Here's 100 of the albums from 2024 that i''ve enjoyed the most: 50 hip hop records, and 50 albums in other genres. There's still a ton of stuff I haven't gotten to yet or need to revisit, but i'm feeling pretty good about this and don't think too much would change aside from the order. Insane year for music overall, and surely there will still be some big releases in the next two months. Biggest surprise for me was definitely The Cure making a comeback after almost two decades and putting out their best album since Wish. I'm also convinced that Robert Smith is an actual vampire. he still sounds great after all this time. Charts with album titles included Again, i'm sure there's plenty of stuff that has gone under the radar for me so as always i'm open to recommendations. Let me know what your favorite records are, i'd genuinely like to know. I'll post the list of albums below, and maybe at the end of the year will do some kind of spotify playlist with one or two songs from each. Peace.

You know what I am in need for. A HOOK fic about his reaction to the reader being in the woman’s royal rumble and winning or getting eliminated
I GOT YOUUUU
Hook's Reaction to You in the Royal Rumble (Hook x Fem!Reader):
Genre: Fluff and Angst headcanon
Summary: How Hook would react to you being in the Royal Rumble
Word Count: 821
Supreme Speaks: OKAY SO, i decided to do a headcanon reaction only cause I couldn't decide. i hope that was okay. Anyways, i hope the anon who requested this likes it and so does everyone else. like always my requests and inbox are open to all. ALSO, i hope everyone is doing well and remember you are loved and appreciated.
Warnings: slightly proofread
Taglist: @hooks-martin @wwenhlimagines @triscillal @sheinthatfandom @diabloguapos
Imma do both
Dating Hook (Tyler) would be everything I said in this post (shameless plug)
However, I feel like he would be more protective of you due to you being in the WWE
He would hate the distance and the fact that your schedules didn’t align with each other
But when he heard that you would be in your first royal rumble
He immediately told Tony that he had to be there to support you
I mean it’s your first major pay-per-view, it was pretty exciting
Especially after a great year of wins and championships in NXT
Many people anticipated you to win and go on to Wrestlemania
Anyways, Tyler would get on the first plane to San Antonio with Ricky Starks (who was there to support Cody Rhodes)
Tyler was dripped out in your merchandise (most likely a hoodie)
He made sure you were warmed up; helping you with stretches, giving you a pep talk
He watched the match with you until you were given five minutes
You kissed him and walked over to the gorilla and waited for your music to start (you were #30)
As your music hit the arena, the crowd went wild as your music shocked them and your opponents
Then, what happened next would shock you and go down in your career
Winning the Royal Rumble:
You started to whoop everyone’s ass upon entering the ring
Rhea, Liv, Nikki, everyone caught your hands
Tyler was smiling from ear to ear as you suplexed people left and right
Ricky looked over at him and started to clown him
“Awe, lil Hook is in love! Look at the hearts in his eyes”
“Shut up before you’re suplexed”
Hook was taking videos of the screen and posting them to his private story
After you eliminated 4 competitors, it was just down to you and Rhea
The crowd was loud for both of y’all, making the floors shake
You circled around each other before coming to blows
After fighting and close calls for ten minutes, you dumped Rhea over the top rope with a dropkick
The crowd cheered loudly, standing on their feet and congratulating you
While you were crying and yelling with happiness, Tyler was backstage dapping Cody and Ricky up
A smile stretched across his face as he clapped loudly and said “That’s my baby”
When you made your way backstage, you immediately hugged and kissed Tyler
Who kept whispering “I’m so fucking proud of you” in your ear
You smiled and thanked him before going around the room and thanking everyone else in the room
Later that night, Tyler uploaded a picture of you pointing to the Wrestlemania sign with a heart and the caption “my lil winner/future champion”
Getting Eliminated:
As it came down between you and Rhea, you felt yourself growing tired
Even though you entered at #30, you wrestled for 45 minutes
You hoped no one could tell but one person did and that was Tyler
Backstage, Tyler grew silent as he analyzed your moves
He noticed you were moving sloppier and slower and he grew worried
You would try to fight Rhea back, it was difficult seeing how she is one of the strongest members of the roster
Ricky and Cody kept telling him “She’s fine, she’ll be okay”
He knew that but he couldn’t help his feelings
Tyler looked back up at the screen, just in time to see Rhea do her finisher on you and then dumped your body over the top rope
He sighed and his heart shattered as he saw your limp body become a little ball
You looked up at Rhea celebrating with tears in your eyes
On one hand, you were happy that your friend would get her Wrestlemania moment
On the other, it was your time for success and happiness; You did everything you could just to be entered the match but came up short
You started to beat yourself up mentally as you were making your way backstage
Tyler immediately hugged you as you silently cried
He rubbed your back and whispered “You did great sweetheart. I’m so fucking proud of you either way. You’re gonna get to Wrestlemania by yourself.”
After leaving the arena, he took you to your favorite fast-food spot to cheer you up
As you sat in the parking lot eating with Tyler (who was going on about how he’s gonna kick Big Bill’s ass), a smile was placed on your face as you remembered what he has done for you
This man called out of work, traveled thousands of miles, and took you out all because he loves you
Even though you lost the match, you felt like a winner cause you are able to say Tyler is the best boyfriend you could ever have
Overall, Hook is that boyfriend who loves you and who will support you win or lose, rain or shine

*Judge reading from a stack of papers*
"And I see here it says you then told the cashier unprompted 'If Tony the Tiger was my boyfriend...let's just say there wouldn't be any fur left.' to which the cashier asked you to specify what you meant and you winked at her and said 'What If I told you I want to fuck tony the tiger' to which she replied 'You and me both brother.' She dapped you up and that's when the man entered the store with a pistol correct?"
*loudly whispering to my lawyer across the room*
"I don't like this guy's accusatory tone tbh."

2½ hrs into RAW and I'm just now noticing you front row again (I'm the anon from the last time). Hope you had fun! Did you go to any of the AEW shows that were in Texas recently or are you just a WWE guy?
I wondered if you'd catch me! 😂
I went to AEW last time they were in the Austin area, I'm not as locked in with them as I am WWE, but I've got a few favorites over there and they were so close to me I had to try. I was hoping I'd catch Sting during his farewell tour but he missed that week. I'm a huge fan of Toni Storm since becoming Timeless, and there are a ton of matches at All In I'm really excited to see.
Highlight of my night was getting to tell Maxine that her hair looked amazing, Bronson Reed being three feet from me, and dapping up Pat.
It's a good time, and pro wrestling is one of the only things I really remember well from my childhood. Play wrestling with pops, watching during the Attitude Era, watching the Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon ladder match a couple dozen times when I had a box set of tapes. Was even around the business at one point in my life, so it's kinda healed my inner child a bit getting to treat myself to shows. I love my silly little theatrical fist fighting. 😂

Name: dean :D
Age: 18
Your time zone: EST
What do you do for work: I’m in school right now so nothing, but this summer (probably in a couple weeks) I’m working at a pool store and maybe an ice cream shop
Do you have any pets?: yes!! I have a calico cat named Salem, she’s my best friend and so cute I love her so much
What first drew you to the fandom: I kept seeing clips of shameless on TikTok, I finally caved and started watching it over the summer, and I got hooked ever since (averaged a season and a half in a day), lurked around the fandom for a while but then started majorly interacting. I’ve never been normal about anything I’ve ever consumed, this is no exception (autism goes brrrr)
Morning person or night owl?: night owl baby!! Earliest you’ll get me up is 10am, I’ll go to sleep around 3-4 am (I also have insomnia)
What are your hobbies?: any type of art or craft, I paint, sew, draw, bookbind and just random miscellaneous stuff, my last art project was making spikes for my jacket from soda cans. I also read, like, a lot, mainly fanfiction bc special interest, but also I love non fiction (essays, memoirs, political theory) and some fiction (I love love love horror), I’m a major Jack of all trades, just constantly looking for something new to try
How tall are you?: 5’6” baby!
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?: anywhere warm and with a beach, I love summer and I’m built for it, I’ve considered New Orleans a lot for some reason, maybe California but I also hate west coast culture so um there’s that
Favorite color: yellow !! My and my siblings were color coded to prevent fights, and yellow was my color as a kid and it’s just stayed my favorite, and people always unanimously agree yellow is a color that Suits Me, saying i have yellow and sunshine energy, it also just best on me compared to other colors
Favorite book: this is such a hard choice, im going to say the perks of being a wallflower I think, ultimate comfort book really, but I also love to talk and think about Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison
Favorite movie?: it’s a horror movie called the empty man, it’s SO weird and SO fucked up with the most normal and sane horror protagonist
Favorite fic: I could never choose, one I’ve been thinking about A Lot is the origins of girldadism, but I also love meanest hunk of woman and enemy lines I’ll recommend them till the day I die
Favorite musical artist: I love love love Green Day i could talk abt them forever I’m going to see them in concert this summer and I’m SO freaking excited, honorable mentions are Noah kahan and old dominion
What is your average screen time so far this week?: 8 hours and 10 minutes. Higher than I was expecting considering all I’ve been doing is studying
What’s the first app you open in the morning: Spotify! I need music all the time ever, it helps me get going in the morning on weekdays, and on weekends either tumblr, discord, or Instagram depending on who’s texted me
How long have you been on tumblr: I think this summer will be 6 years?
finally (and i know this one is hard) tell me a fun fact about yourself: I’m learning my third language (Ukrainian) and planning a fourth (French, probably in college (I’m so done with Spanish bffr)) I also make my own recycled paper! I think that’s always fun to mention
I’m tagging:
@mickeym4ndy @astaraels @em-harlsnow @mickittotheman @transmickey
@transmurderbug
@atthedugouts @jademickian @liza420
And anyone else who wants to !! Ur welcome to do so !! And no pressure, you can otherwise consider this a friendly hello, fist bump, dap, and/or an “I’m thinking of you”

Cold Hearted: Chapter 2
Modern AU Law x Fem!Black Reader
previous chapters:
1
TW: some angst, smoking (weed and cigarettes), fighting, cussing, blood, violence, bullying
Chapter 2 is here!!
Note: I feel like this is going slow but please stick with me. Also I know the blood blood fruit is not real but I figured why not 🤷🏽♀️. I also just wanted to give a small flashback of Y/Ns life that you'll learn more about as the chapter go on.
Sunday, August 14th
"We're called the Straw Hats, wanna join?"
Luffy ask with a huge smile on putting a straw hat on his head. 'Well the name makes sense'. You thought some more about Luffys strange request considering almost everyone just met you.
"Fuck it why not." You say shrugging your shoulders.
You were a pretty spontaneous person and you were always down to do anything if it were reasonable.
Luffy starts laughing and patting his knee like crazy "that's great welcome to the crew." He gleams with joy.
You laugh and smile thinking about how cool Luffy is. You're sitting at a big round table in what appears to be your guys dining room. To your left is Nami, to your right is Robin, and Luffy is sitting on the table facing you.
You've never seen anyone like Luffy before and he definitely surprises you the more that you get to know him. As you look away from Luffy you see a blonde haired man making googly eyes at you for a little too long.
"Soooo I'm Sanji and does a gorgeous woman like you have a name." He flirts.
"I'm Y/N L/N it's nice to meet you Sanji, you're not bad yourself."
Sanji isn't used to other women flirting back with him so he has an instant nosebleed reaction which lands him on the floor muttering "She called me handsome."
A green haired man walks in with an adorable looking raccoon on his shoulder.
"Get off the floor you curly eyebrowed freak." He growls.
"Screw you moss head." Sanji barks back getting up.
You direct your attention to this apparent moss head, observing him 'he's cute' you thought but before can say anything you see this cute looking raccoon on his right shoulder and suddenly you jump up with excitement
"OMG he is soooo cute, what's your name and what are you?"
He gleams "Awe silly you don't have to call me that, it's not like it's makes me happy or anything." This makes you laugh harder.
"His name is Chopper, Tony Tony Chopper and he's a reindeer, I'm Roronoa Zoro."
He extends a hand for you to shake and you gladly do so. He looks you up and down almost either admiring your figure or he's giving you a mental background check.
You blush deciding to be delusional and think he's checking you out.
"I'm Y/N L/N, it's nice to meet both of you" you smile.
He nods and then looks over at Usopp who is sitting on the couch playing a video game on the PS5.
"Ya Usopp you tryna run and get some saké with me," Usopp gets up and turns off the playstation.
"You only want me to go with you cause you'll get lost even with the GPS."
Usopp was the first to greet you when you walked into the house and of course he didn't fail to mention that he's some famous 'sniper king' and great inventor. You thought Usopp was also cute with his slick back, big puffy ponytail, and broad chest, it definitely made him look attractive in your opinion.
"Can you take me or not long nose."
Zoros voice agitated cause he's ready to drink. Usopp was gonna say no at first but then he remembered he needed to get something from the store anyway.
Usopp directs his attention over to you, "Hey Y/N do you smoke because I sell" pointing his fingers at you like he's trying to sell a product with a big grin.
"Okayy plug Usopp and yeah I do actually I had to bring my dap pen cause ya know can't have weed on the plane," your response sounded quirky; showing everyone your pink bedazzled dap pen.
"Wow you're definitely a girl," you hear Zoro say looking at your dap pen.
"Hey what is that supposed to mean, I think it's rather cute, it's very me." With a small pout and chuckle.
At this point Luffy is laughing uncontrollably, he might've took an edible earlier cause he laughing more than usual. Nami gets up from her seat and comes up behind Zoro hitting him in the back of head.
"SHUT UP ZORO, don't listen to him Y/N I think it's cute, do you think you can make me one?"
Your mouth is agape trying to not laugh at what just happened. Zoro mutter something under his breath walking to sit on the couch.
"Of course I can Nami, what about you Robin?"
Robin smiles "No thanks I don't smoke I prefer a nice drink with a book, I guess you could call me boring."
Sanji out of nowhere, "There is nothing wrong with you Robin, you are perfect the way you are my sweet beautiful gorgeous angel."
At this point everyone is dying laughing not phased by Sanjis antics. For the rest of the night you guys basically had an initiation for you since you just joined the Straw Hat crew. You guys drank and smoked some weed until you all retired to bed.
A/N I decided to not write Brook, Franky, and Jimbe into the book cause I wasn't sure how they would fit.
Timeskip~
You are sharing a room with Nami and Robin, after a long night of getting to know your new friend group and hearing about everyone's passion and devil fruit/speacial abilities. Also, seeing Luffy get the size of a house from eating all of Sanjis cooking was something you'll never forget. You all decided to head to sleep because you all had class in the morning.
To your surprise you, Nami, and Robin all have first semester Chemistry together as well as Intro to Greek Mythology. It made you happy to able to meet such kind people because you didn't receive much kindness growing up; you were bullied a lot as a kid.
You were heading to sleep but you couldn't help but think about your passion and dreams of traveling the whole world; spreading joy to people around the world whether it be through music or spiritual healing.
Your mom knew you ate a rare and powerful paramecia devil fruit...The Blood Blood Fruit giving you the ability to control peoples bodies using their blood, you can also use your own or other peoples blood as defense when you have to fight.
With your power you can take lives and save lives making you rather important and an asset to the world government. If you had to choose you'd do everything in your power to protect those who couldn't protect themselves.
Your family spent years on the run before finding a Ping Fort Island in the North Blue, hiding from the World Government. Your mom did a good job of concealing your identity by making it seem like you died while traveling and changing your last name in order to get the World Government off your back, which is why you were able to have a simple life living in Ping Fort Island.
You roll over in your bed thinking about the episode from your childhood that led to you eating that damn fruit when you were younger and your family was living on the East Blue.
Flashback~
You were just a kid living on the East Blue with your mom, dad, and baby sister with big hopes and dreams. You were a shy kid who had a hard time making friends because you lacked social skills. But, there were three little boys in your village who would pick on you quit often.
Back then you didn't know how to fight or speak up for yourself so you would let them bully you. One day the boys took you deep into the forest. But before they left you they shoved a devil fruit down your throat and they told you to find your way back. You couldn't find your way back to the village and you were scared; missing for two days.
You ended up making your way back to the village and your parents were worried sick. When you saw the boys again you were angry but, they didn't care. They kept harassing and picking on you until you let your anger boil up and go too far. Let's just say one of the boys had his arm blown off without you even touching him.
Everyone in your village was scared of you which made you an interest for the world government because one of the boys snitched on you to his parents who told the world government. Your family escaped the island sometime later but, ever since leaving the East Blue you haven't been the same since. The light had been gone from your eyes for a long time but, you just recently was able to gain it back.
Currently no one else knows about your ability other than your family. Not even your best friend knows about your devil fruit, so you're even more scared that the straw hats might want to kick you out the crew if they learn about you. As you're thinking about tomorrow you ended up fall asleep and having a nightmare about losing control with your powers and hurting the people you love.
The Morning~
You decided to wear a pink mini skirt, white crop top and black chunky hightop sneakers (ya know with the thick white lace). You had some gold jewelry on with your gold necklace that had your name on it. you had light makeup on with a brown lip and gloss combo and you put your hair up in a cute style (your choice of style and I feel like Y/N got a belly piercing).
You were sitting at the table eating some bacon and eggs that you requested from Sanji, "Damn you can cook Sanji, that's very attractive." you flirt making Sanji blush and practically faint to the floor. You started giggling but, he soon got up when he realized that it's almost time for you guys to head out and Sanji wasn't even ready cause he kept gawking at you.
Today was your first day of class and it's current 7:45 am both, you and Sanji have class at 8am. Sanji offered to walk you to class but you declined because you didn't want him to get the wrong idea. You did however have him drop you off close to the building your class was in.
As soon a you got out the car Sanji didn't hesitate to roll down his window and start screaming "Y/N my love." you could hear him getting ready to embarrass you some more in front of everyone looking at you. So as you're walking you decide to close your eyes and imagine Sanjis body, the warmth of his skin and his blood coursing through him it struck a happy nerve in you knowing how warm his body was.
To Be Continued…
Thank you for reading 🙂.

[ID: A digital illustration that looks like it was made of construction paper. A grid of eight Garfield head shapes on a background of blue, five of them look like orange paper stuck to the background, the other three are cutouts revealing glimpses of a photograph of leaves and palm trees. "July 2024" is scrawled at the top of the image. End ID.]
I have decided not to feel bad that this year is for about-two-hour playlists. Cassette tapes never went over 120, why should I. And my summer mixes are always heavily influenced by the rattling contents of auntie and uncle's tape collections. I decided to indulge myself this month which is why my favourite Harry Nilsson and Donovan songs are on here, sorry, I love them, they follow me around like puppies.
Related media to some of the songs:
Player's 'Baby Come Back' was a key song in the movie Riddle of Fire which is great, big recommend if you like movies about troublemaking kids with the aesthetics of Return to Witch Mountain. Here's a trailer.
'Shoes Untied' is the first song from Pony Talk, which grew out of members of The Downhill Jam, which is a Tony Hawk Pro Skater cover band and a good bunch of folks.
'You've Got That Edge" is the single from Urban Heat's upcoming album, which you can preorder now, they're maybe my favourite new-to-me band I've stumbled across this year.
Anyway here's a link to July's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.
Embedded, if you like that sort of thing:
'Lazy River' - The Mills Brothers
'It's a good day (to fight the system)' - Shungudzo
'Baby Come Back' - Player

'CAUTION!!!' - CerVon Campbell
'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' - Boy Jr.
'Axel F' - Thomas Foster

PUNDIT PICKS: "THE CREAM" of the Crop [My Favorite Albums of 2024 (*so far*)]
ICYMI, my ongoing series on the best of 2024: https://therappundit.tumblr.com/post/756082881246461952/the-pundits-picks-more-of-2024s-finest-part
***Please note: the selections on this list had to have dropped by 8/31/24, FYI***
Back in June/July, I began compiling what would become my ongoing "best of" list for 2024. I wasn't trying to rank my favorite music at that point, I was mostly concerned that the weekly onslaught of new music throughout the year could lead to a noteworthy piece of art missing these ears, and slipping through the cracks. I wanted to close out *the summer* with a list of my favorite albums of the year up through the end of summer, and I planned on releasing that list to public scrutiny at the end of Labor Day weekend...
It is now October.
Welp, plans are meant to be flexible, I guess. 😬 Timing be damned, I want to share with the world all of the shout-outs I possibly can, the cream of the crop, my favorite albums of the year as we closed out the summer season (bring on hoodie season, that tends to be when I feel like me the most).
And in no particular order, here are some of my favorite albums of 2024 [*up through the end of summer*]: Out Of The Blue by Blu & Shafiq Husayn, Lil Old Town by DJ Lucas & DVNTBEATS, WE DON'T TRUST YOU by Future & Metro Boomin, Pinball by MIKE & Tony Seltzer, For Hustlers Only by WB Nutty, MMCHT by Nickelus F., The Pride & Glory by Teller Bank$ & Ed Glorious, Nubian Cruiser by Ronday, Black Box: JOSHUA IS DEAD by Joshua Virtue, Black & Whites by Big Hit, Hit-Boy & The Alchemist, the First to Make Contact When We Dap by R.A.P. Ferreira & Fumitake Tamura, Shadowbox by Mavi, EMBERGO_ by Nakama., DOOF & ESCEE 2 by Doof, Escee & August Fanon, So Much Enrgy & Sav by Ysr Gramz & enrgy beats, Mr Beat The Road by Bossman Dlow, soul food for the family by rimhan, WATCH THE THRONE by Jaeychino, Marciology by Roc Marciano, PLAYWAY OR NOWAY by RRB LILMEL, My Story Got Stories by Bruiser Wolf, BIG MYAAP, NOT THE LIL ONE by Myaap, The Tonite Show The Sequel by Curren$y & DJ.Fresh, Nobody Planning To Leave by ShrapKnel & Controller 7, CHUPACABRA by JasonMartin & DJ Quik, Scoob Wav by WTM Scoob, LOYALTY: BIRTH OF SUPER RUFUS by Rufus Sims & Billionaire Boyscout, Flint 2 Detroit by YN Jay, Plea$e Don't Think I'm Actin Funny by Bub Rock, BLUE LIPS by ScHoolboy Q, Memoirs In Armour by Navy Blue, Can't Go Bacc by Nino Paid, Day Shift, Vol. 1 by Lil Tre, Pigmen In the Vitreous by Knoweye, Brown in America by HOODLUM, Alchemy by Jay Cinema & Chow, All Infinite by Kooley High & Tuamie
24. A Forsaken Lover's Plea by Chuck Strangers
(I always look forward to new Chuck, who frequently racks up accolades as a producer, but never seems to get his just due as the great MC that he is. A true double-double threat with every release.)
23. Deathtape 2: We Gon' Need Each Other by Quelle Chris, Cavalier, and Denmark Vessey
(Any time one of these artists releases anything, you know it's must-cop art....so naturally when they all collaborate, they make one hell of a short but sweet haymaker of a project.)
22. DECON$TRUCT!ON by Maassai
(What was pitched as a collection of loosies recorded over the past few years came off as a sharp, memorable showcase for one of Brooklyn's most talented MC's.)
21. Save The Bees by Big Flowers & Messiah Musik
(Big Flowers is part of one of the greatest communities of exciting NY talent that we have seen in years, so pairing the thoughtful MC/producer with Messiah Musik - one of the most potent producers in underground hip-hop right now - yields a palette of sounds and messages that feel stronger with every listen.)
20. WOODSTOCK '99 by Nick Satchel & dp0mmy
(Nick really seemed to put his foot down into this one, shining alongside an old friend in Atlanta-by-way-of-St. Louis producer dp0mmy...who continues to raise the bar of what he can achieve sonically, remaining one of the greatest secret weapons in hip-hop right now. More on dp0mmy in the weeks to come...) 👀
19. Bag Man Julio by Jaysanityy
(A name you are sure to be more familiar with in the near future, the DMV's Jaysanityy is one of the most complete artists you will find in underground hip-hop. Check out any of his work, and I guarantee you will wonder why he's not already mentioned in the same breath as artists like Mavi, Pink Siifu, and Maxo.)
18. 74: Out of Time by Ol' Burger Beats
(Another fantastic, less heralded producer helms this compilation album, which is stacked with great songs from some of the indy world's finest, and sounds far too cohesive to leave off of my favorite album list.)
17. WAKING UP AND CHOOSING VIOLENCE by YUNGMORPHEUS & Alexander Spit
(Few MC's are able to sound so cutting with their words without sounding enraged quite like YUNGMORPHEUS, who has steadily put out some of the best rap music out of anyone's catalogue over the past 5-6 years. He's joined by another one of 2024's MVP's, Alexander Spit, who happens to be one of the most skilled producers at creating cool instrumentals to help support, rather than outshine, the messages of his MC's collaborators.)
16. This Too Shall Pass by Yo OG
(Rapidly becoming onf of my favorite MC's, No Label collective's Yo OG - sometimes shortened to just OG - is strong enough to carry an album on his own, but when he joins forces with other talented affiliates from No Label, it's clear that this whole team is about to be a force in hip-hop music.)
15. Black Blues Brothers by HALAL BOYS
(Representing Phoenix AZ, I knew nothing about Lord Ra and Gorgeous Jefe heading into 2024, but leaving 2024 they're high up on my radar as one of the most exciting duos I have heard in a while.)
14. Memory(ummm) by Sleep Sinatra & bloomcycle
(Speaking of 2024 MVP's...Sleep Sinatra is a tried and true veteran MC/producer that seems to be going the fine wine route, while bloomcycle - the producer alias of previously mentioned Big Flowers - also seemed to be making an impact on various different projects this year. Together they created a standout album, equally effective as a tightly made cohesive personal work as it is a collection of great collaborations with fellow amazing artists.)
13. SOLACE by Marco Plus
(To make a name for yourself coming out of Atlanta's deep, deeeeep music scene, and to do so without being already tied to a major industry name, or even delivering the "typical" type of crossover rap music that the ATL is known for, is pretty impressive. But once you hear Marco Plus spit, it's not too surprising. His ear for beats is only surpassed by his hungry delivery on the microphone, so of course it's no surprise that this year he has received dap from some of the most established artists in the ATL, like JID. I would say keep an eye out for Marco more in the future, but my guess is that he will knock down more doors and make a name for himself without anyone having to dig too deep to find his work.)
12. Almighty So 2 by Chief Keef
(Am I surprised that Chief Keef dropped one of my favorite albums this year? No, I'm more surprised that in 2024 I am so eager to hear his work at all. I was woefully late to - dare I say, straight up refused to board - the bandwagon for Keef. He has been buried on my "happy for him and his success, but I don't feel the need to hear anything else from this man" list since the "Bang" video. Sure, I dug more than a few Keef cuts over the years, here and there, while he was putting in work on project after project to become a better all around producer and recording artist. He really understands rap, trap, and how to deliver a sonically appealing album that in spite of his relatively limited subject matter, doesn't come off as cookie cutter. Almighty So 2 has been very well received, but garnered some "meh" responses from his core base, since this is probably his most accessible, polished, mainstream-ready project to date. But make no mistake, there is no lacking in raw energy and clever commentary, both are provided in abundance here, and we're all better for it. I can now say what I began to feel back with 4NEM in 2021: I am a Chief Keef fan.)
11. PERSEVERANCE by Jay Cinema & JUNE! as JUNECINEMA
(Sure they share great chemistry as MCs & Producers, but what shines through the most on PERSEVERANCE is their pure love of music. It's one thing to come off hungry, but to come off as being excited just to make and release music? That's become an increasingly rare commodity. JUNE! and Jay Cinema have really put their mark in underground hip-hop over the past two years, and this album feels like a culmination of their growth and confidence as recording artists. Take Jay's classic NYC MC swagger, plus JUNE!'s delivery that often reaches construction site levels of gravelly, then interweave clear shout-outs to their loves and musical influences, and you get a dope underground collaboration with strong replay value.)
10. Sour Dub by Rich Jones & SINAI.
(A unique talent that threads the needle between singing and rapping in a casual and authentic way - possibly the best to juggle both since a certain famous Canadian actor/rapper/singer, Rich Jones is always guaranteed to put out some interesting work. Here he joins forces with SINAI. a.k.a. Sleep Sinatra - and boy what a year he's had - and the two deliver some of the most grounded, feel-good somber music that I have heard in quite some time. I'm not sure if "feel-good somber music" is even a thing, but if it is, Rich & Sleep are maestros at the artform.)
9. 3rd Shift by J.U.S. & Squadda B
(I'm not as familiar with Squadda B as I probably should be, but I know he made an impact as one half of Oakland's Main Attrakionz. Here he delivers engaging, diverse production for Bruider Brigade's J.U.S, who I am more familiar with, as he has been near the top of my personal "most slept-on MC" list for several years strong now. Together their chemistry is sublime, with Squadda's slappin' beats providing ample space for J.U.S to speak his mind over.)
8. F.U.N. T.O.Y. by Sideshow
(Alexander Spit got busy on this one, tossing a varied collection of sounds at Sideshow to work with. In turn, the L.A. MC delivered another interesting piece of work, touching on a rolling list of thoughts, but not staying long enough in any one passing thought to reach a completion. While this could be problematic for a lot of artists, for Sideshow it works quite well, in my opinion. F.U.N. T.O.Y. feels like the equivalent of going on a long drive alone to clear your head, and jumping from song to song on the car radio. That might not be the most purposeful and effective drive in the world, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable or thought provoking. Sideshow is the epitome of a "leave them wanting more" MC.)
7. The Thief Next to Jesus by Ka
(The writer's writer returns. At this point, I don't know what else can be said about this man's pen, but from a longevity standpoint, let's talk about how challenging it must be to maintain a certain level of elite rapping - and well into one's fifties. Ka's experience as a MC is well documented, but as a producer, Thief lives amongst his finest, dare I day accessible production work. Here he keeps the darkness at bay with powerful soul, grit, and determination, delivering a fantastic album that doesn't denounce the purposes of devout faith, but parses the complexities behind keeping a religious mindset in today's world.)
6. sunscreen by shemar & Child Actor
(Likely the shortest project on this list, but surely one of the year's most potent. shemar speaks to a generation of artists that have grown up in and around NYC accepting the music of artists like Armand Hammer, and not as "alternative underground rap", but simply where the bar happens to exist today. In turn, on sunscreen shemar comes off with a stream of consciousness flow and a chip on his shoulder, which when combined with the raw and majestic smokiness of Child Actor's instrumentals, makes for an ear gripping listening experience. This is peak 3:00am on the L train music.)
5. Los Angeles by Blu & Evidence
(I'm not sure if any other MC can brag about having the sheer volume of dope music drop within the first 3/4 of a calendar year at Blu's level. The underground vet seems to be enjoying a hungry renaissance, releasing three albums by my own personal deadline for this list (another great piece of work with Exile has also been released since). The news of Blu releasing a full project with fellow west coast underground legend Evidence, was only surpassed by the actual final product. Los Angeles is a sonically phenomenal, lyrically on-point love letter/indictment of the coast's most infamous city. Hip-hop history is stacked with unforgettable releases that perfectly capture the soul and feeling of L.A. life, but I don't know if it's ever been done this successfully with such a full a collection of beautifully curated vintage 90's underground vibes.)
4. Different Type Time by Cavalier
(Cavalier had a great year. Folks in the know have been not-so-patiently waiting for this one, because whenever Cav drops anything it might not be the loudest album in the room, but it will always be one of the finest. When fans learned that this album was going to be released through modern day Def Jux-esque powerhouse and bily woods boosted record label Backwoodz Studioz, even higher expectations were bestowed upon Different Type Time. Cavalier might not be a New York City resident anymore, but the feeling across this album is an open diary of a wizened New Yorker, a grown man in the rap game that's seen enough light and darkness to know that day to day life will always end up being somewhere in the middle. Similarly to other razor-penned MC's like Ka and Skyzoo, Cav is not preoccupied with knockout punchlines as much as he is focused on making each bar land like it's own story, each a bittersweet memory over a swooning jazzy backdrop.)
3. Service Merchandise by Previous Industries [Open Mike Eagle, Video Dave, Still Rift]
(Sometimes the only thing capable of being funnier than a great stand-up comedian, is a group of old friends just shootin' the shit together. Comedy is dependent not only on well-written jokes, but also impeccable timing, chemistry, and a certain level of connection with the audience. Open Mike Eagle, Video Dave, and Still Rift have no trouble making a connection with their audience, and they know their voices well enough to probably finish each other's sentences, and stick the landing on any cultural reference within a verse. Service Merchandise is an underground rap album that could only be made during these times by middle-aged hip-hop artists that have long since come to terms with the fact that they just aren't destined to be flashing rollies in glossy rap videos surrounded by gyrating bikini models...and that's okay. Stacked to the brim with nerd nostalgia, pop culture references, and thematic homages to fallen retail chains - not to mention expert rapping, lyricism, and a laundry list of some of hip-hop's finest underground producers - Previous Industries excel at balancing the art of waxing nostalgic without dismissing the positivity that could come from the present and future. Fellow writer/music thirster, the great Son Raw, spoke positively of the album as well, matching it to De La Soul vibes, and surely that's a comparison to be proud of.)
2. #RICHAXXHAITIAN by Mach-Hommy
[The mysterious Mach man strikes again. After what felt like a long enough delay to start asking "is it actually dropping, or was it scrapped?", Mach-Hommy released #RICHAXXHAITIAN in May to strong reviews, albeit with less hype than what came with the first album listening session back in 2023. A handful of familiar guests, as well as a handful of expected trademarks (Mach is still successfully "flippin' _____ like" whenever possible) made the album feel like a Mach album, but musically he was working with a higher level of pristine selections. Without losing any hint of his unpredictability or raw delivery, Mach managed to work in an additional layer of polish or two, curating each song on the album as if "this could be the one". Thoughtful, culturally attuned to his Haitian American status, and as willing to dip a toe in experimental territory as he's ever been, if #RICHAXXAITIAN isn't Mach-Hommy's most well-rounded album thus far, it's damn near close.]
1. Sewaside III by Mike Shabb
(Montreal, stand up. Whatever Mike Shabb may lack due to his youth, he more than makes up for it with his body of work in hip-hop, utility knife of talents. Shabb is an elite beatmaker and MC, and he possesses a rare assortment of skills that work equally well with both trap and boom-bap sensibilities. He may have the highest ceiling of any MC on this list, because like other gifted artists like MIKE, Earl Sweatshirt, and Vince Staples, he represents a modern MC that doesn't see a problem with placing Lil Baby and Roc Marciano back to back on the same mixtape. Sewaside III is a great representation of how Shabb continues to grow more polished with each release, without sacrificing his raw underground essence. Staring at the last few months of 2024, if this one ends up being my favorite rap album of the year when the ball drops on Dec. 31st, I will be quite fine with that.)
Next up...my favorite SONGS of the year (*as of the end of summer*)...thanks for reading, and stay tuned!

29th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards raises money for DAP Health
*Darren Edit
The 29th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards took place on Saturday night, benefitting DAP Health, a critical organization that has been serving the Coachella Valley for nearly 40 years.
Headline performer Darren Criss caught up with News Channel 3 on the star-studded blue carpet before hitting the stage.
"I have some songs in my back pocket. Hopefully we get the people moving and grooving and raising lots of money," Criss said. "Things like DAP health are kind of a no brainer to show up for. And there's not much I can do, but if I can sing a couple of songs and make people give them money, then hey, I'm happy to do whatever little I can."
Tony nominee Saycon Sengbloh also performed at the event, saying, "People can look forward to hearing some amazing powerhouse songs. Hopefully, they can look forward to this razzle dazzle dress. And just I think they can look forward to great food and supporting a wonderful cause."
Actor and host of the night, Michael Urie, added, "And then also some beautiful speeches from some people who are deeply affected by DAP Health and whose lives had been bettered and sometimes saved by DAP Health"

R.A.P Ferreira & Fumitake Tamura – The First Fist To Make Contact When We Dap (2024)
New guest writer Tony Le Calvez (contributor at Amplifiedsd) looks at The First Fist To Make Contact When We Dap, the new album from alternative hip hop artists R.A.P Ferreira and Fumitake Tamura, released January 24th on Ruby Yacht & Alpha Pup Records.
The album works on two levels: in the shallows it’s expertly produced, pleasant to the ear, and flows from track to track in an interesting and captivating way. What lies undeniably under the surface, like gators in a lagoon, is the complexity of Ferreira’s storytelling and lyrical mastery. These two listening experiences work in tandem, either letting me relax and enjoy it in blissful, appropriate ignorance, or grabbing me by the collar, shaking me and demanding I dig deeper into the record’s prophetic truth.

How would the guys react to finding out Tony’s dating one of the Stacies since they’re on opposing teams and all that
I would say for the most part they wouldn't care. Gordon just wouldn't want him getting distracted too much from practice or giving away their secrets (especially since he knows she's friend with Stacie T) but otherwise wouldn't care. Chris definitely wouldn't care lol. Rico would probably dap him up and want to know about her.
Helmut and Dorian might feel some kind of way. Helmut would probably warn him to stay focused and not let her sidetrack him, and Dorian would accuse him of fraternizing with the enemy, but nobody is taking him seriously so...
