Film | Raw - Review
World Cinema Month My ★★★★ review of Raw #MidweekMovie

Director – Julia Ducournau Starring – Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, Rabah Nait Oufella Genre – Horror | Drama Released – 2016 For her debut feature film, writer and director Julia Ducournau opted for a surprising and particularly taboo subject: cannibalism. Marieme lives in a poor Paris suburb with her mother, two sisters, and an abusive older brother. Her guidance counselor tells her that her grades aren’t good enough for high school. She can’t repeat the grade again; her only option is vocational school. She just wants to be normal. Frustrated with her lack of options, she joins a girl gang. Lady, Adiatou, and Fily show her how to get what she wants.
Girlhood (Bande de Filles) (2014) is a coming-of-age film about recognizing one’s power. Marieme, who changes her name to Vic, knows that her life is unfair. She hasn’t had the same opportunities as other teenagers, which is why she failed at school. Through the other girls, she learns that she can push people to get what she wants. What she comes to realize is that everybody works for somebody. The real power isn’t the ability to commit crimes, it’s solidarity among women.
This is a gorgeous film that does so many lovely things. I love scenes that linger, or where the camera moves fluidly from one shot to the the next. There are a few scenes that are just music and images without words, including an iconic dance scene set to "Diamonds” by Rihanna. One thing I love about foreign language films is hearing a crowd of people talk over each other without subtitles. That’s what the human voice sounds like with no meaning attached to the noises.
I saw Girlhood in a list of queer films, and while not explicitly so, it certainly has queer themes. Vic alters her gender expression to be more masculine and avoid attention from men. Her appearance changes several times throughout the film in significant ways.
There aren’t easy answers in this film. Like the experience of youth, it is a jumble of emotions that include joy, anger, sadness, fear, and love. It’s a real treat of a film.
