If you’re using a debit card and you don’t have very much money in your account, you really should pay inside instead of paying at the pump.
When you pay at the pump, it puts a “hold” on your account for up to $175 or even more… which may stay there for 7-10 business days. So you are running low on money so you put just $25 into your gas tank… but your bank account is actually down $175 until the hold expires and you can access that $150. Meantime, you could bounce a bill or otherwise get in trouble because you thought that $150 was available to use and it wasn’t.
Even if you aren’t particularly tight on money, if you’re driving a lot and have to fill up repeatedly in a short period of time, you can get screwed by this.
So walk a little further, interact with the cashier, and say “Twenty bucks on pump five” or whatever and then only $20 comes out of your account and you don’t get fucked by gas pump holds.

... Ok, I just saw an Instagram reel of someone looking confused at a credit card bill and why they "needed to pay twice", while their mom was recording, laughing while shaking her head in disbelief, and still not properly explaining what a credit card, or the bill is. So if you're someone young who's been sheltered from the world of money, here's some info on how it works:
There are 2 types of payment cards, debit and credit.
What is a Debit Card?
With debit cards, they pull money from your account directly, and you don't get a bill to pay later, it's paid on the fly. In Sweden (and most of Europe I believe), the norm is for overdraft to not be possible in most circumstances, but in the US, I think overdraft is easy to happen, with heavy fees as a result.
What is Overdraft?
Overdraft is when you don't have enough money in your account, but still buy something so your account balance goes negative. This can happen either because the banks are greedy, just let's you do it, so they can charge you out of the ass for accidentally doing it (the US model), or because the terminal had temporary connectivity issues and had to do an offline payment batching the transaction for later (the times I've had it happen in Sweden). If you're in the US and you have a card that says "debit" on it, I'd suggest looking up how to disable overdraft on it at your bank.
If your bank account is negative, you should fix that asap, as the overdraft fees will accumulate and snowball!
What is a Credit Card?
Credit cards are cards where you basically take out a small loan every time you buy an item, and then pay the credit card company at the end of the month. Some cards claim "unlimited", which is not "how much money is in your account", but "how much money you're allowed to borrow". You still have to pay that money when the bill comes.
Which is better?
I would mostly advise people to use debit cards, in places with a somewhat sane standard of consumer protection laws (I don't even have a credit card, I only have debit cards). It's easy to understand what money you have, how much you have left, and plan around that.
But then... The US makes things messy
In the US, you have some caveats which throw off what should be something quite simple: Credit scores and weird consumer protection laws.
Credit cards have in some cases taken over the role of consumer protection in the states, meaning you have a lot more protection against scams and similar with a credit card than a debit card. You can dispute a payment on your credit card and get out of actually paying for the thing you never got, for instance, but disputing a payment on your debit card and getting money back isn't as easy.
Credit cards are also how you accumulate credit score, which is what dictates your ability to take out (big) loans, like when you buy a house with a mortgage or car etc. And I do believe also when entering certain contracts like lease for an apartment. Meaning having a credit score is quite important, and using a credit card is basically a necessity

Hello Bitches,
I’m wondering if you have any posts you can link me to on choosing a new bank? I’m past due to change after moving a few states away from the local bank my family uses, but I’m nervous about selecting a new one. I’m in North Carolina, and considering two state banks. One is recommended to me by some close friends, but another has a great introductory offer. What should I look for and what should scare me away?
Absolutely, my lamb! We've got plenty of answers about your options and how to choose at our how-to guide, below.

And good luck! This process is easier than you think.
