You ever think about how Baiken kind of sort of represents what Bedman wanted Ariels to be? Both him and Delilah could've gotten what they wanted without help, but they're kids and kids want nothing more than for someone to help guide them. While Baiken sincerely wanted Delilah to grow up to be a "decent adult" the Universal Will didn't care about what happened to Bedman at all. Where Baiken was willing to let her guard down and ask for help when Delilah was in danger, Bedman scared away anyone who would've been willing and able to help him in the process of carrying out Ariels's orders. And Baiken gave up her goals for Delilah while Bedman died for the Universal Will's... do you get me

Sometimes I remember that Ludinus' entire plan hinged on the love between two people who were ripped apart by fate for more than 30 years. Somehow he knew that, when it came down to it, not even Vax's transformation into a servant of the gods would prevent him from loving Keyleth of the Air Ashari. No amount of removal of his personhood, or distance from the person he used to be could snuff that out and prevent him from breaking the non-interference accords to be there when she was in danger. Their love was always going to be doomed by the narrative, and in the end it doomed the narrative too. Everyone talks about Delilah and her willingness to rip the world apart for love, but for Vax it wasn't even really will anymore, just the inevitability of all that was left of him other than the Champion.

oh... oh the truly delicious foil between melora sending rain when orym took the blade, something that causes plants to grow, and then laudna trying to get rid of the vines by using wither and bloom against the vines (and accidentally him).
melora approving orym taking the blade and putting everyone's and the world's burdens on his shoulders, and delilah encouraging laudna to take the blade to relieve the hurt she was feeling and to protect orym (and the others).
orym, who already had a blade gifted to him but also took the one who killed his family. laudna, who already had magic but uses the magic given to her by the one who killed her family (and her).
both of them seeing their worth in what they can do for others, how much they can sacrifice for the people they love, and willing to take whatever dark measures necessary to do it, and melora and delilah enabling them.
both of them being taken advantage of for being vulnerable and hurting and taking the opportunity to give them a "purpose" or a way to achieve their personal goals, but only giving them what they need to achieve that purpose when they are desperate as a way to keep their... continued support (used very loosely).
and oh... the absolutely delectable parallel between the rain stopping when dorian told orym that he didn't need to save everyone and delilah's voice and visage disappearing when imogen held laudna and told her that she loved her.
everything about them... the plant parallels, the life/death foils, their sun and moon motifs, the shared experience of death and abuse, the shared belief that their self-worth was tied to their worth to others, both feeling saved and grounded by the one they love.
orym and laudna are profoundly alike, yet fundamentally doomed by the narrative to end up where they are right now. the potential of them being the closest of friends with an unbreakable bond and the inevitability of their differences breaking them and causing a rift between the people they care about is what truly hurts the most.

Propaganda
Celia Johnson (Brief Encounter)—She had the most soulful eyes! Like an anime character, it's insane. And she was fantastic in Brief Encounter. I also like that she's relatively ordinary looking, compared to some of the really glamorous Hollywood celebrities? She had an understated beauty, you know? And she's British so horray for national pride, lol.
Hedy Lamarr (Samson and Delilah, Ziegfeld Girl)—Look. I'm sure someone has already submitted Hedy Lamarr because she was spectacularly beautiful, and a very strong lady too: she fled both an abusive marriage AND nazi persecution at a very young age and rebuilt a life for herself pursuing her love for acting all on her own!! Her career as an actress was stellar; while she began acting outside of Hollywood (her very first movie, Ecstasy, won a prize at the Venice Film Festival), she conquered American hearts very quickly with her first movie in the US, Algiers, and then just kept getting better and better. If all this isn't enough, she was also an inventor: her invention of the frequency-hopping spread spectrum radio transmission technique forms the base of bluetooth and has a lot of applications in all kinds of communication technologies. I think that deserves a prize, don't you?
This is round 2 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Celia Johnson:
Tumblr media
An argument actually broke out in a film course I was taking, mostly filled with pensioners, because someone called Celia Johnson "not that beautiful" while we were talking about Brief Encounter. I don't understand how anyone can watch that movie and say that, she's got such magnetism and I think she's so gorgeous!!!
This woman set the bar for romantic doomed love and NO ONE has ever bettered it.
Hedy Lamarr:
Tumblr media
The only person you can find both on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in the Inventor's Hall of Fame--her radio-frequency-hopping technology forms the basis for cordless phones, wi-fi, and a dozen other aspects of modern life. She was also passionate in her efforts to aid the Allies in WWII (unsurprising for a Jewish-Austrian Emigree to America), and her name served as the backbone for one of the best running jokes in what is possibly Mel Brooks' best movie. Look, Louis B. Mayer apparently believed he could plausibly promote her as "The world's most beautiful woman". Is an entire website full of people going to be less audacious than one Louis B. Mayer? I didn't think so!
Tumblr media
Described as "Hedy has the most incredible personal sophistication. She knows the peculiarly European art of being womanly; she knows what men want in a beautiful woman, what attracts them, and she forces herself to be these things. She has magnetism with warmth, something that neither Dietrich nor Garbo has managed to achieve" by Howard Sharpe, she managed to escape her controlling husband (and Nazi Germany) by a) Disguising as her maid and fleeing to Paris or b) Convincing the husband to let her wear all of her jewelry to a dinner, only to disappear afterwards. Also she was particularly clever and helped develop Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (I can't really explain it but anyway...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most beautiful women ever in film, spoken by many critics and fans. Beautiful shapely figure, deeper seductive voice, and often played femme fatale roles. She was also brilliant and an inventor. Mainly self-taught, she invested her spare time, including on set between takes, in designing and drafting inventions, which included an improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a flavored carbonated drink, and much more.
Tumblr media
Her depiction of Delilah and Samson and Delilah just lives rent free in my head. The woman was gorgeous.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gorgeous and brilliant pioneer of modern technology and the middle part.

at some point later in this episode:
laudna: god i experienced my worst fear, the worst thing i was worried about ended up happening (betrayal by someone i had grown close to, re-confirmation of my own capability and tendency to cause harm, a single heartbeat and re-awakening of Delilah, or at minimum, the permanent and dooming sensation that i will never escape her influence, or feeling like i am little more than her empty puppet, a shell of her will made manifest, bleeding hurt).
fcg: god me too (teleported right into SO many angry bird creature-people)

Wild, Spaghetti on the Wall Theory Time
Braius Doomseed is NOT a paladin of Asmodeus.
Based on Subclass choices, vibes, and the Sam with the out of nowhere curveball character trend that we all know and love. Sticking the rest under a read more bc this got...long.
I know it sounds crazy, but hear me out! Sam always has a curve-ball in his back pocket with the characters he plays from Scanlan to FCG, we all know this. It's possible that the back pocket deal is gonna be a last-minute betrayal bc, yk, Asmodeus but! BUT!!! Braius can cast Moonbeam, and since, according to his character wiki he's at least a ninth level paladin, he doesn't yet have the 10th bard feature that allows him to pull spells from other classes even when you're not College of Lore (he's a Tragedy Bard). This means that he's either Oath of Watchers or Ancients, and while Watcher's could make sense for the fight against Predathos regardless of what god Braius follows...that's a lot of paladin levels to have been brought out just since the gods were aware of the situation (like, a couple weeks I think?) and neither super seems like an Asmodeus associated Oath. (As opposed to, say, Crown or Conquest, or Vengeance, or Oathbreakder.) Plus, Tevan had no fucking clue who he was, and it seems like one of Asmodeus's lieutenants might be appraised of a high level follower of his Lord being tasked with going directly after Asmodeus. But Joy! You might say. Oath of the Watchers is pretty Neutral, and he could have just ! What about the sign he god from the ichor on the wall? Why would the god of Lies tell any of his followers shit? And if not Asmodeus who the fuck is Braius following??? Ok, so, first off, let's break down the Oath. I really, really, think that it's gotta be Watchers if Braius is really a follower of Asmodeus bc Ancients is not only heavily nature aligned (not something that the Lord of the Hells is at all associated with) but the language of the description of the Oath also seems heavily aligned with good (I mean just look at the tenents) and...y'all. I don't think Braius is a Watchers Paladin. First off, Sam never once asked (to my memory) about who was within 10 ft of him at the start of initiative, when Watchers would have given all of those people a bump on their initiative. Now, this could be 'new character who dis' except. Except. Sam did consistently ask Matt if people who were within 10 feet of him who were being targeted with Delilah shit were getting hit with spell damage.
Here's the Aura of Warding from the dndwikidot page on Oath of the Ancients:
"Beginning at 7th level, ancient magic lies so heavily upon you that it forms an eldritch ward. You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you have resistance to damage from spells." Oath. Of. The. Ancients. Bitch. (also we learned that the name Doomseed came with the oath. Naaaatuuuuure. Also also, doesn't say who the doom is for) So next up, the symbol message...what the fuck was up with that? Just bc it was an Asmodeus symbol doesn't mean he's the only bitch who can interact with it...and it was specifically not coming from the structure of the symbol itself, just the run-off. This is not a super strong point, but Asmodeus is not the only god of trickery...but more on that later. Tevan Klask doesn't know who the fuck Braius is! Look, the Lord of the Hells is a lying-ass bitch. We all know this. It's entirely possible that he keeps his people out of the loop on each other. But he's gotta know that Tevan has a line to the people going in after Ludinus the most and it feels a tad weird that Hot Devil Man would have no knowledge of a high level paladin of his Lord doing the same damn thing.
Also, Braius didn't react, like, at all to Tevan getting banished by Ludinus which feels...a little weird. So. So. If not Asmodeus, then who? What other Trickery, Nature, romance (the flirting is constant which isn't necessarily a firm indicator but c'mon) alligned deity is out there with not only what is possibly the strongest connection to whatever the fuck is going on with Predathos, but also has direct experience with followers of one 'deity' masquerading as another which could have been extremely effective without actual divine intervention? That's right, it's the motherfucking Moonweaver!! Just going by her title, it's entirely possible that this bitch was ultimately responsible for trapping Predathos in the first place, and we've heard suspiciously little of her in C3. Her cleric domains include both Trickery and Nature, and she's heavily associated with deception, misdirection, lover's trysts, and moonlight.
Yk, like with a Moonbeam. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
(My second, last minute theory is that Sam's still playing a follower of Avandra who also has Moon, Trickery, and Nature under her domains. This would be extremely funny to me. Wait fuck I'm still saying Moonweaver for my first choice but the wiki is telling me that The Changebringer is the Archenemy of the Lord of the Hells...fuck. Fuck Sam did you do this Sam let me in your brainnnnn.)

rotating the parallels between late campaign vaxleth & imodna around in my head.
the character doomed by the narrative to leave the person they love and the character doomed by the narrative to be left behind
but seriously, vax & laudna's view of themselves particularly towards late game is extremely similar. from the very beginning, vax was ready to throw himself on any sword he could find to save his friends, & laudna is the same way. they've both bound themselves to another being in exchange for power, and in doing so lost a piece of themselves. over the course of the game, vax stops being wholly vax and becomes the Champion of the Raven Queen, laudna is slowly subsumed by delilah. they both died and were brought back, they've both lost sight of their own future, and by the end of the game they're both on a mission that ends with their death.
& imogen & keyleth both have a history of being left behind. they both fall in love with someone who wants to die for them, but can't even imagine living for them. they both just want a normal, peaceful life with the person they love, but are saddled with an overwhelming responsibility. they both have to watch the person they love fade away, consumed by something Else.
and here's the real kicker. delilah briarwood is the one that killed them both.

imo the Grand Demon of Loathing is going to hit them all with reasons they hate (or could hate) themselves already:
Dorian's is all the reasons he was in the closet, all the reasons he was overshadowed by Cyrus, all the people he failed to be good enough to help (all the reasons someone he might love would not want him)
Imogen is her father's disgust, Liliana's choosing power over love for her daughter, Imogen's hypocrisy of also wanting power for personal gratification and lying to her friends (and herself) about it, her deep deep desire to be normal and the knowledge that she was a freak instead, her inability to save Laudna and her own doom to be alone (and deserve it)
Ashton's their many many failures, the times when they should they could rise above others and proved how pathetically they fall instead, it's FCG's death and the Nobodies' departure and parents who didn't care about them enough to reject power -- and their inevitable same fate, and all the reasons they deserved to be left behind
Orym's is being just a small little guy, just a toy soldier in front of a monumental horror, his inability to save people, and his inability to stick to his own better principles when those he loved most would have wanted him to (the ways he is letting down their memory and dragging down his friends now), and possibly his Fey doom to be alone and shackled forever, because he's just not as powerful, not as strong, not as good as they were or as he tells himself he is
Fearne's is her dark side again, her flightiness and selfishness, all the times she was a ditzy fool in the face of the grave seriousness of the world, all the times she made terrible choices and others paid for it (all the people who were glad they left her)
And perhaps most of all
Laudna's is already out there—all the negging Delilah has done to isolate and control her; it's the way she is powerless and her friends are special, it's that she always drags everyone down and they deserve to be free of her, it's that she is not fun-scary but just a rotten mistake and it would be better if she let herself go and stopped pretending to be worth saving
= Dominox has to be about preying and drawing on the ways that people shrink when they believe they DESERVE the worst of what they get. It's about pure Loathing and "insecurity"—it's the howl of the Abyss.
Fun!
[p.s. I do think Chet's beats coulda been more powerful if Matt had had another week to think of them. Like yes I guess Chet is haunted by accidentally killing people but he has been pretty resilient about that prospect. What he hasn't been so casual about is hurting his friends. It's why he chewed Ashton out so bad after the first Shard incident. It's why he peacocks so hard to all the higher-ups they meet. He doesn't want to be discounted and he really doesn't want to lose another family. I think if he gets Dommed again, it would also have to be about that.)
