Ive seen wayyyy too many want the John Williams Superman theme to be a part of the new movie with Corenswet and as much as I love love love that theme, that is Christopher Reeve’s Supes theme and it would be lazy and uninspired to use it again like this.
Like as much as I didn’t like the Cavill Superman, the theme he had by Hans Zimmer was amazing and had that heart racing feeling of flying that was so thrilling and heroic.
I WANT to see what other composers would do with Superman, reusing John Williams shows an unwillingness for anything new and creative as much as I love it so much. Each theme is unique to the Superman it belongs to
The Reeve theme is both bombastic and comforting. And Cavill’s theme is more on the thrilling side but a little more angtsy. But what both themes have in common is feeling majestic, noble, but still human and warm and of course very memorable.
I would want the new theme to have those qualities at least but let Corenswet’s Superman be his unique self with his OWN theme. That’s why it didnt hit well when John Williams’ theme was reused in the Justice League movie.
It’s not even his theme really so lets not repeat history.
Totally unrelated sidenote: the TV Supermen have their own themes and Dean Cain’s Superman’s theme is super nostalgic for me and I love it so much ok now im done 😮💨

okay let's not pretend i didn't go straight to this one: 0:33 onwards of the biggest decision - instant tears, brings me to my knees, yanking at my hair, howling at the moon
ok yes i have major feelings at the motif arrangement in not kind, its literally like hearing crowley's inner monologue to me it's so soft and vulnerable and i want to give him a squidge
i don't want to talk about fallen angel it hurts but fuck it im gonna, im such a whore for string swells and 1:17 onwards just does me in, the lilting and the rides and falls is just superb fuuuuuck
4:51 of catch the bullet!!! the little snare trill!!! gOD and then the stRINGS? then that brass ok no i can't talk about it
oh crowley and muriel is so gorgeous and serene i love it sm
love how hard he's smoking goes at like 0:33, it's nails, and then slam at 0:53? CHRIST it's so 'theme that got left in the car' i love it and it's perfect powerful crowley score yesyesyesyesye
monsieur azirophale [sic?] is so silly im giggling kicking my feet twirling my hair
okay but if there is anything that sums up like the ✨magic✨ of GO for me is the 0:00 - 0:16 of the candelabra it's so preeeeeetty
okay now i won't lie. this is the one i truly, truly wanted. my favourite scene in the whole mf show is the lift arrives/Going Up sequence, and the MUSIC hit me like a freight train when i was watching it, i was practically thrown back in my seat, like if i was feeling at all sleepy at 5am on premiere day the music in this scene woke me tf Up, the music in this bit would resurrect me from my grave it is That GOOD (the circle, just listen to all of it it's perfect) (ok actually i will say that the electricity noises in the show did add to the✨ambiance✨ but that's minor)
10/10 soundtrack god bless us all
#good omens#good omens soundtrack#david arnold is a fucking genius im in awe#arnold symphony orchestra tour when???#i went to a concert of zimmer vs williams and that was insane (even if they did butcher chevaliers a little bit but anyway)#id do a lot of things to see like an arnold vs maybe silvestri? or actually no maybe djawadi yessssss djawadi

Imperobator

David Tennant and a Verne adaptation. Sure, OK, that's my thing. But then I hear Hans Zimmer. I mean I can actually hear him before even seeing his name at the opening credits. WHAT! Perfection. This summer I got to hear his music live, which meant that I saw the amazing Tina Guo as well. Damn, what a magical night that was.

partner and I watched the david tennant around the world in 80 days:
somewhat uneven opening act, was quite a bit of emotional stuff with passeportout that wasn't introduced aaaall that well and never really gets paid off either, and could have been better with a few tweaks
however each episode then got progressively better than the last
and was really into its final thesis, which was shockingly not about romantic love, even though there was a whole big setup around it, really appreciated that (I mean, sort of about romantic love, but not romantic love as the way to fix your life/the idea that you can just sort out things by being in love -- more about letting romantic love go actually)
literally a qpp type triad between fogg, passepartout, and fix??? you're waiting for the narrative to do the inevitably split in which fix and passepartout have their romance and then there's fogg's story next to it, but that... just doesn't really happen? and fogg explicitly compares his former great romantic love to the relationship he's built with the two of them???
whole episode dedicated to honouring bass reeves, former slave turned us marshal, on whom the western genre is basically based, and I'd say it's my favourite of the episodes overall
whole episode dedicated to honouring jane digby, english former aristocrat who scandalised everyone by having a ton of lovers and eventually marrying sexy younger sheikh medjuel el mezrab in damascus
really enjoyed the fact that it was an international collaboration, and you could tell. lot of fantastic actors from all over the world, lot of joy and respect given to their presence and said world
struggled a tad with being quite as open about the truth of english colonialism as I would have wanted personally, but it does speak to it, and it is a continued thread -- could have done more, glad it did some
there's an infuriating thread of how passepartout gets treated as a black working class man, but it's intentional, if not quite as acknowledged to his face as I wished (but then there's a thing that happens at the end which speaks to a delicious reversal of roles so all is forgiven -- well passepartout forgives them way earlier on, but me on his behalf)
abigail fix is a very well-written character. she gets to be good at the things she's good at, while also containing both the ability to be angry at the limitations pushed onto her, and have her own biases as a white upperclass british woman
all in all, it's got stuff that's wobbly for sure, but a lot of things that are annoying are also intentionally so (the fact, for example, that both fogg and fix don't initially take in passepartout's perspective and move through life with that blessed british "I can do what I want" colonialist attitude)
once the puzzle is complete it's so very very satisfying to have watched
loved the final scene with all my aroace qpp-having heart
david tennant spends so much of it being just the most miserable drippy former public school boy, he's drooping, he's sad, he's hurt and...
so spoiler for one scene here but:
he gets his shirt stripped off him and flogged which was also Pretty Neat.
#actually my one real gripe - except for that first episode stuff which is kind of abrupt and never reaaally given the time it needs#is that hans zimmer did the music and so it's just not thaaat interesting most of the time -- sounds like a rehash of richie sherlock holme#type stuff which is so popular with that era but make it badass#david tennant#i like the intro graphic though!

After the underwhelming results of the previous episode "Badlands," the next episode, “Swamps” was a huge improvement with me expecting the new pacing pattern which worked better, and we went to many locations set in swamps or wetlands.
We start with some young azhdarchid pterosaurs having hatched and placed in a very similar situation of flying to their feeding grounds across a lake but must avoid the crocodilian-like Shamosuchus. Some triumphantly make it, and it was cool hearing the theme music used for it at one point. The design of babies reminds me of the pterosaurs that the Velociraptors hunted in “Freshwater” and that has me wonder if this was done due to budget matters or are they the same species?
Next, we focus on Austroraptor fishing in South America. Due to the wet season having happened, the water level has rose and more fish are around, thus luring more male Austroraptor and it causes some bickering because they like some personal space. Meanwhile, a young male tries the sneaky technique to get food since he hasn’t established a territory for himself and is happy to get leftovers since the older adults are very picky and wasteful of eating just half of the fish. I would love to see these in Evolution 2 one day.
The giant toad, Beelzebufo returns as a bachelor and not a baby dino-eater, calling for females while patrolling a series of mud pools, but is interrupted by a group of Rapetosaurus who come to cool themselves off. This is probably the first time I’ve seen sauropods or any dinosaur for that matter bathed in mud to cool off like many animals in Africa do like rhinos and warthogs. It was cool seeing Pachycephalosaurus in all its head-butting glory as two males compete over dominance, and it was interesting learning about how their diet subtly changes during the dry season from fruit and leaves to more down-to-earth food like roots and bugs.
We end “Swamps” spectacularly at where I can assume, the Hell Creek Formation showing Edmontosaurus and Triceratops drinking at a watering hole, with some young playing around. Meanwhile, two Tyrannosaurus are watching and planning for a hunt, but there are too many eyes watching, so they plan to hunt at night. At night!
The hunt sequence clearly shows how scary Tyrannosaurus can be at night. They’re shown to have excellent eyesight because they have the biggest eyes of all dinosaurs which clearly kills off the theory of T-Rex’s sight from Jurassic Park. They also have cushions in their feet to silence sound, and it shows off how good they are at ambush hunting since the brothers work as a team to catch their prey. So, tell me what’s scarier, raptors hunting or T-Rex hunting at night. The sequence reminded me of Phil Tippett’s dinosaur short film “Prehistoric Beast” which focused on a hunt in a dark forest and the co-op work of a T-Rex family on a hunt from “When Dinosaurs Roamed America.” I’d love to see more reminders of Phil Tippett’s work in the future.
Ironically, this episode is an improvement over last season’s “Freshwater” since they’re both the third episode and focus on water.
I was planning to publish this around later in May, hoping a third season was coming to surprise us, but I haven't heard anything, let alone I would've heard something earlier, and it seems apparently over, even if the producers are doing a VR spin-off which doesn't exactly interest me. I was hoping there was more to show. More new dinosaurs, new behaviors, new stories, I'd just hate to wait for another 10 years or so again. Sure, it seems to have inspired some new paleo-media on the way including Netflix's "Life On Our Planet," but I don't know if they can ever capture the majesty and spectacle of this prehistoric planet. We shall see.
Check out my earlier reviews if you haven't already.
3.5/4 stars.
