Weekly Snippet

This week's snippet comes, of course, from the next chapter of The Knife. I have the first complete draft of the chapter worked out as a sort of script with dialogue and a bit of stage direction. Now comes the hard part of actually fleshing it out before it's ready for prime time.

The girl was a few years older than Sansa and her red hair was a few shades darker. Her breast that she bared for her babe to suckle was covered in freckles. The babe had a cap of black hair. It’s eyes were a familiar dark blue.  “I named her Barra,” the girl said as the child nursed. “She looks so like him, does she not, milord? She has his nose, and his hair.” “She does,” Lord Eddard allowed as he ran his hand through babe’s hair.  “Tell him that when you see him, milord, if it please you. Tell him how beautiful she is.” “I will,” Lord Eddard promised with a sigh. He seemed exhausted at the prospect. “Did you ask the same of Lord Arryn?” Theon asked. He oogles her breasts. The girl shook her head. “He and the king’s brother fell to arguing. Lord Stannis said my Barra was proof that King Robert’s seed was strong. Lord Arryn said it was no good without knowing who the father was.” Tears gathered in the corners of her eyes. “She is his though, milord. The king’s. I swear it. I’ve never had anyone but him.” “I believe you,” Lord Eddard said gently.  “Lord Arryn said he did too,” the girl sniffled. “He gave me a coin for her keeping.”  Lord Eddard dutifully pulled a coin from his purse to do the same.
