youtube
Mēs staigājām roku rokā, Es un dievišķais Kas. Auksti šķindēja oļi, Zemi apara nakts.
Kā sirdspuksts gailēja tumsā, Gribas zvērīgā acs, Un nāve zaudēja ticības spozmi, Zuda asiņu balss.
Vien gaisma kā eņģeļu koris Dūra sāpīgi man. Vēji saauga kopā, Miesu pameta gars.
Kā sirdspuksts gailēja tumsā, Gribas zvērīgā acs, Un nāve zaudēja ticības spozmi, Zuda asiņu balss.

Saw The Ritual Slaughter of Gorge Mastromas in Daile Theatre and it was pretty good. Finally, a good play this year whose story actually gripped me.

27, Nessa and Steven
Uh, this one got a bit long.
Cities always look so different earlyin the morning. With luck you may see two or three people on your wayand you wonder where they are going or where they’re coming from. Itcould be anything. The boring answer is work. But at this hour itcould as well be because the people don’t wish to be seen ordisturbed. And that opens up a whole new array of options.
But when spoken of a port city early inthe morning it means literally empty, completely silent. Both the sunand and returning fishermen are still an hour away. There is noreason for anyone to be out. But would there be such emptiness andsilence if there was no one observing it? Everything looksalmost…fake. The houses sitting next to each other with no onegoing in or out, the benches carefully laid out along the streetsand parks the marketplace stalls closed. It was like a theatre set.It only came alive when the cast arrived, performed their part andthen left the stage empty again.
For every rule there is always anexception and this time the exception was a man with a sturdy casewalking down the streets of Canalave city. Oddly enough, Steven Stonealmost preferred Canalave this way. He always felt like a stranger inport cities, their life and patterns were so distinctly differentfrom everything else. Being the only one in the city made him feellike he could actually seethe city itself for the first time.
Stevendid not hurry but he made his way to the library faster than he wouldduring the day. The old building was like the others, still andsilent. It used to be an old cargo hall so it didn’t particularlystand out. Only the entrance was different, inviting. Next to theheavy wooden doors was a woman, smoking a cigarette. Steven raisedhis hand in greeting and the woman responded, dumping her cig.
”Youmust be Mr. Stone. Good morning.”
”Morning.Pleasure to meet you mrs..?”
”Miss.Croft.”
”Ms.Croft.”
Ms. Croft was a slender woman with aposture of nobility and a chiseled face that made her age impossibleto guess. She looked sharp and perceptive but Steven guessed she hadbeen stayin up all night. Probably a night owl. The time runsdifferently for researchers.
”I apologize for the very earlyappointment. All of our spaces are fully booked until…well, let’ssay it’s nearly impossible to get a vacant room these days. Even fora league champion.”
”It’s quite alright”, Stevenassured. ”I prefer the calm of the morning to get work done.”
”Right. This way, Mr. Stone.”
Croft led him through the main hall, vast and open, still reflecting the days of its industrial use. Theyhad fully embraced the industrial feel with this place. The shelveswere made of steel, very bare and simple and as high as the ceilingallowed. They had had to install safety nets to prevent people fromhurting themselves when they fell from the top shelves. Ms. Crofttook Steven to a set of stairs that led into an old control room. Ithad the perfect view over the entire library hall and on the otherside windows to the sea.
”I figured you might like this room”,Croft smirked. ”Place the case on the desk over there. Let’s see ifyou actually have something in there.”
”I was told you had found someone whocan decipher these?”
”Yes. Ms. Daile is yet to arrive, sowe might as well get started.”
Steven did as told and carefully openedthe case. It held two stone plates, vagely diamond shaped, one wasbright red and the other dull gray. As simple as they were in shapethe carving on them was incredibly detailed.
If Croft had previously seemed alertnow her entire composition tightened. She hustled to the desk.
”Well well well well”, she couldn’tremove her eyes from the stone plates. ”When I was told you mighthave something valuable I didn’t expect…how did you come to possesthese?”
”I found them”, Steven blurted. ”Ihave been doing underground expeditions for years. I have never foundanything like this. Until now.”
”It’s hard to believe youjust found them. Ourexperts have been doing such expeditions as well but they haven’tfound anything in decades.” Croft moved her hand over the redplate, afraid to touch it.
”These glyphs…I have only seen themon similar plates we have in our collection.”
”How many do you have?”
”Only three. One from ourexpeditions, two from private collections.”
”Can you translate any of it?”
Croft shook her head. ”Translatorsfor this specific Sinnoan are very, very scarce. Deciphering theseglyphs is a craft that is is very tedious to learn since it hardlyappears anywhere else. Hence why it’s also seen as a useless skill. Icould never find the time to invest in learning it.”
Steps on metal moved their attention from the stone plates.
”Ah,finally.” Croft swept to the door and opened it. The utter dismayon Steven’s face couldn’t have been deeper when he saw the youngwoman step into the room. Tall, blonde mess of hair, the same defiantlook in her eyes that Steven last saw years ago.
”Ms. Daile, let me introduce youto–”
”Son of a bitch. It’s you.”
”My words. Give them back”, Nessagrunted.
If Croft was surprised she hid it well.”I take you two are acquainted”, she said with a stern, unimpressed tone. She glared at the two who were busy glaring at eachother, as if thy could make the other disappear if they stared hardenough.
”I hope this doesn’t disturb our work. Now, let’s get toit.”

INITIAL THUMBNAILS (Connotative & Denotative )
The Prompts
[From top-to-bottom, then left-to right]
Watch Drape I immediately thought of Salvador Dail’s piece, Persistence of Memory, 1931 (The painting with the melting clocks) and depicted a watch draped over. But I got too into the drawing of the watch, that I forgot to draw in what it would be draped over.
Devine Blueprint I wound up thinking of something akin to the Eye of Sauron. It’s supposed to be a Devine eye that watches over a tower, with light that drapes around. I imaged this illustrated in the style of Art Nouveau (particularly Alphonse Mucha.) With warm colours.
Wilderness Station Pretty much a wooden workshop in a tropical forest.
Ocean Construct I struggled to think up of a construct in the ocean that would align with Eye Works, but I came back to the idea of the eye/cog combination, which I formed akin to an ocean buoy.
Culture Twist It’s quite hard to tell, but the twist includes random monuments like Big Ben and The Angel of the North, plus random objects like fish & chips.) I then thought that the idea might work better with art supplies, so I shoehorned in some animation paper and a paint palette.
Climax Production The photo ruined the mark making, but it’s supposed to be a factory that omits toxic clouds that shape into a line chart (the arrow) that shows an increase in rates.
Peak Magnum Opus Bouncing off of the Devine Blueprint idea, I drew a screen (TV or theatre) that hails wings. Underneath, it has an orbit of art supplies (paint brush, bottle of ink)
Horror Cosmos I created a cosmos, that hosts a galaxy in the shape of an eye.
Chaos Alter I immediately thought of a priests alter, with animation paper as the holy scripture. The paper is set alight.
Clutter Jam The Eye Works title is a printer, that’s printing out animation paper. I drew a printer behind it, as I didn’t think the thumbnail conveyed that this is supposed to be a printer.
Plight Scaffolding // Arena Assembly Not so much a plight, but I thought of a city built using film and art tools. The film spools are coming loose and some smaller equipment (pens and ink) would represent vehicles,
Landscape Operation // Landscape Enterprise A landscape spread, but is made up of cogs and industrial equipment. Spilled ink represents a river. A cog in the sky as the sun, with air pollution as the clouds.
Performance Blueprint A blueprint that shows movements and concept art of a ballerina.
Produce Clientele Watching from a screen (visually similar to Muse’s Drones album cover) a machine is mass-producing new clientele.
Demonstrate Opus An film reel, with a run cycle running around the rim. The film unfurls and flicks the running figure away from the reel.
Parade Experiment Just a parade of animation equipment, and a line of figures who spin paint brushes as batons.
Splash Manoeuvrer Paint pours and splashes into an eye’s iris.
Evolution Construction Shown as a walk cycle, each method of animation is progressing through the cycle. Starting with a rubber-hose figure drawn with dip pen, a stick man drawn with a pencil, a paint brush with a 50′s style figure (well... Intended to be), a tablet pen with a digital figure, up to a mouse that’s moulding a 3D figure.
Beam Production Thinking mostly of the beam, a laser cuts through steel, slicing the words “Eye Works.” A lot of fixings and tangled wires to seem more futuristic.
Flame Whirl // Blaze Assignment A whirlpool of flames and ink, swirling around. I couldn’t portray the flames and ink as different elements, even when I used sharper edges with the flames and more curves with the ink.
Embellish Craft // Bluster Art Akin to a printer, paintbrushes are painting on animation paper. These brushes represent CMYK colours, hence the four brushes. They’re printing the works “Eye Works.”
Smudge Blossoming // Splash Manoeuvrer // Flowering Trick I wanted to show a paint splat that forms a flower. In execution, I kept focusing on the splatter and didn’t define any outlines of a flower. An Eye may have been a better idea, but I focused more on “blossoming” and “flowering” in a more denotative sense.
Focus Break // Impression Assembly The word “break” made me think of Cherry’s idea of the broken screen (which I love), so it seeped into the thumbnail. In contrast, this thumbnail is supposed to show a broken screen, reforming from its broken shards.
Outline Construction My first attempt, which just looks like an onion skatepark.
Outline Construction // Panorama Ride // Impression Assembly // Evolution Construction // Ripening Framework Working off of the previous attempt, I depicted the theatre that will host the Eye Works Film Festival. The theatre is under construction, with scaffolding being built, braces and construction equipment surrounding the area. A crane is wheeling in the Eye Works logo onto the top of the theatre building.
Feedback
I showed my ideas to Claire and asked for some feedback. She thought my more connotative “Eye Works” inspired pieces were stronger than the denotative “animation film festival” inspired ideas.
In particular, Claire was drawn to Ocean Construct, Devine Magnum Opus, Produce Clientele, Demonstrate Opus, and the final Outline Construction. She was also fond of the Puzzle Cinema Hilarity piece.
Ocean Construct - She thought it proved the most interesting idea to work with (which seems like the most popular, when I ask others.) I could incorporate more industrial ideas into this concept. Maybe something could be holding it up or pulling it into the ocean. Are there more constructs or replicas of this ‘eye cog’?
Devine Magnum Opus - She liked the general idea and imagery, but thought it lacked something. When I told her that the screen was supposed to depict the static from a cut signal, she was more on-board.
Produce Clientele - Whilst I’m not so fond of this one (only because I keep thinking of Drones,) Claire thought the imagery is quite strong. It could be combined with the ideas from Demonstrate Opus.
Demonstrate Opus - Whilst this idea is more denotative than the rest, Claire thought that I could combine this idea with Produce Clientele. The running men could be produced and dropped onto the reel, rather than them flicker off the film strip. Or I could use both ideas. It’s something to think about.
Outline Construction - Whilst the idea seems interesting, Claire informed me that others in class have shown similar concepts and that it would be a good idea to stray away from this. Which is a shame, because I quite liked this.
Puzzle Cinema Hilarity - Claire thought this idea has promise, which is an opinion someone else has told me. I should keep this one in mind, but the others are more interesting.
Extra - Claire also advised that I could shape the leaflet interior to reflect off the mood and shapes of my final poster. My typography should reflect off the mood and shapes of which idea I ultimately choose.
What Should I Do Next?
From here, I can develop my stronger ideas and come up with a more solid concept for each. Whichever proves the most appealing, I’ll use for the final poster.
To compliment the idea, I’ll need to develop a typeface, a title and the colour scheme I’ll be working with. What art style shall I use?

♥️ 📷 Līga Tīfenberga (at Dailes Theatre)

Ja izrādē ieviestu mobilos telefonus, daudzi lugas pārpratumi zaudētu jēgu, jo to vienkārši nebūtu. Tāpat rekvizīts ir avīze, kuru Džons Smits bija spiests apēst.
Scenogrāfs Artūrs Bērziņš ir radījis vizuāli ļoti krāšņus divus dzīvokļus, pat neatdalot tos vienu no otra ar sienu, jo skatītājiem uzreiz skaidrs, ka vienīgais kopīgais “elements” abos dzīvokļos ir biežāk prom esošais vīrs jeb Smita kungs – citādi dzīvokļi ir pietiekami atšķirīgi. Atbilstoši radīta scenogrāfija var ļaut galvenajiem varoņiem (aktieriem) izcelties vai arī tos pazudināt, ja, piemēram, kāda konstrukcija uz skatuves būs pārāk iespaidīga. Vērojot galveno varoņu darbošanos šajās telpās, secināju, ka pati būtu gatava dzīvot kādā no šiem dzīvokļiem.

Ja man jautātu, ar cik punktiem no 10 ballēm es novērtētu šo izrādi, nešauboties atbildētu – 9 (teicami).
