Amyl and The Sniffers and Lambrini Girls at White Eagle Hall

On Saturday, July 20, 2024, Amyl and The Sniffers kicked off their headlining US tour with a sold out show at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, NJ. This was the first time the Australian quartet performed in Jersey City and were joined by UK punks, Lambrini Girls.

Named after an alcoholic drink (Americans, remember Zima? Well, it’s like that), the band led by vocalist/guitarist Phoebe Lunny and bassist Lily Macieira promptly began their fiery set at 8PM. About midway during their performance, I began to regret missing their headline set the previous night at the smaller space The Sultan Room in Brooklyn. Both Lunny and Macieria addressed things such as the genocide occurring in Palestine (and leading a Free Palestine chant), sexism, while the duo occasionally performing in the audience and Phoebe sporting a hat that read “Fuck Terfs” which was the band was selling at their merch table. Their set felt all too short and after they were done, my husband accurately remarked, “are they aware they’re not the headliners?”

Up next were the actual headliners, Melbourne’s Amyl and the Sniffers, who are touring in support of their newest release, two new songs, “U Should Not Be Doing That” (played during their encore), and “Facts”(which was performed prior to the encore). Their setlist reflected their catalog and many songs felt like giant singalongs between Amy and the crowd. The only downside of the show was an incident that happened near us between a concertgoer and security which diverted our attention from the band, making us miss a favorite song “Snakes,” where the concertgoer was finally ejected from the show by security (but not before he attacked a security guard first).

This was my first time seeing Amyl since their 2022 Brooklyn Steel show and my first time returning to White Eagle Hall since Mitski’s 2017 show and I left the venue feeling grateful that I hitched a ride to NJ last night and bought a ticket to attend this show when they went on sale back at the end of March. Amyl and the Sniffers, Westgate and Pleasure Forever from the 12″ vinyl reissue of the band’s first 2 self-released cassette EPs (2018).

Westgate was originally released on the Big Attraction cassette EP (2017).

Pleasure Forever was originally released on the Giddy Up cassette EP (2016).

“Ghost Ship – The Tragic Story of the ‘Mary Celeste’” *Please note that the far-more detailed version of this is on our FB Page; link in bio. There is just too much to fit here.* 150 Years Ago, Today – (Thurs) Dec 5th (sea time; Nov 4, land time), 427 miles east of the Azore Islands, almost the approximate midway point between the Azores and Portugal: The Canadian brig “Dei Gratia” sailed on Nov 15, from New York, bound for Italy. She sees a ship 6 miles out, moving as if no one was at her helm, heading in their general direction. As the they draw near, the crew of Dei Gratia see she is not in the best shape. (Photo 1) Her sails aren’t set properly, ropes drape from the booms into the sea, and most disturbing of all, hailing calls to her go unanswered. Two men take a boat, heading for the unknown ship. Coming to her stern, they read “MARY CELESTE.” (Pic 2) They climb aboard, finding her ruffled but seaworthy. The ship’s log shows a final date of Nov 25, 9 days prior, position 400 miles SW of the current location. The ship’s cargo of alcohol is undisturbed, 2 hatches are open, and a sounding rod for checking the depth of water onboard lays on deck. There are plenty of provisions on board. Nothing appears to be missing – except the lifeboat, all the Captain’s personal navigation instruments… and the entire crew. There is not a soul onboard the Mary Celeste. And the crew of Dei Gratia WATCHED HER SAIL ON NOVEMBER 7TH! They had been anchored next to each other before the Mary Celeste raised sail, rounded Sandy Hook, and disappeared over the horizon. Vanished are 37-year-old Captain Benjamin Briggs (Pic 3), wife Sarah and daughter Sophia, age 2 (Pic 4), and 7 crew: Albert Richardson, Andrew Gilling, Edward Head, Volkert & Boz Lorenzen (brothers), Gottlieb Goudschaal, and Arian Martens. Nothing was ever found of the lifeboat or the 10 lives. But why? Know one knows, and no one ever will. The “Mary Celeste” remains steeped in maritime and legend, and the story is no less bone-chilling now as it was the moment the Dei Gratia found the ghost ship 150 years ago. WOII - Week 1: Phenomenology

In our recent lecture, we delved into the philosophical concept of 'Phenomenology,' it is a philosophical approach that focuses on the study of conscious experience from the first-person perspective. Phenomenology seeks to understand the essence and structures of lived experiences, exploring how individuals perceive and make sense of the world around them (Mambrol, 2020).

Armed with this fresh insight, we embarked on a photographic exploration throughout the school, each tasked with capturing various thematic elements. I was drawn to the theme of "time".

Subsequently, we took turns presenting our individual interpretations of the concepts "time" and "shadow," and I was deeply moved by James' portrayal of "shadow."

Phenomenology emphasises the significance of emotional resonance in design, a principle that Shigeo Fukuda masterfully embodies in his work. His posters not only captivate viewers with their visual illusions but also provoke thought and stir emotions, fostering a profound connection between the audience and the message conveyed.

Furthermore, having an understanding of phenomenology is also beneficial for my work in craft and studio endeavours as it prompts me to consider not only my own perceptions but also those of the audience. For example, while crafting trading cards for studio projects, I am challenged to tap into the creative vision of my selected designer and illustrator, striving to replicate the same effects.

In conclusion, the principles of phenomenology encourage me to explore further into the subjective experiences of those interacting with my designs, fostering a more thoughtful and intentional approach to visual communication. By embracing this perspective, I can create designs that resonate with and engage my audience effectively.
