It may be obvious from my recent posts, but I think a great and underused trope is our protagonists finding some powerful artifact in the ruins of an ancient civilization.

They use it to lay waste to their enemies a couple times, but then later they finish translating the writings from those ruins and it's, "This is a powerful artifact that we found in the ruins of some ancient civilization. Our rulers plan to use it against our enemies but maybe we shouldn't?" Just multiple sequential apocalypse macguffin.

Tbh instead of yet another continuation/nostalgiabait production like X-Men 97, it would have been cool to finally get a New Mutants animated series. The movie sucked and it would be difficult to tie-in the end of the Brood saga with Xavier being space-pregnant with the alien, but it's a nice chance to start relatively fresh.

Since it's Indie Animation Day...

I figured I'd repost that list of other animation creators on YouTube that I shared last week, separate from it's original, weird context. I've also included several more entries based on suggestions in the comments. Thanks for the feedback! Also, this is not a list of moral endorsements. I know some of these creators personally, but many of them I do not. You know a lot about the cultural influences behind various aspects of D&D, so: do you know the origins of the thing in 3.5 where it seems like a main way they want you to play as a psionic warrior is to grow massive claws and get breath weapons? It's so specific and out of left field for a "warrior who uses the power of the mind" that I've always wondered.

Much of 3E's handling of psionics closely follows material presented in the 2E supplement The Complete Psionics Handbook, which, contra later editions' habit of treating psionics as a variant of wizardly magic, presents psionics as a totally separate and mutually incompatible thing. One feature of this treatment is psionics having its own distinct set of "schools", or disciplines: clairsentience, psychokinesis, psychometabolism, psychoportation, telepathy, and metapsionics.

The 3E psionic warrior stuff is a more or less direct port of the discipline of psychometabolism; I can only presume that this is because it's the most "fightery" of the Psionics Handbook disciplines, though I can't back that guess up. Apart from your cited examples, other psychometabolic powers presented here include self-healing; energy absorption; turning into animals, objects, or living shadows; wuxia-style "lightfoot" techniques; camouflage; shrinking or expanding; stretching one's limbs Mister Fantastic style; and others.

Of course, that just kicks the can further down the road: if the 3E psionic warrior is a port of 2E's psychometabolism specialist, where the heck did 2E get the idea for the discipline of psychometabolism? The general idea of shape-shifting and fire-breathing and such being psychic powers that can be cultivated through mental discipline pops up in quite a few places, but we're looking for a specific constellation of tropes, not isolated instances of little bits and pieces of it.

The Complete Psionics Handbook helpfully includes a comprehensive bibliography of its inspirations (remember when Dungeons & Dragons used to have those?), though I'm unacquainted with most of the books it cites, so that's where my ability to help in this respect ends. I'll include a copy of that bibliography under the cut, though – maybe one of this blog's followers can point out which of its entries, if any, might be most directly informative.

Danny and Dex-Starr saga

Dex-Starr eyes the glowing ecto-snack, his glowing red aura flickering with hesitation. After a long, tense pause, the angry cat cautiously snatches the snack with one paw and inspects it.

Dex-Starr: [Grumbles, sniffing] “This better not be poisoned, ghost-boy.”

Danny: [Scoffs] “Seriously? Like I’m gonna waste good ectoplasm on poisoning a space cat. That stuff’s hard to make!”

Dex-Starr takes a tentative bite, his furious expression softening for a moment as the snack melts into a satisfying glow in his mouth.

Dex-Starr: [Mumbles through chewing] “…It’s not bad.”

Danny: [Smirking] “See? Told ya. You’re less scary when you’re not hangry.”

Dex-Starr glares at Danny, but the intensity has dulled into something more akin to annoyance than murderous rage. He floats closer, his red aura dimming slightly.

Dex-Starr: “So what’s your deal, anyway? You don’t smell like the rest of these humans.”

Danny: [Floating backward slightly] “Uh, thanks? I’m kinda… half-dead, I guess. Half-human, half-ghost. It’s complicated.”

Dex-Starr: [Narrowing his eyes] “Half-ghost? That explains the weird energy.”

Danny: [Shrugs] “Yeah, it’s a whole thing. But I’m still technically alive, so... anyway, why’re you so mad at everyone? Space cats don’t usually hang out in sewer systems plotting doom, right?”

Dex-Starr’s plasma flickers again, and his posture stiffens. He looks away, his growl returning faintly.

Dex-Starr: [Quietly] “Humans killed my human. The only one who ever cared about me. They hurt her… and they took her from me. Now all I have is rage.”

Danny’s casual demeanor falters as he processes Dex-Starr’s words. His own memories of losing loved ones flash in his mind—the times he felt powerless to protect them.

Danny: [Softer] “…I’m sorry. That sucks. A lot.”

Dex-Starr: [Snapping back] “I don’t need your pity!”

Danny: *“It’s not pity. It’s just… I get it. I lost people too. Felt like the world was out to get me for a while. But staying mad forever doesn’t fix anything. Trust me, I tried.”

Dex-Starr hesitates, his claws retracting slightly. The flicker of anger in his eyes doesn’t disappear, but there’s a hint of something else—doubt, or maybe curiosity.

Dex-Starr: “…And what fixed it for you?”

Danny: [Grinning awkwardly] “Uh, I mean, I’m still figuring that out. But helping people, even when it sucks, kind of makes it suck less? Plus, I’ve got a ghost dog who keeps me company. That helps too.”

Dex-Starr tilts his head slightly, his red aura dimming further.

Dex-Starr: “A ghost dog?”

Danny: “Yeah, big guy named Cujo. He’s kinda like me—half-alive, half-ghost, 100% lovable.”

Dex-Starr: [Grumbles] “Hmph. Sounds ridiculous.”

Danny: [Floating upright] “It totally is. But hey, if you’re ever tired of being mad all the time, you could come hang out with me and Cujo. I bet he’d like you, even if you are a walking rage ball.”

Dex-Starr stares at Danny for a long moment, his tail twitching. Then, with a huff, he turns and starts to float away.

Dex-Starr: “Don’t count on it, ghost-boy. But… I’ll think about it.”

Danny watches the glowing red light disappear into the sewer tunnels, a small smile tugging at his lips.

Danny: [To himself] “Progress. Angry space cat progress.”

Hello hello!! I just wanna start off by saying how GORGEOUS your art is! Truly inspiring. I was wondering what your process was? Again, your art is truly impressive

Thank you!! Oh man, it was a saga and you've opened a can of worms because my favorite thing to ramble about outside of sad gay space robots is our unholy overlord Photoshop (warning for length)

Hatching workflow: step 1: have too many Doré artbooks The refined process is thumbnail > cleaner sketch > black-and-white base OR 3D render > cut out whites > clean up edges > mask out each building/section > hatching lines with the upcoming layer setup

Below is the layer setup I use for hatching! First I separated each element into its own folder, with its own mask—

Then used this structure in each folder— I just want the hatching lines to appear black when on lit areas, and white on shadowed areas (as opposed to having to draw part of a line in white and another part in black). So, after separating the lit and shadowed sides, I copied the "Light" layer, clipped it on top of a folder of hatching lines, and inverted its layer mask.

(*I draw on layer masks because it's easier to recolor lines + toggle between drawing and erasing with the "X" shortcut (I have fore- and background colors set to black and white for layer masks))

Sometimes I do a pass of grayscale values and overlay that layer on top as a reference while hatching.

I've two main brushes: one choppier and one smoother and tapered at the ends (for thin lines, 2px-3px). Really thin horiz/vert lines are just the Pencil at 1px.

Tbh at first I only intended to make that one lurking Drift illustration. But I cower from 3D like it’ll kill me, so I turned it into a 3D assignment. First I used that "separate ways" piece to make myself model at low stakes (I just made items from the comic backgrounds and jammed them together), then I modeled the Dead End wide shot and got the final lurking Drift comp from that.

1. Drew enough detail to model (>see the 5th image in this post)

2. Used fSpy to generate a Blender camera that matched my perspective

3. Shoved together the barest essentials of the clinic set in Blender (setting the 5th image in this post as a background image in Viewport)

4. Rendered at hi-res twice: once with lighting, once with Freestyle outlines.

5. Changed clinic design in the close-up, so I went back to revise the wide shot.

In conclusion, my hobby is wrangling Photoshop to minutely speed up the extremely tedious and niche thing I can't stop myself from doing If anyone's got a faster way to do any of this, tell me!!

Okay, still on the Christopher is what makes buddie and the way that no other love interest will ever stand a chance because they would need to make Buck step out on Chris for it to work and that's unforgivable saga (read more here). If you've been here long enough, you know I refuse to believe they accidentally set up buddie, but while talking to @the-tomorrow-road, she actually gave a reasonable explanation based on the circumstances surrounding the way Maddie and Eddie were introduced. We know that Eddie was written for Ryan and he was supposed to be in one episode and then they liked him so much he ended up getting the full season and we know Maddie and Eddie were supposed to be a thing initially until Jen decided that Maddie should be with Chim. Making a lot of assumptions, if they had the intention of making Eddie a love interest for the dispatcher, there are stuff that were added to Eddie's character planning that give him a love interest introduction that they probably didn't bother changing once madney became the way to expand Maddie's relationship with the firehouse. One of the things here is making Eddie a single parent of a kid with special needs who needs help, which also conveniently gives them a way to keep Carla a side character. But since they never pulled the trigger of Eddie meeting someone through Buck, he ends up being a love interest for Buck purely by accident. Since Buck is no longer a bridge for connection, the connection happens with Buck. And obviously, the chemistry between Ryan and Oliver helped a lot.

But it all goes back to Eddie and how they created and established Eddie. Audiences don't like imperfect mothers and Eddie was always written as a widower archetype. Buck is not necessary for Christopher if Shannon is in the picture, so much so that the show gives Buck Ali when Shannon comes back (and break them up as soon as Shannon dies), but at no point Shannon had real chances because abandoning Chris for 2 years is unforgivable, death is the only way out for her in the narrative. And to have Eddie allow Buck to help him in ways he's not allowing Shannon, creates that expectation for Buck to be involved with Christopher that they fully solidify during the beginning of season 3. Even though they have been showing that contrast since s2, with the way Eddie is hiding Shannon from Chris just to take Buck with them on a family outing and having a total stranger assume they are a family. Since Eddie was written into a space that was created with Buck's love interest being gone, they kinda slipped Eddie into that space because of the circumstances even though probably that wasn't their intention. It was just a combination of chemistry and the fact that Eddie ends up interacting with Buck more because Chim has Hen and Maddie, and Hen has Chim and Karen, and Bobby has Athena.

And I will be honest, I keep trying to find an equivalent situation to see the difference on how they are handled, but media doesn't really do single fathers with unredeemable mothers that allow for a third person to step up as a parent the way Buck did (and in a single mother with an unredeemable father situation, it is always obvious that the best friend turned co-parent is a love interest). Sure, they only fully commit to it once Shannon is dead, but Buck inserting himself into Eddie problems as a way to establish Eddie's problems, makes it so Buck is part of the solution in a very permanent way. Even more considering they fully leaned into it as the seasons went on. Christopher being part of the equation when he has a mother who abandoned him puts Buck in a space where he can't leave Chris and it also puts Eddie in a space where he can't deny Chris a relationship with Buck. So you can't separate the two of them in the way they need to make other love interests work. The way they handled the Chris of it all is what forced them into a space where there's just no way to make other relationships work. Because they would be forced into a situation where they need to get Buck out of Eddie's will and then make Buck step out on Chris. And they put too much into making buddie partners to fully commit to splitting them up.

Your legs stop shaking, and your shoulders pause in their trembling before continuing. Eurylochus can feel it resume under his hands, and realizes that you’re cold; he can hear your teeth chattering and feel the icy touch of your skin. He unbuttoned his cloak, wrapping it around your shoulders. He is freezing now, yes, but at least you’re not.

You can feel your own mental health return to its normal state as the screams fade.

Turning to give Eurylochus a small smile of gratitude, you walk up to your captain. He’s directing a landing to the shore, and you follow his gaze to a spire of rock jutting out in front of the ship. You squint, and for a second you believe you have caught a glimpse of a young man, staring at the anchoring boat. Then he’s gone.

“That was him, wasn’t it.” It’s more of a statement than a question. 

“Yes,” Odysseus responds. He finally looks over to meet your eyes. 

“Feeling better?” He asks.

You nod, a small smile playing on your lips, only a faint glimmer of happiness before you turn serious. “I’m sorry about your mother,” you whisper.

Odysseus pretends to miss your question. “It’s good that your mind has repaired quickly. I need you to come with me to speak to this… prophet.”

You have learned to stop gaping when Odysseus asks you to go on missions with him. Instead, you give him another nod. “Of course, captain.”

Eurylochus lowers a plank down to shore, gesturing for you and Odysseus to come over.

Polites joins you, a slight bounce in his step. You smile warmly at your friend, remembering how he had helped you during your mental breakdown. Polites tries to return it, grin faltering a little as he observes the cloak draped over your figure- Eurylochus’s cloak. The vile Aphrodite had given him feels heavy in his pocket. 

“Good luck,” Eurylochus says, pulling you into a hug from behind. 

You pat his forearm. “My luck’s not running out anytime soon,” you tease, completely missing the look of pure hatred Polites sends Eurylochus. 

“Y/N!” Odysseus calls, stepping foot on the shore. He turns, eyebrow slightly raised as he takes in Polites pouting figure and Eurylochus’s arms wrapped around you. “Looks like everyone comes to wish you off, and not their own captain!” 

You blush furiously, squirming out of Eurylochus’s grasp. 

“Wasn’t my idea,” you pant when you reach the space beside your captain.

Odysseus dismisses your comment. “It’s fine. I was just teasing.”

You turn your attention back to the spire of rock ahead of you. 

Odysseus notices you tensing. “Are you… fine to go with me? I can go get someone else…”

You force a smile, walking ahead to the path that would eventually lead to the top of the rock. “Me? Pft, I’m always up for a little jog to talk to a person who’ll reveal my doom!”

Odysseus chuckled, following you as you disappeared around the bend.

You look out at the scene laid out before you. 

The prophet has his back turned to you, but he turns as he hears your approach. His eyes are covered in cloth- old bandages, you assume. You get the odd impression that under those bandages, his eyes are glowing. 

You feel Odysseus emerge behind you, and instantly the prophet’s attention snaps to the captain. You try not to get annoyed by this.

“I am the prophet.” His voice is surprisingly smooth for a dead person. “With the answers you seek.”

He gestures widely, keeping the monotone as he speaks, “time, I’ve unlocked it. I see past and future running free.” Above his head, two hologram-like images chased each other around his head. The past- a dog- chasing the future- a cat. 

“There is a world, where I help you get home.” You’re intrigued by this. What could he mean- ‘a world’? Were there multiple. “But that’s not a world I know.”

You furrow your brow. “What?” You and Odysseus demand in unison.

The prophet ignores your question, pointing just over your head. “I see a song of past romance.” 

You turn, startled by seeing Penelope’s form watching over Odysseus. “Ody-” 

You’re interrupted by the prophet, who motions to a spot next to you. You cover your mouth with one hand as you see Polites, Eurylochus, and Hermes locked in a fight. “I see the sacrifice of man.”

“I see portrayals of betrayals and a brother’s final stand.” The images dissolve as you reach for them. “I see you on the brink of death. I see you draw your final breath. I see a man who gets to make it home alive.” 

The prophet indicates to Odysseus, who’s eyes widen at his words: “But it’s no longer you.”

You feel rage boiling inside of you. Your captain seems speechless, so you decide to take it from here. 

“This can’t be,” you said. “We’ve suffered and sailed through the toughest of hells, now you tell us our effort’s for nothing?” 

The prophet promptly ignores you, attention trained on Odysseus. “I see your palace, covered in red. Faces of men who had long believed you're dead.”

Another image of Penelope, and you feel your heart ache for her. The queen’s husband is missing, probably a long line of insufferable suitors with dirty minds. “I see your wife with a man who is haunting, a man with a trail of bodies.”

This ticks you off. “Who?” You screech, grabbing the hem of the prophet’s tunic and holding it in your iron-clad grip. You’re pretty sure that they can hear you all the way from the ship.

Yet the prophet doesn’t flinch, instead backing you, step by step, toward the edge of the plateau. “I see a song of past romance. I see the sacrifice of man. I see portrayals of betrayal and a brother’s final stand.” 

“I see you on the brink of death.” This was pretty ironic since you were one step away from falling off of the spire. “I see you draw your final breath.” 

You gasp, arms flailing as you begin to fall. This seems to snap Odysseus out of his daze. 

“Y/N!” He cries, lunging forward to grab your hand.

“I see a man who gets to make it home alive,” the prophet continues. Odysseus’s main focus is keeping you suspended, so he doesn’t see when the side of the prophet’s bandages dips to his cheekbone, revealing glowing teal eyes who burned into your soul. 

“But it’s no longer you.” 

And then the prophet kicked Odysseus off the ledge.
