Stripes are always the answer, whether you want to stand out or blend in! It’s International Zebra Day, and we’re celebrating one of planet Earth’s most iconic species: the zebra. Found in parts of Eastern and Southern Africa, these equids can run as fast as 40 mph (64.4 kph). A zebra’s stripes are also as distinct as human fingerprints—no two animals have the same pattern! But what purpose do they serve? The short answer is that we aren’t sure. Scientists have hypothesized that zebras’ bold patterns may confuse predators, creating an optical illusion that blurs each individual’s outline in a herd. Other research suggests that zebra stripes might repel disease-carrying flies or aid in thermoregulation.

Hey everyone! this is where the zebra is currently with the design.

It has knee braces!! I will most probably be drawing the zebra usually with them on, but it’s no requirement, for example if anyone else wants to draw the zebra :-]. I always like to make sure an animal design has official colors underneath any clothing and accessory anyway. I think this will be final! thank you everyone for your feedback!

As a reminder, aside from why the zebra was requested for this flag, this is also just a zebra with the disability pride flag on it. It’s just a deisgn to fit the flag, with input from other disabled people in our community. It doesn’t mean other animals can’t have designs with these colors, too! I don’t mean this design to be the only mascot for all disabled people. It’s just a silly series i do of pride animals, and at the time, during disability pride month, I wanted to see what everyone wanted me to start off with for this flag!

the goal with my pride animals is to take requests and make people feel happy and seen.. that’s all <:-)

It's January 31st, 🦓 International Zebra Day. Zebras live in 🌍 Africa in many different habitats, including savannas, mountains, woodlands, and hills. As you undoubtedly suspected, Zebras are members of the 🐴 Horse family, the genus Equus. There are three species of Zebra - Plain’s Zebra, Mountain Zebra, and Grevy’s Zebra. Each has a distinct pattern of alternating black and white stripes.

Why do Zebras have stripes? Believe it or not, scientists still aren't sure. Many theories exist, though. Stripes might provide camouflage in tall grass, especially at night. The stripes on a herd of Zebras might also confuse 🦁 predators because it can be difficult to tell where one Zebra ends and another begins. Or Zebras may use their stripes to identify each other as, like with human fingerprints, each Zebra's stripe pattern is unique. In addition, it's been proven that the alternating black and white pattern of Zebra stripes helps control 🌡️ body temperature, plus deters 🦟 biting flies from landing. It could very well be that all of these factors play a part in the natural selection of stripes for Zebras.

Are Zebras black with white stripes, or white with black stripes? In its mother's womb, each Zebra starts out black, and the white coloration develops there, while still in the womb.

There've been many attempts to tame Zebras, but their unpredictable nature makes this difficult. However, in 1907, Kenyan Doctor Rosendo Ribeiro regularly rode his tame Zebra to his patients' homes.

The populations of all three Zebra species are declining. The most threatened is Grevy's Zebra, whose population has decreased 54% over the past 30 years. The main culprits in this case do not include the usual suspect, climate change, but are habitat loss, poaching (for their pelts), and hunting (for bushmeat). The 🗽 Smithsonian Institution's 🐼 National Zoo and 🟩 Conservation Biology Institute founded International Zebra Day to help raise awareness of the Zebras' plight and help encourage efforts to preserve and protect them and their habitats. ☮️Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Animal of the Day!

Quagga (Equus quagga quagga)

Extinction Date- 1883

Habitat- Southern Africa

Size (Weight/Length)- 300 kg; 2.5 m

Diet- Grasses; Leaves

Cool Facts- The quagga was a subspecies of plains zebra that lacked stripes on its back half. Unfortunately, we don’t know a whole lot about quagga behavior. It is believed they gathered in herds of up to 50 individuals and spent their lives constantly on the move as they searched for fresh grass. It is unknown why quagga lacked stripes on their booty, although it could have been for dissuading biting flies from landing on them. Quagga have been found in cave art going back to the Pleistocene and were important to the San people of Southern Africa. Overhunting of quagga by colonists resulted in their population plummeting. The last quagga died in Amsterdam’s Natura Artis Magistra zoo, resulting in the only photographs of a quagga. Plains zebras today are threatened from competition for grass with livestock and habitat loss. Conservationists are making plans for sustainable livestock practices and wildlife corridors for plains zebras with the hope of their population making a full recovery.

little update!

hello!! I hope everyone has been well c: in my time away from this tumblr account, I've graduated from college, gone on vacation, and found a job! but I've also gotten back into writing a bit, and I've really missed interacting with my friends' fics and creations on here.

sooooo... I'll be coming back to tumblr! I'm taking some time to rebrand and set up a little return/birthday event, but if everything goes according to plan, I'll be back officially on the 17th of August!

Day 6: Zebra Shark of @voxteks-sharkweek !!

my Vox's tail is loosely based off of pajama sharks, who have these long horizontal stripes that run down their bodies. I think it took him a hot minute to actually learn what type of shark stuff he had going on, and that included Extensive Shark Investigations™, so he heard the words "zebra shark" and went "surely those must have the same stripes as me" but alas.
