The 1988 poll to kill Batman's child sidekick, Robin, was inspired by an early example of interactive television: a 1982 Saturday Night Live stunt starring Eddie Murphy and a live lobster.

The April 10, 1982 Saturday Night Live show opened with a chef grabbing a live lobster from its tank, making it dance while humming the Star Wars theme, and then laughing while lowering it into a pot of boiling water. Just before the lobster was placed into the pot, Eddie Murphy appeared, grabbed the lobster out from the way of certain death, and turned to address the audience.

Rather than being boiled alive without protest, Larry the Lobster's fate was submitted to the arena of popular opinion and disposable money. The show's audience was presented with two premium-rate "900" phone numbers"—one for those who wanted to spare Larry, and another for those who wanted to see it boiled alive. Each call cost $0.50, and each caller could call multiple times.

The lobster's televised ordeal can be seen below in a compilation video. (Warning for human cruelty toward an animal.)

Updates on the vote count were given by other cast members throughout the live broadcast; by the end of the show, viewers had made over 400,000 calls. Ultimately the "Save Larry" supporters managed a narrow win against the "Kill Larry" supporters.

To kill a Robin

The SNL stunt stuck with DC Comics editor Denny O'Neil, and he proposed to fellow editor Jenette Kahn that they could reserve a similar stunt for killing off a high-profile DC Comics character. By the time of 1988, Batman's colorful child sidekick Robin had been considered a divisive character among the creative forces behind Batman and among Batman fans. After Batman writer Jim Starlin's unsuccessful campaign to kill off Robin in a HIV/AIDS storyline, O'Neil decided the problematic Robin was the perfect candidate for a "Larry the Lobster" stunt. Sales manager John Pope began calling AT&T to secure the two 900 numbers on October 1, 1987; it took him until March 1988 to reserve them.

Like in Larry's case, the voting results were extremely close. Unlike Larry, the outcome supported Robin's death over his survival.

Fun facts!

Larry the Lobster predates Jason Todd's existence. "Larry the Lobster" aired on 10 April 1982. Jason Todd first appeared in the Batman comic in 1983, and he made his first appearance as Robin several months later. This might add credence to the idea that the idea for a DC Comics death poll wasn't specifically conceived with Robin in mind.

Within a span of a single SNL show, a total of 466,548 premium-rate calls were made to decide Larry's fate.

Larry was spared by a margin of 11,644 votes. These votes cost a total of $5,822.00.

Robin was condemned to death by a margin of 72 votes. These votes cost a total of $36.00.

Both polls were decided by a margin of less than 1%.

A lobster's probable end

In the aftermath of the sketch, Murphy received letters protesting Larry's treatment. One letter made a racist jab at Murphy: "that man is sick, and I thought those people didn't like seafood."

To spite this racist comment, Murphy ensured that Larry's stay of execution was only temporary.

WESTWOOD, Calif. - The UCLA Bruins kicked off their football pro day on March 15, offering NFL scouts another glimpse at potential draft picks. UCLA head coach DeShaun Foster said, “We are getting so close to where dreams could edge closer to reality.” With the draft set from April 25–27 at Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza in Detroit, Michigan, anticipation ran high as players wanted to prove themselves in the most effective ways possible.

UCLA star defensive lineman Laiatu Latu's career path seems to be on an upward trajectory. Following a medical retirement due to a neck injury sustained at Washington, Latu's unlikely resurgence could position him as UCLA's potential first-round draft pick since 2018. Transitioning from being told he'd never play again to receiving much support within the NFL, truly made him feel that this moment was “life-altering” “Being around those top-rated guys at the NFL combine truly made me feel so special,” Latu said. Whether it was seeing 43 films by Doris Wishman and Ray Dennis Steckler that burned me out on cheap B-Movies or whether Bill Rebane's work and that box (Weird Wisconsin) sucked so badly, it is irrelevant, I cannot handle one more cheaply made B-movie. The last two Rebane movies (Demons of Ludlow and The Game) were so completely terrible I won't even watch the final two films in this box. The final two films are Twister's Revenge (which is a comedy about a talking Monsta' truck that chases criminals!) and a documentary titled Who Is Bill Rebane (I no longer care). This box goes immediately into the trade pile!

I'm not sure when I'll ever get around to watching From Hollywood To Heaven: The Lost and Saved Films of The Ormond Family and I almost wish I hadn't bought it (not to mention Myth, Magic and Mutilation: The Micro-Budget Cinema of Michael J Murphy (1967-2015) a box set containing 32 more B-movies). The things I think I want to see are suddenly coming back to haunt me.

Demri Lara Parrott was born February 22, 1969, the biological daughter of Kathleen Ann née Austin and Dennis Wayne Dougherty, but at the time of her birth, her 18-year-old mother had been married to Stephen John Parrott, aged 21, for 21 days. They had metthrough mutual friends.

Austin originally planned to name her Erin Lynn Austin (she liked the sound of it), but after she and Parrott got married, the name changed. Her husband didn’t like the name Erin, but he did like Lara. Austin thought she had heard the name Demery somewhere and suggested it. He asked her to write it down, and she spelled it Demri, adding Lara next to it. Parrott liked it, and when Demri was born the next day, the name stuck. [1]

Kathleen Austin: “She was definitely entertaining as a child. She never knew a stranger. Would approach anyone, anytime, anywhere at 2 years old. Her social interaction at that age was dominated by young adults. She is in my college yearbook, I am not. When she was two years old, when we were at my parents’ house, she would disappear into my parents’ bedroom. My mother has a full length mirror on her closet door. Demri would stand in front of the mirror, take whatever she could reach off the dresser and do commercials. ‘You need to buy this ‘cause it really-really works!’, etc. It was hilarious, and she would do it for hours if allowed. She was the first grandchild, and I won’t say spoiled, just well loved. My mom was 40 when she was born which I realize now was young, however it is so. At the time my dad had a special relationship with Demri, they were close. I’m happy they’re together now.” [2]

Years later, Demri would jokingly tell people that when her mother was in labor, the doctors had given her a shot of Demerol for the pain and she liked it so much, she named her daughter after it. Demri didn’t like her name at first, because people would mispronounce or mishear it. At the age of two, she had a strong enough sense of self to tell people her name and how to spell it. [1] Demri pronounced her surname Puh-row, not like the exotic bird.

When she was two, her grandmother had made her an angel costume for Halloween with a gold halo that went above her head. Kathleen Austin and her mother were taking Demri to her great-grandmother’s house so she could see Demri in her costume. During the car ride, Demri was tugging at the halo. “Demri, you’re going to mess up your hair, honey,” her grandmother told her. “But, grandma, the goddamn halo won’t stay up!” Demri’s grandmother almost drove the car off the road. [1]

Demri could communicate and socialize beyond her years. As a three-year-old, Demri was tested by experts at the University of Washington, who told her parents she had the vocabulary of a high school senior, but her exceptional language skills weren’t always well received by adults or other children.

Demri’s parents’ marriage did not last long. Austin later married a Child Protective Services caseworker and gave birth to their son, Devin C. Remme, on June 20, 1974. That marriage ended in 1976, and Austin would later marry Dennis Murphy, with whom she would have two children: Derek J. P. Murphy, born November 15, 1980, and David James Michael Murphy, born on June 12, 1982. According to her mother, Demri was closest to Devin and Derek – the oldest two of her siblings. Demri used her stepfather’s surname – going by Demri Murphy while growing up but never legally changed her birth name. [1]

The family moved to Arlington, a town about an hour north of Seattle.

When Demri was in grade school, her friend Nanci Hubbard-Mills says she was “boisterous, not afraid to speak her mind”. In an art class, the teacher had assigned them to make pumpkins and fruit out of clay. As a joke, Demri ignored the instructions and made a head with an arrow in it.

Karie Pfeiffer-Simmons met Demri when she was in fifth grade and Demri was a year ahead of her at Post Middle School and the two became friends about a year later. “She was very outgoing, very well-liked. Just petite, beautiful. She just lit up the room. She liked to be a class clown, get attention, and joke around. She would sneak out through the windows of the classroom and skip class. She was always doing funny things or charming the teachers so that she would get good grades that way.” [1]
