colorado is Rio Grande 5371 and two other SD40T-2 "Tunnel Motors" as the train rumbles along through Grand County, Utah. No. 5371 would later find life working under Southern Pacific and Union Pacific with out being patched or renumbered. It was retired in March 8th, 2008 and was then donated to the Utah State Railroad Museum where the locomotive remains today.

New Toys!
During the last few weeks a couple of new items were added to the rolling stock roster of my model railway. As per usual I had totally forgotten having “pre-ordered” them over a year ago. Model train manufacturers tend to announce new future projects with an option for the customer to “pre-order”. This pre-ordering process gives the manufacturers a rough idea on how many model train enthusiasts…

OC Post 8 - The Traveller
Another possible Doozy, The Traveller is an episodic anthology universe where every "Episode" centers around its own self-contained story, with the linking factor being a mysterious steam engine known only as Mutt. Because of the nature of this universe, i'll jot down a description of each "Episode" and then describe the characters. So let's begin!
"Chomping At The Bit" - The introductory episode. A Sharknose diesel has somehow found his way to the Rio Grande, and he desperately wants a promotion from his current lowly position. Mutt decides to help the poor engine by mentoring him on some basics for a few days, but also not letting the shark grow attatched to him. The episode contains a few vauge hints to Mutt's mysterious past and why he's a drifter.
Tumblr media
"The Amazing Technicolor Paint Job" is a very loose adaptation of the musical of a similar name. Joseph gets a new coat of paint with some interesting properties, but it leads to him being exiled by the others out of jealousy until it saves them all big time by providing a temporary tourist draw when the freight work dries out. In the story, Mutt consoles the exiled switcher and helps him take pride in himself once more, before leaving with a mysterious warning about the upcoming crisis.
Tumblr media
"Brotherly Love" - A PRR M1 named Maxwell is being followed by one of his deceased siblings for no apparent reason. Maxwell unravels the mystery behind his deceased sibling, and confronts him on the bridge. Mutt shows up as cameos throughout the episode but most notably appears near the end when he pushes a line of cars into the posessed M1, stunning it and saving the MC, who was about to get cronched. After that, the Entity is banished and the dead M1 is properly put to rest.
Tumblr media
"High Class Pooch" - When Mutt comes across a particularly rough-riding P30CH, he takes it upon himself to help the poor engine out, while also accidentally revealing some interesting truths about his own past.
Tumblr media
"Hound Dog" - A 50's story of a bitter rivalry between two Union Pacific giants - a Big Boy and a first generation GTEL. The two engines are very competitive over the concept of modernization, with Mutt initially helping the Big Boy as the two try to prove the other as a fraud. However, when the Big Boy tries to get Mutt to directly sabotage the GTEL, it reminds him of some of the reasons he gave up his old life, and Mutt, seeing the writing on the wall for both of them, leaves to two to quarrel on their own.
Tumblr media
Some of the characters appearing in these stories are as follows:
Mutt - This engine is like a weird stray that keeps turning up in random places, a mysterious drifter who usually does a valiant act before disappearing somewhere else before he can be fully identified or rewarded. Some say that he has a secret hideout or a home base to fall back on, but nobody has found it yet.
Tumblr media
Reese - An enthusiastic but troubled diesel that Mutt comes to the assistance of, this Sharknose becomes a fish out of water upon inexplicably ending up on the Denver & Rio Grande Western. While eager to prove his worth, he has issues applying himself to his work, which he ultimately overcomes.
Tumblr media
Joseph - A small diesel switcher graced with a unique paint scheme that has interesting properties around cameras. Despite being humble and agreeable, his coworkers eject him from their shed until he proves his worth when a decline in goods traffic makes his unique draw become the only thing to keep their railroad afloat.
Rueben & Simeon - A 45 tonner and a Model 40 respectively, these two were rather jealous and stand-offish when Joseph received his new paint, going so far as to kick him out of the roundhouse they lived in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maxwell - A rather regular M1 still reeling from the sudden loss of his brother, Maxwell soon finds himself entangled in a plot of posessons, ghosts, and demonic entities. He soldiers his way through and is ultimately able to find peace for himself and his brother.
Tumblr media
Marley - Formerly Maxwell’s closest brother, Marley unfortunately suffered a catastrophic internal mechanical defect and passed away suddenly. After becoming a restless spirit when his dead body was taken over by a strange entity to stalk his brother, he is eventually able to pass on in peace when the entity is banished and his brother is able to come to terms with his passing.
Tumblr media
The Entity - An entity taking on Marley’s body, preventing his soul from being properly put to rest. His motivations for stalking Maxwell are unknown, but he is swiftly vanquished regardless.
Tumblr media
Papillion - Another troubled diesel that we see Mutt assist, this P30CH is very eager to work but struggles with getting excited and distracted, leading to derailments.
Tumblr media
With all the charactes out of the way, have a super duper secret lore moment!
"..."
"Y'know, I was a high-class pooch once."
Tumblr media
"Wasn't the life for me. Too many.. fake people."
Tumblr media
"I don't mind my current lot one bit."
Tumblr media
"Because what I do now is real work."
Tumblr media
To end off, have a Cronchy photo of Mutt.
Tumblr media
I hope you enjoy these guys. I have so many ideas with this concept.
P.S: Very ironic that the character who canonically does funny things to cameras is also messing with tumblr's formatting lol

Gold And Silver por David Blazejewski Por Flickr: Due to 7470 being down for maintenance this year's annual Mass Bay RRE's 'Steam In The Snow' charter on the Conway Scenic Railroad was instead billed as 'Covered Wagons In The Snow' and it did not disappoint. The six car train was led west by CSRR 252 and traveled as far as the Notchland Inn where they reversed east to be lead back by the two original Boston and Maine F7s (4266 and 4268) owned by the 470 Railroad Club stopping for five photo runbys along the way. This route opened in 1875 as the Portland and Ogdensburg Railway and would remain an important through freight route for succesor Maine Central until 1983, known for most of its life as the Mountain Subdivision. Shuttered for a dozen years it was purchased by the State of New Hampshire from MEC Guilford Transportation in 1994 and revived by 1996 to become a wildly popular 25 mile extension of the little Conway Scenic. A few inches of fresh snow the night before made for a gorgeous scene despite the clouds as they head west at about MP 75.6 west of Sawyer River on the former Mountain Sub. GP38 252 is right at home here having been built in November 1966 for the Maine Central Railroad as part of an order of 13 of the model that were the first batch of second generation diesel locomotives purchased by the road. Ultimately she came to be the last one in service on successor Guilford Transportation, lasting more than three decades, and having seen her other dozen siblings retired and scrapped or sold. She came to Conway Scenic in March 2010 along with GP35 216 in a trade with Pan Am Railways for FP9s 6505 and 6516 that would become Pan Am's OCS power. Right behind her and decidedly out of place is dome car Rhonda Lee. Built by the Budd company in 1956 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad number 4735 it was originally named Silver Buckle and served on the Denver Zephyr. It passed to the Burlington Northern in 1970 and then was sold to Amtrak at startup in 1971 as 9457. It was retired a decade later and languished until being auctioned off around 1993. After undergoing a massive restoration it was renamed Silver Splendor in 1997 and served in excursion service for two decades based out of Anaheim, CA until being sold to the CSRR around 2019. Shortly after sunrise on January 30, 1966, here comes Rio Grande’s famous Ski Train, just past Rocky siding and ready to dig into the 2 percent grade that begins at Little Ten Curve. In the next few miles the five laboring F7’s – 7,500 hp in all - will lift 21 cars plus a steam generator some 350 feet to Coal Creek Canyon, the start of the real climb into the Rockies. Aboard today are some 750 restless, rowdy skiers, mostly kids eager to get onto the slopes at Winter Park. So rowdy, in fact, that starting next year the Grande will employ three deputy sheriffs to keep order on the train. Coupled just behind the diesels, the steam generator is a reminder of steam days, converted from the tender of one of the Grande’s big L-105 Challenger 4-6-6-4’s. Too long for station platforms in Denver, the 22-car train will eventually shrink to something more manageable and under UP in 2009 will disappear forever. Cost of a ticket in 1966: $3.10, round trip. Cost of a ticket today: Priceless.

Prouty and Glass Carriage Factory which sat at the corner of Brush and Elizabeth st. Wayne Mi. Now occupied by Ford Michigan Assembly plant and Boise Cascade. Few know that Wayne was a major producer of sleighs and carriages until cars put them out of business.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wayne's First Manufacturing Company
The Prouty and Glass Carriage Company, built on Sophia Street in 1888, was the first manufacturing company in the city. The company had been organized in 1881 by Fayette Prouty and John S. Glass and manufactured, carriages and sleighs. They moved to Wayne in 1888 and by 1889 had employed about 50 men.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The company underwent a reincorporation after a recession. George H. Stellwagen, became president; James R. Hosie; his business partner was treasurer; and William C. Prouty (the son of Fayette Prouty), was secretary and general manager. Augutus Stellewagen, replaced his brother as president, and was replaced himself by another brother, Jacob in until 1915. The company was in operation until 1915, when it was replaced by Harroun Motors, which produced automobiles from 1916 to 1920, when the factory was closed.
Tumblr media
The Harroun Motors Corporation raised $10,000,000 in stock to begin a car company. Harroun bought the buildings and equipment of the former Prouty and Glass Carriage Company in 1916 for $40,000. The old carriage factory was 80,000 square feet and used for paint and upholstery, and in 1917 Harroun built a new 1,220,000 square foot factory next door for all other processes. The company operated for 12–18 months producing 200 cars per day. There were three models offered, a roadster and a touring car (each priced at $595) and a sedan ($850), each powered by the company's own four-cylinder engine. Cars were only available with a green body, brown roof and black fenders and upholstery. The roadster was only available in midnight blue. The goal was to get the price of cars below $500 to remain profitable.
Tumblr media
In the spring of 1918 the company got a government contract to produce 200,000 artillery shells during World War I. The plan was to produce cars and artillery shells together in the factory, but the government sent an arbitrary order limiting the factory to only 25 cars per day. Harroun produced 23,899 155mm howitzer high explosive, Mark I, Type B shells for the war effort.
After the war, the company tried to get started again, creating a new model for 1920. Representatives took the car on a tour from Detroit to Montana and on to Denver to prove its reliability. The tour went well, but the company still closed in 1920. Fewer that 3,000 cars were built and two are known to survive. In 1923 the company assets were sold off and the factory bought by the Gotfredson Truck Company in 1924.
Tumblr media
1925 Gotfredson model 40
The Gotfredson & Joyce Company began in 1920 in Walkerville, Ontario, Canada. In 1923 the company moved to Wayne, MI and became known as the Gotfredson Truck Company.
In 1936, Gotfredson adopted GMC cabs for its trucks. These were ultra custom heavy duty vehicles produced in very small numbers, just five or six a year, and all for Detroit area customers. At the time, if a truck operator wanted a diesel-powered job, he had to go to a custom producer like Gotfredson to get it. The company continued to build these custom trucks in very small quantities until 1946 when production ended,

Tracking air pollution disparities -- daily -- from space
Studies have shown that pollution, whether from factories or traffic-snarled roads, disproportionately affects communities where economically disadvantaged people and Hispanic, Black and Asian people live. As technology has improved, scientists have begun documenting these disparities in detail, but information on daily variations has been lacking. Today, scientists report preliminary work calculating how inequities in exposure fluctuate from day to day across 11 major U.S. cities. In addition, they show that in some places, climate change could exacerbate these differences.
The researchers will present their results at the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
Air pollution levels can vary significantly across relatively short distances, dropping off a few hundred yards from a freeway, for example. Researchers, including Sally Pusede, Ph.D., have used satellite and other observations to determine how air quality varies on a small geographic scale, at the level of neighborhoods.
But this approach overlooks another crucial variable. “When we regulate air pollution, we don’t think of it as remaining constant over time, we think of it as dynamic,” says Pusede, the project’s principal investigator. “Our new work takes a step forward by looking at how these levels vary from day to day,” she says.
Information about these fluctuations can help pinpoint sources of pollution. For instance, in research reported last year, Pusede and colleagues at the University of Virginia found that disparities in air quality across major U.S. cities decreased on weekends. Their analysis tied this drop to the reduction of deliveries by diesel-fueled trucks. On weekends, more than half of such trucks are parked.
Pusede’s research focuses on the gas NO2, which is a component of the complex brew of potentially harmful compounds produced by combustion. To get a sense of air pollution levels, scientists often look to NO2. But it’s not just a proxy — exposure to high concentrations of this gas can irritate the airways and aggravate pulmonary conditions. Inhaling elevated levels of NO2 over the long term can also contribute to the development of asthma.
The team has been using data on NO2 collected almost daily by a space-based instrument known as TROPOMI, which they confirmed with higher resolution measurements made from a similar sensor on board an airplane flown as part of NASA’s LISTOS project. They analyzed these data across small geographic regions, called census tracts, that are defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. In a proof-of-concept project, they used this approach to analyze initial disparities in Houston, and later applied these data-gathering methods to study daily disparities over New York City and Newark, New Jersey.
Now, they have analyzed satellite-based data for 11 additional cities, aside from New York City and Newark, for daily variations. The cities are: Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Seattle, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. A preliminary analysis found the highest average disparity in Los Angeles for Black, Hispanic and Asian communities in the lowest socioeconomic status (SES) tracts. They experienced an average of 38% higher levels of pollution than their non-Hispanic white, higher SES counterparts in the same city — although disparities on some days were much higher. Washington, D.C., had the lowest disparity, with an average of 10% higher levels in Black, Hispanic and Asian communities in low-income tracts.
In these cities, as in New York City and Newark, the researchers also analyzed the data to see whether they could identify any links with wind and heat — both factors that are expected to change as the world warms. Although the analysis is not yet complete, the team has so far found a direct connection between stagnant air and uneven pollution distribution, which was not surprising to the team because winds disperse pollution. Because air stagnation is expected to increase in the northeastern and southwestern U.S. in the coming years, this result suggests uneven air pollution distribution could worsen in these regions, too, if actions to reduce emissions are not taken. The team found a less robust connection with heat, though a correlation existed. Hot days are expected to increase across the country with climate change. Thus, the researchers say that if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t reduced soon, people in these communities could face more days in which conditions are hazardous to their health from the combination of NO2 and heat impacts.
Pusede hopes to see this type of analysis used to support communities fighting to improve air quality. “Because we can get daily data on pollutant levels, it’s possible to evaluate the success of interventions, such as rerouting diesel trucks or adding emissions controls on industrial facilities, to reduce them,” she says.
The researchers acknowledge support and funding from NASA and the National Science Foundation.
