My friend had two Australian shepherds along with two smaller dogs, they lived on a goat ranch in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. There was not much traffic on their road, no one came up to their property but the dogs had taken it upon themselves to guard the front yard anyway.

Every hour or so, for seemingly no reason, the dogs would run what we called “fire drills” where one of the Aussies would start barking, they would all charge full speed through the house, out of the dog door and around the yard. Once they were satisfied the yard was secure they would go back in and lay down.

We could not deter them, they had assigned themselves a job and by god they were going to do it.

fun thing about herding and/or generally neurotic breeds: they are really good at following rules you have instituted, but they will also make their own Dog Rules they will follow stringently whether or not you like it
