Sooo talk to me about Doreen Green. I've never read the comics or seen the X-Men movies (fake fan, ik) but I love D&W and your fics! Yours are the only fics I've seen her show up in, to the point that I wondered if she was an OC before I saw that she had an AO3 tag. Where did you learn about her? oh my god okay. listen. i learned about Squirrel Girl like 15 years ago and I fell in love with her. my dad told me about her, actually.

the version of Doreen Green in WSMBverse is, like... my interpretation of what an MCU/fox version of her would be like, since she's never showed up in a movie. WSMB!Doreen isn't directly based on any particular version, she's kind of an amalgam of things i like from multiple versions of her appearances, so i have a lot of leeway with her!

at her core, Doreen is a clever, sweet, funny, mischievous character and she likes to solve problems creatively and socially, rather than through violence! (though she is not opposed to violence when necessary. she can should must and will kick insane amounts of ass)

she is also canonically the most powerful character in the marvel universe. i am not joking. she has canonically beaten galactus, thanos, dr doom, wolverine, iron man, and MANY OTHERS. either in an outright fight, or through trickery, or through... just, like... the power of friendship.

you literally cannot beat her in a fight. it is impossible. and her main power is the fact that she can talk to squirrels.

she's technically not a mutant, but she has a "genetic anomaly" so imo she's. she's a mutant. idc what anyone says she's a mutant

she has a BIG fluffy squirrel tail, and she has no squirrel ears (but wears some on a headband. nerd)

wsmbverse doreen's healing factor is pretty good, but also pretty slow. so if she got injured badly enough that she straight up died before her healing factor could fix matters, well. that. that would not be good. good thing she's unbeatable!

oh also she HAS spent time canonically with Laura, so i mean. that ship isn't totally coming out of nowhere either heheehehooohooo

i love her SO dearly and it's been a total joy to develop a movieverse interpretation of her for this silly fic series :3 i know it's really mainly a poolverine fic series but i have SOOOOO so enjoyed developing Laura and Doreen's relationship

Humans have worked with other species to find food for [millennia], including honeyguides in southeast Africa and Indigenous American accounts of hunting alongside wolves. And net-casting fishers working with dolphins isn’t unique to Brazil — the practice has also been observed in Mauritania, Myanmar and India, but the bottlenoses of Laguna are the most famous. The local population of about five dozen cooperative dolphins has been systematically monitored since 2007, said Fábio G. Daura-Jorge, a biologist at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil and an author of the paper. In 2017, the team began surveilling both the fish and dolphins with GPS, drones and sonar.

The team found that the dolphins gave a cue — usually a sudden, deep dive — to signal that they’d driven prey within reach of fishers’ nets. Eighty-six percent of the successful catches during the study period came from fishers reading dolphins’ behaviors, Dr. Cantor said. Careful observation and timing were key: Those who cast nets too late or missed dolphin cues were less likely to catch anything.

The dolphins also time their foraging carefully. The team of researchers used hydrophones to measure the animals’ echolocation clicks, the rate of which increased as the nets hit the water. When a fisher made a successful cast, the dolphins homed in on disoriented mullet or plucked a few fish from inside the net. When fishers mistimed their cast or failed to respond to the dolphins’ cues, the dolphins didn’t strike.

“The dolphins know what they are doing,” Dr. Daura-Jorge said. “They’re taking advantage of the fishers’ actions to actively forage.”

The human participants proved to be keen observers, too. The fishers shared a wealth of experience with the researchers about how the dolphins and fish behaved, and they knew how to recognize the dolphins that made good fishing partners. The fishers identified their partners’ clicking and told the researchers that they felt the buzz of the echolocation in their legs when the dolphins “cry out.”

The strategy has clear benefits for the dolphins, Dr. Cantor said: Those that hunted with humans were 13 percent more likely to survive to adulthood. Cooperative dolphins tended to linger near the fishing grounds that they shared with humans, while other dolphins that traveled more widely throughout the area’s water were three times more likely to end up tangled in illegal fish nets.
