Been busy between job-hunting and commissions, but I thankfully found the time to finish this traditional hairpiece to commemorate my university graduation tomorrow!!
Uni was a stressful and unpredictable time, especially with how my career path and art industry have shifted so drastically during my time there, but I’m glad I made it out the other side ✨
This hair ornament was made with moose hide, porcupine quills, dentallium shells, glass and metal beads, and stringing thread!! You can see an old diagram of this type of ornament here:

Catherine Blackburn | Scooped (detail). 2017
Catherine Blackburn was born in Patuanak Saskatchewan, of Dene and European ancestry and is a member of the English River First Nation. She is a multidisciplinary artist and jeweller, whose common themes address Canada's colonial past that are often prompted by personal narratives. Her work merges mixed media and fashion to create dialogue between historical art forms and new interpretations of them. Through utilizing beadwork and other historical adornment techniques, she creates space to explore Indigenous sovereignty, decolonization and representation.

Support Indigenous artists/creators right now if you can! These are all available right now at thatdeathgirl.com/crafty-kwes among lots of other stuff, go look around :)) If financial support is out of reach for you right now, like, comment, and share as much as you can! It will help our stuff get to more people, which is half the battle for small creators. Chi-miigwech <3

Hello all! I need help
hi folks, I am a native two-spirit butch who is in need of financial assistance!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(pictures of my very small dog I am trying to be a good single dad to)
so, I got a car last year using my savings after losing my health insurance (26th birthday). I did this in an effort to be able to work without having to bus for an hour and a half in either direction often at 6 am or 11 pm (like the job I had a couple years ago in an inpatient crisis mental health center).
anyway, I am now a caregiver for disabled elders. The work I do helps them stay in their homes and live their last years out in dignity and safety. I drive my car a lot for work but since starting this job I'm not making enough to cover repairs.
my power steering rack (the control system essentially) is busted and my car (which I need to use to like, get my clients to the store or sometimes the ER) is out of commission til I can get it fixed.
The amount a kind and reputable-seeming mechanic (idk just met the guy) quoted me is
$1432
Now, if every follower I have right now sent me a dollar, I would be able to cover this. If, and I'm just guessing here, half of those are no longer active because they left during the purge, then the other half could help me to cover half of it.
my v3nm0 is @val907 <3
If you like shiny things, you're in luck! I have an instagram for jewelry you can buy, prices on things range about $15 - 40, you can find that here or email me at [email protected] to custom order beaded bracelets, necklaces, and earrings <3

anyway, if you are reading this thank you!! do/nations and reblogs always help <333

Maria-Margaretta | she makes all things good. 2023
Billboard Exchange co-presented in Saskatoon, SK by AKA Artist-Run, Hamilton Artists Inc., and PAVED ArtsBillboard at 424, 20th St W, Saskatoon, SK
"How do we care for objects and the stories they hold? Artist Maria-Margaretta explores generational relations by considering the ways in which objects are created, kept, and passed down. Her photographic billboard, she makes all things good, reflects on her homelands and ancestral lineage through the transformative power of objects.
The image consists of three objects: an axe centerpiece held by a hand wearing beaded white gloves, placed against a canvas tent. Margaretta collaborated with Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley to create a sheath for the axe, adorning the object with delicate beadwork as a gift for their young daughter. The axe is a well-used family tool recovered on Pawis-Steckley’s nan’s beach on Wasauksing First Nation. Design elements on the sheath reference and honour their Métis and Anishinaabe heritage and shared journey as parents. Meanwhile, the elbow-length white gloves, beaded by Margaretta for her great great grandmother, embody the Michif matriarchs whose labour in raising families upholds Métis nationhood. The worn, olive-coloured tent belonging to Margaretta’s grandfather sets a warm and earthy tone to the image, reminiscent of her ancestral homelands in St. Louis, Saskatchewan. Together, the axe, glove, and tent carry the past into the present, envisioning new worlds for holding and dreaming with their daughter. "

I went to a workshop today put on by an indigenous shop and they were teaching how to bead earrings with brick layering. I went with my Metis grandmother and I had a blast. When I started, I was just going willy nilly with the colours (yes, which are the trans pride flag) without a pattern. It kind looks like crap now, so I'm going to rebead it. I made a few designs and I'm going to make other people decide for me. I've asked IRL people and most of them are leaning towards 2 or 3.
