Personal highlights from...
Red vs Blue The Ultimate Fan Guide
In honor of s19 and the continuation of where s13 left off, here are some highlights from the ultimate fan guide published back in 2015. I've been re-watching the show and it made me want to flip back through the guide. (Everything is sort of in the order it appears in the book, with a few exceptions)
Delta appears as a guide of sorts with fun facts
Caboose's position is listed as "Team Rookie/Occasional Captain/ Church's Best Friend" (it is actually struck out in the book)
He is also the only one listed with the title Captain, appearing as "Private/Captain Michael J. Caboose" (due to Wash "promoting" him, in the canyon on chorus)

I spent the rest of basic chasing after her. In some ways, I never stopped.
Here's hoping non of our beloved idiots die in season 19! I mean, I know Church will be gone, but the others... they deserve a happy ending.

Religion The legalization of marijuana: Is the hysteria about the drug all smoke and no fire? The 18th Amendment, which prohibited the use of alcohol, is now regarded dismal failure. Its one 'success' in changing American civic life was the way it solidified the grip of organized crime upon the nation's urban landscape. However, prohibition of drugs, including marijuana, remains the law of the land in America today. America has always emphasized more punitive approaches to drug enforcement, even in comparison with its Western European counterparts, which have tended to stress treatment and management of addiction as a disease. Because marijuana use is particularly common, a disproportionate number of individuals convicted for drug possession are marijuana users. Ironically, marijuana is also considered to be the most benign drug of all illegal substances, thus most law enforcement efforts in the drug war have focused upon what some consider to be a relatively minor social problem. Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in the United States. According to the "National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 102 million Americans aged 12 or older have tried marijuana at least once in their lifetimes, representing 41% of the U.S. population in that age group" (Marijuana facts and figures, 2010, Office of National Drug Control Policy). Since 1990 alone, "nearly 5.9 million Americans have been arrested on marijuana charges, a greater number than the entire populations of Alaska, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont and Wyoming combined. In 2000, state and local law enforcement arrested 734,498 people for marijuana violations. This is an increase of 800% since 1980, and is the highest ever recorded by the FBI" (Legalization of marijuana, 2010, Legalization of marijuana). The majority of those charged with marijuana violations were charged with simple possession without intent to sell. "The total number of marijuana arrests for 2000 far exceeded the combined number of arrests for violent crimes, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault" (Legalization of marijuana, 2010, Legalization of marijuana). Keeping marijuana out of the United States is a time-consuming endeavor. "Most foreign-source marijuana smuggled into the United States enters through or between points of entry at the U.S.-Mexico border. During 2006, 1,115,710 kilograms of marijuana were seized along the Southwest Border. Cannabis cultivation in Mexico remains high and most of the marijuana produced in that country is destined for U.S. drug markets" (Legalization of marijuana, 2010, Legalization of marijuana). Proponents of legalization of marijuana allege that diverting human and legal resources to prosecuting users of a relatively harmless drug is counterproductive and unjust. But law enforcement agencies state that today's marijuana is considerably more potent than the drug used in ages past. There is a widespread increased "prevalence of higher potency marijuana, measured by levels of the chemical delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)…Average THC levels rose from less than 1% in the mid1970s to more than 6% in 2002. Sinsemilla potency increased in the past two decades from 6% to more than 13%, with some samples containing THC levels of up to 33 per cent" (Marijuana facts and figures, 2010, Office of National Drug Control Policy). Opponents of legalization argue that people who base their opinions of the drug on their memories of the 1960s and 1970s counterculture fail to understand how the marijuana 'industry' has changed over the years. Additional confusion about the drug's negative effects may be due to the varied way users and abusers imbibe marijuana. "Marijuana is a green, brown, or gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). The main active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). Short-term effects of marijuana use include problems with memory and learning, distorted perception, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, loss of coordination, increased heart rate, and anxiety" (Marijuana facts and figures, 2010, Office of National Drug Control Policy). Marijuana can be inhaled through a cigarette or pipe, brewed into tea, and baked into foods, and the potency level can vary wildly, depending on how it is ingested. Additionally, people may use marijuana for very different reasons: some for medical reason as a palliative, others for purely recreational reasons. Advocates of continued enforcement of existing drug policy state that marijuana is a 'gateway drug' to harder drug use. A "2002 SAMHSA report, Initiation of Marijuana Use: Trends, Patterns and Implications, concludes that the younger children are when they first use marijuana, the more likely they are to use cocaine and heroin and become dependent on drugs as adults. The report found that 62% of adults age 26 or older who initiated marijuana before they were 15 years old reported that they had used cocaine in their lifetime" (Marijuana facts and figures, 2010, Office of National Drug Control Policy). But it could be argued that correlation is not synonymous with causality. Simply because a child using marijuana at a young age is more likely to use harder drugs later on in life does not mean that marijuana physically or psychologically motivates the later drug abuse. Rather, it could be other factors in the child's life, like a lack of parental supervision, spurs the initial use and that children more likely to encounter marijuana at a young age are the victims of other social factors that promote later hard drug abuse. Proponents of legalization point out that the marijuana use is widespread and many users do not become addicts. Results of a Center for Disease Control (CDC) 2007 survey indicate that 38.1% of high school students reported using marijuana at some point in their lifetimes and 47.5% of college students and 56.7% of young adults (ages 19 -- 28) surveyed in 2007 reported lifetime use of marijuana. Furthermore, some of the arguments against marijuana use could also be made against alcohol abuse, say marijuana's defenders. But unlike controlled and recreational use of alcohol, it is uncertain if there is any 'safe dose' of marijuana. "Marijuana abuse is associated with many detrimental health effects. These effects can include respiratory illnesses, problems with learning and memory, increased heart rate, and impaired coordination. A number of studies have also shown an association between chronic marijuana use and increased rates of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, and schizophrenia. Long-term marijuana abuse can lead to addiction. Studies conducted on both people and animals suggest marijuana abuse can cause physical dependence. Withdrawal symptoms may include irritability, sleeplessness, decreased appetite, anxiety, and drug craving" (Legalization of marijuana, 2010, Legalization of marijuana). While recreational legalization is unlikely in the near future, some states have moved to legalize the ability of doctors to prescribe medical marijuana as a painkiller, or to combat the loss of appetite associated with some medical treatments, such as chemotherapy. Marijuana has a palliative effect and the potential for abuse -- just like some prescription medications. Advocates of medical marijuana support doctors prescribing the drug to individuals suffering chronic pain for whom other efforts have failed, like people with MS and cancer -- and also for glaucoma sufferers, as marijuana is claimed to help some of those who are afflicted with the ailment. However, reluctant physicians counter that no reliable studies have supported the supposed benefits of medical marijuana for any of these illnesses. "While smoking marijuana may allow patients to temporarily feel better, the medical community makes an important distinction between inebriation and the controlled delivery of pure pharmaceutical medication. The raw (leaf) form of marijuana contains a complex mixture of compounds in uncertain concentrations, the majority of which have unknown pharmacological effects" (Medical marijuana fact sheet, 2009, White House). Remember that "delicate immune systems of seriously ill patients may become compromised by the smoking of marijuana, and may be damaged while the patient is still struggling back to health" (Medical marijuana fact sheet, 2009, White House. The chronically ill may be more prone to dependence, because of chronic pain or psychological complaints that accompany or gave rise to their ailment. It is questionable if the desperately sick should not be encouraged to try a potentially dangerous drug for the respiratory functions. "The daily use of marijuana compromises lung function and increases the risk for respiratory diseases, similar to those associated with nicotine cigarettes" (Medical marijuana fact sheet, 2009, White House). A patient who uses marijuana for pain relief during cancer treatment may leave him or herself more vulnerable to contracting other cancers. Furthermore, in response to those who argue that they have been nonresponsive to legally prescribed painkillers, "Marinol, the synthetic form of THC (the psychoactive ingredient contained in marijuana), is already legally available for prescription by physicians whose patients suffer from pain and chronic illness," and there is no need to embark upon a slippery slope of legalization (Medical marijuana fact sheet, 2009, White House). The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that marijuana has no medical value as determined by Congress "in the case of the Controlled Substances Act, the statute reflects a determination that marijuana has no medical benefits worthy of an exception outside the confines of a government-approved research project" (Legalization of marijuana, 2010, Legalization of marijuana). Even proponents of medical legalization concede marijuana cannot cure or even alleviate the symptoms of MS or glaucoma, merely act as a narcotic. True, other narcotics exist on the market today -- and like marijuana, they are also addictive. Whether they are more or less addictive than marijuana remains uncertain, but advocates say the chronically ill should be able to choose what works best for them while opponents say only tested, carefully titrated drugs should be used as palliatives. Weighing the rights of the sick with marijuana's long and short-term side effects is a delicate balance. When marijuana is smoked, users often suffer similar short as well as long-term problems to those of regular smokers, including a smoker's cough and breathing problems. In fact, "marijuana smoke contains 50% to 70% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke" (Legalization of marijuana, 2010, Legalization of marijuana). The active agent in marijuana, THC, has been linked to short-term memory loss: 4th graders who tested equally on tests of memory and were retested in 12th grade has notably poorer performance, relative to their peers, if they admitted to being heavy marijuana smokers, although once again proponents of the drug argue that correlation does not imply causality: marijuana smokers may simply be part of a demographic group less focused upon grades than non-smokers (Medical marijuana fact sheet, 2009, White House). Advocates of legalization for medical use have a likely 'alternative' agenda, critics contend, namely full legalization, which would be a disaster for society. "Smoking marijuana leads to changes in the brain similar to those caused by cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. All of these drugs disrupt the flow of chemical neurotransmitters, and all have specific receptor sites in the brain that have been linked to feelings of pleasure and, over time, addiction. Cannabinoid receptors are affected by THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and many of these sites are found in the parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement" (Medical marijuana fact sheet, 2009, White House). But even if one concedes the point that marijuana use on a recreational level has largely negative effects for the user, and its medical benefits are dubious, some economists argue that the U.S. is losing a potential source of revenue: just like 'sin taxes' on alcohol and cigarettes yield high levels of revenue. "Marijuana legalization -- replacing prohibition with a system of taxation and regulation -- would save $7.7 billion per year in state and federal expenditures on prohibition enforcement and produce tax revenues of at least $2.4 billion annually if marijuana were taxed like most consumer goods. if, however, marijuana were taxed similarly to alcohol or tobacco, it might generate as much as $6.2 billion annually" (Moffat 2010). Marijuana use may be problematic, but the loss of revenue it generates for the state regarding law enforcement, and the financial benefits regarding future taxation mean that a new policy is required. If marijuana use was legalized in such a wholesale fashion, however, the logistical aspects of regulating legal use seem nightmarish. "Does legalization of marijuana mean its sale to any willing buyer should be legal? What about the sale of legal marijuana to youth? We have not done a good job of keeping alcohol and cigarettes out of the hands of young people. There is a simple reason that it is rare to hear a description of the mechanics of marijuana legalization: all of the ways marijuana can be made legal are either ridiculous, or frightening, or both. In addition, the U.S. has international treaty obligations not to legalize marijuana, or any other illegal drug, for non-medical use" (DuPont 2007). Granted, the legal aspects of drug enforcement and policing are frustrating in terms of their bureaucracy and often arbitrary nature. But policing taxation and distribution of marijuana in a legal fashion on a wide scale would seem even more difficult within the U.S. However, the Dutch have taken a very different attitude than the Americans and most of their European counterparts: "Dutch drug policy is unique in the whole world. It is directed by an idea that every human being may decide about the matters of its own health…Another idea which guides Dutch laws in their drug policy is a conviction that hiding social negative phenomena does not make them disappear - on the contrary makes them worse, because when concealed, they become far more difficult to influence and control" (Amsterdam drugs, 2005, Amsterdam Info). Marijuana is considered a 'soft drug' in the Netherlands, and is thus legal. Ensuring that drugs are legal also enables better quality control, and reduces toxicity and overdoses for users. This ensures that the drug is not sold to minors, and is used in a relatively controlled fashion. Large scale cultivation is forbidden, although skeptics question whether the widespread use of cannabis could really be supported by 'home' growers, and contend that the Dutch are still part of the worldwide drug trade (Amsterdam drugs, 2005, Amsterdam Info). Growing sympathy for individuals with terminal illness in the U.S. suggest that some states may legalize marijuana, perhaps in a non-inhalant form to reduce the risks of smoking. But on a wide-scale basis, for recreational use, there are logistical questions if a nation as large and diverse as the U.S. (in contrast to the small, law-abiding nation of the Dutch) would benefit from expanded legalization. However, if marijuana continues to be illegal, that means a continued drain financially in enforcing a widely disregarded, mocked, and perhaps unenforceable law. A shift overall in drug policy to treatment, or reducing demand, rather than punishment or supply-side tactics seems more beneficial, although drug treatment and medical treatment of users is also expensive. Cannabis
In the United States, cannabis is legal in 39 of 50 states for medical use and 24 states for recreational use. At the federal level, cannabis is classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act, determined to have a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use, prohibiting its use for any purpose. Despite this prohibition, federal law is generally not enforced against the possession, cultivation, or intrastate distribution of cannabis in states where such activity has been legalized. Beginning in 2024, the Drug Enforcement Administration has initiated a review to potentially move cannabis to the less-restrictive Schedule III.
The medical use of cannabis is legal with a medical recommendation in 39 states, four out of five permanently inhabited U.S. territories, and the federal District of Columbia (D.C.). Ten other states have laws that limit the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), for the purpose of allowing access to products rich in cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating component of cannabis. The Rohrabacher–Farr amendment, first passed in 2014, prohibits federal prosecution of individuals complying with state medical cannabis laws.
The recreational use of cannabis has been legalized in 24 states, three U.S. territories, and D.C.[b] Another seven states have decriminalized its use.[c] Commercial distribution has been legalized in all jurisdictions where possession has been legalized, except for Virginia and D.C. Personal cultivation for recreational use is allowed in all of these jurisdictions except for Delaware, Illinois, New Jersey, and Washington state.
Cannabinoid drugs which have received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for prescription use are Marinol and Syndros (synthetic THC is the active ingredient in both), Cesamet (nabilone), and Epidiolex (CBD). For non-prescription use, products with less than 0.3% delta-9 THC containing CBD, delta-8 THC, and other naturally-occurring cannabinoids derived from hemp (cannabis containing less than 0.3% delta-9 THC) are legal and unregulated at the federal level, but legality and enforcement varies by state.
Statewide legalization of recreational cannabis appeared on the ballot for the 2024 elections as 2024 Florida Amendment 3, and in North and South Dakota. It failed to pass in all 3 states. Nebraskans decided on a ballot measure related to medical cannabis the same day, which passed.

Today seemed to mark a popular backlash against Republican lawmakers who have been downplaying the coronavirus pandemic. The Delta variant of the deadly virus is ripping through unvaccinated populations in the U.S. with an average of 85,000 new cases a day, numbers that rival those of February, before we had accessible vaccines. One in three cases in the nation comes from either Florida or Texas.
Lawmakers in South Carolina, Iowa, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, and Utah have prohibited schools from requiring masks, and South Carolina, Iowa, Florida, Montana, Arizona, South Dakota, Texas, and Tennessee prohibit local governments from doing so.
Yesterday, President Joe Biden called out governors, especially Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, for banning mask mandates and refusing to require the vaccine. At a press conference, Biden said “to these governors, ‘Please, help.’ But if you aren’t going to help, at least get out of the way of the people who are trying to do the right thing. Use your power to save lives.”
Today DeSantis responded: “I am standing in your way.” After sitting on Biden’s criticism for almost a day, DeSantis could find as a response only an attack on Biden for allegedly ignoring the “border crisis.” DeSantis blamed Florida’s devastating virus numbers on immigrants coming over the nation’s border with Mexico into Texas.
The recent attention to the methods of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who rose to power by stoking anti-immigrant hatred and who continues to whip up a frenzy over immigration despite the fact that refugees coming into Hungary have dropped to unremarkable levels, shows the Republican fallback on immigrant caravans to distract from their own scandals in a new light.
In fact, our southern border remains closed because of public health directives put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Unaccompanied minors are admitted so that they do not become victims of gangs or sex traffickers, and their numbers likely hit an all-time high of about 19,000 in July. Those children are processed and then transferred to facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services, which then finds suitable foster situations for them while they await immigration hearings.
Interestingly in terms of the timing of DeSantis’s outburst, today the Mexican government sued a number of U.S.-based gun manufacturers for lax controls that permit illegal weapons to flow over the border. A 2016 study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office showed that about 70% of the weapons seized in Mexico came from the United States.
Back in the U.S., the president has mandated vaccines in the federal government and has asked private employers to require vaccines. Google, Walmart, Disney World, and Microsoft, among many others, including hospitals and more than 400 private universities, are requiring masks or vaccines. So is Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker, who today issued a mask requirement for schools and a vaccine mandate for workers in state prisons and other facilities.
By Labor Day, the Food and Drug Administration is expected to give final approval to coronavirus vaccines, reassuring people reluctant to get the vaccine that it is safe.
Increasingly, people dying of Covid-19 or their survivors are publicly begging their friends and neighbors to get the vaccine. In addition to videos and facebook posts, a six-minute television segment on CBS This Morning featured Republican Representative Julia Letlow of Louisiana, who lost her husband to the disease in December. She is using her story to try to change people’s minds about refusing the vaccine.
Implied in these calls to ignore the disinformation out there about the vaccine is criticism of those Republican leaders who have pushed that disinformation.
Rising case numbers put lawmakers who have downplayed the virus in a tight spot. A new poll today from St. Pete Polls shows that DeSantis’s popularity has fallen behind that of a Democratic rival, Charlie Crist, in the 2022 governor’s race. Forty-nine percent of Floridians disapprove of DeSantis’s job performance, while only 44% approve. He is in positive numbers only with voters older than 70. In contrast to the older folks, most voters disapprove of his opposition to masks in schools.
Other Republican governors have expressed regret that they were so quick to outlaw masks. Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson today said he wished he hadn’t signed into law a measure banning state and local mask mandates. He has called the legislature into special session to change the law, claiming that he signed the previous measure because “I knew it would be overridden by the legislature if I didn't sign it.”
The new spike in infections has meant an uptick in vaccinations, with numbers matching those of early July. On Tuesday, Jeff Zients, the White House’s coronavirus response coordinator, reported that Louisiana has seen a 302% increase in the average number of newly vaccinated per day; Mississippi, 250%; Alabama, 215%; and Arkansas, 206%. On Tuesday, almost a month late, the nation met the goal President Joe Biden had set for July 4 of having at least one vaccine shot in 70% of eligible Americans. About 49% of all eligible Americans have been fully vaccinated.
Today, two parents of school-aged children in Arkansas sued the state over its law banning the use of masks in schools. They are seeking immediate “protection from an irrational act of legislative madness that threatens K-12 public school children with irreparable harm.” “Without immediate intervention by the Arkansas judiciary,” the lawsuit says, “the restrictions imposed on state and local officials by Act 1002 will result in many more Arkansas children becoming very sick, and some of them will inevitably die.”

The Redmen got on the scoreboard first with a 58-yard run by Ridl and extra point making it 7-0 late in the first quarter. After Menominee answered with a touchdown a couple minutes later, Marquette struck again early in the second quarter on a 6-yard run by Brady Wright and with the PAT kick, led 14-6.
Marquette scored again before halftime on a run by Owen Beauchamp. Teammate Truman Langlois picked off a Menominee pass in the end zone to preserve the Redmen’s 21-6 halftime lead.
Karp kept the Marquette offense rolling in the second half with a 49-yard scoring run as the Redmen padded their advantage to 28-6. The Maroons trimmed Marquette’s lead with a touchdown with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter, but the Redmen shook it off.
Ridl scored from 12 yards out to extend the lead to 34-12 heading into the fourth, and Desmond Mullen put the game away with a long punt return for a touchdown.
Marquette plays Sault Ste. Marie at 6 p.m. Friday.

Sociopath Profile: Agent South Dakota

South, in spite of her sympathetic qualities, shows many sociopathic traits. And some of those end up negating her sympathetic qualities to some degree.
[SPOILERS BELOW]
First off, on her mission with North in the beginning of Season 9, she shows herself to be rather impulsive. She repeatedly ignores her brother’s orders and continues to do her own thing even though it ends up endangering the mission. In general, she’s very hot-headed which is a stark contrast to her brother, North.
There’s also the fact that she takes pleasure in hurting her enemies. During that mission, she incapacitates enemies in rather brutal ways that leave them in agony rather than professionally dispatching them. This is an extension of her impulsiveness since she just can’t help but cause people pain when she can kinda get away with it.
She often antagonizes the other Freelancers due to them all having AIs before her, even North. It’s a bit of a childish grievance since Wash was perfectly fine waiting. And when Epsilon drives Wash insane, she blames him for having the AI program shut down for something completely out of his control. This arrogant behavior continues in the AI basics course since she thinks it’s BS that she’s there when she doesn’t even have an AI but Tex gets to skip.
It points to a sense of entitlement since she thinks that she should be higher up on the leader-board and that she should be getting an AI. Her later antagonism towards Wash and North are for two rather petty reasons. Wash for getting driven insane by Epsilon leading to the discontinuation of AI implantation and North for siding with Tex over her. Both rather selfish when it gets down to it because the former is something Wash couldn’t control and the latter is seen as North not thinking she’s as good as Tex.
While it seems that she does have a genuine connection to North, many of her actions possibly prove that it is either false or it didn’t matter to her in the long run of getting stronger and being better than everyone else. This is evidenced by the fact that she allowed him to die just so she could get Delta. And she dismisses all the AIs as just computer programs even though there is evidence that they genuinely have feelings (the Alpha being a prime example).
While she can feign mourning for her brother when Wash comes around, the fact that she’s responsible for his death in the first places makes this seem to ring hollow. (While there may have been genuine remorse, she still continued on her path not long after that.) There’s also the fact that she was willing to shoot Wash in the back just to save her own skin. She nearly did the same to Delta when the Meta had her cornered. And as Delta said, she would most likely backstab them again if given the chance. Leading him, of all individuals, to suggest killing her so that didn’t happen. Wash, being backstabbed by her before, doesn’t even hesitate and rightly so.

Road Trip: Westward Day 10: History, geography, horses, and a concentration camp
This summer, the kids and I embarked on a 10,000-mile cross-country road trip from Washington to Maine and back. Along the way, we got a brief taste of America through landmarks and sights that represent our nation, for better or worse.

Mesa Verde National Park, Mesa Verde, Colorado
Mesa Verde is most famous for the cliff dwellings built by the Ancestral Pueblo people around 1200 A.D.

There are more than 600 cliff dwellings within the park, though we only had time to see a handful of them.

If you schedule in advance, you can get a guided tour to some of the ruins. We didn't do it, but we saw people who did:


There are also plenty of mesas and canyons. Note that the structures pictured immediately above are just beyond the bend from the canyon pictured below.

In addition to the cliff dwellings, there are other, more traditional homes that are even older, some dating back to 600 A.D.
"These are much cooler than the sod house," said Luke, age 14, referring to the Prairie Homestead we saw earlier in South Dakota. "And much older."
"These took a little longer to build, I think," I responded.

Four Corners Monument, Teec Nos Pos, Arizona
At the geometric intersection of Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, on a reservation managed by the Navajo Nation, the Four Corners Monument is the only place in America you can stand in four states at once. Or sit. Or crabwalk. Or dribble a basketball. .

There was no basketball hoop at Four Corners, but Luke got his ball and dribbled it on the corner marker and in each state corner. For his creativity, he got applause from the line of people.

Wild Horses, maybe?

In New Mexico just outside Four Corners, we saw horses grazing in the distance. I have no idea if they qualify as "wild" horses, but there were no obvious ranches nearby.
Later, on our drive through Utah, we encountered a herd crossing the road and stopped for some photos.

Arches National Park, Moab, Utah
It was 102°F outside and none of us were interested in hiking through mostly barren rock and desert under a blazing hot sun. However, we decided that we'd still drive into Arches just to see what we could.
The massive rock formations — arches, balancing rocks, pillars and more — did not disappoint. They're amazing. It's hard to convey their sheer otherworldly scale in a photograph, but you can see the size of the people and plants in some of the images.




"It's like another planet," said Luke, age 14. "Like something out of a movie."
"It's places like this where Hollywood gets its ideas for other planets," I said.
We'd love to come back and hike around… during a cooler season.

Moab Isolation Center, Moab, Utah
Just up the road from Arches is the former site of the Moab / Dalton Wells Isolation Center: a concentration camp in which the U.S. government imprisoned Japanese Americans during World War II.
There is nothing left of it except two crumbling cement posts by the entrance, some cracked cement slab foundations, and a historical marker that has obviously been knocked over a few times.



The historical marker minces no words about the Japanese imprisoned here:
“All these men were U.S. citizens; some were veterans of World War I, others were family men, college graduates, and responsible U.S. citizens. Their incarceration here is a vivid example of how our Japenese-American citizens were treated during World War II. May this sad, low point in the history of our democracy never be forgotten, in the hope that it will never happen again.”
There was a larger internment camp in Delta, Utah, which is now the Topaz Museum and which presents much more information on Japanese internment. We didn’t make it over there. And there were dozens of internment camps around the U.S., imprisoning thousands of people.
We had previously talked about the Japanese camps when they were mentioned at the Holocaust Museum in DC.
“I studied these camps in 8th grade,” said Luke. “All of these people lost their homes and businesses.”
“Pretty much. There are a few stories where, for example, other farmers kept up the farms of Japanese Americans and gave them back after the war,” I said.
“That’s really nice of them,” said Nora. “Everyone else just took their stuff.”
“I should point out that kind of humanity was not the norm,” I said.
As the marker notes, the site was previously a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp during the Great Depression. As part of FDR’s “New Deal,” the CCC was a voluntary work-relief program that gave young, unmarried men a job, income, shelter, and food during that period of massive unemployment. Apparently, the cottonwood trees by the Dalton Road entrance were planted by CCC workers.

On our way to our hotel for the night, we drove through a town called Dinosaur. It has street names like Brontosaurus and Stegasaurus. I was concerned that our hotel might feature goofy dinosaur artwork, but fortunately the dino theme was limited to a few children’s toys at check-in.
