My friend, Angel, commissioned me to pyrogragh this pair of leather gloves that he will be using as a wildfire fighter in Colorado. What sold me on the project was him saying “I just want trees and mountains to be included. Other than that, you’d have total creative freedom, I know you create better that way” :’)
By illustrating skeletal human hands made from sticks and wood with growing leaves in the palms of the gloves, I wanted to create a reminder for Angel that he is very much a part of the nature he is fighting to protect.

It feels like magic to slow down
Cause it is magic to slow down
To feel it move all around me
Feel it all pass all right through me
To know the land that I am from
We meet each other where we are
To be cradled by her power
To sit here with her for hours
What a mother, what a wonder
What a home and what a lover
What a wonder to be welcomed
Full belonging to the beauty of it all

I came to realize that no thing on earth can properly be considered a single entity, but I am and you are composed of multiple life-forms, from different kingdoms of life, all working in concert to be me or you. And every bird (and the tree it lives in) is an ecosystem that participates in an ecosystem that eventually scales up to the planet. This notion has totally upended my idea of what an individual is, be it plant or animal or fungus, or person or place. In light of the new science, the singular noun “I” is obsolete because in reality “I” is a community.

I’m learning to not relate sadness as a negative emotion when it usually is just my heart telling me to pay attention and when I do something beautiful comes from it

My luck is definitely being pressed this Friday, the 13th. First, a tire blowout on my way to work; now my Tumblr blog that I created as an oblivious and curious 12 year old (a decade and a half ago) was suddenly terminated, during a period of inactivity too. I am mourning all that is lost on Southern Constellations, but in the same breath, I look forward to making a new home here that is more intentional. If I am being real, this morning could’ve been worse; I could’ve lost control of my vehicle around the bend and swerved into the river, but instead I got to watch the sunrise while I took off my flat. Then, realizing I didn’t have a spare, I put it back on for the tow truck to come scoop me up, and I met such a beautiful beetle passing me by. I got a free morning from work and learned my cat loves to be swaddled like the sweet little baby boy he is. I also have my first art market in 2 years tomorrow! There's too much to look forward too to wallow in this melancholy state. Everything is painful and everything is beautiful, and I want to be here for it all.
