I love that we have a generation of young bands who, right from the offset are so vocal about their political causes, through speaking up, fundraisers, working with charity organisations and all. And now these bands are getting big. Fontaines D.C. can’t ’lose fans’ because of their constant and vocal support for Palestine, you’d get laughed out of the venue. Who was surprised when Carlos called everyone else out at the Rolling Stone UK Awards and expressed his strong support for Palestinian independence? They’d have said you’re out of the loop.

Lambrini Girls made it a point early doors: Phoebe has talked about how they were playing a venue in Germany and said if you’re a zionist, leave, and it was half the crowd back then. They’re now one of the most anticipated releases of 2025. They’ve stuck to this principle throughout their rise: their songs are anti-misogynistic, anti-transphobia, anti discrimination. By the time Phoebe scaled the top of a Glastonbury tent to plant a Palestinian flag, there were only cheers.

Bands like Kneecap. They opened their show at Glastonbury, a televised slot shown on national television on the BBC, with a message about imperialism by Britain in Ireland and Palestine. They have gone around with their projectors and projected this fact on public buildings. They’ve talked on stage about how more people were killed in Gaza in 6 months than the entirety of the Troubles. And now, their film is going to the Oscars. They swept the British Independent Film Awards, they’ve been nominated for a BAFTA too. And at that late stage if you complain that Kneecap are being political? Hahaha mate, you’re having a laugh.

Fans of all these bands tend to also follow their beliefs. It’s what draws you into their music, right? When you hear the lyrics to Lambrini Girls’ TERFs Out, or God’s Country, or Bob Vylan’s He’s A Man or We Live Here. Kneecap’s CEARTA, Enola Gay’s PTS.DUP or Through Men’s Eyes. Amyl and the Sniffers’ Knifey or Comfort To Me. Unless you’re actively stuffing a finger in your ears going ‘la la la I can’t hear you’, you must know.

And so I love that I see Fontaines fan accounts, ones with pretty large followings and engagement with a description that basically says ‘Fontaines D.C. fan account. Free Palestine.’ (And it’s not just performative, they too have used their platform to organise fundraisers and work with charity organisations to make sure their action is as direct as can be.) Fandoms can sometimes be places where it’s almost taboo to break the veneer of pretending your time spent loving a band somehow doesn’t exist in the real world, and I see this a lot with older fandoms/older bands’ fandoms. ‘Just stick to the music’, ‘we’re all just here to love this band, let’s leave the politics out of it’ okay grandma. Your band themselves have spoken out but just because they do it less frequently doesn’t warrant the ‘no politics’ rule of your fanclub.

So I’m glad to see how actively involved our new bands are, they were vocal before they had a platform and a big chunk of their listeners are now either people that came up with them, supporting this, or those who even learned something along the way. And as we’ve seen from Taylor Swift fans, mobilised fandoms can do a LOT, that’s really where the power of music to make difference lies, so I’m glad to see how fandom in music by these young bands is not resistant to it!

Amyl and The Sniffers and Lambrini Girls at White Eagle Hall

On Saturday, July 20, 2024, Amyl and The Sniffers kicked off their headlining US tour with a sold out show at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, NJ. This was the first time the Australian quartet performed in Jersey City and were joined by UK punks, Lambrini Girls.

Named after an alcoholic drink (Americans, remember Zima? Well, it’s like that), the band led by vocalist/guitarist Phoebe Lunny and bassist Lily Macieira promptly began their fiery set at 8PM. About midway during their performance, I began to regret missing their headline set the previous night at the smaller space The Sultan Room in Brooklyn. Both Lunny and Macieria addressed things such as the genocide occurring in Palestine (and leading a Free Palestine chant), sexism, while the duo occasionally performing in the audience and Phoebe sporting a hat that read “Fuck Terfs” which was the band was selling at their merch table. Their set felt all too short and after they were done, my husband accurately remarked, “are they aware they’re not the headliners?”

Up next were the actual headliners, Melbourne’s Amyl and the Sniffers, who are touring in support of their newest release, two new songs, “U Should Not Be Doing That” (played during their encore), and “Facts”(which was performed prior to the encore). Their setlist reflected their catalog and many songs felt like giant singalongs between Amy and the crowd. The only downside of the show was an incident that happened near us between a concertgoer and security which diverted our attention from the band, making us miss a favorite song “Snakes,” where the concertgoer was finally ejected from the show by security (but not before he attacked a security guard first).

This was my first time seeing Amyl since their 2022 Brooklyn Steel show and my first time returning to White Eagle Hall since Mitski’s 2017 show and I left the venue feeling grateful that I hitched a ride to NJ last night and bought a ticket to attend this show when they went on sale back at the end of March. Had this sat on my desk since it came out, wanted to wait until I wasn't tired as shit to listen to it & give it proper attention but I'm always tired as shit so tonight's good enough, first impressions time.

I was lucky enough to hear the opening number (along with a couple of others) early when I saw them back in that pub in Hoxton so no surprise on it being damn quality, viciously angry and uncompromising as ever, though I will say I'd prefer the vocals to be a touch higher in the mix because Phoebe is such a lyrically dense and intense songwriter and it deserves to be heard clearly; this is by no means a recurring problem or a complaint on the album as a whole, there's just so many fucking words in Bad Apple.

Now, at risk of sounding like a pretentious hipster, it's an almost totally forgotten fact that Big Dick Energy was in fact their very first little release way back in like 2021 or even 2020 I don't recall, they've scrubbed that initial Youtube release off the internet entirely, and it's always been a staple live opener. To be honest it's probably been my least favourite of their songs so far but I'm pretty sure this version is a re-recording and it's grown on me, like it is the same song but just done better here.

No Homo stands out as different in that it's not a burning fiery tirade, like yes or course it's still blunt social commentary but it's unusually fun for them, not picking a fight, and I swear that vocal line on "I like your face and it's in a gay way" sounds familiar but I cannot place it.

The other new songs are fantastic as ever, viciously angry and incisive and hitting hard on topics that don't usually get much of a mention (noise-punk song about being autistic, was not expecting that, as if they could suit me any fucking more), and oh I have to mention how I love the clear Sonic Youth influence like it's always been there but the tone in some of those guitar breaks and especially that deadpan end of Love is so Kim Gordon, I adore Sonic Youth and they incorporate those sounds so well.

Final track is so clearly them just having fun being as blunt & loud as they can get away with but it is also at the same time very good, and the electronic element of the music is an interesting touch they wear well, wonder if they'll experiment more with that in future.

Shoutout to the little Kwame Ture interlude in the middle too, just to remind us their politics are serious and not just sloganeering like so much punk.

So, in conclusion, yeah it fucks hard, one of the best punk albums in years, exactly as I expected.
