Aaron minyard who watches his brother kill their mother and still finds him the safest person to stand next to.
Aaron minyard who knows his brother has killed someone, who sits with a neutral stony expression when sober and a manic smile when drugged.
Aaron minyard who watches his brother get arrested for taking on four men in an alleyway to protect their cousin.
Andrew minyard who still shares a dorm room with his brother despite it all.
They dont get along at worst and sit in silence at best. But Aaron knows hes safe with him.
Just somethin somethin about Aaron minyard whose brother barely talks to him but kills their mother for him, who forcefully helps get him clean and never tells anyone about it.
Who sat outside the closed bathroom door to bring him food and new clothes as he broke his addiction, who killed his abuser the second he could plan how to do it without risking Aaron in the process as well.
Aaron who knows on some level that Andrew knows about Katelyn, but never openly tells Aaron to cut her off, doesnt stop Aaron from ever sneaking away to see her.
Andrew doesn’t like it, but he knows the importance of privacy when it comes to his family, and he knows hes being a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to Roland.
(And he knows hes willing to let Aaron have a little bit of Katelyn if it means he gets to keep his brother)
Aaron Minyard who sees his brother being hurt for the first time and doesnt hesitate to cross the bedroom and beat Drake to death.
Aaron Minyard who works a backliner position, meant to protect the goal, protect the goalie. Moving faster than the striker in the room to protect his brother.
Aaron Minyard who for the first time is the one protecting his brother and doesnt know how to feel about it. Lashing out at Neil thinking he’s trying to hurt his brother too. Being told the way he compares Neil to Drake is the same way Andrew compares Katelyn and Aarons past girlfriends to Tilda.
Aaron at a loss realizing that despite growing up separate most of their lives that him and Andrew are more alike than either of them care to admit to one another

ok now that ive finished it heres my tgr thoughts
ok lets start with the bits i loved:
i almost screamed when we saw andrew and kevin on page and the fact that neil didnt tell either of them he was going to california AND that they instantly knew that he was behind graysons death. DELICIOUS. tbh every time any of the foxes were on page i was smiling so big
the ravens getting suspended so early??? INSANE choice that i dont think any of us saw coming, like in the last 10 years of fic we always had a crazy trojans-ravens rematch. i cant deny i was dying to see the trojans wipe the floor with the ravens like they deserve to but at least this way jean never has to visit evermore again😍😍😍 that whole scene was truly incredible though like dan tackling someone to protect kevin??? the fact it took multiple people to pull andrew off the raven who hurt neil???? the fact that matt and aaron INSTANTLY went for the ravens who attacked andrew??? NEILS BROKEN RIBS??? that last part is 100% gonna come up again, idr who knows about it but as soon as one of the trojans connects jeans broken ribs to neils theyre gonna know exactly how jean was injured
also the scene with jean having his breakdown in front of rhemann almost brought me to tears ... "fathers" 😭😭😭
OHHHH how could i forget, when jean throws bryson into lailas car!!!!!! what a fucking MOMENT jean moreau u will always be famous. and in the same vein the game where he says to his mark in french "you should be glad they have be on a leash" LOVE IT. character capable of insane violence just barely being held in check MWAH
and then the bit where hes teaching the freshman drills and he automatically raises his hand to strike them and then just bolts in the opposite direction😭😭 jean my baby i would love to know what was going on in his head at that point
its also very interesting how neils plan of "tell the fbi abt his father but nothing about the moriyamas" seems to be .... disintegrating ... the fact that so many outsiders are aware of something being super sus, what was that line? something like "how come two major crime lords got their sons into class 1 exy?" my prediction for book 3 is another ichirou appearance. idk what the fuck hes gonna do but hes gonna do something im so sure of it
this was only briefly touched on but jean getting to play without being injured .. my personal headcanon has always been that even though jean is already an incredible player hes actually better than anyone could have imagined bc hes always had to play through injuries, and that when he fully recovers hes simply unbeatable
also the whole "exy is not fun" exchange was so interesting ... makes me wonder if somehow jean will get a future where he doesnt have to play exy ......
ok now to my critiques. disclaimer that all of this is said with love and i will follow noras characters to the end of the fucking earth
but WHAT is up with the pacing?? in the original trilogy each book took place over ~3 months or so but in 2 books we havent even gotten to halloween?? how will we make it to finals in the last book??? either the last book will be a chonker or we will finally start getting small timeskips, tbh tho both are good options
i wanted so much more exy than we got, the practise scenes were amazing with jean doing his whole "just call me and you will recieve the ball exactly how you need it" AMAZING SHOWSTOPPING INCREDIBLE but then during the games the pov is so checked out .. i understand the narration will never be the same as neils but like, during the second on page game it wasnt even stated who was winning until the end???? i ws literally reading like COME ON GUYS PAY ATTENTION PLS
also this isnt a big deal but i cant be the only one who noticed the epithets💀 "the frenchman" "the grey-eyed backliner" nora come off ittttt just say his name!!!!!!!
anyway in conclusion: cannot wait for book 3. thank u nora for my life. if any of my aftg mutuals want to hop in my dms PLS feel free im clawing the walls over here

on naielle odelia, florian de kasimir, and the idea of sacrifice
naielle is a celestial warlock. she's a backliner, a combination support and damage.
florian is a man at arms, a soldier, armed with sword and shield. a front liner, a tank, a consistent damage dealer.
being in the front lines means risk is always present. and florian considers it his duty, his obligation, to remain. he considers the idea of fleeing first to be a violation of his job.
he is deeply afraid. he always is. but he has to be the first and final line of defence.
when he was killed, time froze, and he saw the state of his friends, battered and near death. he saw the monster that stood before them.
he had once taken great umbrage with a man who had made an ill-thought out deal with the devil.
and when push came to shove, and the devil held out his hand, florian took it. because if he didnt, his friends would die. it wouldve been a waste.
naielle's devil hangs over her head, a sword of damocles. you are a healer, aren't you? the front line will fall without you. you must run in, and you must help them.
her devil is not her patron. her devil is herself.
florian is constantly aware of the danger he is in, and considers himself illsuited to all of it, and simultaneously suited to nothing else. all he can be is a sharp object pointed at a villain. when mauled near death, watching the party's witcher fall, he ordered the retreat, and unable to stand still tried to protect the party doctor's spirit.
naielle forgets her own risk. she sees the threat posed to someone else, the blood that issues forth, and she sees the solution held in her hands. she would be a failure not to administer it. withholding the cure from the dying would go against everything she tries to believe and hold herself to. she does not balance it with the idea that her premature death might leave things worse. its the now, now, now.
she'll defend the man defending her, even if he says she shouldnt.
when the mission came down to it, and the devil's plans laid bare, florian considered it his moral duty to lay down his life. he could not stomach to kill the woman who had brought him here, to betray her so utterly. but for the party priest, he paused. because to give up himself, to act as Emelia's final defence, he would doom the priest. The two would either die at the traitors hands, or by a devil collecting on unkept promises.
he couldnt sacrifice himself to doom another, to doom a man in service to a woman he hadn't met and owed no alleigance too. florian could not demand that of him, and thus could not give of it himself, much as he wanted to.
he was forced to live, and to see her die, and to know he'd failed.
naielle hasn't reached that crux yet. the mountains peak lies high above, and many descending tracks offer solutions from this vantage, though they may lead simply to deep ravines.
for her to give herself to her patron, to play the numbers game, she would save many. she would damn herself, damn her sister, damn her twin brother, her wife, her mother, her father. all the people she's met and known, ill and well, would be hurt. depending on the relationship, on the timing, she might even kill them.
but naielle would play the numbers game. its an easy game at that scale - a world, or an elf? she'd like both. but maybe her goal, to do good, necessitates giving up the opportunity to see that good done, and only to know it was.
after his betrayal, he heads north. he has loose ends to attend to. peoples lives to try and fix. a war to join. he expected to die in that war, as he expected to die in that manor, as he did in that forest, as he thought the griffin might, like the previous war had thought to.
he doesnt die. the war spits him out, like it had before.
and he stands on a rural farm, holding out tools for the farmer reparing the fence, and he wonders:
why did he always try to throw it away?

messy tldw on the current meta. this is just first thoughts and i havent reviewed vods yet so i cant go over the interactions in detail.
the base comp is sigma/ball, echo/tracer/ashe/sometimes mccree, zen/brig/mercy. orisa/sigma is also sometimes played but is only viable in limited situations
this comp is not dive so much as it is spam. the backline is too tanky to make diving useful, so it usually comes down to breaking sigma shield and forcing his cooldowns
theoretically a rush comp could mess with them, but after losing one fight it would be pretty easy to play around it (+ rein sucks). double shield has its moments on certain maps but losing one fight w/ it makes it hard to ever set back up and makes it hard to get value out of the dps that r strong rn
more in depth stuff under the cut
why ball/sigma is played
ball is the foundation of this comp. his speed, shield, disruption, and area denial w/ mines means he can literally spin circles around the other main tanks. winston has less of a capacity to survive cc than him and rein just is bad bc shatter sucks, limited mobility, he cant do anything when shielding, etc. orisa IS sometimes viable as a counter bc of fortify and supercharger, but she has no mobility and running anything but sigma with her is ineffective. hog/zarya doesnt work either but ill get to that later
its sorta a chicken or egg type thing but to me the rest of this comp is focused around denying the enemy ball value/capitalizing on your ball’s value. for this reason, sigma is the other tank paired with ball. his rock is a useful bit of cc, his shield can block burst and piledrive damage and destroy mines, and his grasp helps defend his supports from burst damage. his ultimate is also very good at isolating targets for a kill and also gives him high ground
none of the other main tanks are able to do everything that sigma does. winston can’t protect the backline and can’t poke at enemy shields, rein is bad, and orisa could protect her backline but this comp also focuses around shield break a lot so it’s easy to force her cooldowns and kill her
zarya isn’t played because she’s basically a free kill once her bubbles are used, she doesn’t have as much survivability as sigma does and she’s unable to do damage as she can’t get close enough to the other team’s backline to be effective. her ult is just worse flux specifically bc it doesnt give her high ground and it takes eons to charge. hog has good survivability, but can’t protect his backline during a push. hooking anything vs this comp would be very hard. his ult is comparatively shitty area control and he’s pretty helpless during it so he does fast. dva gets chewed up pretty fast by the dps and again this comp is very tanky so she can’t get much value out of dives. in terms of defending the backline, she’s just worse sigma. she might be playable on certain maps with lots of high ground, but i wouldn’t risk it.
the mobility + burst dmg of the dps mean that hog/zarya isn’t viable anymore bc they just get burst down so fast, and neither of their ults/abilities do much compared to ball/sigma bc the comp is so spread out. also neither of them are able to protect the supports at all
runaway tried zarya/sigma for like 2 minutes and it sucked because they dont really have a frontline in this case and neither can begin an engage vs a dive
why tracer/echo/ashe is played
what makes dps strong in this meta is their ability to counter and synergize with ball. dps have to be able to chase him down, deal enough damage to force him away, and have the mobility to quickly switch targets to the enemy backline as soon as the ball is forced back. they also can’t be dps that he can feasibly 1v1. in terms of synergy, ball’s disruption makes for quick picks on out of position heroes, which means you need a LOT of focused damage, speed, and (vertical) mobility. on those qualifiers, widow, reaper, hanzo, junkrat, and doom are out. sombra and reaper can’t easily get assassinations so theyre out as well. sym torb and mei output a lot of damage and counter ball, but have no mobility and generally don’t synergize well with ball. bastion is (imo) always debatably playable in some kinda weird bunker setup, but usually not worth the risk and only works on certain maps
out of the heroes we’re left with (ashe, echo, genji, mccree, pharah, s76, and tracer), echo ashe tracer and mccree emerge as just. better versions of the others. echo has great mobility and her beam is essential for dealing w/ ball and enemy shields. her ult also fucks. pharah is just a worse version of her and can’t get as much value. tracer has a lot of survivability and mobility, and her kit allows her to get quick picks by sheer spam and force ults. genji has mobility but can’t survive as well as tracer and you have to invest a lot more into making his ult get value. ashe outputs a lot of damage, charges her ult fast w/ dynamite, and also has vertical mobility with her coach gun. her ult is good for area control. mccree is more or less the same, but you trade mobility for cc and slightly more tankiness. s76 has none of those and just sucks
i’ve only seen the cree played in APAC a bit as a replacement for the tracer, i think to give more stability to the backline and to make it easier to handle the echo. that feels more like a playstyle thing than anything else.
the sigma pick is mostly a reaction to these dps. echo absolutely chews up tanks (minus sigma), and sigma can eat pulse and echo right click on top of having a shield + cc so hes kinda a must pick
tracer/echo is the most common duo, with tracer/ashe, ashe/echo, mccree/echo, and ashe/mccree being played on certain maps/by certain teams. NA/EU hasnt played anything with mccree so far. i dont have a complete handle on how they stack up yet but i think i like mccree/echo and tracer/echo best so far
you Could try to run a more divey dps duo i guess, but that’s more easily counterable than sticking with meta
why zen/brig/mercy is played
lucio and moira can’t be played because they have extremely limited range. dive is easily countered right now, so your backline isn’t going to have any easy escapes. zen is the most played support in this comp bc he does tons of damage to shields + discord is great for quick kills (havent made specific notes of it but itll be interesting to see where his harmony/discord usually go). trance is good for surviving flux + surviving spam in general. ana has more heals, but less value bc her nade is pretty easily blocked/eaten and bc nano is single target
brig + mercy are viable in different situations. brig is still sorta tanky + can defend against ball w/ cc and has rally as a backup while also doing pretty good heals. mercy is played on maps with good vertical mobility, usually alongside the ashe. balls have to play more carefully in that circumstance to not die. mercy also allows for echo to go hyper aggro, + valk is a good tempo ult. im not sure which i prefer, and id need to vod review to look at the interactions in detail
misc notes/interactions off the top of my head
echo and tracer end up chasing the ball off a lot and/or killing him, especially w/ beam. ball has to play REALLY careful in this comp and will still take a lot of damage regardless. ults charge fast
tracers duel each other sometimes, but i dont think ive seen many echo fights
echo beam also is good against sigma shield and uses her right click to force grasp so tracer can pulse (ive seen that like once but i think its happening more than that)
in this meta piledriving as ball into more than one target can be a death sentence. jihun did this a lot and was punished harshly for it, but his team also was always Right There when he did (kalios shielded right in front of him so he’d take less damage), but i think it just ended up burning more cooldowns than getting value
individual teams are centering different players, and running different dps/supports to do so. i don’t think there’s an optimal playstyle when it comes to revolving around different dps and that its based on player comfort. the one thing you absolutely should not do is make your ball the playmaker cough cough abang cough
if i have to see one more team pull out the genji i’m gonna scream

@baconplasm replied to your post “it’s still somewhat wild bc i kept just. wanting Percival while...”
maybe once vane reaches lvl 100 you can test him out again? with his 5* and rebalance he's become a pretty decent character. His 2nd skill at 100 changes to substitute for all party damage and removes hostility up. His first skill now heals himself too so he is less dependable on other charas to heal him back. Either way he makes a great backline too, but im just here to tell you he is way better now (and spread more vane propaganda)
pure vane propaganda dFJKLDJFLKJFd
i mean i do keep him in my backline because i want to test him out again when i need to, he remains the first one to come into the fight when my front line dies.  his subtitute will sure help a lot and yeah his first skill already help a lot more currently.
Currently my frontline team works too well togeher though (altair is key to my strategy, Aglovale is high damage + his cold cage buying time, and Lancelot dodging helps me until i can summon grimnir which gives me the shields for a few turn) so while Vane can help a lot with my current strategy where i focus on “evading attacks until i can summon shields in order to then hit with high damages” he doesnt fit the strategy yet -
while when ppl start falling, it means i need him to protect the one remaining even more than ever so he’s crucial to my backline strategy
and he’s still stressful to use for nOW DLKFJDLKF the other day i was doing a fight and i think it’s colo? Who covered everyone’s HP, while vane was in game, and i had already used his second skill and could use it again and i was sCARED so huh yeah
sticking to my strategy for now but DLFKJDFLK dw Vane remains important to it even if in the back dw

"The heart of every good performance" - Loads of Liverpool fans heap praise on unsung hero
Loads of Liverpool fans have been giving their verdict on Saturday’s comfortable 3-0 win, and there’s plenty of praise for the often-unheralded Georginio Wijnaldum.
After making his name for Newcastle as a goalscoring midfield who loved to drive into the box with Frank Lampard-esque timing, Wijnaldum’s transformation at Liverpool has been remarkable.
Jurgen Klopp has turned the Dutch international into one of the most well-rounded box-to-box midfielders in the world, a role which is perfectly suited to the composed, mature and ridiculously athletic 28 year-old.
Roberto Firmino has thrown a party themed around the colour of his teeth! Watch the video below to find out what we’re talking about…
Perhaps the one mark against his overall game is a lack of goals – he had scored just once in the league before Saturday – but it was him who put the game to bed with a delightful goal.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring with a header, but Wijnaldum stole the show when he latched onto an Andy Robertson pass, controlled the ball beautifully with his first touch and then gently lobbed it over the helpless Artur Boruc.
The all-action midfielder, who Klopp claimswas badly ill before the match, completed 91 per cent of his passes, made three key passes and one tackle, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…
Can anyone explain to me how Gini became this important? I mean I’ve always liked him but christ I think he makes us tick. #LFC

Close second to VVD for player of the season for me. Wrap him up in cotton wool please Jurgen
— Little Miss K Aden (@KadraAden) February 9, 2019
He was a monster today easily MOM
— David Agnew (@Liverpool1981) February 9, 2019
He is probably the best midfielder I have ever seen at using his body to protect the ball and retain possession
— Manpreet Dhadwal (@ManpreetDhadwal) February 9, 2019
He’s developed better chemistry with the backline and front three than any of our other mid players. Fab more of a defensive long ball player, Keita still settling, Shaq more offensively minded. Gini is the perfect box to box compliment for the team.
— ADIL LAK (@ADIL_LAK) February 9, 2019
This season mate, he’s been immense and Fab plays so much better with Gini in the side.
— Ryan Huggins (@r8hugs) February 9, 2019
I love him so much. Does the right thing with the ball all the time
— Paul Milligan (@mrpaulmilligan) February 9, 2019
doesnt rush it, plays it simple. such phenomenal ball control & protection. clever movement. and an absolute relentless warrior. plays w his head.
— Sean Garvey (@seangarvey86) February 9, 2019
Had a great season so far. A few more goals wouldn’t go amiss, but he is at the heart of every good performance

Bradley Wright-Phillips’ brand-new evidence; and Frank Lampard hems into relevance
Plus: the Rapids triumphing move dissolves hurriedly; Torontos better is back to his best; and Jason Kreiss triumphant return
A record-setting darknes started in atypical pattern for Bradley Wright-Phillips.
The Red Bulls striker expended most of the parallel in solitude, unable to get a clear touch in a dangerous situate, thanks in part to a choking Chicago Fire defense. But as has been the case since he joined the team in 2013, a bit of room was all he needed to show his form.
And on Sunday, it served to break records.
Wright-Phillips extra-time equalizer was his 63 rd as a Red Bull player, putting him past Juan Pablo Angel as the all-time dealership destination scoring leader.
Of course, I wont lie I like to break records, right holders of MLSs single-season goal scoring record said after the competitor. I try not to think about it, but when you say these kind of things, it obligates me proud.
A streaky striker by nature, Wright-Phillips has once again were beginning to warm up, scoring three goals in his last two pairs, break-dance the double digit goalscoring threshold for the third season in a row. But regardless of Sundays record, it is the nature of his latest point that has Red Bulls boss Jesse Marsch excited.
Ive been defying him to see more gamblings belatedly in video games. They did a good job of being hard on him. Every team we play knows Bradley is important. They focus in on him and Sacha, and Brad still manages to find ways to get objectives, Marsch said.
As good as Brad is, we are trying to encourage him to have a cut-throat attitude, that even if he doesnt have a lot of contacts in the game, he exactly necessity one to make a difference.
On Sunday, thats all it took for the Red Bulls to salvage a time from near cataclysm in the unfriendly confines of Toyota Park. I set a lot of work into what I do, Wright-Phillips said. And when you can make an accomplishment like that, it makes me happy and proud.
Welcome back to Major League Soccer, Jason Kreis
The two-time MLS Cup win and former NYC FC boss rejoined the challenger after a short incantation away from video games. His honor? A 3-1 succes in Orlando against the New England Revolution.
In some modes, Kreis astounded with his approach to the equal. In others, “hes having” stayed the same. The trademark of a Kreis side the diamond midfield was shunned for the conventional 4-2-3-1 that Orlando has employed for most of the season. His decision to start Antonio Nocerino and Servando Carrasco over Darwin Ceren and Cristian Higuita was surprising, as was his choice to start Brek Shea on the bench. All starting decisions, he said, were based on word in training.
But most of his lineup decisions followed recent precedent. The back four remained intact. Molino, who has lined up across every midfield place during Orlandos recent gauntlet of fixture congestion, noticed a residence on the left. Kaka reverted centrally behind Larin, with Hadji Barry making his third consecutive start of its first year on the right.
New England searched poised to participate spoiler, putting in an superb superhighway exertion through the opening 45 minutes. Kei Kamara “re opening the” scoring, waltzing his road past the Orlando defense and detecting the net simply 18 instants in.
But Orlando saw their formation in the second half. It took Larin less than a minute to score, hitting Bobby Shuttleworth at the far pole with a calm finish. Second half sub Shea communicated in a cross in the 63 rd, spotting Kevin Molino to redouble the make. Molino capped off the darknes with a brace.
But the nighttime belonged to Jason Kreis, who managed to reignite a sleepy Orlando side to their first win since June 26 th.
Obviously[ Im] very, very happy, Kreis said after the competition. I visualize the week of handiwork that the players and staff have put in was excellent. One of best available weeks Ive ever been involved with. To see that work terminate in a really strong execution realizes me extremely happy.
Frank Lampard hems into relevant for NYC FC
Frank Lampard is the worst Designated Player sign in Major League Soccer biography: that was the narrative six short a few weeks ago. And with good reason. After all, his sketchy stay with New York City FC has been tainted by false starts, contractual distraction, fitness issues and questionable hurt concerns.
But his action on Saturday against the Colorado Rapids introduced an exclaiming differentiate on one of the most remarkable comeback stories of the MLS season.
Since reverting from a calf trauma, Lampard has been on fire. Donning the chieftains armband in place of the suspended David Villa, the Chelsea great revived his past form, scoring the first hat-trick in NYC FC history en route to a 5-1 win over the Colorado Rapids.
This was no small feat for Lampard or NYC FC. The Rapid were undefeated in 15 competitors foreman into Saturdays encounter an enormous achievement within the frameworks of the parity-laden MLS. Their protection allowed a paltry 14 purposes through 20 pairs leader into the weekend, the best preserve in the conference. Eight of their first 20 parallels ended in shutouts. Likewise , no squad has been able to score three against the Rapids backline all season long with or without Tim Howard.
And no single musician has tallied more than two aims against them, either. Until Lampard broke the working party. The Englishman, who has been the top scorer in MLS since his revert as a starter on 18 June, opened the scoring in what was initially a drab affair.
Lightning immediately introduced a pause to the match, but NYC FC accompanied batch of electricity on the restart. A second wayward foul from Michael Azira applied the Rapids down a human in the 37 th time. With Colorado reeling, Tony Taylor redoubled the pas before the half, and Steven Mendoza constructed it three shortly after the second. But “its been” Lampard who induced an unforgettable curtain call. First he curled a shot past Howard and then completed his hat-trick with fines and penalties. He is now among the top-1 0 goalscorers in the league.
Not bad for a presumed has-been, right?
He showed true-blue leadership today, team-mate Jack Harrison said. He was a true-life skipper at Chelsea and he proved it today. He substantiated everyone incorrect is demonstrating that we do need him and hes a key part of our success.
An abrupt death to a good thing
The Colorado Rapids forgot ugly against NYC FC – and that is putting it mildly.
We shot ourselves in the foot, said Howard. Its a small tar, its easy to get around, easy to defend properly and we didnt do that as a group today. Once the red-faced placard happened, the game was finished.
Despite the result, the Rapids should still be proud of what they have accomplished this season. After all, they continue to second in the West with one of the stingiest defenses in the league.
Now makes thrown their achievements in situation. Compare the teams current success to their woes in 2015. They have already overshadowed their win total last year with 10 wins in 2016 compared to nine in 2015. Their defense is actually comparable this year: in 2015 they allowed exactly 22 points through 21 coincides as opposed to their current 19 permitted. Their offensive wasnt all that different either, with the 2016 Rapids tallying 24 aims, compared to the 19 through 21 tallied last-place season.
So whats certain differences? For starters, Colorado are tallying first and accommodating on to wins a determining factor for any contender. Last-place season, they managed to tally first in eight of their opening 21 competitors. That was key to their momentary success on the year( 4-1-3 ). This year, it has been the bedrock of all the teams success, with the Rapids running a solid 10 -0- 3 when find that first point. Only NYC FC have opened the tallying more frequently( 14 of 21 matches ).
The team have also learned how to use dwelling domain to their advantage, running undefeated at DSG Park (8 -0- 3 ). That wasnt the instance last-place season as Colorado disappeared 3-4-4 in the same time frame.
Jermaine Jones has certainly been a part of their success. The squad is undefeated when the midfielder starts( 4-0-3 ). But Pablo Mastroeni has been a key catalyst as well. Continuity and identity is already foreign terms for the Rapids under Mastroeni. Now, key offseason acquisitions have bolstered the fraternity, and Mastroeni has effectively molded his high press arrangement to his players persuasiveness, may be required for his young roster to victimize antagonists on turnovers in the attacking third.
The result has been unfettered success and no single loss can take that away from them.
Torontos best is back to his best
No team in Major League Soccer travel their fates on the back of a single musician quite like Toronto FC and their golden goose, Sebastian Giovinco.
On Sunday evening, the Italian striker acquired the maestro label from countryman Andrea Pirlo, orchestrating and executing on each of Torontos destinations in a 3-0 shutout of the Columbus Crew.
It took all of eight minutes for him to show his form. A long-range blare ricocheted off the back of team-mate Tsubasa Endoh, vanquishing Crew keeper Steve Clark for the early precede. Endoh was credited for the goal – but Giovinco established it happen.
Just 16 a few minutes later, the Toronto offense inaugurated weaving their route through the Crew defense, finishing on a relinquish and depart between Jay Chapman and Giovinco. The former Juventus star took a curling kill on the outside of his foot to double Torontos advantage.
And he wasnt done there. Giovinco thrust Steve Clark into a diving save in the 55 th time. One instant eventually, a hazardous assaulting string assured Giovinco smack the same post not once, but twice, just missing on his possibility for a strengthen. Unable to find two seconds objective, the Italian striker reverted back to the role of distributor, this time connecting with Jozy Altidore for the end goal of the match.
His 12 th goal of the season introduces him merely one behind tournament lead David Villa. His two expedites on the night wreaking his season total to nine as well, tying him for second league wide. Those stats are all the more impressive when you weigh his nine-match scoreless shortage.
Weve said it before and we will say it again: the success of Toronto follows the success of Giovinco. Toronto are 5-1-2 when Giovinco scores. When he doesnt? An humiliating 3-6-4. Its recent, highly circulated nine-match tallying drought resulted in a paltry 2-3-4 evidence for the believed playoff hopefuls. With last weeks hat-trick and the coming week creation, the team have now strung together two prevails for the first time since April, putting them four degrees clear of the crimson line.
The Seattle Sounders can tell you the dangers of relying on a single outstanding representation to move the societies lucks. Two thirds of the channel into this season, and they are still trying to find a solution for the loss of Obafemi Martins.
Toronto may find themselves in a similar discern. But for now, Giovincos brilliance continues to mercy the Great White North and they will follow his contribute, for better or for worse.

Toronto may find themselves in a same blot. But for now, Giovincos brilliance continues to grace the Great White North and they will follow his lead, for better or for worse.

Bradley Wright-Phillips’ new account; and Frank Lampard hems into relevance
Plus: the Rapids triumphing operate terminates unexpectedly; Torontos good is back to his best; and Jason Kreiss triumphant return
A record-setting darknes started in atypical pattern for Bradley Wright-Phillips.
The Red Bulls striker invested most of the equal in emptines, unable to get a clear stroke in a hazardous caste, thanks in part to a suffocate Chicago Fire defense. But as has been the case since he assembled the team in 2013, a little bit of space was all he needed to show his form.
And on Sunday, it served to break records.
Wright-Phillips extra-time equalizer was his 63 rd as a Red Bull player, putting him past Juan Pablo Angel as the all-time franchise purpose scoring leader.
Of course, I wont lie I like to break records, right holders of MLSs single-season goal scoring record said after the equal. I try not to think about it, but when you say these kind of things, it makes me proud.
A streaky striker by nature, Wright-Phillips has once again begun to warm up, tallying three goals in his last two competitions, violating the double digit goalscoring threshold for the third largest season in a row. But regardless of Sundays record, it is the nature of his latest aim that has Red Bulls boss Jesse Marsch excited.
Ive been defying him to draw more performances belatedly in video games. They did a good job of being hard on him. Every team we play knows Bradley is important. They focus in on him and Sacha, and Brad still manages to find ways to get goals, Marsch said.
As good as Brad is, we are trying to encourage him to have a cut-throat attitude, that even if he doesnt have a lot of suggestions in video games, he simply needs one to make a difference.
On Sunday, thats all it took for the Red Bulls to salvage a degree from near cataclysm in the unfriendly confines of Toyota Park. I made a lot of work into what I do, Wright-Phillips said. And when they are able to make an accomplishment like that, it builds me glad and proud.
Welcome back to Major League Soccer, Jason Kreis
The two-time MLS Cup win and former NYC FC boss rejoined the tournament after a short sorcery away from video games. His wage? A 3-1 succes in Orlando against the New England Revolution.
In some lanes, Kreis astonished with his approach to the match. In others, “hes having” stayed the same. The hallmark of a Kreis side the diamond midfield was shunned for the conventional 4-2-3-1 that Orlando has employed for most of the season. His decision to start Antonio Nocerino and Servando Carrasco over Darwin Ceren and Cristian Higuita was surprising, as was his alternative to start Brek Shea on the bench. All starting decisions, he said, were based on formation in training.
But most of his lineup decisions followed recent precedent. The back four remained intact. Molino, who has lined up across every midfield statu during Orlandos recent gauntlet of fixture congestion, detected a home on the left. Kaka rendered centrally behind Larin, with Hadji Barry giving his third consecutive commencing from the year on the right.
New England searched poised to play-act spoiler, putting in an excellent road effort through the opening 45 minutes. Kei Kamara opened the scoring, waltzing his method past the Orlando defense and learning the net exactly 18 instants in.
But Orlando saw their model in the second largest half. It took Larin less than a instant to score, drumming Bobby Shuttleworth at the far berth with a calm finish. Second half sub Shea transmitted in a cross in the 63 rd, observing Kevin Molino to double the make. Molino capped off the nighttime with a brace.
But the darknes belonged to Jason Kreis, who managed to reignite a sleepy Orlando side to their firstly succes since June 26 th.
Obviously[ Im] extremely, very happy, Kreis said after the pair. I ponder the week of toil that the players and staff have put in was excellent. One of the best weeks Ive ever been involved with. To see that work terminate in a really strong accomplishment reaches me extremely happy.
Frank Lampard margins into relevance for NYC FC
Frank Lampard is the worst Designated Player signal in Major League Soccer record: that was the narrative six short weeks ago. And with good reason. After all, his sketchy stay with New York City FC has been defaced by false-hearted starts, contractual fluster, fitness matters and questionable harm concerns.
But his recital on Saturday against the Colorado Rapids introduced an exclaiming symbol on one of the most remarkable comeback floors of the MLS season.
Since rendering from a calf hurt, Lampard has been on fire. Donning the captains armband in place of the suspended David Villa, the Chelsea great rekindled his past species, tallying the first hat-trick in NYC FC history en route to a 5-1 win over the Colorado Rapids.
This was no small feat for Lampard or NYC FC. The Rapid were undefeated in 15 accords pate into Saturdays encounter an enormous achievement within the frameworks of the parity-laden MLS. Their protection granted a paltry 14 aims through 20 matches leader into the weekend, the best evidence in the conference. Eight of their first 20 coincides was concluded in shutouts. Likewise , no crew has been able to score three against the Rapids backline all season long with or without Tim Howard.
And no single musician has scored more than two goals against them, either. Until Lampard devastated the working party. The Englishman, who has been the top scorer in MLS since his yield as a starter on 18 June, “re opening the” scoring in what was initially a drab liaison.
Lightning immediately put a pause to the equal, but NYC FC accompanied abundance of energy on the restart. A second wayward fumble from Michael Azira threw the Rapids down a person in the 37 th minute. With Colorado reeling, Tony Taylor redoubled the extend before the half, and Steven Mendoza saw it three shortly after the second. But “its been” Lampard who induced an memorable curtain call. First he curled a shot past Howard and then completed his hat-trick with fines and penalties. He is now among the top-1 0 goalscorers in the league.
Not bad for a guessed has-been, right?
He demo true-blue leadership today, team-mate Jack Harrison said. He was a true captain at Chelsea and he demonstrated it today. He supported everyone incorrect showing that we do need him and hes a key part of our success.
An abrupt resolve to a good thing
The Colorado Rapids forgot ugly against NYC FC – and that is putting it mildly.
We shot ourselves in the hoof, said Howard. Its a small tone, its easy to get around, easy to defend properly and we didnt do that as a group today. Once the red-faced poster happened, the game was finished.
Despite the result, the Rapids should still be proud of what they have accomplished this season. After all, they continue to second in the West with one of the stingiest securities in the league.
Now tells placed their achievements in context. Compare the teams current success to their woes in 2015. They have already overshadowed their win total last year with 10 wins in 2016 compared to nine in 2015. Their defense is actually comparable this year: in 2015 they allowed merely 22 aims through 21 competitors as opposed to their current 19 tolerated. Their offensive wasnt all that different either, with the 2016 Rapids tallying 24 purposes, compared to the 19 through 21 scored last season.
So whats the difference? For starters, Colorado are scoring first and regarding on to acquires a key factor for any hopeful. Last-place season, they managed to tally first in eight of their opening 21 accords. That was key to their fleeting success on the year( 4-1-3 ). This time, it has been the bedrock of all the teams success, with the Rapids becoming a solid 10 -0- 3 when feeling that first destination. Merely NYC FC have opened the tallying more frequently( 14 of 21 accords ).
The team have also learned how to use residence battleground to their advantage, exiting undefeated at DSG Park (8 -0- 3 ). That wasnt the action last-place season as Colorado extended 3-4-4 in the same time frame.
Jermaine Jones must really been a part of their success. The team is undefeated when the midfielder starts( 4-0-3 ). But Pablo Mastroeni has been a key catalyst as well. Continuity and identity is already foreign words for the Rapids under Mastroeni. Now, key offseason acquisitions have bolstered the golf-club, and Mastroeni has effectively molded his high press method to his actors strengths, may be required for his young roster to cheat resists on turnovers in the attacking third.
The result has been unfettered success and no single loss can take that away from them.
Torontos best is back to his best
No team in Major League Soccer razz their fates on the back of a single musician fairly like Toronto FC and their golden goose, Sebastian Giovinco.
On Sunday evening, the Italian striker borrowed the maestro tag from countryman Andrea Pirlo, orchestrating and executing on each of Torontos purposes in a 3-0 shutout of the Columbus Crew.
It took all of eight times for him to show his form. A long-range bomb ricocheted off the back of team-mate Tsubasa Endoh, pulsating Crew keeper Steve Clark for the early extend. Endoh was credited for the goals and targets – but Giovinco stirred it happen.
Just 16 a few minutes later, the Toronto offense began weaving their road through the Crew defense, terminating on a hand and proceed between Jay Chapman and Giovinco. The former Juventus star took a curling fire on the outside of his hoof to double Torontos advantage.
And he wasnt done there. Giovinco forced Steve Clark into a diving save in the 55 th hour. One instant subsequently, a dangerous criticizing string watched Giovinco smack the same post not formerly, but twice, scarcely missing on his chance for a fortify. Unable to find two seconds purpose, the Italian striker reverted back to the role of distributor, this time connecting with Jozy Altidore for the final goal of the match.
His 12 th goal of the season sets him exactly one behind conference leader David Villa. His two facilitates on the night delivering his season total to nine as well, tying him for second tournament broad. Those stats are all the most impressive when you conceive his nine-match scoreless shortage.
Weve said it before and we will say it again: the success of Toronto follows the success of Giovinco. Toronto are 5-1-2 when Giovinco tallies. When he doesnt? An humiliating 3-6-4. His most recent, highly publicized nine-match tallying drought resulted in a paltry 2-3-4 record for the expected playoff challengers. With last weeks hat-trick and this weeks yield, the team have already been strung together two triumphs for the first time since April, putting them four items clear of the ruby-red line.
The Seattle Sounders can tell you the dangers of relying on a single outstanding chassis to move the squads fortunes. Two thirds of the channel into this season, and they are still trying to find a solution for the loss of Obafemi Martins.
Toronto may find themselves in a same blot. But for now, Giovincos brilliance continues to grace the Great White North and they will follow his lead, for better or for worse.
