"Omen" (Originaltitel: "Augure") aus dem Jahr 2023 ist ein Drama, inszeniert von Baloji.

Koffi (Marc Zinga) gilt als besessen – zumindest in den Augen seiner Familie, die ihn daher als Zabolo, das Zeichen des Teufels, bezeichnet. Nach vielen Jahren der Ächtung kehrt er zum ersten Mal an seinen Geburtsort im Kongo zurück, um den Segen der Familie für seine Hochzeit mit Alice (Lucie Debay), seiner Partnerin in Belgien, zu erbitten. Doch die alten Konflikte brodeln noch immer unter der Oberfläche. Lediglich seine Schwester Tshala (Eliane Umuhire) stellt den kollektiven Aberglauben infrage. Koffi versucht, die wahren Gründe für seine Ausgrenzung zu verstehen und stößt dabei auf ein verborgenes Familiengeheimnis.

In seinem Regiedebüt beleuchtet der Musiker, Filmemacher und vielseitige Künstler Baloji eindrucksvoll, wie stark der Glaube das Leben seiner vier Hauptfiguren beeinflusst. "Omen" ist ein visuell beeindruckendes Werk, das Elemente des Surrealismus und magischen Realismus vereint – ein beeindruckendes Beispiel für die kreative Kraft des modernen afrikanischen Kinos.

Denis Mpunga & Paul K - Criola + remix EP (Music From Memory)

The work of the Belgian/Congolese duo Denis Mpunga and Paul K. is the subject of Music From Memory’s latest compilation EP, ‘Criola’. Combining elements of traditional African music with experimental electronics, the pair recorded and released only a handful of tracks, scattered across a few obscure LP and cassette compilations. Bringing together this material for the first time ‘Criola’ includes both released as well as unreleased material from the musician’s archives dating from between 1980-1984.

At a time when world-music was becoming hugely popular across Europe especially so in Belgium and France, the pair were keen to try and explore African music in a new contemporary way. Much like the intentionally provocative archival image, which Denis selected for the sleeve of ‘Criola’, the recordings set out to play with and challenge preconceptions and expectations of African music and African culture. Together, Denis Mpunga and Paul K.’s, if somewhat brief, musical adventure would create a fascinating new musical language, African music born out of an industrial European landscape; music which the compilation ‘Criola’ reveals as both wholly unique and visionary.

As well as the tracks featured on our 'Criola' compilation of works by Denis Mpunga & Paul K. We also received from them some great short sketches. Lasting mostly less than a minute and some even just a few seconds there was some great ideas but the 'tracks' seemed just too short to include on the compilation. So we decided it could be great to share these sketches with some of our friends and favourite producers along with the tracks included on 'Criola' with the idea that they would create a series of remixes or use these sketches as samples. The result is a six track EP with remixes/reworks from Tolouse Low Trax, Interstellar Funk, Prins Emanuel, Androo and Dazion.

Early 80s industrial beats synthesized with traditional African rhythms make for a deep zone experience on Criola, a collection of collaborative tracks between Belgian/Congolese duo Denis Mpunga and Paul K. Released on Music from Memory in 2017, Criola includes scattered and unreleased material which finds the Congolese-born Mpunga pairing guitar, bass, thumb piano, zither, vibes, and vocals with Belgian-born electronic luminary Paul Stas aka Paul K.’s brigade of synths and drum machines.
